Juan ‘Igor’ González se convirtió en la noche del sábado en el segundo dirigente en la historia del Béisbol Superior Doble A, en lograr títulos consecutivos con equipos distintos, con la victoria de los Toritos de Cayey.

“Nos merecíamos este triunfo. Estoy agradecido y privilegiado. Se escribe una página más en la historia”, expresó el dos veces Jugador Más Valioso de la Liga Americana en las Mayores.

González, quien ganó con los Grises de Humacao en 2021, igualó la gesta de su compueblano vegabajeño Víctor ‘Vitín’ Meléndez, campeón de las temporadas 1971-1972 (Manatí) y 1973 (Vega Baja).

Cayey venció en el séptimo partido 7-2 a los Peces Voladores de Salinas, ante más de 5 mil fanáticos en el estadio Pedro Montañez de Cayey.

Por tercer año consecutivo, el campeón del torneo se decidió en un séptimo juego. Es el segundo título en los últimos cuatro años para Cayey, que tiene cuatro cetros en total, conquistados en las temporadas 2022, 2018, 1986 y 1945.

Cayey contó con una efectiva combinación de los hermanos José Carlos y Juan Carlos Burgos, ambos lanzadores zurdos. El primero fue el ganador, al tirar durante 7.1 entradas con cinco ponches, seis hits permitidos y una carrera. Mientras, Juan Carlos cubrió el resto del camino.

Los Toritos atacaron desde la primera entrada al derecho Yadiel Rolón con par de anotaciones, mediante sencillo de Nelson Molina y ‘passed ball’ que aprovechó Richard González para llegar al plato.

Rolón permitió las primeras cuatro anotaciones de Cayey en 2.2 entradas para cargar con la derrota. Le pegaron seis incogibles y ponchó a dos.

En el tercer episodio, un triple de Michael Arroyo añadió dos vueltas después de dos outs y en el sexto acto, los Toritos aumentaron su ventaja con ramillete de tres carreras, gracias a sencillos de Christian Torres y Jan Arroyo.

Salinas hizo su primera vuelta en la octava entrada y fabricó otra en la novena.

El primer bate  de los Toritos, Kelvin Pérez, fue escogido el Jugador Más Valioso de la serie. Fue el campeón bate del baile de coronación con promedio de .400, con 12 hits. Anotó siete carreras y empujó cuatro. Además, recibió dos bases por bolas.

Al finalizar el encuentro, el vicepresidente de la Federación de Béisbol de Puerto Rico, ingeniero Carlos Príncipe Díaz, entregó el trofeo de campeón al apoderado Alberto Rivera.  Le acompañó el director ejecutivo, Efraín Williams González.

The Weeknd interrumpió abruptamente su concierto en el SoFi Stadium de Inglewood, con las entradas agotadas, el sábado por la noche, a tan solo tres canciones del set, diciendo a los fans que tenía que cancelar el espectáculo después de perder la voz en medio de “Can’t Feel My Face”.

En medio de la canción, The Weeknd abandonó el escenario. La canción terminó y comenzó otra antes de que se encendieran las luces. El cantante volvió a salir al escenario, dijo que había perdido la voz y se disculpó por tener que cancelar.

“Voy a asegurarme de que todo el mundo esté bien, os devolveré vuestro dinero”, dijo al atónito público. “Pero haré un show muy pronto para ustedes”.

The Weeknd añadió que quería disculparse personalmente, en lugar de hacerlo por Twitter o Instagram. “No puedo daros lo que quiero daros”, dijo.

Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a flash flood warning for Western sections of Barbados.

This alert is from 8am and will be UPDATED/TERMINATED at 12pm or sooner if conditions warrant.

A flash-flood warning is issued when rapid flooding due to heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) is occurring or is imminent in the warning area.

Maximum Rainfall Accumulations of 50.0 to 100.0 mm in heavy showers are expected this morning.

Residents and visitors should note that the following impacts are imminent during this forecast period :

Strong runoff from higher elevations

Soil erosion likely on bared or scarred land surfaces

Debris such as small rocks, mud and tree foliage could end up on roads and property

Traffic delays are likely

Flooding at the foot of hillsides and coastal roads is possible.

Hearing about a tropical storm or hurricane forecast is one thing; living through it, however, is an entirely different matter. As a result, each person is encouraged to learn more about hurricanes and their impacts, preferably before they happen so that they can make adequate preparations. The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, which outlines various categories of hurricanes, is helpful in this regard.

According to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, hurricane intensities are categorised from 1 to 5, mostly based on maximum sustained winds at any time. For example, a category 1 hurricane like Hurricane Danielle became a hurricane once Danielle exceeded 73 mph, as explained in the below video.

Notwithstanding the above, general illustration of damage, the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is not intended to predict absolutely the impacts of maximum sustained winds across different categories.

In fact, the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale has limitations. For example, the actual damage Cayman may experience could be influenced by many factors. Some of these are:

the age of relevant structuresbuilding codes applicable to such structures (and whether or not they are enforced)how slowly the system is moving or sits over you (like Hurricane Ivan, which pounded the Cayman Islands for over 24 hours in September 2004)flooding, storm surge and other factors

How to prepare

Given the social, economic, and environmental devastation caused by Hurricane Ivan in September 2004 (September is the historical peak of the hurricane season) and the potential for this to happen again, it is important for communities and businesses to have proper disaster and business continuity plans in place, far in advance of a threat.

In addition, it is critical for communities to establish community emergency response teams (CERT), who are members of each community trained by Hazard Management Cayman Islands (HCMI). (If you are not familiar with the CERT programme, you can learn more on HCMI’s website at https://www.caymanprepared.gov.ky/cert. )

Ideally, you should also get to know the members of the CERT team for your area prior to a disaster as the team will assess the resources in your community before a hurricane and assist HCMI and other emergency responders, post-disaster. To obtain this information, you may contact HCMI at 945-4624 or email them at hmci@gov.ky.

With this knowledge in hand, residents should not, however, get too relaxed or become complacent thinking that all angles are covered. Instead, residents should remain vigilant upon the announcement of a hurricane or tropical storm, stay prepared and test hurricane preparedness plans from time to time, even when there is no threat.
