Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 01, 2022 (RSCNPF): Resident Pathologist, Dr. Adrian Nuñez performed an autopsy on the body of 23-year-old Shakeel Marsham of Godwin Ghaut on Wednesday, August 31, 2022.
Dr. Nuñez concluded that death was due to hypovolemic shock and multiple traumatic injuries as a result of a motor vehicular accident.

A homemade handgun along with several rounds of ammunition were seized by the Hanover police on the Sandy Bay main road in the parish on Thursday, September 1.
A man was taken into custody in connection with the seizure.
Reports are that about 12:30 pm, a man visited the local police station to make a report about a shooting incident.
While at the station, the suspect was seen riding along the roadway, and was pointed out to the police.
He was accosted and subsequently searched, and the homemade firearm and 10 rounds of ammunition were reportedly taken from him.
His identity is being withheld pending further investigations by the police.

The Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) says it will continue to exchange ?20 and ?50 paper banknotes even as its counterpart in England withdraws the legal tender status of those bills on September 30.
The BOJ said it would continue to follow the usual verification of the authenticity of the notes and customer due diligence, as required by the Bank’s Anti-Money Laundering (AML) policy and operating procedures.
It accepts all foreign currencies for which it publishes a counter rate. A listing of these is available on the BOJ website.
Therefore, until otherwise advised, Jamaica’s central bank will continue to accept these ?20 and ?50 paper banknotes for exchange at its banking counters.

Two drivers, an elderly woman and a 24-year-old man, escaped death while trying to drive through floods on the San Fernando ByPass Road near the roundabout near South Park on Friday afternoon.
The man, Timothy Mohammed from Siparia, managed to get out of his car before it was washed into a river.

But Myrtle Benjamin, who is in her 70s, was trapped in her minivan in rising water. The van had stalled, and she was unable to get out.
Both drivers were heading towards Marabella.
Mon Repos fire officers toted Benjamin out of her van and carried her through the floodwater.
“I kept praying for God to send angels, and he did,” she said, referring to the fire officers.
She also praised Mohammed and an eyewitness, Allon Moonah, for offering her words of encouragement during the ordeal.
“They kept telling me to stay calm.”

The road was impassable for over an hour before the water subsided and traffic flowed freely.
Insp Phillip and other police from the Southern Division visited the scene.

Re: Update on fire at St. George’s High
The Guyana Fire Service has completed its investigation into the fire which destroyed the St. George’s High School on July 20, 2022.
Based on our findings the fire was electrical in nature and stemmed from an inoperable duplex receptacle located in the Social Studies Department on the North Eastern wall of the building.
Though inoperable, electricity was going to the duplex receptacle and the subsequent overheating of the insulation caused the plastic coating on the wire to melt, resulting in arcing and sparking which ignited nearby combustibles and spread to the entire building.
The Guyana Fire Service is urging citizens to ensure electrical appliances, outlets and wiring are of the correct standard as advised by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS). These items should be examined on a regular basis to ensure they are in proper working order.
Citizens are also advised to equip their homes and businesses with fire extinguishers and smoke detectors for the early detection and extinction of fires.

Ante el hallazgo este viernes, de un cuerpo en estado de descomposición en un edificio del Departamento de la Familia en Bayamón, las uniones locales 3234 y 3227 de Servidores Públicos Unidos de Puerto Rico, que representan sindicalmente a este personal solicitaron a la secretaria de dicha agencia Carmen Ana González Magaz a que se asegure de que en el edificio se realice una limpieza forense que incluya los conductos de aire.
“En este tipo de situación debemos asegurarnos de que la salud de nuestros miembros, así como de los que visitan estas oficinas, no se vean afectadas. Por eso le reclamamos al patrono que antes de que se reanuden las labores el martes, 6 de septiembre se nos garantice que se realizará una limpieza de desechos biológicos que incluya desinfección y cambios de filtros en los conductos de aire“, expresó Solimar Hernández, presidenta de local sindical en declaraciones escritas.
Por su parte la presidenta de SIPAA, Local 3227 SPUPR-AFSCME, Sonia Delgado recalcó la importancia de que en todas las dependencias del Departamento de la Familia deben asegurarse de que diariamente las facilidades sean limpiadas, así como que la seguridad del lugar verifique todos los espacios, incluidos los baños.
“En este caso la limpieza que se hace en el lugar es privada al igual que la seguridad. El DFAM debe garantizarnos que las facilidades están limpias y seguras”, dijo.
Señalaron que inclusive los protocolos de COVID están vigentes por lo que no hay razón para que la limpieza no sea diaria y que nadie se percatara de un cuerpo hasta que estuviese en estado de descomposición.

El presidente de la Cámara de Representantes, Rafael Hernández Montañez, y el presidente de la Comisión de Asuntos Laborales, Domingo Torres García, anunciaron el viernes, que retarán en el Tribunal Federal la decisión de la Junta de Control Fiscal (JCF) de anular la Reforma Laboral (Ley 41-2022), con el fin de salvaguardar los derechos de la clase trabajadora del país.
“La JCF, en un ejercicio arbitrario, pretende invalidar una legislación que fue producto de un trabajo en consenso con todos los partidos en la Asamblea Legislativa por los pasados 18 meses, cuando no tiene la autoridad en ley para hacerlo, y se obstina en un asunto filosófico en el cual no tiene la razón”, afirmó Hernández Montañez en declaraciones escritas.
Los beneficios restituidos con la Ley 41-2022 incluyen el acceso a un periodo probatorio reducido y razonable, el diseño de una estructura más digna para acumular la licencia de vacaciones y enfermedad, el cálculo de un bono de navidad más accesible y razonable, y la potestad para revertir la carga probatoria impuesta a la clase trabajadora para reclamar un remedio por un despido injustificado, entre otros.
“El proceso de vistas públicas fue amplio, comprensivo y balanceado, contando con la participación de representantes de todos los sectores de Puerto Rico. Así, esta medida logró adelantar un fin público del más alto interés, sin comprometer el desarrollo económico del país”, indicó Torres García, representante del distrito 25.
Asimismo, Hernández Montañez sostuvo que la JCF “radicó una demanda basada en supuestos y generalidades, para imponer su visión filosófica de gobierno, sin ningún estudio formal, ni data empírica que la sustente.
“Nada nos detendrá, y presentaremos una solicitud de intervención ante el Tribunal Federal para defender a la clase trabajadora y demostrar que la entrada en vigor de esta Ley de ninguna forma atenta contra el desarrollo económico de la isla. La Cámara no escatimará en su compromiso de defender a los trabajadores y derrotaremos, una vez más, este nuevo intento de arrebatarle los derechos a nuestra clase obrera con argumentos filosóficos huecos y vacíos”, concluyó Hernández Montañez.

En horas de la noche de ayer, se reportó la muerte de una mujer en la carretera #2 en la parte posterior de un concesionario de autos en Vega Alta.
De acuerdo a la información preliminar, luego de que se recibiera una llamada a través del Sistema de Emergencias 911, alertando sobre una situación sospechosa, al llegar los agentes al lugar, localizaron dentro de un vehículo Toyota Corolla color azul del año 1978, el cuerpo de una mujer que aún no ha sido identificada (Jane Doe).
Paramédicos de la Oficina Municipal del Manejo de Emergencias de Vega Alta indicaron la ausencia de signos vitales.
El agente García Batista y la fiscal Linda Sepúlveda, se hicieron cargo de la investigación, que aún continúa. No se descarta una posible sobredosis.

“It’s not about where you’re from, it’s where you’re going”, that’s the theme of the Youth Entrepreneurship Session, which will be hosted by Fayval Williams, Minister of Education and Youth and Member of Parliament for St Andrew Eastern.
The event will be held on Sunday, September 4, at 5 PM at the Escarpment Road Park in Hermitage, St Andrew.
The session aims to help young adults tap into their ability and readiness to develop, organise and run a business and embrace the myriad of financial and entrepreneurship opportunities available locally.
Williams commented: “As the world economy continues to evolve and move away from traditions, we must engage our youth in the financial opportunities that await them. Financial planning, investing, and entrepreneurship are all necessary prospects that young people must be exposed to, and so we are excited to partner with some of Jamaica’s youngest and brightest entrepreneurs who came from surrounding communities within this constituency.”
She added: “We hope to inspire our youth and have them walk away from the session overflowing with knowledge and bright ideas.”
Local entreprenuers Ricardo Allen from One on One Educational Services, Tyrone Wilson from iCreate Institute, Keisha Bailey from Profit Jumpstarter and Larren Peart from Bluedot Insights will speak at the event.
During the session, Williams will be gifting 15 scholarships to individuals. These scholarships include five Money Blueprint Courses, five scholarships from One-on-One Educational Services, and five iCreate courses.
Additionally, the First Heritage Cooperative Credit Union will host a discussion on investment opportunities for youth and tips on starting a business plan/account.

The first set of vaccines to treat the Monkeypox disease is expected to arrive this month, says Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Christopher Tufton.
“We have a priority group that will be targeted, similarly to what we [did] with the COVID-19 [vaccine distribution], and once they arrive, we will offer it to that group,” the minister said.
This comes as the island has recorded several cases of the disease, just before the beginning of the 2022/23 school year.
Speaking at the Open House & Exhibition ceremony for the rehabilitation of public health facilities in St. Catherine, held at the Church of the Open Bible in Twickenham Park on Wednesday, August 31, Tufton called on parents to be vigilant.
“If there is any problem at all, go to your parish health office or report to your school nurse,” he added.
Tufton advised that the same health and safety protocols that were in place to manage the spread of the COVID-19 virus within schools will also be maintained throughout the new school year.
These include abiding by social-distancing protocols, wearing masks, frequent handwashing and designated areas for sanitisation on school grounds, among others.
“The Ministry and the Ministry of Education and Youth work closely together. There are briefing sessions; we work with the school nurses [and] guidance counsellors; the schools are aware of what to look for and the recommendations to health centres, doctors [and] hospitals,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Senior Medical Officer for the Spanish Town Hospital and Consultant Paediatrician, Jacqueline Wright James, said there is no need for panic, as the “[monkeypox case] numbers aren’t significantly high in Jamaica”.
“And more so for children, they are less infected than the adults. We have seen some paediatric cases worldwide and, therefore, it is not impossible for a child to contract monkeypox,” she pointed out.
“We have come through the COVID-19 pandemic for the last two and a half years and those measures that we enforced to reduce the spread are really the same measures that we will enforce for monkeypox,” Dr. Wright James added.
