Nouvelle journ?e de manifestation ? Jacmel

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Le Nouvelliste

Girlfriend killed as brothers targeted by gunmen

Michelle Alexander, mother of Jevon and Brandon Joseph speaks to Newsday at her home in La Canoa, Santa Cruz on Wednesday. – Sureash Cholai

THE mother of two men targeted by gunmen grieved at her La Canoa Road, lower Santa Cruz home for a woman who was shot and killed in the crossfire after gunmen stormed her son’s home on Wednesday morning.

Police said Ashley Morris, 28, was at the home of her boyfriend, Brandon Joseph, at around 7 am when she heard noises outside and went to check.

Gunmen shot her multiple times before going to look for Joseph.

Joseph managed to escape with one gunshot wound to his right leg.

Morris was pronounced dead on the scene and Joseph was taken to the hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

On Tuesday, Joseph’s brother Jevon, a 26-year-old gardener was killed by gunmen as he walked near Cakes Land, La Canoa Road, around 2.15 pm. He was shot several times.

A DMO pronounced him dead on the scene and his body was taken to the Forensic Sciences Centre for an autopsy. Investigations are ongoing.

When Newsday visited the area the men’s mother Michelle Alexander sat on a concrete step of her porch, holding her head as she was being consoled by two other relatives.

She could not think of a reason why anyone would target her sons.

“When they killed the first one I was in a mess. I haven’t slept yet so I was up when I hear the gunshot this morning. The first person that came to my mind was my other son and right away my belly locked and burned.

“But they could have let that girl go. If they had something with my sons they could trash it out with them, but that girl was innocent. I want to know why they would kill a woman like this. Killing the girl was not called for.”

Morris had been in a relationship with Joseph for three months and recently moved in with him.

“I have to ask the people who do this: ‘Why? Why kill the innocent girl?’ She got caught up in the crossfire but that should not happen. Is it that you didn’t want any witnesses? I watch this woman go in front of my eyes. I am a woman. All I will say to the people that do this is: how you make your bed is how you will lay down.”

She has left the murder of her first son in God’s hands.

“This is the life we live in. Life will go on but I would say this: the crime situation is a mess. People will get tired of the bloodshed and start to riot. This is not under control.

Another relative of the men, who did not want to be named, believes he will be the next target but has decided not to go into hiding.

“When his (Joseph’s) brother got killed I spoke to him and his girlfriend and we planned to have a lime to cheer up his mother for Independence Day.

The man, who lives a stone’s throw away from the Josephs, said, on his way to the house, he heard gunshots and ran back home.

“They shoot them up for a whole half-an-hour. When it finished, I meet him (Brandon) come down on the track and I take him. And the police and ambulance came and rushed him to the hospital.

“I don’t understand why someone would do this, but all three of us move together and I feel I’m next and I don’t know why.

The men are originally from Port of Spain but moved to Santa Cruz to move away from criminal elements and influence.

The relative said “The brother that got killed was warned not to go up by Cakes Land because of the reputation of the area but he still went to check a friend. As soon as he left, got killed on the road.

The relative has no faith the police can arrest the perpetrators.

“They can’t protect me. I asked them if they plan to do more patrols, because I feeling uneasy now, and they told me they would try their best. They told my family not to sleep up here tonight but I’m not going anywhere because I still have to stick around because my aunt (Michelle) is still there.”

The father of one said his mother would take care of his daughter if he was targeted next.

“It has nothing I could do but protect myself, stay off the road and keep my eyes open.”

MUNICH, Germany (AP) — Marquee signing Sadio Man? maintained his impressive scoring form as Bayern Munich eased to a 5-0 win at third-tier Viktoria Cologne in the German Cup on Wednesday.

Man? joined Bayern in a high-profile offseason move from Champions League runner-up Liverpool and the Senegal forward made it five goals in six games when he netted to make it 3-0 early in the second half.

Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch grabbed his first career goal for Bayern to put the record 20-time cup winner ahead in the 35th minute. He then set up 17-year-old forward Mathys Tel — another new signing — in first-half injury time.

Bayern’s next goal came from 19-year-old forward Jamal Musiala — his fifth in as many games — before silky midfielder Leon Goretzka wrapped it up late on after Man? set him up.

On Tuesday, former Chelsea forward Timo Werner scored a first-half hat trick as Leipzig started their cup defense with an 8-0 rout of amateur team Teutonia Ottensen.

Eyewitness: Hijinks…in US

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana

Ever since the 13 colonies on the American eastern seaboard decided to poke the British Monarch – at that time the “mad” George III – in the eye and declare themselves independent, they set themselves up as a beacon of freedom against tyrannical rule. But even though the British had as many colonies in the West Indies, THEY looked at the move with horror, since the tiny minority White ruling planters here needed the Crown to protect them from the wrath of the Africans they’d enslaved and were working to death. It would take more than 180 years for those slaves’ descendants – who’d been freed in the meantime – to demand the same freedom those “Americans” had enjoyed since 1776!!And we looked at the US as the “City on the Hill” we hoped to become. Sadly, we were derided as “Third World”, compared to that “First World” city, and one recent President – Trump – even referred to us as “shithole countries”!! That was undoubtedly their majority opinion, but it took Trump – whose mouth, as we say in the local vernacular, “doesn’t have licence” – to say it out aloud!! But if we’re honest, most of us hold that same view of our countries. We declare it “performatively” when we stand in the sun for hours to get that American visa. Or make our way to the Bahamas or the Rio Grande in Mexico to be smuggled over to the “City on the Hill”!!

But the selfsame President Trump has demonstrated that “what goes around comes around”, and “nothing lasts forever” – especially when it comes to “great powers” and their place in the world. Wasn’t Egypt a top dog once?? Or Greece? Or Rome?? Or even Britain, on “whose empire the sun never set”?? There is, history has shown, the ephemeral nature of political power!! The Brits’ own Shelley had written ironically about a massive fallen and broken statue in the sand, “And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!”

But there’s another saying to the effect that “those whom the gods would destroy they first make mad”. It would seem that as the US begins its inevitable decline into “Third Worldism”, the indignity is personified in its upper echelons as madness. And so, today, we see the house of that mighty ruler of the US being raided to recover “top secret” documents that he took with him after he was voted out of office. Why would he take these documents?? Some say it was to sell to the Russians?? Others to protect his previous transgressions against the “deep state”?

Ah…how the mighty has fallen!! And this is said with NO schadenfreude!!

…in Guyana

Far be it for your Eyewitness to claim that there aren’t many paragons of virtue in our local politics!! Any politics?? Anywhere?? But one development in our dear mudland politics (mud??) made him smile in admiration: the claim by the PNC that the PPP rigged the last elections!! Now, that takes some brass balls, and that must be acknowledged!! Here’s a political party – the PNC – that’s studied in post-graduate schools when the subject is “elections rigging” – and the PPP beat them at their own game??!! While they were out of Government??

If it took the hijinks of two thieves to make God laugh, then this claim should trigger some gales of laughter from beyond the clouds!! So, in 2011, with the PPP holding the reins of office, they didn’t rig to prevent the Opposition controlling the National Assembly? And even forewarned, also didn’t rig to prevent being thrown out in 2015!?! Yet pulled it off by remote control in 2020??With all these crises, we do need a good laugh!!

…in Pakistan

It’s known politicians will sink to any depth to get back into power. But to arrange to have one-third of their country to be under water??You don’t know Imran’s Pakistan ally China is a “rainmaker”??

A manhunt is under way for hoodlums who robbed a bar and allegedly murdered an elderly watchman, whose body was found with its hands and feet bound in Christiana, Manchester on Wednesday.

The deceased is 61-year-old Anthony Williams of Christiana.

The police are theorising that Williams was killed during the robbery which is suspected to have been committed in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

It was reported that a break-in was noticed at the establishment and an alarmed was raised.

The elderly man was later found lying lifeless on the floor with his hands and feet bound, as well as what appeared to be a piece of electrical cord wrapped around the neck.

A video of the gruesome discovery has been making the rounds on several social media platforms.

Further checks of the bar revealed that a quantity of liquor and an undetermined sum of cash were taken.

The scene was processed and Williams’ body was subsequently taken to the morgue.

A post-mortem examination is to be conducted at a later date.
