MANCHESTER, England (AP) — England quickly cleaned up South Africa’s tail with the new ball to confirm a resounding innings win in the second test on Saturday and send the series to a decider.
England won by an innings and 85 runs inside three days as James Anderson and Ollie Robinson combined to take the last five South African wickets in just 5.1 overs of the new ball.
South Africa were bowled out for 179 in their second innings at Old Trafford, still well short of making England bat again.
The new England were back on track after an innings defeat in the series opener at Lord’s interrupted their winning start under new test captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.
“Amazing to come back from last week’s disappointment at Lord’s,” Stokes said. “Gives us a lot of confidence back.”
Robinson finished with four for 43 in the second innings in his comeback test and Anderson had three for 30 and six wickets in the match at his home ground. Anderson also went to 100 test wickets against South Africa, another milestone in the remarkable career of the evergreen 40-year-old fast bowler.
He set the tone at the start of the day by knocking South Africa captain Dean Elgar’s off stump out of the ground. England’s first breakthrough came in the first 15 minutes.
England were on course to make the series 1-1 ever since they rolled the visitors out for 151 in their first innings on Thursday and then posted a formidable 415 for nine declared on Friday, with centuries by Stokes (103) and wicketkeeper Ben Foakes (113 not out).
Elgar said he had “no regrets” about choosing to bat first, a decision viewed as an error of judgment as England’s seam bowlers tore through the visiting lineup in helpful bowling conditions in Manchester.
South Africa started day three on 23 without loss and although Keegan Petersen (42) and Rassie van der Dussen (41) delayed England’s victory with an 87-run stand for the fourth wicket, that was the only resistance and the result was never really in doubt.
They kept England wicketless in the second session, with Van der Dussen batting with a broken finger that will see him miss the final test.
Stokes made another crucial intervention in the match when he removed Van der Dussen and Petersen in consecutive overs of a gutsy spell with the old ball after tea, opening the way for Anderson and Robinson to finish things off.
Anderson’s second delivery with the new ball nipped back off the seam to smash into Simon Harmer’s stumps to leave South Africa 172 for six and England raced to victory from there.
England were clinical at the end as the Proteas went from 141 for three to 179 all out, with those last five wickets falling for just seven runs.
The series decider is at the Oval in London starting on Sept. 8.
Final scores in the match are: South Africa 151 & 179, England 415-9 declared.

LONDON (AP) — Arsenal defender Gabriel made up for a defensive howler by scoring a late winner to secure a 2-1 victory over Fulham that maintained the Gunners’ perfect start to the English Premier League on Saturday.
Having gifted Fulham the lead in the second half, Gabriel was on hand to score from close range after a corner in the 86th minute to complete the comeback for Arsenal.
Fulham led against the run of play in the 56th when Gabriel dawdled on the ball in his own area. Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic robbed the Brazilian of possession and beat goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale with a low finish inside the far post.
Gabriel’s winning goal was a simple tap-in into an empty net after Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno failed to punch away the corner, the first mistake from the German after he made a handful of good saves to keep his former teammates at bay. It was Leno’s first return to Emirates Stadium since his offseason move across London.
Until then, he had been beaten only by a shot from Martin Odegaard that took a big deflection off a Fulham defender in the 64th.
Ramsdale, who beat out Leno for the starting job last season, then maintained Arsenal’s lead in the final minutes with a good save at the other end to keep substitute Nathaniel Chalobah.
Arsenal top the standings with 12 points from four games, two ahead of Manchester City and Brighton.
Manager Mikel Arteta was forced into a couple of changes as Thomas Party and Oleksandr Zinchenko were out injured, and Arsenal lacked some of their fluidity in midfield without the duo.
Arsenal still dominated possession but struggled to create quality chances.
Leno’s best save came in the first half, when Bukayo Saka raced clear on goal but saw his shot parried by the onrushing goalkeeper.

Schools across Antigua and Barbuda, while set to resume in less than two weeks time, will open for teachers on Monday, August 29.
Students, on the other hand, return for the start of the 2022-2023 academic year on September 5.
Teachers have undergone workshops over summer break and their early return is in preparation for the new school year, official reports say.
The shortage of teachers has been a constant problem over the years, with students often not having an instructor for a particular subject, sometimes for an entire term. However, the Government is promising that every step is being taken to ensure that each school has an adequate number of teachers this year.
Work is also being done to ensure the school plant is ready to receive the inflow of students; this includes having an adequate number of desks and chairs; cleaning the classrooms; and ridding the compounds of overgrown grass and shrubbery.
Minister of Health Sir Molwyn Joseph, meanwhile, says that COVID-19 has been greatly reduced in its ability to spread; however, he says the wearing of masks remains optional in classrooms — but is very much encouraged.
Meanwhile, the Youth Education and Empowerment Programme (YEEP) has reportedly registered approximately 500 students ahead of its new academic year.
Administrators of the programme say that classes will likely be split between two venues, both of which are yet to be confirmed, but will be done shortly.
It was only last week that an administrator took to social media to claim that his efforts to find a home for the programme were not being supported, despite a Cabinet decision that the Ministries of Works and Social Transformation should have advanced.
YEEP students, reportedly, are primarily made up of working and unemployed adults who are now seeking to acquire CXC and CAPE subjects, and it is said to be involved in the preparation of students for university.

Harold Lovell, Political Leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), is asking about the status of shares in the West Indies Oil Company Ltd. (WIOC) owned by Chinese-Canadian investor Xiao Jianhua.
Jianhua was fined and confined for 13 years in China, last Friday, August 19, after pleading guilty to bribery and other crimes that Chinese authorities said had “seriously jeopardized” the country’s financial security.
The Chinese billionaire has been said to control nearly 25% of WIOC’s shares and holds Antigua and Barbuda citizenship.
Since 2017 questions have been raised about his holdings in the company.
Lately, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said in Parliament that the Chinese investor’s interests in the company were being managed here in Antigua, but he did not elaborate.
With Jianhua’s conviction, Lovell is asking what has become of his shares and whether the Chinese Government will seize them, since it is going after his other assets globally.
The UPP Political Leader says there are still many unanswered questions related to this Chinese investor and his association with WIOC.
Meanwhile, to the surprise of residents on Wednedsay night, Browne stated, on an Observer Radio live feed, that Jianhua has no shares in WIOC. But, again, he did not elaborate.
There is speculation that Government Ministers are actually shareholders in Jianhua’s holdings in Antigua and Barbuda.

Tabor says the two minimum wage increases granted under the Baldwin Spencer Administration were a demonstration that the UPP is, indeed, a “People First” political institution.
Once the Party is returned to office at the next polls, he assures affected workers that they will see a wage increase that falls in line with the high inflation rate.
As inflation increases, many manufacturers are slyly cutting down on the volume of their products, while retaining the size of the packaging. In essence, consumers are paying more money for less content, resulting in what is now termed “shrink-flation.”
Meanwhile, Tabor says that even the conditions under which many persons are forced to work are deplorable, and a UPP
Administration will urgently address this.
Meanwhile, Senator Tabor notes the relocation of several government departments, including the Central Board of Health, the St. John’s and All Saints Magistrates Courts, and a number of police stations – all due to mouldy premises, leaks and other structural issues.
The Government should have made these a priority, he says, and he is calling for upgrades to these departments, as well as to the hospital and community clinics.

As residents in St Mary continue to grieve following the incident where two bright and energetic children from their parish were washed away, more information is emerging on how one of the victims, in her last moments, tried to rescue the other after seeing the relative in a difficult situation.
The attempt would end tragically with both children being washed. The bodies of both girls Kiwanna Ricketts, 10, and Hallekaye Smikle, 14 have since been recovered, and the development has since triggered widespread grief in the parish.
It was initially reported that the girls, another child, and Ricketts’ mother were at the river on Thursday afternoon washing clothes.
Reports had suggested at the time that the adult left the area to hang out clothes when a heavy downpour of rain occurred and the girls were washed away.
But Deputy Superintendent (DSP) Romeo Henry, who is assigned to the St Mary Police Division and was part of the search team over the weekend sought to clarify aspects of the initial reports with reporters.
The police said all four females were on their way home in the rain when upon reaching a section of the roadway in Jobs Hill, 10-year-old Ricketts slipped and fell into the river.
Fourteen-year-old Hallekaye, on seeing what occurred, tried to save Ricketts, but she also lost her balance and also fell into the river. The children were then swept away by the waters.
Following the incident, a massive search was launched and the body of Ricketts was found on Friday. The body of Hallekaye was found on Saturday.
