Cadelouse, la flamme de Klass

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Le Nouvelliste

Hinds: Crime would not be eradicated overnight

As of August 22, TT recorded 7,855 cases of serious crimes including 378 murders and 456 shootings and woundings.

National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds made the statement on Tuesday night at a People’s National Movement national public meeting in Belmont. He said TT had several challenges with crime, but the major ones were border security, guns, and gangs.

He said of the 378 murders this year 26 arose out of altercations, five from property disputes, seven cases of domestic violence, 62 were drug related, 141 involved gangs, 43 were revenge-related, one police/prison officer killed in the line of duty, one woman during a rape, 38 during robberies, and 34 were unclassified.

There were 25 multiple murders including 21 double murders, three triple murders, and a quadruple murder. And out of those 25 multiple murders there were 76 offences – 55 murders, and 21 shootings and woundings.

There were also 420 weapons seized including 76 revolvers, 244 pistols, 20 shotguns, 54 assault rifles, five sub-machine guns, and 20 homemade shotguns.

“I understand the trauma TT is going through, but I want to say to you frankly it is serious business. It wasn’t created overnight and it would not be eradicated overnight. We have to be vigilant. We have to fight, and fight we (the PNM) will (in Parliament).”

Hinds said even though the government increased the number of judges and magistrates in the court system, matters could be filed in the magistrates’ court electronically, and virtual court centres, the justice system works too slowly.

He added it was disheartening when the police did their jobs to catch criminals and the guilty people were given small fines or minimal sentences.

“There’s no way the Executive or the Parliament could tell the Judiciary what to do and how to sentence someone. But I just simply want to record that gun carrying is murderous and bloody, and we would like to see the provisions of the law implemented optimally sometimes to send clear messages, especially since we are not getting the support of the Opposition in the Parliament, on behalf of you, to put in place the laws we want to.”

In an effort to both prevent and suppress crime, Hinds highlighted several government initiatives including a facility in the Youth Transformation and Rehabilitation Centre for females with a learning centre, the Homestead programme providing agricultural training and eventually land, and numerous other programmes in sports, religion, academics and skills for children and adults.

Hinds said the government outfitted the police Coastal and Riverine Patrol Unit, procured new offshore patrol vessels, drones, a radar system, and the police was undertaking a major gun-retrieval exercise.

He said the country would soon have radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology which could identify number plates associated with vehicle owners and identify people inside of vehicles.

There were also 1,796 operating cameras on the nation’s roads, 2,500 modern updated cameras were being installed, and the government was in negotiations for a further 2,500 cameras.

More guns account for increase in Port of Spain gun violence

Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Wendell Williams, addresses the media at the Police Administration Building, Port of Spain, on Thursday. – Angelo Marcelle

AS murders in the Port of Spain and East Port of Spain increase, acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Wendell Williams said the proliferation of guns is responsible.

At the police service’s weekly media briefing on Thursday, Williams said more guns resulted in more killings.

Williams who is in charge of intelligence and investigations said, based on his opinion, the proliferation of firearms, “for sure,” is a main cause.

“Undoubtedly we have more guns and we have been seizing guns all the time. A Venezuelan national was arrested yesterday with a firearm and ammunition, that’s indicative of some of the challenges that we have to deal with, this flow or relationship.

“The fact of the matter is that we have these issues to deal with and that certainly contributed to our challenge.”

Williams’ connection of guns coming from Venezuela differs from acting Police Commissioner Mc Donald Jacob, who on August 15 said intelligence suggests that guns are coming through the legal ports of entry.

He said there are people in the US who were arrested for sending guns to Trinidad and Tobago as he dismissed the notion that the bulk of illegal guns were coming from Venezuela.

Williams added that apart from guns there is the issue of gangs where members feel liberated to do what they want.

“From time to time we do have the increase in gang violence and we take steps as we are doing now to bring that under control.”

At least six men were murdered this month in Port of Spain with the most recent taking place while the victim was at work. The murder of Delano Pierre on Tuesday, police said, was linked to ongoing gang war between Rasta City and Six gangs.

Pierre, who was killed while leaving the Port of Spain City Corporation’s divisional headquarters at the corner of Quarry and Observatory Streets, was not involved in criminal activity and killed because he lived in Gonzales.

A day earlier, Rasta City gang member Avery Weekes was shot near to where Pierre was murdered. Weekes died at the Port of Spain General Hospital.

On Wednesday, a day after Pierre’s murder, Jervon Roberts died at hospital after he was shot at Argyle Street, Gloster Lodge, Gonzales.

Three other men, including two PH taxi drivers who were killed in Gonzales and Belmont days apart were also victims of the war. The murdered taxi drivers were Rassan Richardson – who police said was killed because he was seen transporting men from Rasta City – and Ricardo Simon.

On August 9, Richardson was driving along Gloster Lodge Road, Gonzales, when he was shot. He died at the scene. Seven days earlier Simon was killed while driving along Hermitage Road, Belmont. He lived at Upper Wharton Street, Laventille.

Police said Celestine Richards, who was their main suspect in the murder of Richardson was killed by police on August 18. On August 15, Micah Cipriani, a friend of Richards, who police said was a member of the Six Gang, was killed

Cipriani who lived at Roslyn Street, Belmont, was shot while walking along Margaret’s Lane in a driveby and died at the Port of Spain General Hospital.

Police said the killings between Rasta City and Six escalated when Six Gang affiliate Joel Williams was killed after he was shot in the head on South Quay on July 14.

Commenting on that killing, Williams said: “From the day I saw that killing on the South Quay area, I had a little extra concern. The perpetrator acted somewhat independently. The manner of doing it in the city, certainly speaks volumes.”

Williams said, based on his faith and 39 years in the police service, he felt safe in the capital.

AT the launch of the Patri Artism: A National Treasure art collection to commemorate Trinidad and Tobago’s 60th Independence, hosted by the Office of the Prime Minister in collaboration with the Central Bank museum, the Prime Minister encouraged students to take advantage of the opportunity to witness an important piece of TT’s history.

Following a brief viewing of the 25 pieces on display On Wednesday afternoon, just before ending his feature address to a small crowd at the White Hall, Maraval Road, Port of Spain, Dr Rowley said it is also important for children to be a part of the rare occasion.

“The representation you would see – the vision of the artiste, the quality of the work hidden behind the doors of the Central Bank and FCB – it’s a pity the average person on the average day does not have the opportunity to see and interact with the power of these works.

“I would like to say to the teachers around the country even if your charged are at home, some of your still have the contact to bring children here, especially your art students.

“I would love to know that as many children as possible from across this land, can walk through these halls, walk through these doors and up these steps into this building and claim this heritage that is theirs.”

He added, “On this occasion where we are 60 years old as a nation these are treasures that are the best representation of our nation of six decades of the nation we were promised in 1962. So we would like to have them represented in the various forms, books and virtual displays so our citizens abroad could enjoy these without being here.

The exhibition is a combination of mixed media, watercolour and acrylic and oil on canvas and board from Peter Minshall, Boscoe Holder, Leo Glasgow, to name a few, collected and put together by FCB and Central Bank over the past 65 years.

The public can view the art exhibition from August 25 to September 23; Tuesdays –Saturdays from 10 am to 6 pm and 2 pm -6 pm on Sundays.
