Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Radio Isla TV

“I feel amazing after losing 10 lbs in two weeks,” reader says Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Cayman Compass

Readers are asked to note that Op-eds do not necessarily reflect the opinions or beliefs of Loop Cayman.

by ‘Happy’

Stuffing my face with food was fun for a while. It stopped being exciting, however, when I gained so much weight that I could not fit into my clothes or pass by an object without some part of me knocking it over. Eventually, my new weight gains not only affected my coordination and wardrobe, but my self-esteem. Fearing that things could get out of control, I decided to make a change. I adjusted what I ate, along with my mealtimes. It changed my life.

Changes

After two weeks of eating better, my mind was more alert, I was thinking clearly and focused. I noticed this both at work and in my personal life.

At my job, for example, I was executing tasks quicker and was more organised. I also accepted more responsibility and additional work.

For once, I was happy to be at work rather than feeling trapped there until “5:00” doing mindless tasks. I also realised that it was not the job that was making me frustrated and unhappy all the time, but, instead, how I felt about myself, which impacted how I felt about everything else, including work.

Socially, the weight loss earned me compliments. People wanted to know what I was doing to make my body look so good. They wanted to know the secret.

The secret

The secret, I found, was simple.

First, I decided that the weight in my twenties was my target weight (yours may be different).

Then I changed my consumption from greasy food and products with high carbohydrates, high sugar and high fat to a mix of greens, low sugar, low fat, low carbohydrates and sufficient protein.

Lastly, I adjusted my sleeping habits, sleeping for more hours each night.

These changes, combined with smaller portions of food at lunch and dinner and exercising lightly (at first), resulted in a loss of 10 pounds in two weeks (I felt amazing seeing and feeling the results).

Now, in your case, your body composition and height could be different from mine. You may also have underlying health issues which restrict you from eating certain foods or even exercising. I mention this because these distinctions may contribute to different outcomes.

For example, the Mayo Clinic says that “In some people, obesity can be traced to a medical cause, such as Prader-Willi syndrome, Cushing syndrome and other conditions.”

Medical problems, such as arthritis, also can lead to decreased activity, which may result in weight gain.

Some medications can lead to weight gain if you don’t compensate through diet or activity. These medications include some antidepressants, anti-seizure medications, diabetes medications, antipsychotic medications, steroids and beta blockers.

The Mayo Clinic explains further.

In addition, the Mayo Clinic noted that there may be “genetic, behavioral, metabolic and hormonal influences on body weight” which may impact weight.

Therefore, before adjusting your diet or embark on any programme, you should check with your doctor to highlight any concerns with your plans.

Once you find what works for you, it can make all the difference for you mentally, socially and physically. A new, healthier lifestyle that it is a good fit for you.

GEA installs Solar Photovoltaic System at Kamwatta Primary School

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana

The Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), in July 2022, installed a 3.16kWp Solar PV system along with a 19.2kWh Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Kamwatta Primary School in Region One (Barima-Waini).

The items for the installation at the Kamwatta Primary School were provided by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support Government’s sustainable energy interventions at community/public buildings in the Hinterland.

Kamwatta is a riverain satellite village of Santa Rosa/Moruca located along the Moruca River, in Region 1 (Barima-Waini). GEA conducted an Energy Needs Assessment earlier in 2022 in the village with the objective of providing energy for the Primary School.

The Guyana Energy Agency, in exercising its mandate, provided support to the Primary School for the transportation and installation of the solar PV and battery energy storage systems.

This initiative will provide a renewable, stable and reliable electricity supply to the Primary School for its daily activities, benefiting approximately 328 students and 27 staff, including teachers and ancillary staff. Also, its operation will result in the avoidance of an estimated 2,715 kg of CO2 emissions annually.

The teachers present at the time of the solar PV system’s installation expressed their gratitude for the initiative, stating that it will allow them to better utilise the Primary School’s services and provide better learning opportunities for the students. GEA’s Engineers provided training to two (2) male and two (2) female teachers at the facility on the operation and maintenance of the system. [Press Release]

Alliance For Change (AFC) Executive Member, Beverly Alert, is among candidates being considered to replace Raphael Trotman in the National Assembly.

The AFC announced on Wednesday that Trotman will be resigning as a Member of Parliament next week to allow for rotation and space for new leadership training.

A party source confirmed to this publication today that Alert is the preferred choice of the candidates under consideration. However, the source indicated that the AFC Committee will be meeting soon and a decision is likely to be made then.

Parliament is currently in recess and is expected to resume sitting in early October, by which time the AFC is expected to have a new candidate selected to be sworn-in.

Alert has been a long-standing member of the AFC. Under the previous APNU/AFC administration, she served as Head of the Department of Public Information as well as Advisor to the Minister of Natural Resources.

She was also named as a potential candidate for the membership of the new Public Procurement Commission earlier this year but did not make the shortlisted-five names.

UWP Urges Government To Protect Public Access to Gros Piton, Anse L’Ivorgne Beach – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

The United Workers Party is alarmed at reports that access to the Gros Piton trail andAnse L’Ivorgne beach is blocked by a developer and is calling on the Philip J PierreAdministration to make the protection of Saint Lucia’s World Heritage Site a priority.

The lack of attention and lackluster response by the Government to this significantissue blatantly exposes the continued hypocrisy of the St Lucia Labour Party; sayingone thing while in opposition and something else when in office.

Saint Lucians have a right to access our nation’s national treasures and the Gros Pitontrail should never have been obstructed in any way, preventing many who make aliving on this trail from earning their daily bread.

Saint Lucians and visitors have been using this trail for decades and it is a source of revenue for tour guides, water taxi operators, land and sea excursionists and vendors.

Their livelihoods have been put at risk while the Government turns a blind eye.

The fact that this was allowed to happen is an indictment on the current MP for Soufriere, the current administration and the Soufriere Development Foundation.

Although the Department of Planning has stated there’s registered vehicular access to the beach and queen’s chain the access, the UWP is informed, this is still blocked by the developer.

It must be stated that while in Government, the United Workers Party paid carefulattention to the Pitons Management Area (PMA) and then Minister for PhysicalPlanning, and Soufriere/ Fond St Jacques MP, Honourable Herod Stanislas addressedin great detail the development in the area of Anse L’Ivrogne, explaining the historyof Anse L’Ivrogne development and the steps taken by the then Government toensure the development did not prevent local access or put the World HeritageStatus at risk.

The Minister at the time outlined the guidelines for the PMA contained in thenPMAand the Soufriere Region Integrated Development Plan, otherwise known as theHyder report, 2008, and The Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC) Study of 2013.

The area in question was sold by Mondesir Estates to a business senior executive fromCanada in January of 2015 under the tenure of Dr Kenny Anthony, who also grantedthe proposed buyer the status of an “Approved Developer.”

The deed of sale for the property is dated 19th January 2016 also during the tenure of the Dr. Anthony administration.

In managing this situation, while in Office the UWP administration, worked with thedeveloper to ensure the proposed development site falls within policy area 1 of thePitons Management Area and according to the Design Guide of the Limits of Acceptable Change Study of 2013.

To that end the UWP administration rejected the initial plans of the developer due to the fact that it was not in keeping with the rules which govern the area.

The UWP only approved plans that kept to the guidelines and aesthetics of the area and monitored this development every step of the way.

Considering recent developments, it would seem that the SLP Government, MPEmma Hippolyte, the Minister for Planning, the Soufriere Development Foundation, the National Trust and so-called watch groups that were very active under the UWPadministration have dropped the ball and failed the people of Soufriere and SaintLucia.

The United Workers Party will challenge any moves to prevent locals from accessingour beaches, nature trails and protect our status as a World Heritage Site.
