Guyana Confirms First Monkeypox Case – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: St. Lucia Times News

GUYANA has recorded its first confirmed case of the Monkeypox virus with the first infected person already placed in institutional isolation.

This first case was confirmed on Monday by Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony in a recorded statement.

He noted that over the last weekend, there was a suspected case of monkeypox as the individual presented with all the clinical signs of the disease.

The case was confirmed as health officials were able to collect samples and do the required testing here.

The index case was identified as a male from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) who is currently in his 50s.

It was revealed that this patient does not have a recent travel history. He started developing signs of the Monkeypox and showed up at the hospital.

“We have since isolated the patient. So, that patient is now in an isolated area at the Ocean View Hospital, and that patient is stable and is doing very well,” Minister Anthony said.

He mentioned that some amount of contact tracing was done as persons who were in contact with the infected man were already contacted and are currently in quarantine.

Meanwhile, President, Dr. Irfaan Ali on the sidelines of an event on Monday, mentioned that Guyana has had systems in place since the announcement of the Monkeypox outbreak by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a public health emergency of international concern in July.

“We had the systems in place, so I’m very confident the Ministry of Health will be dealing with this. As a matter of fact, we have already ordered, some time ago, the vaccines although they are in very limited supply,” the President said.

President Ali went on to say that the system at the Ocean View facility has already been activated and with the confirmation of this first case, there will be greater monitoring.

He went on to add that at this time there will be no restrictions put in place as he mentioned that there is no need for those, calling instead for persons to be responsible.

President Ali also confirmed that the family of the man who is Guyana’s first case was already tested, and will be isolated even as contact tracing will take place.

According to the Health Minister, a lot of surveillance personnel at various borders and healthcare facilities in the country have already been trained to detect the virus.

To this end, he mentioned that the ministry has been working along with the Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO), and through this collaboration, many persons were sent abroad for training and have returned and shared their knowledge to healthcare staff here.

The Health Minister said, “We have prepared for it. Our team is on the ball. They have been able to detect this, and we’re now working to treat the patient. The patient is stable, and we will continue working with that patient to make sure that everything is fine.”

He added that the ministry has already placed an order for some monkeypox vaccines which is currently in high demand across the world. The ministry he said has been working with the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) to source same.

Dr. Anthony went on to say that the hope is to have that first set of vaccines here within another month.

Monkeypox, according to the WHO, is a virus which is transmitted to humans with symptoms similar to those seen in smallpox patients.

The virus can be spread through animal to human transmission, and through direct contact with blood and other bodily fluids.

Human-to-human transmission can result from close contact with respiratory secretions or lesions of an infected person.

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Guadeloupe FranceAntilles

A 22-year-old Barataria man will be placed on identification parades on Wednesday after he was held in a sting operation for advertising items for sale and robbing his supposed clients.

Police reported that between 3.45 pm and 6 pm on Saturday, officers of the San Juan and Morvant Criminal Investigation Department (CID) set up the sting operation in San Juan after several reports were received between May and August.

Police said the man advertised on Facebook that he had tools and electronics for sale and would attract victims from all over the country. He would then advise them to meet him in San Juan where he would issue them a receipt after collecting their money before telling them to follow him to a secluded location nearby for the items. He would then run away with the cash. On one occasion he used a gun.

On Monday and Tuesday police were taking statements from victims who came forward, and are hoping that others do likewise.

On Saturday, police pretended to purchase a television from the man who, after collecting the cash, promised to return soon with his receipt book. He was arrested immediately after.

The man is facing six charges of larceny trick, and one offence of robbery with aggravation. Police said he stole at least $3,000 from one victim and as much as $9,000 from another.

Health Ministry does not anticipate many monkeypox cases in Guyana

Black Immigrant Daily News

Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony

The Health Ministry says it does not anticipate many cases of monkeypox in the country, following the detection of the nation’s first case on Monday.

A 57-year-old man from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) is currently isolated at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown after he tested positive for the disease.

Persons who were recently in contact with the patient were quarantined for monitoring, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony assured the nation on Monday.

Today, the Health Minister further revealed that local experts do not anticipate a monkeypox outbreak on local shores.

“Monkeypox is relatively rare, we only have one case now in Guyana, the patient is very stable, and in the next 14 days, that patient should be discharged, once everything goes well. So, we don’t expect a lot of cases,” he expressed.

Dr Anthony said health authorities are already on the lookout for persons who may become infected with both monkeypox and the novel coronavirus.

“We would be on the lookout for such combinations and if they do occur, the doctors will come up with the appropriate way of treating it,” he said.

Meanwhile, it was revealed that a committee of specialists has been established, where persons can seek guidance and information should they suspect that they have the disease.

Moreover, Dr Anthony further assured that Guyana has capacity to detect the virus from a diagnostic point of view. Adequate laboratory reagents were also sourced to conduct testing at the National Public Health Reference Laboratory.

“Our staff went to Jamaica, they received that training, came back and they have in turn trained a lot of people in the country, so we have capacity to be able to detect the virus. We also made sure that we bought the relevant laboratory reagents so that if we have to run the test, we have that capability of running the test. At our National Public Health Reference Lab, we have several PCR machines and we have configured one of them to be able to do these tests specifically to monkeypox,” he explained.

This new epidemic has been declared a Public Health Emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO), with detection of monkeypox in 96 territories.

From March to present, over 42,666 cases have surfaced globally. Across the Region, cases have been detected in countries like Cuba, Barbados, Jamaica, Bahamas and Brazil.

Brazil has been plagued with over 3000 infections.

Just this month, the Health Minister had announced that Guyana’s borders and ports of entry were being monitored for any potential cases of monkeypox. The Ministry had been putting contingency plans in place, and also deploying resources to treat any cases that arise.

Concerned Citizens Group Responds To Statement On Access To Gros Piton Nature Trail – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: St. Lucia Times News

After reviewing the Aug. 18th, 2022 press statement issued by the department of Physical Development, we concerned St. Lucian citizen, are advancing a number of issues and concerns for the consideration of the public and all interested parties even within the international sphere,. Mindful of the status of this area as a world heritage site.

We are committed in our efforts to expose this ongoing controversy to the scrutiny of all including the IUCN and the World Heritage Centre.

We are perplexed by the recent press statement emanating from the Department of Physical Development. We are indeed curious as to the motivation behind the Department’s statement.

We question the credibility of some of the conclusions contained in the a.m. press statement which in our mind exposes an unfortunate lack of appreciation for historical facts and the reality on the ground in relation to Anse L’ Ivogne.

We wish to raise the following questions and concerns for the attention of the Department of Physical Planning: was there any consultation with the environment and sustainable development unit which has overall responsibility for management of the PMA? Did the Department of Physical Planning consult with the PMA advisory committee as well as the SRDF?

Is the Department of Physical Development now going to see to it that the public vehicular right of way referred to in a.m. press statement is reinstated? This access was truncated by the new owner of Mondesir estate thus effectively cutting off the traditional access. When is this “public vehicular” right of way going to be reinstated?

It seems strange that the Gros Piton trail is not a registered public right of way as this trail has been in existence before motor cars were invented to access their lands and to commute between Fond Gens Libre and the Anse L’Ivogne coastal area for various activities such as fishing, recreation, etc as well as serving as a corridor between the communities of La Pointe and Fond Gens Libre.

One would think that such a pathway of long standing traditional use should be established as a public right of way. This anomaly needs to be addressed at soonest so as to guarantee residents of neighbouring communities continued and uninterrupted access to their lands, rivers and public resources.

Is it true that the Anse L’Ivogne developer, Jeff Robillard, has initiated legal action against the Government of St. Lucia? Is the recent statement by the Department of Physical Development an attempt to appease the developer?

Can we therefore conclude that the Government is now acting under the pressure of intimidation related to the legal proceedings initiated by the new owner of Mondesir estate (Anse L’Ivogne)?

The a.m. press statement from the Department of Physical Development ends by seeking to give assurance to the public of unfettered access to the queen’s chain at Anse L’Ivogne beach – (quote) “The Department of Physical development and Urban Renewal assures the public that access to the queen’s chain and Anse l’Ivogne beach shall remain uninterrupted public access to be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike without the fear of intimidation”. (unquote).

The fact is the public does not currently enjoy “uninterrupted “ access to the queen’s chain and the beach. We recommend that the department deploy officers to the area as a matter of urgency to ensure that the once established public right of way is reinstated.

As concerned and patriotic St. Lucians we make this request on behalf of the residents of La Point, Delcer, Fond Gens Libre, Soufriere and by extension St. Lucians all together.

We call for the spirit of the Neg Mawon to once again roam free in this area which has a history of freedom as is testimony in the name of the adjacent community Fond Gens Libre (valley of the free people).

We call on the department of physical development to act promptly to ensure that freedom of St. Lucians to enjoy our patrimony is re-established with IMMEDIATE EFFECT.
