Four months, no water for Melajo residents

WATER, everywhere but not a drop to drink. That is the cry of over 100 households from the community of Melajo at Vega De Oropouche, which has been without a pipe-borne supply since May.

Speaking to Newsday on Sunday, spokesman for the residents, Emrold James, said they depended on rainwater and a nearby standpipe for water.

James said innovative villagers have taken to filling water drums on their vans, and selling it to others who are without transport. He said some kind-hearted neighbours who have greater storage capacity, have taken to “lending” villagers, containers of water in emergency cases.

With children on vacation, James said the situation was dire.

“Right now, I have water bottles in my trunk which I am taking home to flush the toilet.”

One of his neighbours, Jovica Henderson, said several of his family members lived in the area, including his grandparents, uncle, aunts and brothers.

“We are a low-income community and we cannot afford to buy water. To fill a 500-gallon tank, the cost is $300 and that last just a few days.

“It’s a real strain because, even though we are not getting water, we still have to pay our WASA bill every quarter.”

Darren Clement, another resident, said he lived on a hill so his situation was even worse.

“I have been suffering for over one year because when water comes and the pressure is low, it does not reach my home.”

Clement said six people lived in his household and a 500-gallon tank of water lasted just about a week, once they used it sparingly.

Resident Bobby Ali was so incensed by the horrors of having no water to care for his family of eight, he used some colourful language to refer with WASA.

“If I was f—— depending on WASA, I dead right now.”

James explained, some time ago, trucks traversing the roadway to get to quarry in the area damaged some of the water mains.

Residents subsequently mounted a protest for the bad roads and the water problems.

“That caused some problems. WASA came and fix the lines, but still no water. This problem happening long before the road situation.

“No one can tell us why the water is reaching the standpipe, but going no further to our homes.

“The pressure is so low at the standpipe that we cannot even use a hose to fill barrels on van trays. People have to full these barrels by the bucket.”

He said they really need the situation resolved.

WASA’s communication manager, Daniel Plenty, via WhatsApp message said a WASA team would be dispatched to the area on Monday to resolve the issue.

Twenty-six-year-old Linden Fordyce also called ‘Blacka’ on One Mile, Wismar Linden is wanted by the police for the murder of 28-year-old Rosmarisf Revolledo Torres also called “Mary” who was shot dead during an altercation at Mowasie Landing on Friday.

It was reported that on the day in question, Torres’ sister, her two friends, and a male, Andrew, were consuming alcohol next to the deceased’s shop.

At the time, the suspect who also operates a shop in the area was engaged in a heated argument with his 18-year-old girlfriend. In trying to make peace, one of Torres’ Andrew went over to the suspect’s house and asked him to behave himself.

Torres also spoke with the suspect about his behaviour, but this angered him.

This resulted in a heated argument between Torres and the suspect. At the time of the argument, Torres was carrying a cutlass in her hands and she started to fire chops at the suspect but missed.

In retaliation, the suspect picked up several pieces of bricks and started to pelt Torres and the others.

Torres along with her 12-year-old daughter, sister, and two friends escaped in some bushes about 250 feet away from the landing.  The suspect reportedly climbed onto a motorcycle and went after them.

Police stated that Torres’s daughter told investigators that the suspect, who was armed with a suspected pump-action shotgun, discharged three rounds in their direction during which her mother and another woman, Eliannys Perozo, received injuries.

Her mother, she stated, fell on her back and became motionless. Torres’s sister reportedly made it back to the landing and raised an alarm. The matter was immediately reported to the Police via a 911 call.

Upon their arrival, Police ranks found Torres lying on her back with gunshot injuries to her upper left back, left ribs, and upper left thigh. On the hand, Perozo sustained a wound to her left side head, and three wounds to her right shoulder.

The scene was processed during which three pairs of slippers, a silver chain, three beer bottles, a small pair of scissors, and a red head tie were found.

Torres and Perozo were taken to the Mahdia District Hospital where Torres was pronounced dead. Perozo was treated and admitted as a patient in a stable condition.

The Police are asking anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of Linden Fordyce to contact them on telephone numbers 225-6940, 2258196, 227-1140, 911 or the nearest police station.

Jamaican drowns, brother missing after jumping off ‘Jaws’ bridge in US Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

A Jamaican man, Tavaris Bulgin, of Palmers Cross, Clarendon, drowned and his brother, Tavaughn, is missing and feared dead after a late-night jump off a popular bridge in Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, United States on Sunday.

According to the Vineyard Gazette, an extensive recovery effort for a second man was halted on Monday after what it said was a late-night group jump off the big bridge on Beach Road in Oak Bluffs.

Oak Bluffs Police Chief Jonathan Searle said nine people jumped off the bridge late Sunday night.

“Two of the nine got into trouble swimming. The two were in their 20s,” Searle said. He told MV Times that since a death occurred, the investigation will be taken over by the district attorney’s office.

Loop News understands that Tavaris and Tavaughn are the sons of the Reverend Keith Bulgin, the pastor of the Palmers Cross New Testament Church of God.

Edgartown Police Lieutenant Chris Dolby said police received a call around 11pm Sunday, stating that a group of swimmers had jumped off the bridge and alerting police to “swimmers in distress”.

“Two did not remain with the group and that group called in that they have two missing friends,” he said.

Tavaris was found at 6:20 Monday morning, Searle said. The chief said the search radius includes all of Sengekontacket Pond and stretched several miles offshore.

“It’s extremely large,” he said.

Reports are that within minutes of the call, Oak Bluffs and Edgartown rescue boats were searching the area and soon after helicopters, boats and divers conducted multiple searches inside and outside of Sengekontacket Pond. Marker buoys were dropped and followed and their paths and locations searched multiple times, according to Oak Bluffs Fire Chief Nelson Wirtz.

Shoreline searches were conducted on foot and by UTV along all the northern-facing shoreline from the small bridge to a bend in the road as well as the pond side.

About 11am, responders announced that they were “calling off the main body of the search”, Chief Wirtz said.

A Coast Guard cutter will remain offshore until later Monday afternoon or evening.

“At this point, because of tide changes, the victim could be on either side” of the bridge, Chief Wirtz said.

“It is a recovery, so we take things slowly and methodically … hopefully we can give the family some closure soon,” he said. “It’s really is up to the visibility and tides.”

The bridge, popularly known as the Jaws bridge because of its role in the movie filmed on the island, is a popular spot for jumping despite signs telling people not to jump.
