Water Authority disconnections for Monday, August 15 Loop Cayman Islands

Water Authority is advising members of the public that the next set of disconnections will occur on Monday, August 15 and will affect Cayman Brac, Industrial Park, Windsor Park, Crewe Road and Central George Town.

If you are a customer in one of these areas and have a past due balance, Water Authority is encouraging you to pay your bill online using the following link: https://tinyurl.com/4vhvtaa4.

Customers are also reminded that the Water Authority offers payment agreements to customers who have had a leak, are facing an unexpectedly high bill, or who are experiencing personal hardships and require financial assistance as a result.

If you know that you are not going to be able to pay your entire bill on time, please contact the Customer Service Department via email at info@waterauthority.ky or by telephone at 949-0094 at your earliest convenience before the payment due date to discuss the possibility of a payment agreement.

Otherwise, services may be disconnected.

Salud realizará vacunación a la comunidad LGTTBQ por viruela símica

Con 50 casos confirmados de viruela símica en Puerto Rico, el Departamento de Salud (DS), realizará una vacunación este próximo domingo, 14 de agosto de 9:00 de la mañana a 3:00 de la tarde en el edificio F de la agencia en Río Piedras.

“Nuevamente, tal cual sucedió con el COVID-19, comenzamos a aunar esfuerzos con todos los sectores para llevar salud a todos los grupos poblaciones. En este escenario, accedemos a la vacuna para las personas consideradas contactos e identificadas a través del Sistema de Vigilancia y Rastreo de la Oficina de Epidemiología. Exhortamos a estás personas que se den cita, protejan su vida para así evitar cadenas de transmisión y contagios”, dijo el secretario, Carlos Mellado López, quien enfatizó que habrán 500 vacunas disponibles para administrar.

Esto surge en un esfuerzo con las organizaciones Coaí, Inc, Puerto Rico para Todes y True Self Foundation, bajo la finalidad de continuar brindando herramientas de prevención a la población y salvaguardar su salud.

Al momento en la Isla se han administrado 247 vacunas JYNNEOS. Se han recibido 2,807 y se han distribuido 1,056 vacunas.

Por su parte, Pedro Julio Serrano, presidente de Puerto Rico para Todes, expresó, “exhortamos a las personas de nuestras comunidades LGBTTIQ, que cumplan con los requisitos de esta primera fase de vacunación masiva, a que acudan a esta actividad de vacunación que se llevará a cabo este domingo en el Departamento de Salud en Río Piedras. Es imperativo que las personas LGBTTIQ, de la misma forma que nos vacunamos contra el Covid, prioricemos este proceso de vacunación de la viruela símica”.

“Aunque no es una infección de transmisión sexual, la viruela símica ha afectado a personas de nuestras comunidades LGBTTIQ y por ende, invitamos a las personas que cumplen con los criterios a vacunarse de inmediato ante la emergencia que nos encontramos. Tenemos que protegernos para detener la propagación de este virus lo antes posible”, indicó por su parte, José Joaquín Mulinelli, director ejecutivo de Coaí, Inc.

Mientras que, Michael Pagán Castañer, director ejecutivo de True Self Foundation, añadió “aunque todos estamos a riesgo de exposición y contagio por la viruela símica, personas de nuestra comunidad LGBTTIQ, particularmente hombres gays, bisexuales y otros hombres que tienen sexo con hombres, se están afectando de manera desproporcional. Ante esta emergencia de salud pública, es momento de solidaridad y de acción. No de estigma. Por esto, invitamos a todo aquel que cualifique en esta etapa inicial al esfuerzo de vacunación masiva que estará llevando a cabo el Departamento de Salud en Río Piedras este domingo”.

Cabe mencionar que bajo esta fase son elegibles aquellos contactos cercanos con personas con resultado confirmado o sospechoso a viruela símica. También que en los pasados 21 días hayan tenido múltiples contactos sexuales y tuvieron un contacto de piel con piel.

Sujeto desnudo llega al techo de iglesia en Lares

La Policía investiga un incidente en el cual un hombre llegó hasta el techo de la iglesia católica de Lares, a eso de la 1:30 de la madrugada del sábado.

Según se informó, en el lugar se arrestó a un hombre de 24 años, ya que éste brincó el portón de la iglesia católica frente a la plaza de recreo.

De acuerdo a la investigación, el mismo se encontraba desnudo en el techo de la iglesia, y cuando las autoridades intervinieron con él, se encontraba aturdido, y alegaba no saber cómo había subido la estructura.

El bombero Salvador Vargas bajó al hombre que fue transportado hacia el Centro de Diagnóstico y Tratamiento de Lares donde recibió asistencia médica.

Luego fue referido para el hospital La Montaña en Utuado.

El sacerdote Luis Javier Rivera Rivera no tiene interés de continuar con el caso.

The police made a grisly discovery of the body of missing correctional officer Shannon ‘David’ Briscoe, 38, in a gully in Seaview Gardens, St Andrew, on Saturday.

Briscoe, who is from Seaview Gardens, has been missing since August 11.

He worked at the Horizon Adult Remand Centre in Kingston.

Briscoe’s car was found in Trench Town, western Kingston on Friday, while his bank card was found in an ATM in downtown Kingston.

He was last seen about 5pm on August 11, en route to Half-Way-Tree and Seaview Gardens.

According to Egeton Newman, president of the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS), Briscoe was moonlighting as a taxi operator at the time of his death.

Newman said Briscoe had an “official” taxi.

The president of the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services also said that 36 taxi operators have been killed since the start of the year.

The police are seeking your help to find 41-year-old Adrian Bartley otherwise called ‘Teddy’, a labourer of Claremont Housing Scheme in Old Harbour, St Catherine who has been missing since Sunday, August 07.

He is of dark complexion, medium build and about 170 centimetres (5 feet 7 inches) tall.

Reports from the Old Harbour Police are that Bartley was last seen at home and has not been heard from since. His mode of dress is unknown.

Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Adrian Bartley is asked to contact the Old Harbour Police at 876-983-2255, 119 police emergency number or the nearest police station.

Public school leaders are being reminded that blocking students from entering the school compound because of non-compliance with rules, should not be the first disciplinary action.

This is in keeping with efforts by the Ministry of Education and Youth to reduce discriminatory practices in schools while addressing the need for discipline among students.

Portfolio Minister, Fayval Williams, spoke on the matter during the first consultation on the Ministry’s draft Dress and Grooming Policy for Public Educational Institutions, with school leaders and Deans of Discipline at Jamaica College in Kingston recently.

“We are saying that going first to locking out a child is never acceptable at our schools. Never. There have to be other ways of dealing with it, other than using the draconian way of locking them out of school because that has all kinds of issues associated with it,” she said.

“We have to get more creative than that when there is a violation of the rule,” she emphasised.

Minister Williams noted that while the ministry understands that schools operate in varying contexts, barring students from entering contravenes article 28 of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child, as well as the 2004 Child Care and Protection Act.

“We are also aware that there are cultural dynamics and differences of opinion as to what may be considered appropriate and relevant to the child’s education,” she said.

Against this backdrop, she further disclosed that the proposed policy will establish a comprehensive framework for dress and grooming for public schools while taking into consideration cultural identity, climate situations, socio-economic conditions of parents and the aims of educational institutions.

She is therefore urging school leaders and board members to have their own “documented student dress and grooming [rules],” in keeping with the mandate of the ministry, to prevent further conflicts on the matter.

Discussions on the draft policy is to inform, educate, and garner feedback from key stakeholders and to increase their participation in its development.

This is the first in a series of consultations that will also involve students and parents.
