British Airways to commence operations in Guyana in 2023

British Airways will commence operations from the United Kingdon to Guyana in 2023 but tickets are expected to go on sale from this week. British Airways joins several other airlines that provide air travel out of Guyana.

The announcement was made on Tuesday at a press conference at the Public Works Ministry.

“Today’s announcement and the start of selling of tickets are to ensure the adequate lead time and a proper rollout of this service,” Public Works Minister, Bishop Juan Edghill noted.

He stated that the airline will operate twice weekly service to Guyana. The aircraft, a Boeing 777 has a 332-seating capacity.

This now doubles the amount that is carried by any other aircraft at the CJIA. The cost of fights is also expected to be cheaper due to the size of the aircraft.

However, there will not be direct flights from Guyana to London since the aircraft will be in transited in St. Lucia which will also open new opportunities for that country.

“These flights will be coming through St Lucia and that means that were opening up really a new market apart from British airways bringing in European visitors or tourists, the fact that the flight will be coming in and out through St Lucia, it gives St Lucia a direct link with Guyana and that could also bring in a lot of people from the eastern Caribbean into Guyana directly,” Edghill noted.

Meanwhile, British High Commissioner to Guyana Jane Miller stated that this developmment will open new opportunities that will strengthen Guyana and UK relations.

“It reflects a growing confidence globally in Guyana both in its tourism as an economic hub for the Latin American and the Caribbean, so it thinks with that new confidence people like British Airways are coming in seeing huge opportunities,” she explained.

In addition, she added that this will give an opportunity to the people of the UK to experience Guyana’s rich biodiversity and tourist attractions.

Police now institute murder charge against youth for death of Berbice businessman

Murder accused, Dave Singh and murdered businessman,Vickram Seubarran

The prosecution on Wednesday withdrew the manslaughter charge which was instituted against Dave Singh last week and is now charging the 23-year-old man with murder.

Singh is now being charged for the murder committed on 53-year-old Vickram Seubarran who was found with a knife stuck in his back on August 1, 2022.

At the New Amsterdam Magistrate on Wednesday, Prosecutor, Morrison told the court that the new murder charge was instituted following advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Magistrate Renita Singh told the accused who appaired virtually that while manslaughter is a bailable offense, murder is not, and as such, he was remanded to prison until September 13, 2022.

Singh was on Friday last granted bail in the sum of $750,000 on the unlawful killing charge.

The 23-year-old labourer had reportedly confessed to killing Seubarran after he was arrested by the Police one day after the businessman’s body was found.

Upon his arrest, the suspect told investigators that he and the victim had shared a sexual relationship and that he used to visit the man’s home quite regularly.

He confessed that, on July 31, 2022, the victim had invited him to his home, and they had consumed alcohol and were engaged in sexual intercourse.

Further, he stated that as he was leaving, the victim wanted to have more sexual intercourse, but he refused. This led to an argument and ultimately a scuffle.

He told detectives that he went into the kitchen, took a knife, and stabbed the victim three times, after which he left the house.

Following his confession, he was taken back to the scene, where he pointed detectives to the area where he had disposed of the handle of the murder weapon. The area was searched, but the handle was not recovered.

El alcalde de San Sebastián, Javier Jiménez Pérez, confirmó hoy en RADIO ISLA que su ayudante especial, que tiene 71 años de edad y a quien se le imputó de haber cometido agresión sexual en contra de una joven de 25 años, fue suspendido de su empleo.

“Es un ayudante mío, sí, los detalles del caso están bajo investigación”, manifestó Jiménez Pérez.

Unas 500 ofertas de empleo están disponibles para diferentes plazas en el área metropolitana, por lo que Caribbean Temporary Services (CTS) realizará una feria de empleo este viernes, 12 de agosto, en el Museo del Deporte de Guaynabo.

La portavoz de CTS, Glenda Burgos, detalló que las posiciones disponibles son para trabajar en call centers, en áreas de servicio al cliente, producción, almacenes, choferes, vendedores casa por casa, así como puestos de oficina, contabilidad y en el área de hoteles (food and beverage).

“En estos momentos en que los ciudadanos toman determinaciones importantes, Caribbean Temporary Services se une a nuestros clientes en el esfuerzo de atraer recursos a nuestra fuerza trabajadora, sirviendo de vehículo para simplificar el proceso de reclutamiento. Para este evento estamos solicitando que la persona llegue preparada para ser entrevistada y contratada al momento”, explicó Burgos.

Top performers’ teachers overjoyed but not surprised Loop Barbados

The teachers who stand proudly behind this year’s Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination’s top performing girl and boy were “surprised but not surprised” with their results.

Loop delivered the news unknowingly to the principal and teacher of Renelle Best over at St Gabriel’s Primary School. But it was a joy to watch as J4 teacher Susanna Gall held her chest and congratulated her student saying that she deserves it.

Moving her hand between her chest and her mask as she seemingly fought to catch her breath with not only the fact that Renelle got a raw score of 100 in both Mathematics and English, it was a fresh set of breathlessness when she processed that Renelle is the overall top student on the island for this year’s sitting.

Gall said:

“The words are…not coming. I am indeed speechless in a positive way.

“I am extremely happy for her cause she has consistently worked at that excellent peak… So I’m excited but still not surprised!”

Meanwhile, over in St George at St George Primary, a quiet and more composed Kathy-Ann Spencer said, “I’m so proud of him…I did not expect this, but I’m not surprised because he has been working consistently well throughout the two years that I taught him and I know that he was working well even before he came to me in Class 3. Sometimes we tend to forget the teachers who taught these children when they are younger but that preparation and that standard of excellence began from way down in Infants.”

Le monde de la yole a perdu un ancien patron, Albert Emérancienne, décédé hier (mardi 9 août) à l’âge de 78 ans des suites d’une longue maladie. 

Ancien patron de la yole saintannaise durant de nombreuses années, il avait créé la surprise en 2008 en offrant une 5è place au Tour de la Martinique sous l’appellation de l’époque « Hollywood Chewing-gum / Snack Elizé ». D’origine vauclinoise, il décide en 2012 de retourner dans sa commune natale, sur une autre yole, après s’être assuré que la relève était bien présente.

C’était chose faite, puisqu’après Gérald Beuze, alors âgé de 22 ans, un autre jeune, Marc-Emmanuel Florian, a pris le relais en 2015.

Président d’honneur des bébés yoles

An 2010, Albert Emérancienne avait été président d’honneur des 25 ans des bébé yoles, et lors du Tour de 2019, une bouée au nom d’Ernest et Albert Emérancienne avait été posée au niveau de château-Paille. Il a formé plusieurs jeunes yoleurs qui lui ont toujours été reconnaissants.

Surnommé « Le loup de mer » par ma présidente de l’association Ay Douvan, Cécile Monrose, Albert Emérancienne n’a jamais arrêté de jeter un coup d’œil sur ses poulains par sa présence auprès d’eux à chaque compétition. La maladie a eu raison de lui. Sa sagesse manquera à toutes celle et tous ceux qui l’ont côtoyé.

La canicule moins sévère qu’en juillet mais plus longue

 La vague de chaleur gagnait comme prévu du terrain mercredi avec des températures entre 33 et 37 degrés dans le sud-ouest de la France et désormais 18 départements en alerte, alors que plusieurs incendies brûlent dans le pays et notamment en Gironde.

Il fait globalement moins chaud que lors de la canicule de mi-juillet quand nombre de records ont été battus avec des thermomètres dépassant 40°C dans plusieurs régions, dont Nantes qui avait subi 42°C – il avait alors pour la première fois fait plus de 40°C au Royaume-Uni.

Mais l’épisode actuel est “plus durable à l’échelle du territoire national”, dit Météo-France: il a démarré le 31 juillet et après une accalmie la semaine dernière, est reparti, avec des journées brûlantes et des nuits chaudes, ce qui est la définition des canicules et explique leur danger pour les personnes vulnérables, puisqu’on parvient plus difficilement à refroidir son corps la nuit.

Le Morbihan et le Finistère ont été ajoutés mercredi en fin d’après-midi à la liste des 16 départements où les citoyens doivent être “très vigilants” face à la chaleur, a annoncé l’institut météorologique. Il fera jeudi entre 33 et 36 degrés en Bretagne, et de 36 à 40 degrés plus au sud.

Au cran inférieur, 36 départements au total sont placés en vigilance jaune (“soyez attentif”), avec l’ajout de Paris et de plusieurs en Ile-de-France (Yvelines, Seine-et-Marne, Essonne), du Nord ou encore de l’Isère.

Les pouvoirs publics alertent des risques pour la santé et Météo-France a invité toute la population, “même les sujets en bonne santé” à continuer les gestes de précaution: boire, manger “comme d’habitude”, ne pas sortir pendant les heures chaudes (11h-21h).

A Villelongue-de-la-Salanque près de Perpignan, Sonia Gara raconte ne pas sortir “aux heures chaudes”, et s’hydrater davantage. “Il n’y a pas de vent. Le soir, ça rafraîchit très peu”, résume cette professeure des écoles de 41 ans.

Les fortes chaleurs vont gagner progressivement les régions plus au nord avec 35 degrés attendus dès vendredi sur la région parisienne, a par ailleurs indiqué Météo-France.

La canicule devrait prendre fin dimanche avec des orages attendus dans toute la France. 

– Reprises d’incendies –

Mercredi, deux incendies en particulier faisaient rage dans le Maine-et-Loire, et surtout en Gironde, déjà théâtre d’un gigantesque feu il y a un mois dans la même zone, près de Landiras. 16 maisons ont été détruites, un millier de personnes évacuées.

Comme Christian Fostitchenko, 61 ans, évacué avec sa compagne de leur domicile de Saint-Magne, pour la deuxième fois.

“Cette fois, on a vraiment eu peur. Le feu était à moins de 100 mètres de la maison”, dit l’homme.

Selon le ministère de l’Intérieur, Gérald Darmanin, il y a “de grandes suspicions” que cette reprise soit “le fait d’incendiaires” à en juger les “quelques centaines de mètres d’intervalle” des départs de feu, un phénomène “inhabituel”, a-t-il jugé.

Dans la forêt du Maine-et-Loire, entre Angers et Le Mans, 1.200 hectares ont déjà brûlé malgré la présence de 400 sapeurs pompiers.

Face au “risque très élevé d’incendies”, le préfet des Pyrénées-Atlantiques a, de son côté, décidé dans l’après-midi de la “fermeture exceptionnelle” du massif de la Rhune jusqu’à vendredi. 

– Forte sécheresse –

La canicule a accentué la sécheresse historique que traverse la France cet été, et fait chuter les débits des cours d’eau dans de nombreuses régions, multipliant les mesures de restriction d’eau.

93 départements en France métropolitaine sur 96 font actuellement l’objet de restrictions de l’usage de l’eau à différents degrés.

Mercredi, 21 départements étaient en “alerte renforcée”, qui impose des réductions fortes des arrosages et des prélèvements pour l’agriculture, voire des interdictions de certains prélèvements, et 69 sont “en crise”, où même les prélèvements d’eau pour l’agriculture sont interdits.

Dans plus d’une centaine de petites communes en France, les canalisations sont vides et doivent être approvisionnées en eau potable par des camions-citernes.

Dans la ville médiévale de Pernes-Les-Fontaines dans le Vaucluse, les vasques qui font sa renommée sont désormais vides.

Hon. Dr. Terrance Michael Drew Officially Sworn in as St. Kitts and Nevis’ Fourth Prime Minister

Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 06, 2022 (SKNIS): Hon. Dr. Terrance Michael Drew was officially sworn in on Saturday, August 06, 2022, as the fourth Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis by His Excellency Sir S.W. Tapley Seaton, Governor-General, during a significant ceremony at Government House.

Prime Minister Dr. Drew was sworn in after the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) convincingly won the Federal General Elections held on August 05, 2022, taking six of the 11 seats that were contested. He was administered the Oath of Office, the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Secrecy in front of elected representatives of the SKNLP, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, specially invited guests and members of the media.

In delivering remarks, Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Terrance M. Drew publicly thanked the electorate for placing its trust in him and his team when it was called upon to choose the country’s next government.

“It was indeed an esteemed pleasure to be given the opportunity by you the people of St. Kitts and Nevis to be your Prime Minister. I consider it an office of service and I also recognize that it is an office that I do not own and I am only here at the behest of the people,” said Prime Minister Drew. “I also know that I am here for a limited time and during that time I vow to work closely with the members of my Cabinet to be named shortly, to work with those who are in other positions in government and most of all to work with our citizenry.”

Prime Minister Drew pledged to work closely with the sister island of Nevis “so that whatever issues there are that we can solve and resolve to bring our Federation closer to together.”

The honourable Prime Minister said that he was ready to serve.

“I look forward to the next five years to serving the people of St. Kitts and Nevis with distinction, with respect on the principles of good governance, transparency and integrity so that our nation can be counted among those that are the best,” he said.

The other elected members of Prime Minister Drew’s Cabinet will be sworn in at a later date. They are Dr. Denzil Douglas, Konris Maynard, Marsha Henderson, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley and Samal Duggins.

Prime Minister Dr. Drew declared that Monday, August 8, 2022, is a public holiday in the Federation in recognition of the resounding victory at the polls.
