WORC and Border Control warn against work permit scam Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

Over the past few years, a number of advertisements have appeared online offering work to persons interested in moving to the Cayman Islands. Some of these advertisements were false as they did not relate to any actual employment in the Cayman Islands and scammers only sought to obtain monies from innocent victims in exchange for assistance in securing jobs in the Cayman Islands. Regarding this, the Ministry of Border Control and Labour is now advising the public of a new scam, in the form a letter promoting work in the Cayman Islands.

In connection with the latest scam, the Ministry of Border Control and Labour confirmed that is not affiliated with Workforce Opportunities & Residency Cayman (WORC) or Customs & Border Control (CBC).

Reacting to the false promotion, Acting Deputy Chief Officer for the Ministry of Border Control and Labour, Danielle Roberts said:

We are aware of the misrepresentation of ‘temporary work permits’ being circulated on social media using a suspicious Instagram account. While investigations are underway, we caution the public to refrain from engaging with any Government social media that may not seem legitimate. All correspondence sent out by WORC is circulated from our main office in the Cayman Islands only using our official letterhead and signed signatories. Members of the public are cautioned against any entity misrepresenting our organisation and are reminded to do proper diligence and research to ensure they are not being taken advantage of.

While the Ministry of Border Control and Labour indicated that the public should only to consider correspondence to be genuine in cases where the WORC letterhead appears, it has been observed by members of the public that, over the years, fraudsters have also been able to replicate government letterheads or logos from time to time giving job and work permit offers an appearance of authenticity. It is advisable therefore that when members of the public see a job offer, they should verify directly with WORC or the Cayman-based company or agency promoting the opportunity.

UPP launches its Book of Major Achievements with an online version, as well as hard copy

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

On August 10, The United Progressive Party (UPP) launched its promised Book of Major Achievements2004-2014, which chronicles the work, programmes, policies and the Party’s overall accomplishments during its 10-year tenure in public office.

Harold Lovell, the Political Leader of the Party, lauded the compilation of the UPP’s accomplishments and states that the electronic version of the book will be available immediately, with distribution of a limited number of hard copies to follow.

He notes that what started out as a document of seven pages quickly mushroomed into an 80-page book. And while the publication is comprehensive, he says, it does not cover all that the UPP was able to accomplish in its two terms.

Among its feats, Lovell notes that the UPP was able to completely change and restore the image of Antigua and Barbuda, which, internationally, had been viewed as a rogue nation.

He also reminds the public of the many social programmes the Party introduced, many of which are still in existence.

Agriculture, Public Works, and new legislation for the maintenance of children, tabled in 2008, are among the other achievements of which the Political Leader says the Party is proud.

Union demands answers on way forward for ex-LIAT workers

Black Immigrant Daily News

Massiah

OBSERVER Newsco: Union leaders have written to LIAT’s administrator Cleveland Seaforth requesting an audience to discuss shareholder governments’ plans regarding former staff as the cash-strapped regional carrier heads for liquidation. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATSAPP GROUP FOR NEWS UPDATES.

General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union (ABWU) David Massiah told Observer that of grave concern is the fact that the administrator has kept the union in the dark about pertinent issues – chief among them the millions of dollars in severance owed to the airline’s ex-employees.

Massiah wrote in the letter to Seaforth dated Aug. 5 that “it is imperative that serious dialogue be undertaken between yourself…and representatives of the employees almost immediately in order to give us a real sense of what is being planned and the impact it could have on current and former employees of LIAT 1974 Ltd”.

He said the session “should be convened no later than Thursday Aug. 11”, and that the union believes Seaforth has a “statutory duty” to enlighten affected workers.

Massiah continued that the employees’ claim for terminal entitlements predates any consideration for liquidation and “therefore remains current, legally and validly binding and would be expected to be honoured in full”.

Furthermore, Massiah said the deafening silence on the future plans for the airline was gross disrespect to the very union that had been called on to persuade ex-employees to accept the government’s ‘compassionate payment’ offer which equates to a fraction of the total amount owed.

“We think he owes us that. This is why I wrote that letter asking him for an audience with the hopes that we can sit down and discuss the matter professionally,” Massiah told Observer.

When shareholders last met on Aug. 2, outstanding severance and other payments was not on the agenda. Instead, the shareholder governments of Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Barbados, and St Vincent and the Grenadines decided to liquidate the airline and hire a consultant to chart the way forward

“The employees have a vested interest to know exactly what is happening. We need to be told what exactly this liquidation means, and what it is that we are going to get.

“Nothing has been said to us really. We need to have a clear understanding,” the trade unionist said.

The administration process, which initially commenced in July 2020 after the Covid pandemic saw the airline take a nosedive, was expected to last for four months. It has now been more than two years.

Massiah lamented ongoing disengagement between the court-appointed administrator and the employees’ bargaining agent, the ABWU.

“Information has not been coming from him following numerous requests. There seems to be this detachment with the union. Perhaps we did not accede to what the Antigua and Barbuda government did when they made the [compassionate] payment offer.

“We did not believe it was in the best interest of the people,” Massiah explained.

Another bone of contention for the ABWU is the non-inclusion of the union when pertinent decisions about the welfare of the ex-LIAT workers are being discussed.

Speaking specifically about the most recent meeting of the major shareholders, Massiah said, “There was no engagement or invitation. There was nothing in regards to the employees’ legal bargaining agents to discuss the process. Nothing has been said to us.”

He said former employees have been treated with total disregard since the airline was first grounded in early 2020.

“I am very concerned as to the direction and the way that the workers and their bargaining agents have been treated throughout this entire ordeal. It is disrespectful,” Massiah added.

LIAT has been operating a reduced schedule with a limited workforce since November 2020. Ex-staff have been clamouring for their cash since the pandemic put the brakes on travel in March that year

Father, daughter found guilty of killing fisherman

Black Immigrant Daily News

Guilty: Surendra Sukhdeo and his daughter Mandy Sukhdeo

Initially indicted for the capital offence of murder over the beating to death of 22-year-old fisherman Shereffudeen Nazamudeen, Surendra Sukhdeo and his daughter Mandy Sukhdeo have been found guilty of the lesser count of manslaughter.

Their co-accused, Rean Ghani, who is also their neighbour, was found not guilty of both murder and manslaughter when the jurors delivered their verdicts on Wednesday.

In relation to Surendra Sukhdeo and his daughter, the jury found them unanimously not guilty of murder but returned a 10-2 guilty verdict for the lesser count, finding that they unlawfully killed Nazamudeen called “Sheriff” on February 14, 2017, at Ruby, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).

Killed: Shereffudeen Nazamudeen

In light of the verdicts, the father and daughter were further remanded to prison pending a sentencing hearing which is scheduled for September 8.

The trio was represented by a legal team led by Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes, while State Counsel Latifah Elliot, Marisa Edwards, and Simran Gajraj were the prosecutors.

The two Sukhdeos and their neighbour were first tried for the fisherman’s murder in 2021. But with the jury unable to reach verdicts, they were further remanded to prison pending a retrial.

They resided in the Ruby community along with the now dead fisherman.

At the time of this alleged killing, Mandy Sukhdeo had been a Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) Alliance for Change (AFC) Councillor, and her father, a Good Hope/Hydronie Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Councillor.

It was reported that Mandy Sukhdeo had claimed that she had been confronted by Nazamudeen, who had snatched her bag and attempted to escape.

She had reportedly raised an alarm, and residents in the neighbourhood had pursued Nazamudeen. Reports are that he was caught in the ruins of a house.

According to reports, he was tied up and beaten.

Following the beating, the man had suffered severe injuries to his body, and had been taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he subsequently succumbed.

Three pieces of wood, suspected to be the murder weapons, were recovered from the scene by detectives. The woman and her father were immediately arrested, while Ghani was apprehended the following day, after he was allegedly implicated by neighbours.

Chastanet: General Elections ‘Might Be Sooner Than We Think’ – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: St. Lucia Times News

Declaring that his United Workers Party (UWP) is ‘very relevant’, opposition leader Allen Chastanet has indicated that the party has had an internal discussion and would start preparing for the next polls.

“And the reality is that general election, the way things are going right now, might be sooner than we think,” the former Prime Minister told a news conference on Wednesday.

He asserted that the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) won parliamentary seats by a wide margin in the July 26, 2021, general elections.

The SLP government currently enjoys a 15-2 majority in the House of Assembly.

But Chastanet told reporters that labour got 51 percent of the popular vote, and only 51 percent of the people voted for the SLP.

He also addressed reports of apparent divisions within the UWP.

Chastanet explained that people would think they deserve leadership immediately after an election and before a party convention.

And he explained that leadership would not be limited to the party’s helm but would include chairmanship and executive positions on constituency branches.

“There would be all kinds of people who would give all kinds of theories as to why the party lost and that they can do better,” the Micoud South MP told reporters.

“Is that unique to the United Workers Party? Is that unique to Saint Lucia? Is that unique to politics in general? No!” Chastanet declared.

He disclosed that the UWP would go through an internal process of adjustment.

“We have a process in which we will select the leadership of our party and let us confine ourselves to that process,” he asserted.

He declared that whether he wins or loses, he is committed to the UWP.

“As long as the party continues to share those values, things I can embrace – that I know it’s not about just winning the elections but it’s about once you get in, what are you going to do with that and committed to excellence. I will fully support anyone,” Chastanet stated.

Nevertheless, he noted that it was not to say that he has given up or does not want to be the leader.

“Please don’t misunderstand me. But there’s no way I am going to use my influence in the party to prevent anyone from expressing their opinion, anyone wanting to be in a position of leadership,” he stated.

The UWP expects to hold its convention this year.

Multa de $30 mil al PIP es por sus propias admisiones, dice procuradora interina de las mujeres

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Radio Isla TV
