Detectives in Montego Bay, St James are probing the circumstances surrounding an incident that unfolded on Barnett Street in the parish on Wednesday, August 03.
Reports are that at about 10:30 pm, gunmen attacked the watchman at an establishment along the roadway. He was shot several times.
The gunmen were however challenged by a private security officer who was in the vicinity and saw what was happening. There was an exchange of gunfire and the gunmen fled.
One of the gunmen was later found lying along the roadway with gunshot wounds. A Beretta 9mm pistol fitted with a magazine containing three 9mm rounds was found beside him.
The gunman and the watchman were taken to the hospital, where the watchman was admitted for treatment and the gunman was pronounced dead.
The gunman’s identity has not yet been ascertained. The body was clad in a black shirt, brown shorts, and a pair of sandals. The word crocodile was tattooed on the right forearm. The investigation continues.

Dear Editor,
I am writing to you to express my disappointment in the National Solid Waste Management Authority on their utter negligence on garbage collection in the Oliver/Montrula area. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATS APP GROUP FOR MORE UPDATES
It has been over a week nearing two weeks since the last time garbage was collected in the area. My rubbish bins along with my neighbour’s rubbish has been full to the brim and even other neighbours their garbage is overflowing causing dogs and rats to burst garbage bags and the area looking unsanitary.
I have called National Solid Waste to complain daily about the rubbish not being collected and they told me that a rubbish truck should have collected to the garbage and they never got back to me as promised to find out if indeed the rubbish was collected.
Please, I am kindly asking the National Solid Waste and Management Authority to please collect the garbage in the Olivers/Montreal area.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) continues its trajectory among the top universities internationally. In spite of the COVID-19 pandemic’s challenges upon management operations and financial outlook, The UWI continues to prove its academic excellence and global competitiveness by consolidating its position among the best ranked institutions. This much was confirmed by a recent report from Times Higher Education (THE), the most prestigious university ranking system.
The Latin America Universities Rankings 2022 table published on July 14 by THE shows The UWI consolidating its leading position among the best. It remains the #1 ranked Caribbean university and has maintained its excellent position within the top 1% of Latin America’s finest.
In 2018, The UWI debuted in THE’s Latin America University Rankings category; then, 177 universities were ranked having met eligibility criteria from a recognised field of near 2,000. The UWI’s inaugural ranked position was #37. In 2022, The UWI consolidated its elite position at #21 although the number of universities ranked by THE has since increased to 197. The number of officially recognised higher education institutions in Latin America remains estimated at over 1,800.
This excellent performance by The UWI illustrates the continued rise of its international recognition and reputation—a core objective pursued by management in the academy’s five-year Strategic Plan for 2017-2022.
Vice-Chancellor of The UWI, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, commenting on the latest Times Higher Education report stated, “The people of the Caribbean are deserving of a first-class, respected university and this is precisely what we are committed to achieving and sustaining. We are intellectually focused, strategic in our choices and actions, and not distracted in any way. These excellent results are the outcomes of the sustained, smart work of our academics and administrators, students and service providers.”
In THE’s assessment methodology there are five performance areas: Teaching, Research, International Outlook, Industry Income and Research Citations. The UWI scored its most spectacular outcome in the area of Citations of its research publications. In this key area, also identified as research influence, it is ranked #3 out of the 197 best universities, surpassing 18 of the universities ahead of it in final rankings.
“This extraordinary result is a tribute to The UWI’s scholars”, the Vice-Chancellor noted, “…and reflects the very healthy state of intellectualism within the University, and the commitment to publishing globally respected and relevant research.”

Applications for Chevening Scholarships to study in the UK are open between 2 August and 1 November 2022, with applications to be submitted via chevening.org/apply.
Chevening Scholarships are awarded to individuals from all backgrounds who can demonstrate that they have the commitment and skills required to create positive change, and can show how a UK master’s degree will help them do that. The scholarship offers full financial support for scholars to study for any eligible master’s degree at any UK university, whilst also gaining access to a wide range of exclusive academic, professional, and cultural experiences.
Since the programme was created in 1983, over 50,000 professionals have had the opportunity to develop in the UK through Chevening. There are more than 1,500 scholarships on offer globally for the 2023/2024 academic year, demonstrating the UK’s ongoing commitment towards developing the leaders of tomorrow.
Head of Scholarships at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Naomi Rayner, said:
‘As the world continues to tackle major global issues such as climate change, international cooperation is more essential than ever. El representante por el Partido Independentista Puertorriqueño (PIP), Denis Márquez, confirmó en RADIO ISLA que la medida que busca la salida de la Applied Energy Systems Puerto Rico (AES) “de una vez y por todas” está radicada.
“Está radicada la legislación para que salga de una vez y por todas AES de Puerto Rico y responda por los daños ambientales. La legislación la hemos radicado y estamos en ese proceso”, afirmó.
AES ha sido vinculada a un sinnúmero de problemas de salud en el Sur de la isla. El presidente del Colegio de Químicos, Luis Cordero, confirmó en este medio que un estudio del acuífero del Sur reveló que el mismo tiene metales que son “tóxicos y cancerígenos” para las personas. Cordero expresó que “no hay duda que vienen de las cenizas” de la empresa AES.

El actor estadounidense Kevin Spacey ha fracasado en su intento de anular el fallo judicial que lo obliga a pagar una indemnización multimillonaria a los productores de la serie ‘House of Cards’, de la que fue suspendido tras salir a la luz una serie de escándalos sexuales que lo involucran.
En noviembre del año pasado, el tribunal dictaminó que Spacey debería pagar al estudio MRC —a cargo de la serie— casi 31 millones de dólares debido a las pérdidas ocasionadas por su despido por acoso sexual.
Spacey había solicitado la anulación de la orden, pero su petición fue denegada este jueves por un juez en Los Ángeles.
“Estamos satisfechos con el fallo del tribunal”, declaró el abogado de MRC, Michael Kump, en un correo electrónico a AP.
La denuncia por parte de la productora desencadenó una lucha legal de más de tres años, en la que MRC declaró que el actor, protagonista de cinco temporadas del proyecto, violó las exigencias de su contrato en cuanto a comportamiento profesional al “incurrir en ciertas conductas en relación con varios miembros del equipo” de rodaje.
MRC se vio obligado a detener la producción de la sexta temporada de la serie, reescribirla para eliminar al personaje de Spacey y acortarla de 13 a 8 episodios para cumplir con los plazos establecidos, lo que supuso decenas de millones en pérdidas, según los documentos judiciales.
Las acusaciones de agresión sexual contra el famoso cineasta dos veces ganador del Óscar se plantearon públicamente por primera vez en 2017, mientras crecía el movimiento ‘MeToo’. Debido a este escándalo, Spacey fue suspendido de la serie de Netflix ‘House of Cards’ y del drama policíaco ‘Todo el dinero del mundo’.

El comisionado de la Policía de Puerto Rico, Antonio López Figueroa, confirmó en RADIO ISLA que los agentes que acribillaron a balazos a un joven de 16 años desarmado el pasado 1 de agosto, están armados. Los hechos ocurrieron en el área de Puerto Nuevo.
Antonio López explicó que las armas que utilizaron los agentes para cometer el acto fueron removidas y las tiene el Instituto de Ciencias Forenses (ICF) para ser analizadas, pero estos ahora poseen otras armas.

Bellevue Plantation was transformed into a fairytale setting last Saturday night as many patrons braved the occasional showers and strong winds to be a part of one of Crop Over’s premium events.

A forest-styled d?cor, accessorized with vines, flowers and the gentle rains provided a scene of enchantment and the presence of a beautiful rain forest at the Waterford venue.
Patrons donned some of their finest threads to match the premium drinks-free event and the exquisitely styled venue and they seized every opportunity to take photographs against the themed backdrops or experience the 360 photo booth.
Along with premium drinks, attendees had their taste buds mesmerized by dishes courtesy of the renowned Chef Creig, and desserts by Lasco and Creamery Novelties Ice Cream.
Patrick the Hypeman and DJ Jus Jay produced another masterful set of energy and musical diversity which rocked the crowd for their entire presentation.
Hutchy & Sizz, along with DJ Russian completed the DJ roster and they ensured that patrons got lost in the music with classic and present soca and dancehall hits, along with some of the biggest songs in hip-hop and afrobeats.
Lead Pipe & Saddis maintained the exceptional quality of the event during their tenure on stage by performing hit songs such as “Shackle out”, “Ah feeling”, “Sometimes” and the obvious crowd favorite “Nothing on you”.
A stellar firework display added the perfect accessory for a night where patrons lost themselves in the music, in the vibes and in paradise.
