Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 30, 2022 (SKNIS): A seven-member CARICOM election observer team is scheduled to arrive in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis from Monday, August 1, 2022, to observe the Federal elections which take place on August 5, 2022.
The CARICOM team will be led by Mr. Sase Gunraj of Guyana, the Chief of Mission. The team will comprise observers from Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Jamaica, Suriname and Haiti.
Election observation/monitoring is a practice undertaken by an independent body that assesses the standards and therefore legitimacy of an election. It is important to note that observers do not intervene during an election, instead, they produce reports which are circulated to national governments and their related departments as well as being made publicly available displaying the issues found alongside recommendations for the future. All of the activities are approached from a completely non-partisan perspective, and observation focuses on the electoral strengths and weaknesses rather than being concerned with the political outcome of any particular vote. This allows observation organizations a degree of legitimacy in assessing an election which could not be gained from a national government which could have an inherent bias.

Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 30, 2022 (SKNFA) — MFCR United Old Road Jets and Hotsprings Bath United played to a 2-2 draw on Friday in the final match of the 2021 SKNFA Premier League Season at the Warner Park. The result had no bearing on the playoff or regulation battle, as the Super Six Playoff teams were already determined before the match. Bath had well survived the relegation zone, with Trafalgar Southstars and TGE Dieppe Bay Eagles already relegated to First Division football.
Bath got on to the scoresheet, the first courtesy of a Malik Stanley own goal in the 30th minute. Old Road however was persistent and Kaylon Liburd, who missed several chances in their last match against Trafalgar Southstars, found the back of the net twice. The first was a header from a beautiful cross from his teammate into the danger zone, scored in the 60th minute and the other was a tap-in from a low cross in the 75th minute. The lead was however short-lived as Bath earned a penalty, which was converted by Phillion Lavia in the 79th minute.
Old Road was actually shorthanded for the second time in a row, forcing coach Alexis Morris and one of his assistants to suit up and take the field. Coach Morris shared his thoughts after the match, about taking the field for the first time in years and why his team had fewer players to play the last two matches of the season. “It’s hard out there but basically when we came to the park tonight and we only had eight players suited up; I just had to make a decision. Luckily, some gears were around so I just decided to put on the boots and help out the team,” he said. He disclosed that there was a disciplinary issue why some of the players were not available to compete in those matches, but he promised to have a totally new team next season. “Old Road United will be regrouping for the 2022-2023 season and I can tell you, when we do come back we will have a brand-new team and we will be a force to reckon with,” Coach Morris said.
Meanwhile, Bath’s Coach Alex Claxton said the match could have gone either way. But he stressed that his objective to stay up in the Premier League on their first season back was achieved. “It’s the end of the season and our objective was met,” Claxton said. “We are happy with the performance of the team and we are going to have some active rest and look forward to preparing for the (new) season,” he added.
So, with the regular season of the Premier League now over, the top six teams have qualified for the Super Six Playoffs, namely: St. Paul’s United at the top of the table winning the regular season; Garden Hotspurs in 2nd place, Cayon Rockets in third place, St. Peters FC in 4th place, Village Superstars in 5th and 6th for Conaree FC. The SKNFA Supers Six Playoffs are due to start in August.

Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 31, 2022 (SKNFA) — E and K Mini Mart Sandy Point FC will join Elco Ltd Security Forces F.C. in the SKNFA Premier League, after earning promotion with a 2-0 victory over Mantab in SKNFA Division 1 Final Four playoffs action at the Warner Park on Tuesday. That match was the tale of the tape of both teams, as the victor would earn a spot in the Division 1 playoff finals.
A draw would have been sufficient for Sandy Point but they took no chances and in the 58th minute, T’Ondre Rouss scored a brilliant goal to give Sandy Point the lead. Then in the 73rd minute, Jahlyan Burt added a second to seal the victory and premier league promotion for Sandy Point. It was not without a cost, however, as Sandy Point had a player sent off with a red card; Dion Taylor in the 77th minute.
Coach of Sandy Point Kenneth Douglas was elated with the victory and the fact that Sandy Point, after being in the premier league several years ago, is back in top-flight football. “I’m happy, I’m elated. I am very, very joyful. Its’ full time that Sandy Point be playing with the elites; the big boys; St. Paul’s, Conaree, Newtown, Cayon. We trained hard all season. That was our goal to get back in the Premier League and I am so happy for the boys,” he said. Coach Douglas disclosed that the players displayed hard work and dedication by coming to training every night and ensuring they played their part to get the desired result. “We are a proud people in Sandy Point and the people of Sandy Point want someplace to go. When there is Premier League football they will be right here supporting us and I am looking forward to the Premier League season,” he said.
Coach Vaughn Patrick of Mantab was obviously disappointed with the result. He congratulated Security Forces and Sandy Point on earning promotions. “I think we came out flat and not creating as many chances and the defensive errors cost us two goals and goals win games,” he said.
In the night’s earlier match, Security Forces ensured their passage to the Premier League and to the Division 1 finals with an emphatic 5-0 drubbing of Conaree Fireballs International. Goal scorers: Lesburt Jeffrey scoring a hattrick in the second of extra time in the first half, 77th and 82nd minutes, Donyelle Francis in the 70th minute and Eversley Fahie in the 84th minute.

OBSERVER Newsco: Sustained efforts from Prime Minister Gaston Browne to revitalise regional carrier LIAT, received a timely boost in the past couple of days with a declaration of support from Grenadian Prime Minister, Dickon Mitchell.
“It’s difficult for me to see why our previous administration did not see the need to support LIAT. I mean, now that we don’t have it, I think we really understand the crucial role that LIAT played in regional travel, regional integration, fostering closer ties, and economic and cultural development, certainly within the OECS”, Mitchell declared during an interview with Good Morning Saint Lucia late last week.
“So, I’m certainly committed [and] my government is committed to doing all that we can to support LIAT or any other version of LIAT that can provide the services that we so desperately need for regional travel.”
Since LIAT was forced to temporarily shutter operations back in 2020, PM Browne has been on a campaign to return the airline, albeit with a slightly different name, to its former glory days.
He has been lobbying LIAT’s fellow shareholder governments – Barbados, Dominica and St Vincent and the Grenadines – to support his vision to restructure the airline and keep it flying, rather than to liquidate it.
Just last month, the government revealed that a proposal is on the table for LIAT’s expansion, with several operational changes intended to make the carrier more efficient. These include applying minimum revenue guarantees, maintaining a reduced fleet of aircraft, and keeping “salaries, wages and other emoluments” low.
Those plans could form part of the wider subregional discussions on air transport which, according to Mitchell, could come to fruition in a matter of months.
“I’m happy to indicate that, in fact, while in St Lucia [recently], OECS Heads would have had a caucus and we recommitted to redoubling our efforts to address the issue of regional air transportation.
“We have a follow-up call with the Caribbean Development Bank for the second of August, and so we really are hoping that by the end of the year, we can come to our citizens with concrete proposals as to how we intend to address this issue,” Mitchell said.
The lawyer-turned-politician also voiced his willingness to reduce the cost of air travel into his country – a move that could inspire countries similarly dependent on tourism, particularly in the context of a vulnerable international market.
“In the case of Grenada, we subsidise international travel. We subsidise American Airlines, we subsidise British Airways to come to Grenada, and so I make bold by saying I have no hesitation in subsidising regional air travel to and from Grenada.
“It’s very important to us as a people, as we try and build our Caribbean civilization, [and] it’s very important to our tourism in Grenada,” the PM added.
As Mitchell mentioned, regional leaders were scheduled to meet with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) yesterday, to further talks on the way forward for regional transportation.

The A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) held a rally on Burnham Court on Tuesday, where they promised to boycott the next sitting of Parliament.
In the wake of the National Assembly’s decision to suspend eight APNU/AFC Members of Parliament for their association with the infamous mace grab, Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton promised that the Opposition will be boycotting the next parliamentary sitting on August 8.
A tug-of-war between APNU+AFC MPs and Parliament Staff after the Opposition Parliamentarians stole the mace from Speaker Manzoor Nadir in December 2021
“We have to be very clear. They have suspended eight of our Members of Parliament. They have a parliamentary session on Monday. Well, they will talk to themselves. They will speak to themselves,” Norton said.
In his address, Norton claimed that the MPs were not afforded a hearing. Last month, the National Assembly adopted a report from the Parliamentary Committee of Privileges, which recommended the suspension of Opposition Chief Whip Christopher Jones, Ganesh Mahipaul, Sherod Duncan, Natasha Singh-Lewis, Annette Ferguson, Vinceroy Jordan, Tabitha Sarabo-Halley, and Maureen Philadelphia over their conduct in the House on December 29, 2021.
Chief Whip Jones, Mahipaul, Duncan and Singh-Lewis have been suspended for four consecutive sittings each over their attempts to disrupt the passage of the Natural Resource Fund (NRF) Bill and ignoring the authority of the Speaker on December 29, 2021.
MPs Ferguson and Jordan are suspended for six consecutive sittings over severe and egregious violations by removing the Parliamentary Mace from its rightful position, not only damaging the object, but also injuring and assaulting a staff of the Parliament Office.
Meanwhile, Sarabo-Halley, who entered the Communication Control Room of the Arthur Chung Conference Centre and destroyed several pieces of audio-visual equipment, is suspended for six sittings.
Additionally, Philadelphia is facing a suspension for six consecutive sittings for verbally assaulting a Parliament staff.
