Euro: les Bleues filent en quarts en s’inquiétant pour Katoto

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Martinique FranceAntilles

WATCH: Usain Bolt’s daughter, Olympia, is off to school Loop Jamaica

They really grow up so fast! Jamaica’s baby and daughter of sprint legend Usain Bolt has already started pre-school.

Sitting in the driver seat of the car with his partner Kasi Bennett in the front seat and Olympia securely strapped in at the back, an excited Bolt shared his first school run moment with his 11 million Instagram followers on Thursday.

“First school run of many,” Bolt said while showing off his daughter in the backseat.

In a lighter moment, the eight-time Olympian teased his partner about getting emotional.

“I know you wanna cry,” he said.

To which Bennett responded: “Mi nah cry…”

The couple welcomed Olympia in May 2020 with Bennett sharing photos of the baby on her birthday.

“We have started a new chapter together with our daughter Olympia Lightning Bolt, I look forward to what the future will bring for us but be reassured that I will be the ROCK for this family,” Bolt wrote on Instagram at the time.

A year later, in June 2021, the couple revealed that they were now parents of twin boys — Saint Leo and Thunder Bolt.

The world record holder in the 100m and 200m retired from competition after the 2017 World Athletics Championships, where he finished third in the 100m.

And although he admitted in a recent interview that he sometimes misses the competition, he shared that his children are keeping him busy.

“I do miss it sometimes when I see the competition, and like when I’m here, and I hear the atmosphere and the energy, I do miss competing. But for me, I’ve been enjoying retirement. I have three kids now, so they have kept me busy and, as you say, a lot of investment. So I’m still working; I’m trying to enjoy it as much as possible,” he said.

63 trained for National Youth Parliament Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The Barbados National Youth Parliament membership (BNYP) has been boosted with a record number of 92 applicants seeking to become Youth Parliamentarians.

On Monday, July 11, 63 of these young persons, including current members, embarked on an intensive training programme at the Accra Beach Hotel in Christ Church.

Coordinated by the Division of Youth Affairs, the training and experiential sessions will focus on parliamentary procedure, debating skills, rules and procedures governing the conduct of government business, and effective communication. Participants will also have the opportunity to tour the Barbados Parliament.

While delivering an overview of the Barbados National Youth Parliament programme, the Director of Youth Affairs, Cleviston Hunte, informed the youth parliamentarians that they have joined a cadre of young people across the region, participating in a similar programme.

He pointed out that there were several benefits to be gained as a member of the organisation, and emphasized that the Youth Parliament programme, was critical to the views of the young people being voiced by young people.

“Your voices must be heard, so you can shape your future,” he said, “so that action can be taken on your behalf.”

Hunte told the participants that it was important for all young people to know and understand politics in the generic sense.

In his opening remarks, Senior Youth Parliamentarian, Pierre Cooke Jr, stated that he was “very happy to see so many aspiring youth parliamentarians.” He also emphasized that youth parliament is a developmental programme that provides support to its members.

The Barbados National Youth Parliament was officially relaunched on June 18, 2014. Membership is open to individuals, students and members of youth organisations and clubs, aged 14 to 23. It is facilitated by the Youth Development Programme of the Division of Youth Affairs in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment.

The BNYP is an opportunity and a platform for young people to learn about politics, democracy, representation and the parliamentary system of Barbados.

Youth Parliamentarians are exposed to a series of training programmes focusing on capacity building, including researching issues, debating skills, leveraging opportunities, and representing the youth voice on national issues.

The sessions at Accra culminated on July 13, when the members of the Barbados National Youth Parliament participated in a mock parliamentary debate.

Today, the participants met again at the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment to continue their training in various subject areas, such as Anti-Violence, Family Crisis, and Behind Bars: Prison Officer Perspectives.

Bajans to save on electricity bills Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

After months of complaints from locals about high electricity bills, Government has sought to provide substantial relief.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced a series of measures that will ease the high cost of living. Addressing the nation, the Prime Minister asserted that “electricity can no longer be viewed as something we can ignore given the increase in fuel oil prices”.

Earlier this year the Government capped the VAT on fuel, as oil prices soared up to US $125 a barrel, so it would not be passed on to Barbadians.

The Prime Minister declared that following consultations with Barbados Light & Power (BL&P), the first 250 kilowatt-hours will be charged at a rate of 7.5 per cent value-added tax (VAT) instead of the customary 17.5 per cent. This reduced rate will take effect from August 1 and run until January 31, 2023.

“The Government has determined now that every Barbadian household should have the first 250 kilowatt-hours removed from a vat rate of 17.5 per cent to a new VAT rate of 7.5 per cent. This is going to represent on average a savings of about $17 to every Barbadian household, regardless if you use 250 kilowatts-hours or not,” she announced.

“This my friends, is critical and it might not be a lot but when you see it in conjunction with the other things that we are doing then you will understand,” Prime Minister Mottley insisted.

She revealed that according to reports from the BL&P, 63 per cent of Barbadian households use 250 kilowatts or less. The reduced VAT will result in the electricity bill moving from $204.46 to $167.06.

The Barbadian Prime Minister also shared that the reduced VAT will cost the Government $1.527 million per month, equating to approximately $10.5 million over the next six months.

Five-time Olympic champion and the fastest woman alive, Elaine Thompson-Herah, has signed with Global sports brand PUMA.

The 30-year-old Jamaican is set to boost the company’s roster of track and field athletes ahead of the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA.

She was last tied to the Nike brand, but that arrangement reportedly ended on a rocky note recently.

Thompson-Herah is the first woman in history to win the sprint double at consecutive Olympics, capturing gold in both the 100-metre and 200-metre at the 2016 Rio Olympics and again at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Aside from her historic Olympic achievements, she became the fastest woman alive when she ran 10.54 seconds at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, USA in 2021.

Reacting to the signing, PUMA CEO Bj?rn Gulden said: “We are thrilled that Elaine has chosen to join the PUMA family”.

“With her speed she embodies everything we stand for as a brand. Elaine ran the second fastest time in women’s history last year and is only 0.05 seconds off a world record. She really targets the 100-metre world record and we want to help her achieve that goal with our most innovative performance products.”

PUMA has a long history in track and field and has sponsored the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) since 2002. Thompson-Herah now joins her Jamaican compatriot, sprint superhero, world record holder and Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt.

“PUMA just felt like the right fit, a company that has been working with the world’s fastest man for decades,” said Thompson-Herah.

“I’m excited to be part of such an elite group and can’t wait to get started. I really want to break the 100-metre world record. The current one has been undefeated for 34 years. Now is the time. I think there’s still a lot I can unleash,” she added.

PUMA is one of the world’s leading sports brands, designing, developing, selling and marketing footwear, apparel and accessories. The company distributes its products in more than 120 countries, and is headquartered in Herzogenaurach, Germany.

Following the recovery of the body of Scott Bamburry, an employee of Kingston Wharves Limited who reportedly fell off a ship while working on Tuesday night, the company has sought to bring some clarity to the tragic development.

According to a statement from Kingston Wharves, at approximately 10:05 pm on Tuesday, July 12 while performing duties as a stevedore aboard a vessel that was docked at Berth 8, the employee fell overboard the vessel.

A search was subsequently launched, which ended with the recovery of Bamburry’s body on Thursday.

In the above video, Mark Williams, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kingston Wharves Limited, outlined from the company’s standpoint, what occurred on Tuesday night.

He also referred to the unusual and heart-warming circumstances in which Bamburry came to be in the employ of the company, where Bamburry was said to have proven to be an industrious worker for just over a year, and was recognised for his work at the company’s last staff awards.

Williams said while the development is now the subject of a police investigation, the company, from its own checks and examination of the applicable safety systems and records, is satisfied that no systemic issue contributed to the tragedy.

Saint Lucia Marine Police are searching for some men from Anse La Raye-Canaries reported missing at sea.

Marine Police Commander Kentry Frederick disclosed that the unit received a call concerning ‘two or three’ men from the area who were out fishing on Thursday and experienced mechanical failure.

During the Choice Television Programme ‘Police Insight’, he recalled that the Marine Police had advised people who encounter issues at sea that they do not need credit on their mobile telephones to make a distress call.

He said they could dial 999 or 911, and the call would be passed on to the unit.

“Unfortunately they called friends and the friends didn’t get them. But we got the call about 8 O’ clock tonight. So as we speak we have a vessel out there in search of the fishing vessel in distress and the persons on board,” Frederick told Police Insight.

He hoped Marine Police would be able to rescue the missing individuals during the night.

“What makes it a little more challenging is the weather condition because visibility with the rain coming down would be a bit poor,” Frederick stated.

But he said Marine Police officers had left aboard ‘The Protector’, a vessel designed to withstand such weather conditions.

“We are hoping that the family would just be comforted because we are out there searching for the missing persons,” Frederick stated.
