Young Jamaica, the youth arm of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), challenges the People’s National Party (PNP), and its president to offer the Jamaican people an alternative relief plan, “one which not only treats with Jamaica’s current economic situation but accounts for future financial stability”.

“Instead of the PNP’s irresponsible and impulsive proposals, the JLP Andrew Holness-led government has put forward a measured, targeted and thoughtful aid packages over the last two years…,” Young Jamaica said in a press release on Monday.

“The latest CARE components will provide a combined $2.7-billion social intervention package. Special focus was also given to the youth and elderly. Over half a billion dollars will be allocated to pensioners at the bottom of the income ladder.

“The GOJ will also be providing J$1.789 billion in back-to-school grants in addition to additional contributions to those on PATH,” the group noted.

According to Young Jamaica, the PNP continues to prove that it has “absolutely no idea how to govern the people of Jamaica responsibly and ethically”.

The group said that the PNP had “repeatedly” and “impulsively promoted irresponsible and fiscally unsound policies”.

Young Jamaica said it is “high time for [the PNP] to recognise that the politics they are attempting to play is a relic of a past” Jamaica does not want to return.

“This JLP administration has introduced transformational systematic electronic direct transfer of relief funds, aligned with international best practices, for the people of Jamaica.

“This has never been done before by any other administration,” the press release quoted Young Jamaica President Rohan Walsh.

Communications Director of Young Jamaica Rodain Richardson said: “The PNP would like for us to resile to the 1990s, 2010 and 2013, when Jamaicans were faced with economic pressures, uncertain times and when the country suffered catastrophic economic affairs.

“We have come too far as a people and have worked too hard as a country for anyone to trick us and tell us to run wid it, we cannot go back to a time like that.”

The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) is categorically refuting claims made by the United Progressive Party (UPP) that it has failed to publish the Voters’ Register for June, as is required by law. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATSAPP GROUP FOR NEWS UPDATES.

In response, the UPP is apologizing to the Commission for a statement it issued, asking that ABEC explain the delay in publication.

A Party official confirms that the June list has, indeed, been printed and published, and believes the mix-up took place because of a delay in acquiring digital copies of the list.

The Party had issued a press release, published on July 11, captioned “UPP demands explanation for ABEC’s late publication of June’s Voters’ List and calls for more voter education.”

In response, ABEC reports that the Register of Electors for June 2022 was published on June 26, 2022, and it was posted in the places required by the Representation of the People Act by June 27, 2022.

“Copies of the document can be seen at the High Court, Public Library, St. John’s Police Station, the (General) Post Office and other areas within the 17 constituencies, including each Registration Unit,” ABEC says.

In addition, the Commission says the Supplementary List – that is, the list of persons registered between June 1 and 30 – which is required to be published by the 15th of every month – has been published since July 8.

Asserting the children are watching, Chief Education Officer Dr. Fiona Philip-Mayer has called on adults to lead by example and be role models.

“We must be role models in our use of social media, in the comments, in the utterances that we make. Our children need us to teach them the values, to teach them the manners that we so want as part of our school community,” Philip-Mayer asserted in a statement on Tuesday to mark the summer break.

“So let us all as adults be responsible in what we do, in what we say, appreciating that we must lead by example,” the Senior Education Ministry official stated.

She said that parents are partners.

“You allow us to have your children. For that we are ever so grateful. We continue to work alongside you and ask you to be the partners that are going to support your child’s development and for those of you who have done this in a beautiful way we say thank you as well,” the Chief Education Officer said.

She also had a message for students, assuring them that they are not too young to appreciate their efforts on their behalf and express gratitude.

As many young people transition to secondary school, Philip Mayer encouraged them to make the best of it.

In addition, she highlighted the need to continue to read and learn during the break from school as they engage in self-care and activities that uplift them and bond with their families.

And Philip-Mayer expressed gratitude to education stakeholders who had contributed to a good academic year with unexpected turns and limitations, but one for which all they could be proud.
