Authorities are likely to launch an investigation into a situation whereby a man has been pretending to be a medical doctor, Health Advisor Dr Leslie Ramsammy has indicated.
The Guyana Cancer Foundation today made a post on its Facebook Page cautioning persons that Mikhail Tadius McLennan is pretending to be a doctor.
In the statement, the Foundation said there are no records showing he is registered at the Medical Council of Guyana.
According to the GCF’s President Bibi Hassan, McLennan had asked to work with the Foundation some time ago, and she took him on the job as a volunteer. She said after several people, including those from the media, reached out to her, she began investigating the man.
“Persons called to confirm that he is not a doctor. I questioned him about his Medical Degree and he refused to send a copy of it to us. He said he is working as a Medical Officer/Pharmacist at ROK Pharmacy and there is no such Pharmacy that exists,” the woman contended.
In light of her own findings, the Foundation cut all ties with the man. In fact, Hassan made it clear that McLennan is no longer affiliated with the Cancer Foundation.
Hassan also posted photos of the man’s alleged Curriculum Vitae (CV) which indicate that he attended Queen’s College, Texila American University, and the University of Guyana.
The man also claimed he worked at several institutions including the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital, the New Amsterdam Family Health Center, Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), and the ROK Pharmacy.
McLennan initially indicated to several media houses that he is a doctor.
But later in the day, McLennan issued a statement on his Facebook page, apologising and confirming that he is indeed not a medical doctor.
His statement reads: “First off let me start by apologizing to everyone that’s been affected by this. I acknowledge that I made a huge mistake and I would at least try to explain my side. I did start the University of Guyana in 2016 to pursue what was and still is my passion to become a Medical Doctor. My mom was my only means of support and when she got ill and could not support me any longer. I had no choice but to drop out.”
He added: “I did try everything else to make my dream a reality, some of which I’m not so proud of, but when it did not work out, I was too embarrassed to tell some of my closest friends and family of my situation. In my heart and many hearts, I am a doctor because that’s my passion so I did insert myself into circumstances which allowed me more knowledge in this field even if it was not in the classrooms. I know I went too far by calling myself or introducing myself as a doctor and for that, I sincerely apologize.”
INews understands that the actions committed by the man can be considered a criminal offence and that he could be charged accordingly.
When contacted for a comment on the situation, Dr Ramsammy noted that he has since advised the Chief Medical Officer to contact the Medical Council of Guyana on this matter. He explained that the Medical Council has the authority to call in the police to investigate the situation.
“If you don’t act, you will encourage this type of behaviour,” he noted.

TT’s Nicholas Paul. –
TRINIDAD and Tobago cyclist Nicholas Paul expressed satisfaction with his capture of men’s sprint and keirin gold at the Tissot International Cycling Union Track Nations Cup which climaxed at the Alcides Nieto Patino Velodrome in Cali, Colombia on Sunday.
Competing in his first major event since recovering from a fractured collar bone sustained ten weeks ago, Paul defied odds and powered to sprint gold on the final day, ahead of current Olympic, World and European sprint champion Harrie Lavreysen (Netherlands).
Paul defeated the decorated Dutchman in two straight rides. In both races, Paul made the first move to accelerate and used his brute strength and tactical awareness to come up trumps on both occasions.
One day prior, he boldly announced his return to the competitive circuit with a golden performance in the keirin finals.
After his meteoric sprint performance, Paul told Nations Cup media, “It was a hard week of racing. It means a lot to me to be able to come to Cali and win the keirin and sprints. It means a lot, I’m happy.”
At the first Nations Cup in Glasgow, Scotland in April, Paul suffered a broken collarbone after he lost control of his bike and crashed in the men’s sprint semi-final against Australian Matthew Richardson.
Paul’s crash in the second race, after he won the first, forced him to sit out the rest and settle for fourth place overall.
He was, however, pleased to have recovered from injury and be able to execute on the track once more.
In a post to Instagram on Tuesday, Paul wrote, “Cali, Colombia has brought a fantastic conclusion to my 2022 Nations Cup series. It feels great to be racing again and surely some encouraging results coming off an injury.
“God has been good to me. I give him thanks for a speedy recovery. It’s all a work in progress for which I am trusting the process.
“Special thanks to my coach Crag Mclean, the recovery team at World Cycling Center and all whom have been instrumental in this process. Thanks everyone for the love and support.”
Paul suits up in national colours once more at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK from July 28 to August 8.

Moraikobai Toshao, Derick John was on Monday elected to serve as Chairman of the National Toshaos Council (NTC).
The elections were held on the first of a five-day NTC conference being held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC), Liliendaal.
Two persons tied for the position of deputy chair, and this will be sorted later by the executive.
Karrau toshao, Shane Cornelius was elected NTC secretary, while Michael Thomas, Toshao of Aishalton was elected treasurer.
Addressing toshaos and senior councillors following the election, the new NTC chair assured the village leaders that they will be well represented.
“I can assure you that we will do the best of our ability, because that will be our main agenda, your concern, your rights, is our priority,” John said.
He emphasised that much work needs to be done, especially since the lifespan of the executive is less than two years.
“Therefore, there is a need for all of us to be prepared to take the agenda forward. We have a lot of work to do, and as we will be sitting for the next four days, we will hear concerns, problems, challenges, issues and therefore, we will have to be the driving force, working along with the government, trying to resolve most of these issues,” John said.
Noting that confidence was entrusted in the elected members, John asserted, “I believe that if we can work as a team, we can achieve, and we will be able to bring to realisation a change in the lives of our indigenous brothers and sisters right across this beautiful country of Guyana.”
The council is a semi-autonomous body comprising all toshaos in Guyana. The 20-member executive committee includes a chairman, vice chair, secretary and treasurer.
The executive body is installed every three years during the annual NTC Conference, after the regions elect their members to serve on the council.

The Ministry of Health on Tuesday received an additional 12, 000 doses of the US-made Pfizer vaccine for persons 18 years and older.
This is following a commitment made by the United States (US) Government to procure all COVID-19 vaccines for Guyana’s population.
Speaking during the hand-over ceremony, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony said the timely donation will significantly boost the ministry’s immunisation campaign.
He said the donation continues a series of endowments from the US which includes donation of personal protective equipment (PPE), delivery of five ultra-deep-freeze freezers to store the Pfizer vaccines, and tents for vaccination purposes.
Also, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has been establishing programmes, and workshops that seek to address vaccine hesitancy across Guyana.
“I think we can see this as a very strong commitment because when other countries are struggling still to have access to vaccines, we basically have all the vaccines that this country really would require,” Dr. Anthony noted.
The minister noted that an additional 50, 000 doses are expected to arrive in Guyana shortly. He is urging persons to get vaccinated with the primary doses, as well as boosted to battle the deadly virus.
“With the support of the US Government, we have been able to strengthen our programme, reach a lot of people, save a lot of lives, prevent hospitalisation, and I think that’s what this relationship is showing that once we work together, we’ll be able to prevent deaths and prevent diseases.”
Meanwhile, US Ambassador to Guyana, Her Excellency Sarah Ann-Lynch said the US Government stands committed to assisting the government and people of Guyana in the fight against COVID-19.
“We are just thrilled to be doing this here today. As you know, having the vaccine doesn’t mean getting vaccinated so we continue to encourage people to come out, get your shots, get your jabs, if you’ve already gotten your initial vaccinations, please get your boosters its very important,” she noted.
The ambassador further noted that the assistance from the US is facilitated through State Departments, USAID, Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Department of Defence.
Also attending the ceremony was Director of Primary Health Care, Dr. Ertensia Hamilton and a Representative of PAHO/WHO. [Extracted from DPI]

Preparation works are underway at the Guyana National Stadium, where the Ministry of Housing and Water will launch the much-anticipated Building Expo 2022 on July 22.
Already, approximately 320 exhibitors, both local and international, have registered to participate in the event. This will see local companies from the hardware industry, furniture business, construction, real estate, financial institutions, government agencies, Go-Invest and the hotel industry, among others participating.
Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal said the expo will be ‘family-friendly’ so that persons can have the opportunity to look at different types of housing and make collaborative decisions when choosing their homes.
“We want this to be a family atmosphere, this is not just for business persons. The real beneficiaries are our citizens, our residents, the people of Guyana, so we want the families to come out, and that’s why we are making it a family atmosphere, so that together when both parties come, it is important because it helps in planning,” the Minister said.
The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) is currently constructing model houses which will depict the ministry’s young professional houses, as well as the moderate and low-income units. Private companies will also showcase their model houses.
Minister Croal explained that, “there will be a demonstration of using recycled waste for the construction of houses. The demonstration is already here so they’ve cleared it and so that will start tomorrow.”
Also, a new technology for the construction of 3D houses will be showcased at the expo. The Minister said a demonstration will be done so that citizens could see first-hand how it works. He noted that 3D printing will be the future of construction in Guyana.
In addition, there will be a walk-through tunnel that will allow residents to see what the government has in store for Guyana.
“That is expected to excite you because when you walk through that tunnel you will be able to capture and captivate your mind of what the future of Guyana looks like,” Minister Croal pointed out.
Additionally, there will be a ‘One Guyana’ location, a Guyana walkway, food court, children’s playground, and an equipment zone that will showcase various construction equipment.
A seminar will be held at which topics will be presented and discussed. This will allow interactions in areas such as construction of houses, new technologies, and climate change.
Further, the CHPA will be allocating land to citizens, and conducting land titling distribution on the ground. [Extracted and Modified from DPI]
