T20 World Cup: England beat Pakistan to win pulsating final

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana

(BBC) England beat Pakistan by five wickets in a pulsating final in Melbourne to win the Men’s T20 World Cup and become double world champions.

Chasing 138 in front of a raucous Pakistan-supporting crowd, they fell to 45-3 and 84-4 amid electric fast bowling.

But, under intense pressure at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, Ben Stokes wrote himself further into the folklore of English cricket by finishing on 52 not out.

He was there at the end, as he was in the 2019 50-over World Cup final, as this current white-ball side provided another of English cricket’s greatest wins.

As the equation tightened, Stokes capitalised on a cruel injury to Pakistan left-armer Shaheen Afridi and took England to victory with six balls to spare.

The win, thanks in large part to a superb bowling performance from Sam Curran and Adil Rashid, means England become the first team to hold the men’s 20 and 50-over world titles.

It is also their second T20 world title following victory in the West Indies in 2010.

As Stokes pulled away after hitting the winning runs, he roared – his celebration reminiscent of his other iconic knock in the 2019 Ashes Test at Headingley.

He was soon mobbed by his team-mates before they ran to celebrate in front of the few England fans among this massive crowd of 80,462.

The pitch was tricky but England had looked strong favourites after their bowling performance restricted Pakistan to 137-8.

England, though, know finals are never easy. Their experience at Lord’s in 2019 showed that.

Pakistan have the best pace attack in the world and the crowd erupted as early wickets fell in the chase.

This is also a weekend in which England’s Red Roses lost a rugby union World Cup final and the men’s rugby league side were beaten in a World Cup semi-final.

But Stokes stayed calm throughout, even as the equation tightened to a situation where 41 runs were needed from 30 balls, to steer his side home with his first ever T20 international fifty.

His innings also banished memories of the 2016 T20 World Cup final, when he was crushed by Carlos Brathwaite’s four consecutive sixes in the final over as West Indies took the title.

After a shock defeat by Ireland and a washout against Australia in the group stage, England needed to win all their remaining games to lift the trophy, just as they did in the 2019 50-over World Cup.

Pakistan – and the crowd – sensed their moment when, with 54 needed from 45, Harry Brook sliced leg-spinner Shadab Khan straight to long-off.

But in taking the catch Shaheen, who had bowled Alex Hales in England’s first over, injured himself – a moment that proved crucial.

He returned to the field to bowl the 16th but after one delivery he limped off the field.

That left part-time spinner Iftikhar Ahmed to finish the over and Stokes took his chance, smacking a four through extra cover and a six over long-off to bring the game under England’s control.

Moeen Ali followed by hitting seamer Mohammad Wasim for three fours in the next over and the result was all but secure, even though Moeen was bowled in the 19th over.

Pakistan’s pace bowlers can take little blame. Haris Rauf had England captain Jos Buttler caught behind for 26 and Phil Salt taken at mid-wicket in a thrilling spell.

He and Naseem Shah, who somehow went wicketless in four sensational overs, did all they could to secure what would have been Pakistan’s second T20 title.

England were similarly impressive with the ball, albeit after a nervy start from Stokes, who began the match with a no-ball and then a wide.

Pakistan’s fearsome opening pair of captain Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan were surprisingly cagey early on and Rizwan was bowled in the fifth over by Curran for 15.

Leg-spinner Rashid then had the dangerous Muhammad Haris caught at long-on with his first ball and in his third over delivered a crucial blow.

Babar had steadily reached 32 but Rashid foxed him with a googly and took a fine low return catch. Rashid followed that with five dots to Iftikhar to complete a remarkable wicket-maiden in the heat of a World Cup final.

From there, Pakistan did not recover. They lost seven wickets for 53 runs in the last nine overs.

Curran was deservedly named player of the tournament for a series of stunning performances and once again his mix of slower yorkers and bouncers proved almost impossible to hit – he conceded just 12 runs off his four overs.

Shan Masood was Pakistan’s highest scorer with 38 from 32. He chipped Curran to deep square leg in the 17th over, which allowed Chris Jordan to help close out the innings.

Jordan, who retained his place after Mark Wood failed to recover from injury, added the wickets of Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz as only 18 runs came from the last four overs.

Two homeless after Berbice fire; arson suspected

Black Immigrant Daily News

Two persons are now homeless after a fire Saturday evening fire completely destroyed a house at Number Two Village, East Canje, Berbice.

At the time of the fire, no one was at home.

Government part-time worker, Kashia Reid and her cousin who occupy the wooden building, had reportedly left on Saturday morning to attend a birthday celebration at West Demerara.

Residents say fire was seen in the house at about 19:00h.

One neighbour who is also a cousin of both victims, Jermaine Lampkin, said he walked by the house and noticed nothing amiss but shortly after he reached home, he heard shouts of ‘fire’. He said, initially, he thought the fire was at Fort Ordinance.

The house on fire

“I just pass here and is not five minutes so I didn’t think that is her [house],” he said.

Neighbours say the building was completely destroyed within 8-10 minutes.

Reports are that when the fire was first seen, it was protruding from the ceiling and the entire building was quickly engulfed.

According to one neighbour, the door was opened and the padlock off when he went to the fire scene leaving many to believe that someone have gained access to the building and left shortly before the fire.

Reid reportedly claimed that two days prior, she received a phone call stating that there were plans being made to burn the building.

Divisional Fire officer Clive Mc Donald says that from initial investigations, it would appear that the fire was maliciously set.

The investigation is ongoing.

Former MOE exec says successful educators should lead portfolio Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Youth, Dr Maurice Smith, is making no apologies for his view that persons tasked with leading the ministry should be successful educators.

In fact, Smith, who is also the Registrar at the University of the West Indies (UWI), has expressed disbelief that persons who have not received formal training in education are directing policy for the sector.

“I believe that people who lead the Ministry of Education – (and are) within the Ministry of Education – should have been first successful classroom (teachers) and principals,” declared Smith as scores of persons clapped and shouted in agreement at Thursday’s Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) symposium.

“I make no apologies for that!” stressed the man who served as permanent secretary in the Education Ministry from November 2015 to October 2016.

In using the medical field as an example of where experts dictate the issues affecting their field, Smith said the same should be applied to the field of education.

He elaborated that, “I had to take my mother to the doctor a few months ago, and I had to check out the credentials of the doctor, because to deal with the issue – and thank God she is well – I didn’t need a neophyte or a novice looking over my mother.

“… And I don’t understand how everybody who is not in education can come to education and tell educators (what to do). I don’t understand it,” Smith remarked.

The former principal director of the National College for Educational Leadership (NCEL) said the country’s education system now demands leaders who understand the issues relative to it, instead of leaders aligned to political parties or organisations.

“… And I don’t understand how people who are not trained educators want to direct policy and practice…,” said Smith as he was interrupted by members of the audience, including teachers, who cheered and clapped loudly.

“I don’t understand it!” he repeated amid more cheers.

When the noise died down, the educator stated: “So, what Jamaica needs are not people who are connected to certain organisations, or connected to certain parties. That’s not what we need!

“We need people who understand the system,” he insisted.

While Smith did not call names, the current Minister of Education and Youth, Fayval Williams, is not an educator by profession, but rather, a chartered financial analyst and a former director of Kingston Properties Limited.

That is a clear example that in Jamaica’s political system, an individual’s professional career does not dictate the Cabinet portfolio they are assigned to.

The last educator to head the Education Ministry was Ruel Reid, who held that position from March 2016 to March 2019, when he resigned in the face of fraud allegations against him.

Reid was on secondment to the ministry from Jamaica College, where he was the principal up to November of last year, though he did not officially return to that substantial post at the school after his resignation from the Education Ministry and fraud charges being subsequently laid against him.

Karl Samuda, who took over from Reid and served as minister between March 2019 and September 2020, was not an educator by profession. He is a businessman and a farmer.

Ronald ‘Ronnie’ Thwaites, who severed as Minister of Education under the People’s National Party (PNP) Administration from January 2012 to February 2016, is an attorney-at-law, a religious leader and radio broadcaster by profession. However, he has reportedly held several positions in academia.

Andrew Holness, before becoming prime minister, served as Education Minister from 2007 to 2011. He, too, was never a school teacher or principal.

The PNP’s Maxine Henry-Wilson and Ambassador Burchell Whitman are two other educators who went on to serve as ministers of education.

Whiteman served between 1992 and 2002, while Henry-Wilson was head of the Education Ministry from 2002 to 2007, both in the Cabinets of then Prime Minister, PJ Patterson.
