More details behind man’s 49-yr sentence for killing lover, her 2 sons Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

A 56-year-old Manchester man who stabbed his lover and her two young sons to death in 2014, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after the court heard that he still maintains his innocence relative to having committed the brutal killings.

Also, the court was told on Friday that one of the two boys who were murdered was said to be the convict’s own son, although the child did not bear his surname.

Mark Henry was slapped with three life sentences by High Court Judge, Justice Lorna Shelly-Williams, when he appeared in the Home Circuit Court on Friday.

He was ordered to serve 49 years and six months in jail for each murder before being eligible for parole consideration.

The sentences are to run concurrently, meaning that Henry will serve a minimum of 49 years and six months in prison.

Henry, a resident of Spring Grove in Manchester, was convicted last month in the Manchester Circuit Court for the April 29, 2014 murders of 44-year-old Nadine Caridice and her sons, 11-year-old Rushane Ellis and 16-year-old Jovan Thomas.

The elder child is said to be Henry’s son, the court was told during Friday’s sentencing hearing which had been moved to the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston.

The bodies of the victims were found at their home in Ramble near Porus in Manchester, with stab wounds to their necks, and their throats all slashed.

It was reported at the time that the body of the younger son was found near the gateway of the yard, and his brother’s body was found a few feet away from the house.

The mother’s body was found with the throat slashed, as well as multiple other injuries to her body.

Multiple injuries were also seen on the body of her eldest son, along with his throat being slashed.

At his sentencing, it was heard that Henry and Carridice had been in a relationship.

Based on a probation report, the convict expressed no remorse for the killings, and maintained his innocence despite the conviction.

Gold production from underground mines to surge in coming years – Bharrat

Black Immigrant Daily News

Minster of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat

With the preparatory work currently ongoing on various underground mines in Guyana, Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat believes that over the next two to three years, gold production from these underground mines will surge.

In a recent interview with this publication, Minister Bharrat spoke about mining, specifically underground mining. He noted the various companies that have started underground gold exploration, such as Australian Troy Resources.

Additionally, Aurora Gold Mines, now owned by Chinese company Zijin Mining after it took over the formerly Canadian owned mine back in 2020, has also embarked on underground mining.

“The underground mining at AGM has already started, meaning the work has already started. There hasn’t been any production as yet from the underground operation, but the work has already started. I know that significant investment is being made by both companies, to ensure that they start the process,” Bharrat said.

“The foundation is being set for an increase in production. You know how the gold sector works. The investment is made now, but maybe next two, three years down the road you will see the returns from those investments and you will see a significant improvement or increase in production, especially from the underground production from those two large scale companies.”

Bharrat also noted that there are other large scale companies that have either expressed an interest in coming or have already started. The Minister also noted that notwithstanding a dip in gold production at the half year, Guyana can expect a resurgence in the coming future.

“We have other large-scale companies coming on board and showing interest. Barrick Gold is here doing exploration activities. Torparu mines is being converted into a mining company now. Omai, there are exploration once again at Omai.”

“There’s also a large deposit or discovery in the Cuyuni area. So, these are all large deposits that have the potential to be developed into large scale mining companies,” Minister Bharrat explained.

Barrick Gold Corporation is a Canadian company with operations around the world. It had been announced earlier this year that it would re-enter Guyana’s market and start exploration near the Karouni mining site in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).

Barrick Gold Corporation, in fact, partnered with Troy Resources last year. While Barrick’s partnership with Troy Resources is a new one, the company is actually no stranger to Guyana. Back in 2018, Barrick withdrew from Guyana after spending US$7.1 million on the Arakaka gold project, where it was in a joint venture with Alicanto Minerals.

And when Alicanto found gold in Arakaka in 2020, it had attributed previous exploration work done by Newmont and Barrick Gold Corp that provided them with the necessary data inclusive of geochemistry, geophysics, and camp infrastructure, for making the find.

According to Alicanto, this all provided them with an excellent platform for discovering the gold.

Canadian company Gran Colombia Gold Corp, which is operating in Guyana, is meanwhile partnering with another recent entry into Guyana’s market, ETK Incorporated, for work on the Toroparu mine. Already, Gran Columbia has found gold in its Toroparu project in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) that may even present opportunities for underground mining.

Last year, Gran Colombia had announced that it completed its two-phase diamond drill programme, with 114 drill holes. According to the company, the drilling programme confirmed the presence of deposits that could be mined through underground mining.

Decked out in tropical attire, patrons converged on the Frank Collymore Hall for the opening night of the Barbados Jazz Excursion and Golf weekend.

Though rain had caused the four-part concert series to be shifted from the Hilton Hotel, nothing could dim the spirits of those familiar with the exceptional entertainment package synonymous with the brand.

The event is hosted to raise funds for the Headstart Music Program and attendees could participate in a silent auction or the raffle for attractive prizes including staycations.

A true Taste of Barbados was provided by a full lineup of Barbadian artistes. Students of the Headstart Music Program got the evening started. Though understandably it was hard to keep the nerves at bay, the audience members rallied them on with their support.

The talented cast included The Three Pans, featuring Hashim Durant, Judah Goddard, and Mark Forde. They whet the appetites of the music-hungry patrons with a diverse range of music selections. Durant even showed his sentimental side when he serenaded his girlfriend with the classic Can’t Help Falling in Love. The trio was fantastic and the amalgamation of their skills in the impromptu jam session was highly entertaining.

Excellent musicianship was on further display when GP Horns hit the stage. They kept the energy level high and their playful banter at intervals gave an intimate feel to their eclectic set.

For his introduction, Trotman gave visitors to the island a front-row seat to the essence of Crop Over creating a Kadooment Day-like spectacle that included costumed dancers, shaggy bears and stiltmen. He regaled patrons with some of his chart-topping hits including Island Gal along with some material from his latest album. He even showed his vocal ability with a Bob Marley selection in a sing-along session with attendees.

The afterparty continued with deejay music in the foyer after the concert closed.

Councillor labels municipal authority as ‘spectator’ amid bad roads Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

People’s National Party (PNP) Councillor for the White Horses Division in the St Thomas Municipal Corporation, Hubert Williams, has upbraided his fellow councillors from both sides of the political aisle for remaining silent about what he described as the dreaded road conditions in the parish.

“We can’t sit down as the local authority and watch this (the bad state of the roads) keep on going on.

“… And if we just sit and be spectators, the people dem nuh need fi vote back fi none a we fi return here!” thundered an impassioned Williams at Thursday’s monthly municipal meeting.

On September 5 and September 6, taxi and bus operators, as well as residents, mounted roadblocks to protest the poor state of some roads in the parish that are affecting students and other commuters traveling to and from areas like Bath, Lyssons, Port Morant, Dalvey, Leith Hall, among other communities in the parish.

The transport operators and residents of the parish have and still blame delays on the ongoing work under the Southern Coastal Highway Improvement Project (SCHIP). They said with the project, many roads were dug up and have yet to be paved.

Though the protests have largely stopped, the poor state of the parish’s roads remain, hampering commerce in the parish and leaving residents fuming about the slow pace of travelling throughout the parish or travelling to Kingston, according to an irate Williams.

In highlighting the roadway from Botany Bay to Morant Bay as an example, Williams described it as being “sick” like other roadways in the parish.

“It is sick, and (the municipal) council need to play a greater role in ensuring that the lives and the well-being of the people of the parish are maintained at a level,” the councillor contended.

“I’m coming this morning (Thursday) and there are going to be two trucks and they going to want to load one time.

“Now, we know the road bad already, but at least there has to be some management in terms of what going on the road,” he suggested.

According to Williams, the road situation in West St Thomas, where the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) James Robertson is the Member of Parliament (MP), is just “as bad as over east (St Thomas)”.

He is imploring Robertson to urgently intervene on behalf of residents, as the road situation is also affecting the parish’s economy.

“I am saying the MP needs to manage – get on top of what is going on over west. It is destroying business, (and) commerce is really at the lowest in the parish,” he claimed.

“If you have to go and pick up something in Kingston, it take you the entire day. You can’t come back and do nothing at all. Nothing at all!

“If you lef yuh yard and guh pick up something in the parish capital, it takes you two hours to go and two hours to come. Half of the day done!” asserted Williams.

Oneofakind to romp ‘Big Sub’ Memorial at Caymanas Park Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Champion trainer Anthony Nunes’ ONEOFAKIND’s second-place run behind imported RUNAWAY ALGO at seven and a half furlongs, reporting off a six-month lay-up three weeks ago, proved the miler is in great shape and should have no equal in Sunday’s Errol ‘Big Sub’ Memorial at his favourite trip.

RUNAWAY ALGO stepped up to open allowance two weeks later and was only beaten by CALCULUS at nine furlongs and 25 yards in the Mark My Word Trophy.

ONEOFAKIND lost his first two showdowns with CALCULUS earlier this year before turning the tables at seven and a half furlongs, confirming his status as a worthy grade-one campaigner.

Nunes started the Heroes holiday weekend $6 million in stakes arrears behind Jason DaCosta, who saddled four winners last week Saturday. Nunes, who had reduced DaCosta’s lead to $3 million, appears to be banking on getting ONEOFAKIND into prime shape ahead of the December 3 Mouttet Mile worth $18.75 million.

Whereas DaCosta has speedsters MAKEUPARTIST and SHE’S MY DESTINY in his barn, he lacks stayers of ONEOFAKIND’s calibre in the Mouttet Mile against the likes of CALCULUS, RUNAWAY ALGO, and Ian Parsard’s trio of MAHOGANY, JORDON REIN’S and SHE’S A WONDER.

ONEOFAKIND, who clocked 1:38.0 at a mile last December, should easily tick off his second win of the season after looking sharp at exercise, galloping six furlongs in 1:13.2 last Sunday morning.

The Errol ‘Big Sub’ Memorial closes the nine-race card, which runs off at noon.

Urgent – Immediate Broadcast Requested Heat Advisory

…Excessive Heat Advisory in Effect for Antigua and Barbuda 10 am to 3:30 pm Until Tuesday…

Heat Index or Feels-Like Temperature: Up to 41 °C or 106 °F

Location: Antigua and Barbuda

Timing: 10 am to 3:30 pm until Tuesday.

Synopsis: The combination of relatively high temperatures, high humidity and light winds will result in hot conditions.

The threat of health problems is moderate, for mainly sensitive people. An excessive heat advisory is issued within 12 hours of the onset of hot conditions.

The threshold for this advisory is when the maximum heat index temperature is expected to be in the range of 38 to 41 °C or 100 to 106 °F, for any length of time, for two or more consecutive days, with the winds 16 km/h (10 mph) or less.

Sensitive groups: While extreme heat can put everyone at risk for heat illnesses, health risks are greatest for the elderly, young children, people with chronic illnesses such as breathing difficulties, heart conditions or psychiatric illnesses, people who work or who exercise in the heat, homeless people and low-income earners.

Potential health implications: Heat illnesses, including heat: rash, edema, syncope/fainting, cramps, exhaustion and stroke.

Heat illnesses can lead to long-term health problems and heat stroke can lead to death.

Caution: If any symptoms of health illness are present (such as dizziness or fainting, nausea or vomiting, headache, rapid breathing and heartbeat, or extreme thirst) immediately move to a cool place and drink liquids; water is best.

The most dangerous heat illness is heat stroke, with symptoms that include complete or partial loss of consciousness or confusion and high body temperature. If caring for someone with those symptoms, call 911 immediately.

While waiting for help, cool the person right away by moving them to a cool place, applying cold water to large areas of the skin or clothing and fanning the person as much as possible.

Everyone should stay alert and take precautions – stay cool and hydrated. Check on vulnerable family members, friends and neighbours.

Those who take medication or have a health condition should ask their doctor if it increases their health risk in the heat and follow their recommendation.
