Oneofakind to romp ‘Big Sub’ Memorial at Caymanas Park Loop Jamaica

Champion trainer Anthony Nunes’ ONEOFAKIND’s second-place run behind imported RUNAWAY ALGO at seven and a half furlongs, reporting off a six-month lay-up three weeks ago, proved the miler is in great shape and should have no equal in Sunday’s Errol ‘Big Sub’ Memorial at his favourite trip.

RUNAWAY ALGO stepped up to open allowance two weeks later and was only beaten by CALCULUS at nine furlongs and 25 yards in the Mark My Word Trophy.

ONEOFAKIND lost his first two showdowns with CALCULUS earlier this year before turning the tables at seven and a half furlongs, confirming his status as a worthy grade-one campaigner.

Nunes started the Heroes holiday weekend $6 million in stakes arrears behind Jason DaCosta, who saddled four winners last week Saturday. Nunes, who had reduced DaCosta’s lead to $3 million, appears to be banking on getting ONEOFAKIND into prime shape ahead of the December 3 Mouttet Mile worth $18.75 million.

Whereas DaCosta has speedsters MAKEUPARTIST and SHE’S MY DESTINY in his barn, he lacks stayers of ONEOFAKIND’s calibre in the Mouttet Mile against the likes of CALCULUS, RUNAWAY ALGO, and Ian Parsard’s trio of MAHOGANY, JORDON REIN’S and SHE’S A WONDER.

ONEOFAKIND, who clocked 1:38.0 at a mile last December, should easily tick off his second win of the season after looking sharp at exercise, galloping six furlongs in 1:13.2 last Sunday morning.

The Errol ‘Big Sub’ Memorial closes the nine-race card, which runs off at noon.

Black Immigrant Daily News

Urgent – Immediate Broadcast Requested Heat Advisory

…Excessive Heat Advisory in Effect for Antigua and Barbuda 10 am to 3:30 pm Until Tuesday…

Heat Index or Feels-Like Temperature: Up to 41 °C or 106 °F

Location: Antigua and Barbuda

Timing: 10 am to 3:30 pm until Tuesday.

Synopsis: The combination of relatively high temperatures, high humidity and light winds will result in hot conditions.

The threat of health problems is moderate, for mainly sensitive people. An excessive heat advisory is issued within 12 hours of the onset of hot conditions.

The threshold for this advisory is when the maximum heat index temperature is expected to be in the range of 38 to 41 °C or 100 to 106 °F, for any length of time, for two or more consecutive days, with the winds 16 km/h (10 mph) or less.

Sensitive groups: While extreme heat can put everyone at risk for heat illnesses, health risks are greatest for the elderly, young children, people with chronic illnesses such as breathing difficulties, heart conditions or psychiatric illnesses, people who work or who exercise in the heat, homeless people and low-income earners.

Potential health implications: Heat illnesses, including heat: rash, edema, syncope/fainting, cramps, exhaustion and stroke.

Heat illnesses can lead to long-term health problems and heat stroke can lead to death.

Caution: If any symptoms of health illness are present (such as dizziness or fainting, nausea or vomiting, headache, rapid breathing and heartbeat, or extreme thirst) immediately move to a cool place and drink liquids; water is best.

The most dangerous heat illness is heat stroke, with symptoms that include complete or partial loss of consciousness or confusion and high body temperature. If caring for someone with those symptoms, call 911 immediately.

While waiting for help, cool the person right away by moving them to a cool place, applying cold water to large areas of the skin or clothing and fanning the person as much as possible.

Everyone should stay alert and take precautions – stay cool and hydrated. Check on vulnerable family members, friends and neighbours.

Those who take medication or have a health condition should ask their doctor if it increases their health risk in the heat and follow their recommendation.

Wilson overwhelms seniors at VEXX Tournament Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

Teenager Louis Wilson upstaged more seasoned opponents to convincingly win the Barbados Chess Federation’s (BCF) VEXX Tournament.

The 17-year-old Wilson overcame the challenge of senior Barbados representatives Justin Parsons and Emar Edwards to comfortably take top spot when the five-day event ended on Wednesday night at the Coles Building on Bay Street, Bridgetown.

Wilson, the older brother of reigning ladies national champion, Hannah Wilson, finished with six and a half out of a maximum seven points, ending a point and half more than both Parsons and Edwards, who were part of Barbados’ team at the 44th FIDE Olympiad in Chennai, India in August.

A former national Under-16 champion, Wilson, who was seeded at No. 4, emerged as the favourite to win the event after defeating second seeded Parsons on Sunday night and third seeded Edwards the following night. He duly took the top prize after beating veterans Othneil Harewood and Cyprian La Touche in the final two rounds.

Wilson’s quest for a 100 per cent winning record was denied when he had to settle for a draw in the third round against top seed, England-born Chris White, one of four new players entered in the tournament.

Both Parsons and Edwards finished with five points but Parsons took second place on account of winning the head to head clash in the third round.

Twelve-year-old Chanon Reifer-Belle, who won gold medals in the online rapid and blitz events at the Pan American Youth Championships earlier this year, placed fourth with four and a half points. Among her victories was an upset win against Parsons in the last round.

Harewood took fifth place on the tie-break ahead of La Touche and Alex Sargeant after all three players ended on four points.

The tournament, which was not open to players who finished in the top three spots at the National Championship and Ladies National Championship in April, attracted 16 players. Among the newcomers to BCF competitions was president of the Barbados Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, Dr Alfred Sparman.

Shane Aguila Cienfuegos Cortes posted a series of stories on an Instagram account yesterday confirming that Cienfuegos has become the first person in Chile to receive a national identification card as a non-binary person.

For those who are unfamiliar with the term “non-binary,” various sources indicate that the reference means that a person “does not fit into the traditional binary categories of male and female.”

Explaining more on the subject, Lee Phillips, psychotherapist and certified sex and couples counsellor, said on Oprahdaily.com that: “Gender identity is an identifier someone uses to communicate how they understand their personal gender, navigate within or outside our societal gender systems, and/or desire to be perceived by others. Non-binary means existing or identifying outside the sex/gender binary, neither man nor woman, or being partially or a combination of these things.”

So, rather than meaning identified as a male or female, an “X” will appear under the gender section of Cienfuegos’ identification. As such, Cienfuegos is now free to enjoy a life without those labels.

President Dr Irfaan Ali said that the aspirations of the people must be embodied in the innovative direction of the Government.

He said that when this “dynamic blend” is achieved, then the transformational objectives of the country can be realised.

During the feature address at the opening of the Berbice Expo and Trade Fair 2022 on Friday evening at the Albion Sports Complex, the President outlined a number of initiatives on the cards for the region to further catalyse growth and development.

These included the consideration of a new, more modern bridge across the Berbice River and the creation of a stadium at Palmyra.

President Dr Irfaan Ali

President Ali said that his administration is moving ahead with establishing an oil refinery in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) and will soon be inviting potential investors to submit their proposals for the construction of the 30,000-barrel facility.

The Government, he reiterated, is working on a series of initiatives at the national level that will lead to the transition and the transformation of the country and its economy.

2030 AND BEYOND

“We are putting the investments in the infrastructure, the human resources, the institutional capacity and the building out of the right adaptable technology that will situate our economy on a platform to perform in a world 2030 and beyond.”

President Ali assured that the structure, dynamism and diversity of the economy that his administration is building will be “so integrated and multi-dimensional, that we will be able to compete among the best economies in the world in every area of structural development that we are pursuing”.

He stated that while his Government is pursuing long-term initiatives, they will focus on building programmes that will deliver short-term results as the country transitions to perennial economic growth and prosperity.

PILLARS OF DEVELOPMENT

Dr Ali listed several pillars upon which the country’s transformation will be built, including healthcare and education systems to satisfy the locals and attract Guyanese in the diaspora, an improved ICT sector and by positioning Guyana to become a global leader in food security and energy development.

“We are not pursuing a one-sided growth approach, but a multi-dimensional approach.”

He added that his administration is also seeking to position Guyana as a leader in environmental and biodiversity services.

“When we speak about the future, we cannot speak about the future without understanding that environmental services and biodiversity system, ecological services will be an important part of the modern economy in the world 2030 and beyond.”

He assured that amidst all of this, Region Six and Five are well positioned to be the centrepiece for growth and development.

The goal, he continued, is to work together to bring prosperity to every single home, to bring development to every household to advance and uplift the lives of every single citizen.

“It is not only about love, but loving each other. It is linked to the development of our country. It is linked to the aspirations of our people. It is linked to the development trajectory and the transformation that we are going after—bringing a new wave of development and a new wave of prosperity.”

President Ali emphasised that this requires every single stakeholder to shoulder the responsibility of transforming Guyana into a leading economy.

CARICOM Security Ministers Concerned About Illegal Gun Trafficking – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

Caribbean Community (CARICOM) National Security Ministers have expressed concern over illegal gun trafficking at the 24th Meeting of the CARICOM Council for National Security and Law Enforcement (CONSLE).

The Ministers, Police Chiefs, and other security officials met on October 6 in Jamaica.

According to a CARICOM release, after the Meeting, Jamaica’s Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Horace Chang, disclosed that delegates focused heavily on firearms trafficking.

He observed that gun trafficking was “maybe the greatest threat risk to the Caribbean countries,” where firearms are widely used in homicides, the release said.

It also said Chang, responsible for National Security, had earlier observed that countries in the region do not manufacture firearms.

However, he observed that the ill effects of the proliferation of guns and the contribution to gang violence and transnational criminal activities in the region permeate individual territories and are responsible for more than 70% of homicides in CARICOM.

“It’s a Caribbean problem and we need to get on top of that issue,” Chang said.

The CONSLE Chair said that regional cooperation is integral to establishing the requisite infrastructure needed to deal with firearms trafficking and the associated criminality, such as drug trafficking and, almost simultaneously, expanding cybercrime activity.
