Madininair, l’agence de la qualité de l’air a déclenché ce mercredi 12 octobre une procédure d’alerte dans le cadre d’un épisode de pollution atmosphérique.

La qualité de l’air est très dégradée ce mercredi. L’onde tropicale s’évacue en mer des Caraïbes et laisse place à une brume de sable qui se révèle être plus intense que prévu, indique l’agence Madininair, qui mesure la qualité de l’air.

Les concentrations élevées en particules fines PM10 se traduisent par un risque important de dépasser le deuxième seuil sanitaire de 80µg/m3.

Aussi, ce mercredi, Madininair déclenche la procédure d’alerte spécifique aux épisodes de pollution aux particules fines PM10.

Mesures sanitaires 

Il est recommandé aux populations vulnérables (femmes enceintes, nourrissons et jeunes enfants, personnes de plus de 65 ans, personnes souffrant de pathologies cardiovasculaires, insuffisants cardiaques ou respiratoires, personnes asthmatique) ou sensibles (personnes se reconnaissant comme sensibles lors des pics de pollution et/ou dont les symptômes apparaissent ou sont amplifiés lors des pics) d’éviter les déplacements sur les grands axes routiers, les activités physiques et sportives intenses en plein air et à l’intérieur et de consulter en cas de gêne respiratoire.

Mind-blowing World Record

An amazing teenager dubbed the ‘World’s Most Flexible Girl’ has set a new record for a mind-blowing contortion.

Liberty Barros, 14, completed the world record for the highest number of reps of a back bend known as the ‘Liberty Low Down’ and named after her.

It is believed to be the most difficult back bend in the world.

The Guinness World Record team created the challenge for Liberty which saw her folding backwards from a squat position to get her ribs to touch the ground.

In 30 seconds, she completed 11 and a half repetitions of the incredibly difficult movement.

Dad Raam Barros said: “Liberty is her name and she’s always been about freedom and wanted the freedom to express her movement. We looked at the world records and thought these are pretty easy — her industry is flexibility and she wants to promote real flexible records. This world record is really about saying ‘this is the move that’s hardest’.”

Liberty first discovered she had a talent for extreme flexibility five years ago when she attempted to replicate a dance move from the music video to the Rhianna song ‘Umbrella’.

She managed to bend all the way back unaided, and since then has taught herself how to improve her unique talent.

She tried both gymnastic and circus skills, but Raam said neither suited her and he wanted to make sure she was free to use the incredible skill without constraints. Liberty has appeared on Spain’s Got Talent, Britain’s Got Talent, and runs a popular YouTube channel.

She completed the world record attempt at her home gym, Spiral Gymnastics Club Bretton, Peterborough on Wednesday, October 5.

Micro-finance company ISP Finance Services Limited (ISP) is seeking to raise $570 million by issuing a fixed and variable rate senior secured investment bond to investors. The move is to strengthen the company’s ability to “make a move on a few initiatives that will help with growth over the next 18 months,” CFO and company secretary Diyal Fernando said. “Coming out of COVID-19, though it didn’t really hold us back, it was a period where we had to more consolidate than plan for growth. But now [with] the situation as it is in the economy, we see significant opportunities to again resume our growth paths,” Fernando said. The move is also to provide capital to refinance debt and to expand its loan book, the company said in a press release on Tuesday. The offer, which began on September 28, will be distributed to accredited and minimum purchase investors as an exempt distribution in accordance with the Financial Services Commission’s (FSC) rules. The interest rate is fixed at 11.50 per cent per annum for the first year with a variable rate of six months weighted average treasury bill plus a spread of 3.50 per cent. There is also an interest rate floor of 11 per cent throughout the life of the bond. The lead broker and arranger, Sterling Asset Management, defines the minimum investment as $10 million according to the indicative term sheet. ISP was listed on the Junior Market of the Jamaica Stock Exchange in March 2016 and now has authorized shares of 105,000,000. As of June 30, 2022, the company’s net loan portfolio stood at J$681,296,099 in value. The short-term lending firm provides loans for education, home improvements, debt consolidation, payday advances, auto insurance or repairs as well as to small businesses. Managing Director and CEO Dennis Smith said ISP’s goal is to “become a major player in the microfinance sector, serving the needs of small business enterprises while being the market leader for unsecured loans to public and private sector employees.” The company is a member of the Jamaica Association of Micro Financing (JAMFIN).

Crescent District women benefit from craft training Loop Jamaica

Twenty women from Crescent District in Spanish Town, St Catherine have benefitted from a training programme designed to promote alternative livelihoods and the sustainable utilization of forest resources.

The women were trained in the production of bamboo and straw items earmarked for the tourism and craft industries.

Dubbed, the Crescent Women Group, the initiative sought to enhance the economic and social development of the women by engaging them in meaningful work as well as replacing activities such as coal burning.

The programme is an initiative of the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ), in collaboration with the Forestry Department with funding provided by the European Union (EU) and is aimed at assisting vulnerable women within Crescent District, a part of the Angels community which forms part of the Spanish Town Development Area, where unemployment is a major issue among women.

Speaking on the impact of the project, Norda Dawkins-Lyons, field supervisor from the Social Development Commission who had oversight for the group said the project has positively changed both the group and the wider community.

“The greatest impact of the project has been its ability to lift the morale of the community. As we know, this community is in the Spanish Town Development area which is heavily stigmatized and known for high crime and violence and other illicit activities. So, the introduction of this project provided members within the community an opportunity to do meaningful work rather than be idle or engage in illicit activities,” she said.

Member of the group, Yvonne Elliston says she is grateful for the opportunity to learn a skill.

“This project showed me the importance of bamboo and the many possibilities that surround it, especially in the tourism sector. We saw the rise in demand for bamboo furniture and products so we wanted to create income from it,” she added.

The EU grant allowed the women to procure important equipment such as a stove and pots for boiling the straw, which is part of the preparation process, sewing machines for product decorations and hand tools such as drills, a compressor, hole saws and sanders for making and finishing of bamboo craft items.

The women were able to use the tools to make bamboo products such as cups, bowls, lanterns, flower pots and jewellery while the straw was used to create hats, handbags, purses and mats, among other things.

Other organizations the Forestry Department, the Bureau of Standards, and the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCO), also lent support to the programme.

7 new COVID-19 cases in Antigua and Barbuda

The most recent report received by the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment revealed seven (7) new COVID-19 cases in Antigua and Barbuda as of October 7, 2022 at 6pm.

One (1) case was recorded on September 30th, three (3) on October 3rd, and one (1) on October 4th, 5th and 6th.

Thirty-one (31) recovered cases were recorded.

Consequently, the total number of persons with laboratory confirmed COVID-19 cases in Antigua and Barbuda is nine thousand one hundred and six (9,106); which is inclusive of six (6) active cases.

There are no hospitalized cases.

The dashboard has been updated to reflect these changes.

Customs & Excise Division issues Fraud Alert

The Antigua and Barbuda Customs and Excise Division wishes to advise members of the public that it has received reports that persons under the guise of Customs Officers may be approaching unsuspecting members of the business community in an attempt to scam them out of sums of money.

The Division views this matter extremely serious and is fully cooperating with the authorities to ensure that the fraudulent and unscrupulous actions of certain members of the community is brought to a stop as soon as possible.

Should any member of the public receive a phone call from anyone purporting to be a member of the Antigua and Barbuda Customs and Excise Division and is in the least bit unsure about their claim, please do not hesitate to contact the Division on 268-462-0028 for verification.

If you believe that you have been targeted or fallen victim to any scheme, you are also asked to immediately contact the Criminal Investigations Department of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda to make a report.

The Antigua and Barbuda Customs and Excise Division wishes to remind the public it is an offence to impersonate an officer and any such act carries a fine of $100,000 and/or imprisonment for not less than 2 years.

The Customs and Excise Division is resolved to operate at the highest levels of professionalism and integrity as it remains steadfast in its overall mission to secure and serve, collect revenue, and protect our borders.

In an email to members, the Antigua and Barbuda Chamber of Commerce has distanced itself from Antigua Airways.

The email reads as follows:

I recently found the attached flyer in a social media group with which I am a part and am at pains to state the following:

Whereas at no time or by any means has any known or unknown member or representative of Antigua Airways been in contact with this office or to the best of my knowledge any of our officers or directors.

Whereas on no occasion has any member of this office met with or sought to meet or entertained any known or unknown member or representative of Antigua Airways.

Whereas in no instance has there been any exchange of documentation whether it be electronic or otherwise with any known or unknown member or representative of Antigua Airways.

Whereas there have never been any agreements written, verbal or otherwise between any known or unknown member or representative of Antigua Airways and the Antigua and Barbuda Chamber of Commerce for any undertaking.

Whereas other than items in the printed or electronic news sources or other media, we have no knowledge of Antigua Airways or any of their representatives known or otherwise.

Body in sheet found in Port of Spain

POLICE are trying to identify the body of a man who was found wrapped in a sheet on Duncan Street, Port of Spain early on Wednesday morning.

Police said the Port of Spain Task Force received a report of gunshots on Duncan Street at around 12.10 am.

Officers went to the scene and found the body wrapped in a bloody sheet.

The man was of African descent, slim built, about six foot tall, dark brown in complexion and had a beard and moustache. He was wearing multicoloured Hawaiian pants.

Investigators found eight spent shells and one live round of ammunition.

A district medical officer later ordered the body removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James.

The Homicide Bureau of Investigations (Region I) are continuing enquiries.

Project launched to ensure pesticide vendors are trained & certified before operating

The Ministry of Agriculture’s Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Control Board (PTCCB) has recently launched its Pesticide Vendors Education and Certification Programme in order to satisfy the needs of the pesticide industry to complement their role in sound management of chemicals. The PTCCB Pesticides Vendors Education Programme, implemented in 2015 ensures all new pesticide vendors are trained and certified before commencing operations in Guyana. However, employees attached to pesticide vending sites are also required to be trained and certified.

The term “pesticide vendor” is synonymous with businesses that sell pesticides. More and more the role of industry in chemicals management is increasing. Similarly, businesses that sell pesticides to the general public have numerous opportunities to promote the safe use of pesticides, and also have a responsibility to provide competent advice to customers.

The initiative ensures that all staff working in these establishment possess the requisite knowledge for safe use, handling, transport, storage and disposal of pesticides. Additionally, pesticide vendors also provide guidance to pesticide users, mainly farmers on products, use, dose rates, application practices and storage.

The control of pesticides and their use is essential for the protection of people and the environment, since these substances are poisonous in nature and pose severe risk to both human health and the environment. Sound chemicals management aims to alleviate the dangers associated with pesticides, ensuring food safety and protecting the lives of consumers and pesticides users.

Twenty-eight participants from pesticides vendors in Regions 4 and 10 were trained and certified in the first session conducted on Tuesday 11th October, 2022.  These sessions are expected to continue during the month, targeting all pesticide vendors countrywide. There are 204 licensed pesticide vendors countrywide.

Pesticide vendors and their employees who fail to access the current education and certification exercise will have to undertake the Pesticides Vendors Education Programme for future licensing of their businesses.

Pierre Warns Against Using Barrel Concessions For Illegality – St. Lucia Times News

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre warned against using concessions on importing barrels to promote illegal activities.

” his is because of selfishness, Mr. Speaker, and if that continues, we may affect the majority of people because of a few selfish people who want to get their pockets lined by not following the law and doing what is right,” Pierre asserted.

Pierre, responsible for National Security, was speaking on a motion exempting imports of personal items, food, clothing, toys, and other household consumables in barrels from Value Added Tax.

The Castries East MP recalled that on several occasions, barrels contained items that were not food, care packages, or toys.

“This is spoiling the reputation of the country,” he told parliament.

He explained that the government is bringing further relief to people through barrel concessions.

The VAT exemption will run from November 1, 2022, to February 28, 2023.

In addition, the motion will exempt imports of toys, food supplies, and care packages by a member of the House of Assembly to benefit children, the vulnerable, and needy persons in their constituencies.

That provision will be in place from November 1, 2022, to January 31, 2023.
