“Nous nous sentons un peu oubliés”: en…

Black Immigrant Daily News

A 60-year-old businessman who is accused of being involved in a drug trafficking network operating between Jamaica and the United States, has purportedly indicated that he will not be challenging a request for him to be extradited to the United States.

Hugh Fraser did not appear in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court when the matter was mentioned on Friday, but a prosecutor told the presiding judge that the accused man intends to waive his right to an extradition hearing.

This would pave the way for him to face prosecution in the United States.

Fraser was not brought to court due to another matter relative to him in St James, where he was initially arrested in a targeted anti-narcotics operation by police-military teams.

The judge set the matter for mention on October 13.

Fraser, who was arrested in Montego Bay, is wanted for attempting to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine.

According to reports, between January and December of 2021, American investigators came to the conclusion that he was part of a drug-trafficking network that supplied large amounts of cocaine to people in Pennsylvania in the United States.

The US Drug Enforcement Administration and US Marshals Service assisted local law enforcement agencies, including the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA), in apprehending Fraser.

WATCH: Trailer, bus crash sparks big online debate; who was wrong? Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

A two-vehicle crash late last week reportedly Spanish Town Road in St Andrew, which involved a trailer truck and a Toyota Coaster coaster bus with passengers, has left persons stunned and questioning who was to be blamed for the collision.

Thursday’s traffic mishap appeared to leave several persons with at least minor injuries, but it is unclear whether there were hospitalisations or any fatalities.

CCTV footage that was obtained by Loop News of the crash showed several cars travelling along a wet thoroughfare.

At the same time, a pick-up truck is seen leaving what appeared to be the parking lot of a popular business establishment.

Further on in the video, the green Toyota Coaster bus can be seen travelling on the roadway while the trailer truck slowly makes it way across the roadway towards the entrance of the parking lot to the business establishment.

Instead of slowing down, the Coaster bus slammed into the side of the trailer truck as it (the trailer) entered the gateway to the business establishment.

Another video that appeared to have been recorded shortly after the collision, showed several persons exiting the Coaster bus. It is not known whether it was a licensed public passenger vehicle (PPV).

Some passengers appeared to be limping, while others assisted fellow occupants to exit the bus.

The question on some viewers’ minds was who was at fault for causing the motor vehicle collision.

“The Coaster (bus) had enough time to stop,” said Instagram user, mick_876.

“Di bus driver drop a sleep or summn. Smh!,” said bornlucky22, another Instagram user.

Lavoye_da_truth commented: “Di (bus) driver did haffi a sleep cause…”

In response to her views, farmer_777777 stated: “@lavoye_da_truth nope. The road wet n (and) maybe the truck man should wait. D truck wrong.”

Sek_876, in turn, responded to his views by sharing, “The truck start turn off (when) the bus way up the road.

“It’s just this camera angle isn’t showing it fully. The bus driver was clearly not paying attention. And the road being wet is irrelevant because you should drive according to road conditions,” he argued.

Instagram user, shenb_12, who said a family member of hers was seated in the Coaster bus at the time of the crash, also blamed the Coaster driver.

“@farmer_777777 lol my sister was in the bus and the bus driver is wrong and he was definitely speeding and obviously u can see in the video…

“The truck was already coming straight out of another lane, so the bus driver was trying to beat the truck,” she opined.

Another Instagrammer, venom_unit, also came to the defence of the trailer driver.

“A 40ft container is attached to the trailer. The trailer head already make it cross the road, so 40ft of container already turn across the road…

“The bus nuh brake or swing mean him never see the BIG old container attached???” he questioned.

But another Instragram user said the trailer driver should also be blamed for the collision.

That user, ox.unapologetically.xo, declared: “@venom_unit the truck driver is wrong!”

Continuing, he said: “Coaster has the right way. Truck driver turned too slow and didn’t have enough time to clear the road.

“The Coaster is also at fault for going too fast… He should have been able to stop, but I figure his brakes failed…

“You can’t assume people going to stop. You have to drive knowing that your next action won’t cause an accident. He (the truck driver) should have let the Coaster go by before turning,” stated the social media user.

Gregvi74 agreed that the trailer driver should take some of the blame for the collision.

“Busy road that and him a turn so slow pan it. Yes, the Coaster bus man could a stop, but the trailer driver should a know better,” he opined.

EYEWITNESS: Looking at …Agriculture

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana

Well…if this is October, it gotta be “Agriculture Month”. Back in the day – of Cheddi and Burnham – October evoked the “great” 1917 October Russian Revolution that was supposed to usher in the “new Communist World Order”. But not even Lenin’s successor, Putin, has mentioned that titbit as he desperately tries to fend off a Western-backed push to oust him from power!!

The Russian Revolutionaries also had agriculture high on their agenda. In accordance with their communist dogma, they pushed collectivisation of farms which were owned by farmers, called “kulaks”. The kulaks rebelled, and in the process of collectivisation, thousands were killed directly – mostly shot on the spot – during the 1930s. About 2 million were forcibly deported to the Far North and Siberia. They were called “enemies of the people,” as well as swine, dogs, cockroaches, scum, vermin, filth, garbage, half-animals, apes!!

Collectivised agriculture was also tried in the 1950s in Communist China, but it failed there also. So, it’s reassuring to your Eyewitness – who’s of strong peasant stock – that the Government hasn’t mentioned “collectivisation” in its announced stress on agriculture!! All the “old dogs” are gone, so no new tricks had to be taught!!

As usual, we have a theme for the month: “Championing food security: through innovation, investment and resilience”. Yup…hunger’s now a “security” issue!! So, now the farmer can see himself on par with those brave soldiers defending us from those nasty Venezuelans and Surinamese who’re lurking to seize chunks of our motherland!! But seriously folks, the war in Ukraine plus the dramatic changes in weather patterns – brought on by climate change – should’ve driven home the fact that food shortages are as much a threat to our lives as bullets. Of course, when you simultaneously face both threats, like in Tigray, you’re up the creek without a paddle.

Anyhow, you’d think that with “agri-business” invented here and the West Indies – what do you think “plantations” were?? – with sugar, we’d be ahead of the game. But funding was always the constraint after independence; we couldn’t very well go back to slavery and indentureship, could we?? So, now that we’ve thrown off that albatross, better late than never!!

Your Eyewitness believes we have a good game plan for our Intermediate Savannahs with new crops like soya, corn and wheat. But he believes it would be better to lease out abandoned sugar lands to workers.

More efficient use for these lands!!

…British racism

This story on the Kwasi Kwarteng, the first Black Chancellor of Britain, is copied without comment from the BBC: Kwarteng called out the Mirror on Twitter with a screenshot of the story about him which erroneously used a picture of another man outside a Treasury building.

“That isn’t me,” tweeted the Chancellor.

The story, headlined “Kwasi Kwarteng says he had to do ‘something different’ after causing budget chaos”, instead pictured Bernard Mensah, the President of International for Bank of America.

Mr Mensah had been among representatives of US banks meeting the Chancellor at the Treasury on Wednesday.

The Mirror said in a statement: “This morning, a picture in a story about Kwasi Kwarteng was wrongly captioned on the Mirror website. This was a terrible error, and we apologise to Mr Kwarteng and all our readers. The Mirror has a long history of working against racism, and we will redouble our efforts on this.”

The wrong image appeared underneath a link promoting Black History Month stories on the Mirror website.

Hornsey and Wood Green Conservative Chairman Ben Obese-Jecty said: “Good to see the Daily Mirror kicking off its coverage of Black History Month with this “they-all-look-the-same-don’t-they?” clanger.

“You’d think, given the coverage he’s received this week, that most people in the press would know what Kwasi Kwarteng looked like…”

Indonesia: At Least 125 Dead In Football Stadium Crush – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

At least 125 people have died in a crush at an Indonesian football match that has become one of the world’s worst stadium disasters.

Hundreds were also hurt in aftermath of home team Arema FC’s loss to bitter rivals at the overcrowded stadium late on Saturday in Malang, East Java.

The crush took place after police tear-gassed fans who invaded the pitch.

As panic spread, thousands surged towards Kanjuruhan stadium’s exits, where many suffocated.

Fifa, the world’s governing football body, states that no “crowd control gas” should be carried or used by stewards or police at matches.

The organisation’s president Gianni Infantino said it was “a dark day for all involved in football and a tragedy beyond comprehension”.

One eyewitness told the BBC that police had fired numerous tear gas rounds “continuously and fast” after the situation with fans became “tense”.

Next to one exit gate a hole smashed through the wall testifies to the desperation to escape the crush that developed. There are candles next to the gate, put there by supporters to remember the victims.

The doors themselves are slanted outwards, a sign of the sheer level of force from the inside.

‘It had gotten anarchic’ – Police

Indonesian officials at one stage put the death toll in the disaster as high at 174 people, but this was later revised downwards.

President Joko Widodo has ordered that all matches in Indonesia’s top league must be stopped until an investigation has been carried out.

The CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank Walk for the Cure in Barbados was an incident-free success from the police standpoint.

Speaking to Loop News along the route through Waterford Bottom pass the first entrance to the National Botanical Gardens, Inspector Angus Cox said:

“It’s been running smoothly. We haven’t had any complaints of accidents.”

Asked if he thinks that Bajans were eagerly anticipating the return to the first in-person Walk for the Cure since the two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, he agreed wholeheartedly saying, “very much so!”

In respect to numbers, Inspector Cox said that from his viewpoint, “I believe Barbadians were looking forward to this because the numbers to us looking even greater than before.”

As to any issues along the route, he only pointed out that there was some traffic build-up in some areas due to the road closures, but he said that that should have been expected.

Ambulance responded to one call Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

Barbadians who embarked upon the 2022 Walk for the Cure made it without medical attention or intervention for the most part.

Research and Planning Officer of the Barbados Fire Service Andrew Taylor was pleased with the outcome of today’s CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank Walk for the Cure which saw thousands of persons celebrating the 20th year of this fundraiser activity.

He told Loop News:

“I would say it was pretty much incident-free. The ambulance that was following the crowd from the start. They would have responded to one incident. But so far, no other major incidents were reported to us.”

The ambulance rushed through Waterford around 5:16 pm.

Most people wore comfortable walking or running shoes, but Loop saw some people changing shoes, mashing down their shoes or even holding their sneakers in their hands during the route from the Everton Weekes roundabout in Warrens to the National Botanical Gardens. One or two people seemed to catch cramp and sat to massage it out as well. While others were just so grateful to see the water station strategically located along Waterford Bottom to help them stay hydrated that they ran happily to the distributors with outstretched arms.

Despite the showers of rain around 4:30 pm that bathed the masses and turned the pink shirts almost red, there weren’t slips and falls or injuries reported as well.

When asked if he thought that Bajans came out more prepared for today’s walk than in the past, Fire Officer Taylor added, “Yes and no, because we left a lot of people behind also, but yes for the most part, I think people were just excited to be back out again and do the walk.”
