Ian Floods Sections Of Florida

Hurricane Ian carved a path of destruction across Florida, trapping people in flooded homes, cutting off the only bridge to a barrier island, destroying a historic waterfront pier and knocking out power to 2.5 million people as it dumped rain over a huge area on Thursday.

Catastrophic flooding was threatened around the state as one of the strongest hurricanes to ever hit the United States crossed the peninsula. Ian’s tropical-storm-force winds extended outward up to 415 miles (665 km), drenching much of Florida and the southeastern Atlantic coast.

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said Hurricane Ian crushed his county, making roads and bridges impassable, stranding thousands in the county where Ian made landfall just north of Fort Myers.

Black Immigrant Daily News

Kartel’s lawyer says prison transfer in rain ‘an attempt on his life’ Loop Jamaica

Prominent attorney-at-law Isat Buchanan has labelled the sudden transfer of high-profile prisoner Vybz Kartel from Horizon Remand Centre to Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre (formerly General Penitentiary) as “an attempt on his life”.

The incarcerated entertainer, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, was transferred on Thursday.

“Transferring Mr Palmer in the rain, causing him to get wet, given his medical condition is an attempt at his life,” Buchanan told Loop News on Thursday evening.

“It is deliberate and/or negligent and unacceptable,” Buchanan insisted.

The attorney said no reasons were given by the Department of Correctional Services for the transfer.

“His case is before the highest court of this land. I am very disappointed that taxpayers’ money is being wasted for fishing expeditions and PR stunts. The move comes following the airing of an interview on Fox 5 by his fianc?e as well as the eve of the anniversary of his arrest 11 years ago,” Buchanan said.

Kartel’s transfer came right after it was revealed during a Fox 5 New York interview that Vybz Kartel was now engaged to Turkish social worker Sidem Ozturk. Ozturk told journalist Lisa Evers that she and Kartel got engaged in the summer of 2022 during an authorised prison visit.

“I urge all Jamaicans to download ‘True Religion’, a tribute to Sidem, which comes out tonight at 11pm. It’s a really good love story,” Buchanan said.

Vybz Kartel is awaiting the outcome of his appeal at the Privy Council in the UK. He has been in prison since 2011 for the murder of a man named Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams, along with his co-accused fellow artiste Shawn Storm and two others.

A distraught mother is hoping for the safe return of her missing teenage son.

Nineteen-year-old Simeon Benjamin James left his Ti Rocher, Castries home on Saturday to view a football match in the Dennery valley.

His mother, Unica James, told St Lucia Times that the youngster had asked her permission to go.

The mother explained that the teenager would not go without asking permission.

She said that after staying with a childhood friend, Simeon was due back home on Monday to prepare for his Bocage Secondary School graduation on Thursday.

Unica said her only son, the second of three children, has never stayed out and not called her.

“If he is going to stay out another day, he will make sure he called me even if his phone goes dead, he would find another phone and call me – ‘Mommy, that’s me. That’s Simeon. My phone is dead. I am just calling you to tell you I am okay. I am on a bus coming down’ or ‘I am not coming down today. I will come down tomorrow’.”

The distraught mother said she made a missing person’s report to the police.

“I am trying to keep my faith up and don’t believe any negativity,” Unica told St Lucia Times.

Black Immigrant Daily News

Upgraded land zoning policy coming soon Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

By the end of the year, there will be an upgraded water protection and land use zoning policy.

While speaking at the Frederick Smith Secondary School for St James Speaks town hall meeting on Wednesday, September 28, Deputy Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw stated the revised zoning legislation will be coming soon.

“We have been working on the Water Reuse Legislation, both Minister Symmonds and myself through the BNSI [Barbados National Standards Institution] and the Ministry, particularly the Barbados Water Authority on the zoning legislation,” she shared.

“I am hoping for before the end of the year,”continued the Deputy Prime Minister on the revised zoning legislation which marks the replacement of Zones One to Five with zones A to E.

The Green Paper on the 2020 Water Protection and Land Use Zoning Policy proposed the existing zones be replaced with Zone A being a strict exclusion zone, smaller in area than the existing Zone 1, with no new developments and restricted agriculture. Zone B, a pathogen management zone with stricter rules for sewage treatment and disposal; Zone C a chemicals management zone; Zone D is a recharged controlling zone, which encompasses additional limestone areas with continued standards for wastewater treatment; and Zone E a non-recharged contributing area, a non-recharge contributing area that primarily consists of areas that do not contribute to the recharge of aquifers [ Scotland District].

When questioned about when the new zones will take effect, Bradshaw stressed that Government was in the process of fine-tuning the legislation.

“We have had to look not only at introduction of the legislation but also how are we going to practically get people to look at the issues of plumbing codes when the legislation actually comes into effect….We wanted to make sure that we also have the water protection zones also sorted and so the teams have been examining that and we have had to go back and add a few zones,” she revealed.

“I believe in the next few weeks we will be able to complete that, with the view to be able to bring that to Parliament, but there is a lot of other work that has to go on behind the scenes to make sure when we bring the legislation, we can bring relief to the number of persons who have been affected in the Zone One areas,” the Deputy Prime Minister continued.

She emphasized that the Government sought to provide clear demarcation of the zones so residents will be able to identify those that can be used for housing.

“I hear the cry for being able to have one house on the land but I think you can appreciate that we are trying to protect the groundwater supply and so we have been very careful to identify what we can do in particular areas so as to stop the contaminants from being able to go into the groundwater,” Bradshaw insisted.
