The National Works Agency (NWA) has a word of advice for motorists who may want to gain access to the Bog Walk Gorge in St Catherine, whenever it is declared closed by the authorities.
The advice: Don’t.
The agency released a video on Monday showing two men seemingly attempting to gain access to the Bog Walk Gorge. Earlier Monday, the authorities issued an advisory that the gorge had been closed because it was impassable as a result of the adverse weather conditions the country has been experiencing.
Since late Saturday, Jamaica has been experiencing showers and thunderstorms associated with the outer bands of Hurricane Ian, which has led to flooding and landslides in most of the parishes across the island.
NWA tweeted the video Monday afternoon with the caption: “A prime example of what NOT to do when we say the Bog Walk Gorge is closed. We strongly denounce and discourage such dangerous acts.”

$6.2b PSIP focuses on economic, social transformation

Government has allocated $6.2 billion to the 2023 Public Sector Investment Programme, which continues along its national development strategy for 2016-2025. This segment is for 2023-2025.
Of the allocation, 51.6 per cent, or $3.2 billion, is from the Consolidated Fund for programmes undertaken by government ministries, local government bodies and the Tobago House of Assembly.
The balance of $2,98 billion, or 48.4 per cent, will be disbursed from the Infrastructure Development (IDF) for use by special-purpose state enterprises.
The PSIP continues its focus on diversification, improving institutional capacity, the expansion of business into foreign markets, foreign investment and information-driven transformation.
This includes the restructuring of the Central Statistical Office into the National Statistical Institute of TT; investment in the creative sector, agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and youth development and health, with emphasis on HIV/Aids healthcare.
As part of plans for the National Statistical Institute, $2 million is provided for preparatory work that includes an information technology data management system. In the interim, $37 million will be used to continue the operations of the CSO.
Other data-collection initiatives include: the 2022 Population and Housing Census, a survey on the living conditions of women and children and a household budget survey.
Part of economic transformation again includes support to the creative industries under the TT Creative Industries Co Ltd to stimulate activity in the film, music and fashion sub-sectors.
“In fiscal 2023, $4.8 million will be invested for the continued development of these sub-sectors towards realising the full potential of the sub-sectors and increasing the contribution to GDP and foreign exchange earnings.”
The TT Music Co Ltd (MusicTT) will receive $1.5 million, and the TT Fashion Co Ltd gets $1.8 million, with $400,000 funding for trade and investment facilitation at the Trade and Industry Ministry.
Additionally, a maximum $1 million grant will be available for qualifying firms for the cost of projects.

May Pen Mayor, Winston Maragh, has reported that there have been flooding in some areas of the parish, such as Mineral Heights, Bucknor, Glenmore Road, Palmer’s Cross, Sandy Bay and May Pen Woods, as the island experiences adverse weather conditions since Saturday.
“The drains weren’t cleaned before the start of the hurricane season, these drains fall under the responsibility of the National Works Agency (NWA) and the municipality. The funding was just not readily available,” said Maragh.
Despite the reports of flooding in several areas of Clarendon, very few residents there have yet been displaced.
“We have received video footage of a house flooded out in the 19 Miles area of Sandy Bay, but the people in other affected areas have not yet been displaced as of now, but the rising waters in the drains can be a major problem if the rains continue,” Maragh stated.
The Meteorological Service has maintained a flash flood warning for low-lying and flood-prone areas of the north eastern and southern parishes, effective until 5am on Tuesday.
In a release on Monday morning, the Met Service extended the flash flood warning for low-lying and flood-prone areas of St Mary, Portland, St Thomas, Kingston and St Andrew, St Catherine and Clarendon.
The Met Service announced that Tropical Storm Ian has now been upgraded to Hurricane Ian and is located near 18.2 degrees north and 82.0 degrees west, or 391 kilometres west-southwest of Negril Point, Jamaica.

A 23-year-old man is now in hospital under the watchful eyes of the police after he was shot in a gun attack on a policeman at the cop’s home in Spanish Town, St Catherine, on Saturday night.
The man, who has been identified as Michael Smith, otherwise called Jahnoy, of Fairfield Road, also in Spanish Town, has been hit with a battery of charges, including shooting with intent and illegal possession of firearm.
Reports from the police are that the cop was in the process of removing items from his car when he was pounced on by two men, one armed with a rifle and the other with a handgun.
The men reportedly opened fire at the policeman who returned the gunfire.
The men fled the scene. However, one of the suspects later turned up at hospital with bullet wounds to his face.
He was hospitalised and subsequently charged.
