Charlene Goddard will represent Barbados in the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games [CAC] following her recent performance at the Copa Merengue CAC qualifier world ranking event.

The competition, which was hosted at Pabell?n de Arquer?a, Parque del Este in Santo Domingo, took place from September 6 to September 11, 2022.

Speaking to Loop Sports, 28-year-old Goddard said that she was feeling conflicted about her performance.

“I have mixed emotions about my performance,” she explained. “I struggled a bit to settle down in the qualification round and it resulted in me not shooting a score I would have liked, but I picked myself back up in eliminations and felt better about my performance during then.”

The Medical Laboratory Technologist who works at Bayview Laboratory in Belleville, St Michael revealed that she not only placed second in the CAC qualifier, but also ninth in a world ranking event against over 100 competitors.

“I competed in two competitions while I was there. One being the CAC qualifier which I placed second overall and opened a Senior Compound female slot for Barbados. The second was a world ranking event in which I placed ninth overall.”

Goddard, who is an experienced archer having been shooting for over 15 years, disclosed that this was not her first time competing abroad, however, the weather conditions in the Dominican Republic were something she had never experienced before.

“I have been competing overseas for quite some time. My last competition would have been a world ranking shoot in Medellin Colombia last year May, which I would have finished fourth overall. There hasn’t been much difference with competing at different competitions. The only thing I can think about is the weather. Some countries I have competed in have been freezing while others, for example Dominican Republic, was extremely hot, I have never experienced heat like that in my life.”

Currently, Goddard is focusing on training for the CAC games with her eyes set on the 2023 Pan American Qualifier as well.

“I would like to attend the Pan American Qualifier next year. I am unsure of dates but for now, I am mainly focusing on my training for the CAC games.”

Looking ahead with determination, she took a moment to thank her family and friends who play an important role in her archery career. “My coach, family, husband and friends, each one of them play an important role in my archery career.” She added, “They are always proud of me no matter the outcome.”

Big rivalries abound in cricket: India vs Pakistan, England vs Australia. In the Caribbean Premier League, the biggest rivalry is between the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) and the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR), and these two heavyweight teams will lock horns at Providence today, Saturday, September 24, from 19:00h.

According to TKR captain Kieron Pollard, he is expecting the Providence Stadium to be packed as the biggest rivalry in the ‘biggest party in sport’ takes centre stage.

Speaking after Thursday’s match which the TKR lost to the Patriots, Pollard said: “Game got away from us in the last four overs with the ball. That’s what shows us what T20 cricket is. Need to do yorkers better. The next game is a must-win, and we expect a packed stadium. This is why we play the game.”

Meanwhile, GAW captain Shimron Hetmyer has been ecstatic after his side chased down 195 against the St Lucia Kings on Thursday.

“Coming home, we knew we had to do our best, and the guys continued to deliver time and time again. Well done to the guys. When you are chasing 190-odd, you just tell the guys that you have nothing to lose. That was the thinking, and it worked for us. Bowling at night here is tough, and can’t fault the guys. Faf played a top knock, one of the best that I’ve seen in a while. I just told the guys to enjoy themselves and give the crowd a proper show, irrespective of how the result ends,” Hetmyer said.

For the Warriors, Shai Hope has found form, scoring back-to-back fifties. He has 175 runs this season at an average of 43.75. Despite not being dominant, Hetmyer has 196 runs this season, while Chandrapaul Hemraj, who is due for a big innings, has 142 runs.

In the bowling department, Imran Tahir has eight wickets while Romario Shepherd and Odean Smith each have seven this season.

TKR have not been clinical, as had obtained in the past. Tim Seifert has 208 runs, leading the batting charts for TKR, but his strike rate is only 94. Colin Munro has 128 runs this season, while Pollard and Andre Russell have 119 and 107 respectively. They have only shown glimpses of destructiveness this season.

Hope, who scored a classic 59 at Providence and won the player of the match award, has noted that it felt good to bat. He also noted that the team has self-belief. “Feels good to get out there and do what I love, which is batting. Missed a few games early on. We had self-belief, we wanted to stick to our plans, and were confident of chasing them off. It’s just about doing what the team requires, batting to a plan, and I needed to up the strike rate, so that’s what I did. I never played in front of such a great crowd; hopefully, we can get them more wins. Of course, you have to have it (self-belief about winning the title),” Hope said at the post-match presser.

Additionally, Rahmanullah Gurbaz has said he is enjoying his first outing in the CPL. “I really enjoy the people and the love they are giving us. I am excited to be here. We love the crowd, and the crowd is really nice, they support us from start to end, the crowd is amazing,” Gurbaz has said.

The Warriors and TKR are both at the bottom of the table with seven points, but a win would take one of these teams into qualification contention. Will it be chicken curry or curry chicken? Time would tell.

GAW Squad: Chandrapaul Hemraj, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Shai Hope, Shakib Al Hasan, Shimron Hetmyer (c), Romario Shepherd, Gudakesh Motie, Odean Smith, Keemo Paul, Junior Sinclair, Imran Tahir, Ronsford Beaton, Jermaine Blackwood, Matthew Nandu, Veerasammy Permaul, Colin Ingram and Paul Stirling.

TKR Squad: Tim Seifert(w), Leonardo Julien, Colin Munro, Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard (c), Akeal Hosein, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Khary Pierre, Ravi Rampaul, Daryn Dupavillon, Anderson Phillip, Ali Khan, Tion Webster, Terrance Hinds, Jayden Seales, Mahesh Theekshana, Shaaron Lewis, and Seekkuge Prasanna.

Bail for Guayaguayare man accused of killing teen

A Guayaguayare man accused of killing a teenager from the area in 2019 has been granted bail by a High Court judge.

On Thursday, Justice Carla Brown-Antoine granted $350,000 bail to Timothy Romany, 22, after she found there were no substantial grounds for believing he would abscond, interfere with witnesses or commit further offences if released on bail.

Romany’s bail is to be approved by a registrar with a surety and he must report to the police station closest to his home once a week.

Romany was also put on a 9 pm-5 am curfew and ordered not to contact any of the witnesses in the case. He also has to surrender his passport and is prohibited from applying for one without the court’s permission.

Romany was arrested in March 2020 for the murder of 16-year-old Christian Smith on July 7, 2019.

Police said Smith was in the living room of his New Lands Village, Guayaguayare, home at around 11.45 pm when he was shot several times.

His mother found his body with gunshot wounds to the face.

The preliminary inquiry into Smith’s murder is expected to begin in January 2023 at the Mayaro Magistrates’ Court.

At the bail hearing held at the San Fernando High Court, Brown-Antoine was not convinced of the strength of the prosecution’s case. She also considered Smith’s good character as he has no pending criminal charges against him nor was he convicted of anything before he was charged with the murder.

Romany was represented by attorney Yves Jacques Nicholson while the State was represented by senior prosecutor Anju Bhola.

Diplomacy failed to resolve Suriname-Guyana fishing troubles – Govt

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana

See below for the full statement from Guyana’s Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ministry:

The following is a timeline of the political and diplomatic efforts made by the Government of Guyana to secure SK fishing licenses for its fisherfolk to fish in Surinamese waters off the Atlantic Coast:

This issue was discussed at the Presidential level in 2020. Following, at the first meeting of the Agriculture Working Group under the SDCP, which was convened in Suriname in November 2020, Guyana requested that Suriname issues 150 SK licenses to Guyanese fishermen to fish offshore Suriname.
In agreeing to the granting of the licenses, the Government of Suriname indicated that it would set up a government -owned company to be the business partner of the Guyanese fishermen with which they will sign a Vessel basing Agreement, and which will take care of the registration of the vessels of the Guyanese fishermen. This was in keeping with Suriname’s fishing legislation.
The Government of Suriname also proposed the conclusion of a Fisheries Agreement between the two countries which would also address the granting of licenses. Guyana continued to engage in the discussions with Suriname in good faith with the expectation that they would result in a mutually beneficial arrangement.
The Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries of Suriname also requested the names of the middlemen from whom the Guyanese fishermen were renting their licenses. Further, a number of criteria were outlined for the formation of the company.
Guyana complied with all the other requirements of Suriname for the setting up of the company and after some reluctance on the part of the Guyanese fishermen, the names of the middlemen were eventually handed over to the Surinamese Government.
The Foreign Ministers of Guyana and Suriname also remained in communication on the issue. Guyana’s Foreign Minister wrote to his Surinamese counterpart, Minister Albert Ramdin on 13 August 2021, reminding him of Suriname’s commitment to issue the licenses.
The Presidents of Guyana and Suriname met between 17-20 August 2021 in Georgetown and discussed the issuance of SK fishing licences to Guyanese fisherfolk. The Joint Communique issued by the Presidents from those discussions committed “that both Ministers responsible would work towards the issuance of fishing licences in that category by January 1, 2022, keeping in mind the established quota on the Surinamese side.”
For several months, nothing further was heard from Suriname, and Minister Todd again wrote a letter dated 20 December 2021, to his Surinamese counterpart, Minister Ramdin, reminding him of the commitment and urging his intervention in bringing about a resolution of that outstanding matter.
Minister Todd received a response dated January 6, 2022, from his Surinamese counterpart in which Minister Ramdin suggested that the Ministers of Agriculture of both countries convene a meeting on January 13, 2022 in order to reach an agreement. The proposed meeting was never convened.
At the Guyana/ Suriname/ Brazil Tripartite Summit which was held in Suriname, on 20 January 2022, the Presidents of Guyana and Suriname met, and the licenses were again discussed. President Santokhi then indicated that he remains committed to the issuance of SK licenses to Guyanese fishermen.
Guyana did not receive any further formal or substantive communication from Suriname on the issue.

While the foregoing diplomatic and political initiatives were being undertaken, Guyanese fishermen continued to be harassed in Surinamese waters as they attempted to continue to ply their trade for their subsistence and that of their families. Matters escalated this year when Suriname confiscated three Guyanese fishing vessels along with their nets and engines and sold the catch. Following the conclusion of the matter, Guyana reached out to Suriname to release the vessels on humanitarian grounds, but there was no accommodation to this effect.

It is evident that the diplomatic engagement has so far not reaped the desired outcome.

Guyana remains committed to good neighbourly relations with Suriname.
