Cabinet Concludes Successful School Tours for 39th Anniversary of Independence

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 15, 2022 (SKNIS): The Cabinet of Ministers completed the school tours in St. Kitts for the 39th anniversary of Independence on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, having imparted words of wisdom and best wishes to students, faculty and staff at public and private primary and secondary schools.
During a visit to the Verchilds High School (VHS), the Honourable Samal Duggins, Minister responsible for the Creative Economy, told the assembled students that the school provides a good foundation to help children develop into successful adults. This was emphasized using a story shared by the current VHS Principal, Miguel Thomas.
“He [Mr. Thomas] made it clear that I was once his teacher. And he is now the Principal of the same school that I once taught him at,” the Minister stated. “What I want you to understand here and now as students, is that where we stand today, you will stand tomorrow. Where we are today, will be your space tomorrow, so our duty here today is to ensure that we offer you the best. We want to offer you the best of the resources, guidance, and teaching so that tomorrow when you stand in our position, you will be the best that you can be.”
Meanwhile, on a visit to his alma mater, the Dean Glasford Primary School, Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew and the Cabinet were welcomed by a cultural performance featuring The Monkey Hill Bull Troupe, St. Peter’s Explorer’s Bull Troupe, and the St. Peter’s Actors. The performers were primarily young people.
Prime Minister Drew expressed delight to see that the cultural traditions are alive and well in the community. In sharing remarks on Independence, he credited the five National Heroes of St. Kitts and Nevis, namely, the Late Excellencies Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, Sir C. A. Paul Southwell, Sir Joseph N. France, and Sir Simeon Daniel. The fifth National Hero is Dr. the Right Excellent and the Right Honourable Sir Kennedy A. Simmonds.
“I want to pay homage to our National Heroes who would have contributed and dedicated themselves to making us an independent nation today. But I also want you to recognize those who may have participated … given their sweat and blood to make us an independent nation,” Honourable Drew said.
Those heroes mentioned included the grandmothers and grandfathers who sacrificed by working in the sugar cane fields, marching and striking for workers’ rights decades ago.
The Independence 39 School Tours took place on Friday, September 09, Tuesday, September 13, and Wednesday, September 14.

Tau Battice Encourages Kittitians and Nevisians to Tap Into Their Visual and Creative Faculties

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 15, 2022 (SKNIS): Professor and world-renowned photographer, a son of the soil, and featured speaker for the Prime Minister’s Independence Lecture Series, Valdon Tau Battice, encouraged Kittitians and Nevisians to tap into their visual and creative faculties as they envision where they would like to see St. Kitts and Nevis.
“As you re-envision what you can be and what this country can be, I ask you to tap into the art of visualizing and when I say visualizing I don’t just mean seeing with your two eyes, but more importantly seeing with your mind’s eyes,” said Mr. Battice, as he spoke to packed crowed on Wednesday, September 14, at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort Ballroom. “You need to be creative with this visualization. Creative visualization just like the laws of gravity and nature work for all, but you must continually visualize and create and re-create what you see in your physical world through your thoughts.”
Mr. Battice, who is also a Professor at Guttman College of the City University of New York, appealed to the younger generation to pen and post their vision.
“Please, particularly young people or the younger amongst us, write down your vision. I advise with a pen and paper but whether with pen and paper or electronically, post it somewhere where it can beckon you constantly. If you move to your car your vision will speak and it will not lie,” he said.
In questioning what they see for themselves, as well as for St. Kitts and Nevis, Mr. Battice called on every citizen to be imaginative.
“I call on you to be imaginative. Imagining isn’t just stuff of babies or of carefree children, it is in fact the hallmark of the creative mind – the mature mind. The secret of visualization is in imagining the outcome. Begin with the outcome and constantly refocus on that outcome,” he said. “I say this to you as individuals but I also say this to our leaders. Leaders, I remind you to be imaginative in pursuing our common good. So, I say to you whatever good and great you have envisioned for yourself, for your country, whatever those visions are, get to focusing and refocusing on them.”
The Prime Minister’s annual Lecture Series formed part of St. Kitts and Nevis’ Independence celebrations and features prominent speakers from various spheres of influence from St. Kitts and Nevis. The Lecture Series focused on the theme for this year’s Independence which is “Refocus, Re-create, Redesign: Independence 39”.

Minister Phillip Thanks Professor Battice for Delivering a Very Engaging Prime Minister’s Lecture

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 15, 2022 (SKNIS): The Honourable Isalean Phillip, Junior Minister in the Federal Cabinet of St. Kitts and Nevis thanked the Featured Speaker for the Prime Minister’s Independence Lecture Series, Valdon Tau Battice, for delivering a very engaging and thought-provoking message on September 14.
“I believe that others would agree that your presentation was very engaging not only audibly but also visually as you really challenged us to think about how we as citizens, residents and leaders can refocus our vision for the future outcomes of our great Federation,” said Minister Phillip, who was tasked with responding to the lecture. “You not only challenged us to dream big as we re-envision what we want, can be and all that we will be as a people and as a nation, but you have also called us to action. You have called us to be innovative and to re-create our institutions, systems, culture and social life for more self-sufficiency and improved quality of life.”
Minister Phillip said that in light of St. Kitts and Nevis’ 39 Years of Independence, Mr. Battice has asked some very pertinent questions.
“These questions cause us to think about where we are now, who we are and what we want to become. I believe that for a developing nation like ours, this question about what we envision and how we want to re-create and redesign ourselves is timeless. We should always be thinking about who we are and who we want to become,” said Senator Phillip.
Junior Minister Phillip in her response to the questions asked by Mr. Battice said that her vision and by extension that of the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is simply greatness.
“My vision for St. Kitts and Nevis is that wherever our flag is flown or the name of our country is mentioned, I want people to say… they are the smallest country in the Western Hemisphere and the people are so talented, well-educated, poised and progressive,” she said. “My vision for this land of beauty is for us to blossom and for us to take up space on every stage. Like the Royal Poinciana, our National Flower, I see our people growing and evolving with certitude, assurance and confidence as the unstoppable force that we are.”
As St. Kitts and Nevis celebrates 39 years of Independence, Junior Minister Phillip said that “luckily for all of us we are celebrating with a new Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, who is ably supported and complemented by a highly competent and capable team of ministers whose visions and dreams for greatness similarly align. With all this newness, there would be no better time for us to Refocus our vision, Re-create for self-sufficiency and to Redesign for innovation as we celebrate Independence 39.”

Nineteen Citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis Recognized for Their Sterling Contribution to Nation-Building

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 16, 2022 (SKNIS): In keeping with the National Honours Act, nineteen (19) citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis were recognized for their sterling contribution to nation-building. The names were revealed during the National Heroes’ Day Observance Address by Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew on National Heroes’ Day on Friday, September 16, 2022.
The National Honours Act established a trio of merit-based awards, which includes the Medal of Honour, the Companion of the Star of Merit, and the Order of National Hero. The Companion of the Star of Merit, which is awarded for long and meritorious service, or for loyal and devoted service to the nation was awarded to 16 nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis, two of whom received it posthumously.
They are: Eileen Grey for her contribution to Education, Culture and Sports; Dennis Richards for Education, Arts and Culture; Lorraine Browne, Wayland Vaughan, Violet Jones-Mawnlawde and Dr. Lincoln Carty for their contribution to Education; Sylvester Charles for Education, Music, Sports and Volunteerism; Maxwell Bass Senior for Music and Security Services, while Nathan Esdaille and Elsie ‘Teacher Elsie’ Mills were recognized for their contribution to Education and Religion.
Shirley Kelly was awarded for her contribution to Nursing Education; Lorna Ava Henry for Culture and the Arts; Pastor Lincoln Connor for Nation-Building and Youth Development, and Clement ‘Juni’ Liburd for Broadcasting. The late Lloyd Lazar and Kenrick Georges were awarded posthumously for their contributions to Education and Sports and Arts and Music respectively.
The Medal of Honour was awared to Mable Morton for Community Service and Entrepreneurship; Clyde Richardson for Music and the Arts, and James ‘Mickey’ Frederick was awarded for Performing Arts and Culture. This award is given to nationals for their outstanding and meritorious service to the nation.
Prime Minister Dr. Drew congratulated this year’s recipients adding that they are all well-deserving of the honour.
“It brings me great pleasure to bestow this honour to you. You have served your country well and I pray your lives continue to be an example and inspiration to all,” said Prime Minister Drew. “I look forward to the day when we as a nation recognize and salute our brave women who have brought about transformative change to our twin-island Federation, by esteeming them with the ultimate honour of National Hero.”
Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Drew added “Inside each of you, there is a hero telling you to cast your fears aside, telling you not to wait and see, but to believe in yourself and to go for it. Chase your dreams. Allow the legacy of our national heroes to inspire a revolution and an awakening of self-pride and consciousness, individually and as a nation.”

‘Full Investigation’ Underway Into Reports Of Ill-Treatment Of Saint Lucian Farm Workers In Canada – St. Lucia Times News

Labour Minister Dr. Virginia Albert-Poyotte has announced a full investigation into reports that Saint Lucian farm workers suffered ill-treatment in Canada.
“The OECS and the Labour Department that is responsible for the farm workers in Canada – they are actually carrying out a full investigation,” the former trade unionist told reporters on Monday.
Last week, Saint Lucian Latoya Ben claimed that female workers were subjected to physical and verbal abuse on a strawberry farm in Canada, including being called ‘hungry dogs’.
“I am fully aware of the situation but I cannot give you the details of what exactly transpired, to what extent what the lady said is true or not true. So when we get the report that is coming out of the investigation we will make it available to the media,” Albert-Poyotte stated.

She disclosed that the OECS will also issue a press statement.
“I leave the departments responsible for the workers that went to Canada to speak very forcefully and in detail in giving the public the necessary information that they need,” the Minister stated.
Forty Saint Lucian women made history earlier this year as the first batch of females to enroll in the seasonal farm workers programme in Nova Scotia, Canada.
But Jamaica is reported to have withdrawn its workers from four Canadian farms since the start of this year due to unacceptable conditions.
Migrants and migrant-led organizations in Canada are urging equal rights, benefits and essential services for migrants.
One of them is the grassroots movement for migrant workers’ rights – ‘No One Is Illegal’ (NOII).
On its Facebook page, NOII said it regularly receives reports of abuse from migrant farm workers throughout the province and is supporting workers to organise.
According to the group, temporary immigration status in Canada makes it difficult for migrant workers to speak out about the abuse they are experiencing.
NOII explained that those who speak out can be fired, sent back to their home country, and not called back again.

Flood devastation caused by Fiona in Puerto Rico Loop Barbados

Images from local residents of the floods caused by Hurricane Fiona in Puerto Rico have been emerging.
Pastor Jorge Santiago of One Church Comerio filmed the fast-moving waters of the Plata river in Comer?o on Sunday.
“It is approximately, maybe, 10 feet from hitting the bridge,” Santiago could be heard saying in his video. “This is crazy.”
Hurricane Fiona knocked out the power grid and unleashed floods and landslides in Puerto Rico, where the governor said the damage was “catastrophic.”
No deaths have been reported, but authorities in the US territory said it was too early to estimate the damage from a storm that was still forecast to unleash torrential rain across Puerto Rico on Monday.
Up to 30 inches (76 centimetres) was forecast for Puerto Rico’s eastern and southern regions.
Brown water rushed through streets, into homes and even consumed a runway airport in southern Puerto Rico.
Fiona also ripped up asphalt from roads and washed away a bridge in the central mountain town of Utuado that police say was installed by the National Guard after Hurricane Maria hit in 2017 as a Category 4 storm.

Met Office monitoring slow westward moving tropical wave Loop Barbados

The Barbados Meteorological Services is closely monitoring the progress of a tropical wave located near 48W south of 13N as of 11 am today (September 19, 2022).
According to the statement issued, convection associated with the tropical wave is disorganized at this time as it moves slowly westward at 10 to 15 knots.
Current model guidance suggests that any development will be slow to occur over the next few days. However, regardless of development, the tropical wave is expected to affect the island sometime between Wednesday and Thursday this week.
During its passage, there is the possibility of two to four inches of rainfall and a deterioration in sea conditions which may warrant the issuance of watches/warnings from tomorrow, Tuesday, September 20, 2022.
The next update will be in 24 hours, around 12 noon tomorrow or sooner if conditions warrant.
