Jamaican Reggae Boyz Allegedly Called The ‘N’ Word In MLS Match

Black Immigrant Daily News

News Americas, WASHINGTON, D.C., Mon. Sept. 26, 2022: Major League Soccer, (MLS), is investigating an incident in which a racist slur was allegedly used against Jamaican Damion Lowe during his Inter Miami’s game against DC United on Sunday night, September 25, 2022.

It is alleged that DC United’s Greek forward Taxi Fountas used the N-word towards the Reggae Boyz player an hour into the MLS match, when the two had an altercation. Both were given yellow cards when the situation escalated.

According to reports, Inter Miami players threatened to walk off the field and subsequently spoke with manager Phil Neville who then had a conversation with DC United’s manager Wayne Rooney who substituted Fountas.

“MLS has zero tolerance for abusive and offensive language, and we take these allegations very seriously,” an MLS spokesperson said in a statement.

“An investigation into this matter will begin promptly. Further information will be provided upon completion of that investigation.”

Neville, meantime, said the racist comment was “unacceptable.”

“A word was used that I think is unacceptable in society. I think it’s the worst word in the world. I called the players over. I asked them if they were okay. I told them that we were going to stick together, deal with this, that it was unacceptable. There is . . . no place for racism in society, never mind on a football field,” the Inter Miami manager said.

The Jamaica Football Federation, (JFF), says it will give Lowe any needed support.

“The JFF strongly condemns and abhors racism in any form, whether on or off the field and we stand ready to give whatever support is necessary to Damion,” the JFF said in a statement.

However, in a statement posted to his Instagram account, Fountas said he did not use the word he was accused of using.

“That despicable racial slur is one I denounce and did not use. We had a hot discussion on the field, but I have not racially abused anyone. I firmly reject racism in any form, it is despicable. I have many friends from many cultures. I always respect the culture, religion and skin color of each person, I am therefore very upset by this accusation and saddened to be falsely accused,” he stated.

Best Caribbean NFL Players In 2022

Black Immigrant Daily News

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Mon. Sept. 19, 2022: The National Football League has certainly become more recognizable worldwide in the past couple of years. The 2022 NFL Season has just started, and it promises to be among the most entertaining ones in its entire history.

The Los Angeles Rams will try to defend their title from last year, while the runners-up from Buffalo are determined to dominate the competition and grab their first Super Bowl and their third overall title.

The Bills are also favored to win it all, according to most NFL betting lines. However, apart from the top contenders for the title, there are also other players we can certainly look out for during the season.

For instance, the Caribbean countries have undoubtedly produced one of the best athletes in recent years. Even though their strengths lie mostly within track & field events, they are definitely putting in a lot of work to grow and succeed elsewhere.

There have been several strong NFL players coming from the Caribbean in the last two decades. The Jamaican-born, Patrick Chung, might be one of the most successful athletes from this part of the world as the solid safety won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots throughout his career. Moreover, Victor Cruz and Pierre Garcon who hail from Puerto Rico and Haiti respectively have also written down their names in the NFL history books.

There are already some active experienced players from the Caribbean in the NFL who have been part of the league since 2015.

Rakeem Nathan Nunez-Roches (Belize) – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Rakeem Nathan Nunez-Roches is a Belizean nose tackle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After going on a fantastic swing during his college career, Nunez-Roches was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015. However, he struggled in his first year in the NFL, and even though he got plenty of playing time in 2016 and 2017, he was eventually traded to the Indianapolis Colts.

In October 2018, the talented Belizean was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It wasn’t until the 2020 NFL season before he got the head coach’s attention. He was selected as a starter in 11 games and recorded 20 tackles along the process, thus making his contribution to their second Super Bowl.

The 29-year-old athlete has made 100 tackles and 1.5 sacks throughout his career. However, his Super Bowl victory is what gives him the edge over other Caribbean players. He is certainly one of the most athletic and solid Buccaneers players in 2022 as Todd Bowles can only benefit from giving him more playing time this year.

Danielle Hunter (Jamaica) – Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota Vikings linebacker Danielle Hunter (99) was born in Jamaica.(Photo by Nick Wosika/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

Daniele Hunter is surely another example of an experienced NFL player from the Caribbean. His career stretches back to 2015 when he was drafted by his current team, the Minnesota Vikings. Hunter shined bright from his very first appearances in the NFL.

The 27-year-old has been an irreplaceable part of the Vikings between 2017 and 2019, starting in all 48 games for his team. He recorded his best numbers in 2018 when he finished off the season with 72 tackles, 14.5 sacks, and one fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Hunter might have missed out on winning a Super Bowl, but he was nominated to the Pro Bowl and was also named Second Team All-Pro in 2018. Ever since then, he struggled with injuries that held him back from proving his worth as a Viking. However, the outside linebacker returned with a masterful performance for a 23-7 win over the Green Bay Packers to start off the 2022 NFL season.

Javon Kinlaw (Trinidad & Tobago) – San Francisco 49ers

Javon Kinlaw was one of the most renowned players in college football as he was named First-Team All-SEC in 2019 following his strong senior season in South Carolina. In the following year, the Trinidadian made another huge statement in his maiden NFL season for the San Francisco 49ers. He ended up with 33 tackles and 1.5 sacks across 12 starts.

In Week 12, following an incredible interception and a 27-yard touchdown in a 23-20 win over the Los Angeles Rams, Kinlaw was named Pepsi Rookie of the Week. Unfortunately, he was placed on injured reserve last year which put an end to his momentum.

N’Keal Harry (St. Vincent and the Grenadines) – Chicago Bears

N-Keal Harry was born in Canada but raise in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

N’Keal Harry was among the most improved players from the Caribbean throughout the past NFL campaigns. Raised in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Harry moved to the United States at a young age. In 2016, he enrolled at the Arizona State University where he helped his team flourish across three seasons.

Harry was later on selected by the New England Patriots in the 2019 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, the team was unable to live up to the high expectations set during the previous years. However, he made the Playoffs twice in his career which certainly helped him gain much-needed experienced for his eventual growth. The New England Patriots announced that they traded Harry to the Chicago Bears in July. Terms of the trade were not announced

The athletic wide receiver is currently placed on the injury list following ankle issues. The head coach of the Bears confirmed Harry underwent surgery for his ankle issues last month.

Dominican Republic Cashes In On Gambling Tax Revenue

Black Immigrant Daily News

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Sept. 9, 2022: The Dominican Republic is reaping the rewards of the gambling industry on the island, which is being driven in part by the high levels of tourists visiting the country.

In 2019, the tax revenue from gambling in the Dominican Republic reached 1.27 billion Dominican pesos (almost $23 million). This makes the Pearl of the Antilles a major player in the gambling industry of the Caribbean.

With land-based casinos located in popular coastal areas, such as the Hotel Casino Niza in Las Terrenas, the Casino Dominic Capo Cana in Punta Cana, and countless casinos in Santo Domingo, including Princess Casino, Casino Mirage, and Casino Napolitano, the gambling industry is one sector benefiting from the influx of tourists.

A Hidden Gem

This phenomenon is exemplified by the town of Las Terrenas, rated by many as a hidden gem, which boasts beaches such as the Playa Bonita, ideal for surfing and snorkeling, along with the picture postcard beauty of the Salto Del Limón waterfall. These are just a couple of the sights which tourists are rewarded with after taking the two-and-a-half-hour bus journey from Santo Domingo.

The Hotel Casino Niza is another of the amenities available in the area, giving tourists the opportunity to play slots and table games such as roulette, one of the most popular casino games. Roulette is favored by many casino goers due to the simplicity of the game, although players can also place a range of side bets, which can be more difficult to understand. Many players like to play online for the variations, and are guides to roulette with tips on how to play which highlights the difference between the various roulette variations and explains the side bets. Roulette tables, alongside video slots and other table games, are also available to players at the casinos in Santo Domingo, which are represented by hotel casino resorts such as the Dominican Fiesta Hotel Santo Domingo.

A Booming Tourist Destination

With an annual average of around six million tourists, who are attracted to the country’s beaches and the history of the capital Santo Domingo, the casino industry functions as an extended section of the tourist industry. This is alongside other activities including kiteboarding, whale watching in Samaná Bay, which is recommended by guides to the country, and visiting the Parque Nacional del Este, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.

Tourism remains the main generator of income for the country, creating $7.4 billion in revenue in 2019, with tourist numbers on the rise in 2022, which is a reliable measure of the overall health of the economy, with S&P Global highlighting the sector as being responsible for the “impressive economic recovery” in the country. The Dominican Republic also raised approximately five billion Dominican pesos from tax on exit and entry fees for tourists in 2020. While the tourism sector is responsible for 8.4% of the economy, it has been argued by the Ministry of Tourism that related services, which include casino hotels, suggest the number is nearer 30%.

The Dominican Republic remains the pacesetter for the casino industry in the Caribbean. The country is able to take advantage of the high levels of tourism to create unobtrusive casino hotels, which, along with income from tourists, are making a significant contribution to the tax revenue of the country.

This Caribbean Immigrant Makes History As A UFC Champion

Black Immigrant Daily News

By NAN Sports Editor

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Mon. Aug. 22, 2022: Caribbean immigrant Leon “Rocky” Edwards has made history.

Jamaican botn Edwards shocked the MMA world Saturday night when he beat Kamaru Usman of Nigeria in the UFC 278 main event to win the welterweight belt in Salt Lake City, Utah and become a UFC champ.

With a head kick in the final round of a fight he was losing handily, Edwards knocked out Usman to win at the Vivint Arena. The finish came at 4 minutes, 4 seconds of the fifth round, making it the fourth-latest finish in a UFC title fight.

Edwards snapped Usman’s 15-fight UFC winning streak, which was one off Anderson Silva’s UFC record. It was one of the most stunning knockouts in the history of the sport. Usman was considered the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world.

Edwards is also the second England-based athlete to do so. An emotional Edwards, speaking with commentator Joe Rogan immediately after the fight, declared: “I was born in Jamaica with nothing. I lived in a wooden shed with a zinc roof. Look at me now!”

Edwards, who celebrates his 31st birthday on August 25th, was born in Kingston and lived with his parents and his brother in a one-room house. Growing up, he was surrounded by crime, and his father was involved in what the fighter has described as “questionable activities.”

He moved to the Aston area of Birmingham, England at age nine, and his father was shot and killed in a nightclub in London when Edwards was thirteen.

After the tragedy, he would become involved in criminal activity such as drug dealing, street fighting, and knife possession along with his social circle, but was able to get out of the lifestyle at age 17 when his mother got him to join a mixed martial arts (MMA) club.

More than a decade later, on Saturday night (August 20), Edwards started well in the long-awaited title fight at UFC 278 in Salt Lake City, but Usman dominated the middle three rounds to put himself on course for a decision victory.

Out of nowhere, Edwards feinted a jab before slamming a kick into the side of Usman’s head, flooring one of the most dominant champions the UFC has ever had and surprising everyone in the Vivint Arena.

In winning Edwards has also become only the second British fighter to win a UFC title.

The Best Cricket Players To Represent The West Indies

Black Immigrant Daily News

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Tues. Aug. 23, 2022: The region of the West Indies has been home to some of the best cricket players to grace the sport. The West Indies is special in that it is a federation made up of a fairly large number of nations, which come together to compete with cricket’s main contenders in each of the sport’s different formats.

While the West Indies may not have the best-looking record compared to other teams in world cricket, there is no doubt that the region has bred some of the most iconic players to play the game. We asked Alex Goldstein, a betting expert who manages the well-respected bookmaker comparison website mybettingsites.com/ca, who he felt the best cricketers from the West Indies were:

Best Cricket Players to Play for the West Indies

Chris GayleBrian LaraViv Richards

1. Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle is one of the most influential cricket players to have picked up a bat and ball. The Jamaican, who has played international cricket for the West Indies since 1999 is known for his destructive batting, and his powerful aura that has made the West Indies, at times, a fearful prospect of facing.

Gayle has set plenty of records in the game. He is the most capped West Indies player of all time, and he is the only player to score a triplet of centuries, a triple hundred in Tests, a double hundred in ODI, and a hundred in T20Is.

Having represented the Kolkatta Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Punjab Kings, and numerous other cricketing franchises. Technically, Gayle still offers his services to the Windies but is mostly utilized for limited overs games.

2. Brian Lara

Hailing from Santa Cruz, Trinidad and Tobago, The Honourable Brian Lara is the next man to make the list of best Windies cricket players. Brian Lara has managed to top test cricket batting rankings on several occasions and holds cricketing records, including the highest individual score in first-class cricket with 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham at Edgbaston in 1994.

Brian Lara was so influential in the game of cricket, that six video games were released, with his name as part of the title of the game. Brain Lara Cricket, through to Brian Lara Pressure Play was a series of cricket video games produced by Codemasters. When your name is added to the name of a sport on a video game, you know you’re an influential figure within a game.

Having been dubbed the Michael Jordan of cricket by then-US president Barrack Obama, the impact Brian Lara has had on the game of cricket is tangible, and it is why he is largely considered one of the best cricketers to don the maroon of the West Indies.

3. Viv Richards

The next entry on the list is The Honourable Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards, better known as King Viv. Smokin Joe, another nickname for the Antiguan legend, made his test debut in 1974, and in the years between 1976 and 1983 was largely considered the greatest batsman at the time.

Having been knighted for his contributions for the game of cricket, and voted as Wisden’s five cricketers of the century, there are few that inspire as much pride as King Viv for those who support the West Indies on the international level.

Viv’s explosive batting record, and countless honors mean that he is one of the most lauded cricket players of all time, despite not being active for decades.

Caribbean Immigrant Fighter For UFC 278 Main Event

Black Immigrant Daily News

By NAN Sports Editor

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Aug. 19, 2022: Caribbean immigrant fighter Leon “Rocky” Edwards will face Kamaru Usman of Nigeria in Saturday’s UFC 278 main event for the welterweight belt in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Edwards, who was born in Jamaica, believes this is the opportune time to fight Usman, who is coming off a torrid, three-fight year in 2021.

“Now is the perfect time,” Edwards (19-3-1) said Thursday. “He’s been in so many wars. He’s been hurt by Colby, hurt by Gilbert. His body is showing that. I’m fresher, I’m bigger, and I’m excited to prove to the world that I’m number one.”

The UFC 278 match-up is a rematch from December of 2015, which was a unanimous decision victory for Usman (20-1).

Edwards has not tasted defeat since, winning his last nine bouts. Yet that loss still drives him, and this finally marks the chance to redeem himself–as well as win his first-ever UFC championship.

“I hate the feeling of losing,” Edwards told Sports Illustrated. “I still hate that loss. Kamaru getting that decision over me has driven me in each fight. It’s a feeling I remember. I think about it every time I train. It’s been a long, hard road of almost seven years to get here. It’s an amazing feeling. I’m happy, I’m grateful, and I’m fully prepared. This is my time.”

If Usman wins, he will extend his UFC win streak to 16, tying the legendary Anderson Silva.

But Edwards is confident: “I’ve overcome so many obstacles to get here, from being born in Jamaica to now fighting for the UFC world title. I know who I am. I’m going out there Saturday to perform, and God willing, I’ll get the victory,” he added.

UFC 280 In Abu Dhabi: Caribbean American Aljamain Sterling Vs. T.J. Dillashaw Added To The Card

Black Immigrant Daily News

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Weds. Aug. 10, 2022: Current Caribbean American bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling will make his second title defense against former champ T.J. Dillashaw on October 22nd. The fight was initially scheduled at UFC 279 (September 10th), but a rearranged schedule has pushed the bout to an already talent-filled Abu Dhabi card.

Sterling (17-4 MMA, 13-4 UFC) has been the epitome of the term ‘champion spirit,’ after a lackluster 2-3 UFC record between 2016/17, the New York native took a U-turn in the octagon and ascended to the top of the 135l division. Controversially, Sterling obtained the UFC bantamweight title when Petr Yan was disqualified for landing an illegal strike. A UFC title changed hands for the first time in the company’s history because of a DQ.

“Everything I worked for to this point, and to have the fight go like that,” Sterling commented post-fight. “I thought the fight was very close; I thought I was down two rounds. That’s not the way I wanted to win. That’s not the way I envisioned this. I just took the belt off.”

Recurring neck problems stopped Sterling from giving Yan his immediate rematch. Yan defeated Cory Sandhagen at UFC 267 for an interim title, thus, creating a guaranteed meeting and rematch with Sterling.

Despite overwhelming hate and criticism for obtaining the championship via DQ, Sterling silenced his doubters at UFC 273 on April 9, as “The Funk Master” earned a split-decision win over Yan to become the undisputed bantamweight champion.

Sterling is now riding a 7-fight win streak that has remained unblemished since 2018. Prior to his first title opportunity versus Yan, Sterling claimed a first-round submission stoppage over Sandhagen. Other victims of “The Funk Master” include Pedro Munhoz, Cody Stamann, Jimmie Rivera, and Brett Johns.

The Empire State will fully support their local talent, as the Uniondale-born-and-raised fighter resident already owns the favorable betting position at sportsbooks across the sports betting capital of America. BetRivers sportsbook, New York, is supplying -155 odds on Sterling, with a comeback on Dillashaw at +130.

Public bettors have, however, shifted the opening line on Sterling, which was -220. Is this an indication of what’s to come? Or have the sharp bettors hammered a plus-money line on Dillashaw that’s too tempting to pass up?

Dillashaw (21-3 MMA, 13-3 UFC) is the former two-time bantamweight champion. Successes over Renan Baráo in 2014 and Cody Garbrandt in 2018 were Dillashaw’s championship-winning moments, but a failed drug test would temporarily remove him from the sport.

A split-decision win over Sandhagen in July 2021 was Dillashaw’s returning fight after his two-year USADA suspension. With a promised title opportunity presented with his win over Sandhagen, Dillashaw has remained on the sidelines for another year and has finally received his chance to become the first-ever three-time UFC bantamweight champion.

Sterling took to his social media with the following comment: “Someone will be humbled! I will make the Iron Sheikie baby proud with a camel clutch! I break your back, then suplex you! There is no escape now, jabroni!”

UFC 280 takes place at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi; as always, the main card festivities will commence on PPV after the preliminary cards have aired on ESPN, ESPN+, and UFC Fight Pass.

Eleven fights have been made official for the UFC 280 main card and prelims; the excitement surrounding this card has been electric due to the household names that are scheduled to compete.

In the evening’s main event, Charles Oliveira will compete against Islam Makhachev for the vacant lightweight championship. Sterling and Dillashaw will take center stage for the co-main event, and top-ranked welterweight contenders Sean Brady and Belal Muhammad will lead the show before the marquee championship bouts take place.

In addition, famous up-and-coming star Sean O’Malley will face Petr Yan, a bantamweight war that will likely present the next championship contender for either Sterling or Dillashaw.

What Do We Know About The 2023 Caribbean World Series?

Black Immigrant Daily News

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Weds. July 27, 2022: The Caribbean World Series, Latin America’s biggest tournament for professional baseball, returns in February 2023. After the Dominican Republic hosted the series in 2022, next year’s event will take place in Venezuela in two stadiums, the Forum Stadium in La Guaira and the University Stadium in Caracas. Two new countries will join the tournament, Cuba and Curaçao, bringing the total number of teams in the 2023 Caribbean Series to eight.

What Do We Know?

The 2023 Caribbean World Series will be made up of the winter baseball champions of Mexico, Puerto Rico, Panama, Cuba, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela. Even though Curaçao doesn’t have an active winter league, Venezuela extended the invitation to the Dutch Caribbean island. Curaçao is an exciting addition, considering the country has many talented players who play for teams in the United States, such as Jurickson Profar, who plays for the MLB’s San Diego Padres.

50 percent wow, 50 percent ouch, 100 percent effort. pic.twitter.com/Yjr0L7hFHw

— San Diego Padres (@Padres) July 21, 2021

The 2023 event will mark the first time the Caribbean World Series has featured eight teams, nearly 75-years after Venezuelan baseball entrepreneurs Pablo Morales and Oscar Prieto Ortiz founded it. Cuba has won the tournament several times but lost its spot between 1960 and 2014 and again in 2020.

In 2022, Caimanes de Barranquilla of the Colombian League won the tournament, and the series’ Most Valuable Player (MVP) was named Caimanes infielder Reynaldo Rodríguez. Two years before, Colombia made its first-ever appearance in the series, replacing Cuba, which has regained its spot in next year’s event. The Toros del Este of the Dominican League won the 2020 tournament.

Hype and Culture

One of the most important elements of the Caribbean Series is its entertainment value. Fans don’t just go for the game itself, but for the atmosphere and to spend time with friends and family. Mike Brito, a Cuban-American baseball scout who spent nearly 45 years with the Los Angeles Dodgers and signed Fernando Valenzuela, once said that the Caribbean Series is the most fun out of all the World Series.

If you can’t attend any games, there are still ways to enjoy the tournament, especially since technology has enabled us to follow live action and react to different events in real-time. By following social media accounts like ESPN Caribbean, you’ll be surprised by how many updates you get about the 2023 Caribbean World Series. You can also go to one of the stadiums on game day if you live by them, even if you don’t have tickets, and soak up the atmosphere. Tickets or no tickets, just being outside the stadium will make for a memorable experience.

Additionally, in previous years, international fans have also used online sportsbooks to bet on the tournament. That’s because some sportsbooks offer live betting odds, which allow people to place bets during games, making them feel part of the action. Apart from the Caribbean Series, baseball, in general, is a trending sport in the online gambling world (football and hockey are big, too), so many platforms offer betting guides and insights into how to wager on everything from MLB games to the KBO League.

For the first time, the 2023 Caribbean World Series will be composed of eight teams after Cuba regained its spot and Venezuela invited Curaçao. The tournament always brings fun and excitement, but next year is going to be in a category of its own.
