US Denies Existence of Draft Travel Ban List Amid CARICOM Concerns

News Americas, New York, NY, March 18, 2025: The United States has denied the existence of a draft travel ban list, following concerns raised by several Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nations over reports suggesting potential travel restrictions.

US Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce dismissed the claims, stating, “There is no list. What people have been looking at in recent days is not something that exists here or is being acted on.” She clarified that there is an ongoing review under President Trump’s executive order regarding visa policies and national security.

The New York Times had reported that six Caribbean nations—St. Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, Cuba, and Haiti—were included in a proposed list of countries facing possible travel restrictions. The reported proposal categorized countries into three levels: a “red” list barring entry, an “orange” list imposing restrictions, and a “yellow” list allowing 60 days for compliance.

In response, Antigua and Barbuda formally requested clarification from the US via a diplomatic note, expressing “deep concern” and stating that the government had received no prior notice regarding such a list. Other CARICOM nations, including St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, and St. Lucia, have also sought official clarification.

These nations emphasized their commitment to tightening their Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programs, working closely with the US to prevent misuse by criminals. Antigua and Barbuda reaffirmed that all applicants undergo rigorous screening, including INTERPOL vetting, to uphold the program’s integrity.

A New Luxury Hotel Is Coming To The Caribbean

The renowned Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group is set to expand its presence in the Caribbean with the opening of Mandarin Oriental Esencia, Puerto Rico on the island’s southwestern coast at Boquerón Bay in Cabo Rojo. The luxury resort and branded residences will be the group’s third property in the region.

Part of Esencia, a new cosmopolitan coastal community developed by Reuben Brothers and Three Rules Capital, the resort will immerse guests and residents in the natural beauty of Puerto Rico’s pristine beaches, protected mangroves, and scenic lagoons. Boquerón Bay, known for its breathtaking coastline, vibrant gastronomy, and diverse wellness activities, provides an idyllic setting for the new development.

Montserrat Premier Clarifies Land Ownership Rules After Jeff Bezos’ Visit

News Americas, New York, NY, February 3, 2025:Montserrat’s Premier Reuben Meade has addressed concerns regarding land ownership in the British Caribbean territory following the recent visit of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who was spotted on the island aboard his luxury superyacht, Koru.

During a United Alliance town hall meeting in Salem on January 10, a community member raised questions about Bezos’ presence in Montserrat and whether the billionaire might be considering land purchases or investments on the island.

In response, Premier Meade clarified that foreign nationals cannot buy property in Montserrat without government approval. “He cannot buy property in Montserrat unless the government grants an alien land holding license. So, we will know when business is being done,” Meade stated, as reported by Montserrat Focus.

He further emphasized that any foreign investor must register a business or obtain a license, ensuring that all transactions are transparent. “They can’t do anything unless they register a business or seek a license to do business. So, we will know what is happening when the time is right.”

Bezos’ Caribbean Tour Sparks Speculation

Bezos arrived in Montserrat on January 6 aboard Koru, a 417-foot, three-masted sailing yacht built by Oceanco at an estimated cost of $500 million. The Amazon founder has been seen touring various Caribbean destinations, including St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Bart’s.

His visit sparked mixed reactions among Montserratians, with many residents posting photos and videos of his yacht on social media. Some viewed his presence as a potential boost to tourism, with one commenter stating, “Those people on Jeff Bezos’ yacht can share what they’ve seen and learn about our beautiful paradise.”

Others speculated about possible investments, with comments such as “Looking for an island to buy or to invest in?” and “Something might be brewing.” Some even saw it as an opportunity for philanthropic support, suggesting Bezos could contribute to the island’s port or hospital projects.

Premier Meade, however, dismissed speculation, reiterating that Bezos was simply visiting as a tourist. “We’re not going to nosy in a person’s business. He comes here. He comes here as a tourist. He spends money in Montserrat. Thank God he’s spending some money in Montserrat.”

Montserrat is a mountainous island in the Caribbean, part of the Lesser Antilles and a British Overseas Territory. In the 1990s, the Soufrière Hills volcano erupted, causing extensive damage to the southern region and leading to the creation of an exclusion zone. However, the northern part of the island remains largely unaffected, featuring black-sand beaches, coral reefs, rugged cliffs, and scenic shoreline caves, making it a picturesque destination for visitors.

Second US Airline Launches Nonstop Flights To This Caribbean Island

News Americas, New York, NY, February 19, 2025: Dominica has welcomed its second nonstop U.S. carrier with the launch of United Airlines’ direct service from Newark Liberty International Airport to Douglas-Charles Airport. The new route, which began on February 15, enhances accessibility to the Caribbean destination known as the “Nature Island.”

The weekly Saturday flight departs Newark at 9:10 a.m., arriving in Dominica at 2:39 p.m. local time. Return flights leave Dominica at 3:45 p.m., landing in Newark at 7:51 p.m. The route is operated using a Boeing 737-700 aircraft.

To mark the inaugural flight, celebrations were held at both airports, including a gate event in Newark and a ceremonial water cannon salute upon arrival in Dominica.

The launch follows recent upgrades at Douglas-Charles Airport, including a runway expansion, grooving, and terminal improvements to support increased capacity and operational efficiency.

Denise Charles-Pemberton, Dominica’s tourism minister, highlighted the significance of the new service, emphasizing the island’s appeal as a premier eco-tourism and wellness destination featuring volcanic landscapes, lush forests, waterfalls, and world-class diving.

With its rich cultural heritage, vibrant festivals, and adventure opportunities like hiking and sea kayaking, Dominica continues to position itself as a must-visit destination in the Caribbean.
