‘When you win, you win,’ says young fish farmer Loop Jamaica

The St Catherine-based ‘Williams Farm’ has been putting fresh, locally grown food on the tables of Jamaicans for generations.

Now its youngest proprietor, Trey Williams, has decided to carve out his niche in the family business by focusing his efforts on tilapia farming.

Under the keen maintenance of the 26-year-old, the family’s farm boasts 13 one-acre fishponds, each containing about 15,000 tilapia, some of different breeds.

Williams’ responsibilities include feeding the fish twice each day and seeing to the upkeep of the ponds, to prevent overcrowding and pest infestation before reaping day.

Speaking with JIS News, the third-generation farmer explained that the business was started by his grandfather who passed it on to his father and so, “I grew up in farming on a whole”.

He is a past student of St Jago High School, where he showed interest in business subjects, but did not know just what his future would entail.

By the time he turned 20, “I was into the chicken coop [side of the business] with grandma and then she said: ‘Why don’t you go and invest some of your money in the fish farm with your dad and see if you can help the business to grow more?’.”

He reluctantly took that advice. “I was sceptical about it at first, but she really convinced me and this has been my thing ever since. I took my time and fell in love with it,” he reflects.

Tilapia, which is a freshwater fish that inhabits shallow streams, ponds, rivers, and lakes, is versatile and tolerant of different aquaculture environments. It can be farmed in brackish or salt water and in cage systems or ponds, similar to the ones operated by the Williams family.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) have been calling for an increase in tilapia farming to boost local fish production and to relieve the stress on reef fish. There is also a growing domestic demand for the freshwater delight.

Backed by his own successes, Williams is encouraging others, particularly youngsters, to get involved in the venture, deeming it a ‘good investment’ with guaranteed returns.

“Fish is like chicken… if fish is for sale, somebody is going to want to buy fish,” he argued.

“It takes a lot of resources, but if you can get it started, I would tell you to do it,” Mr. Williams adds.

He admitted that there are a few limitations that come with the practice.

“Some time last year, we ended up losing five ponds of fish because of the rain,” he lamented.

Those ponds are now restored, thanks in part to the NFA, which provided fish and feed. He also received an award from the organisation on Fisherman’s Day, recognising him as a young fish farmer.

Overall, the outgoing young man said of his main economic activity that “when you win, you win”, and noted that more than 4,000 pounds of tilapia can be harvested in one catch.

This is sold to higglers who journey from far, having heard the good news of the Williams family and, of course, the deliciousness and viability of tilapia.

Williams disclosed that there are plans to expand the family farm, which should include more ponds and additional ways to earn a living from the increasingly popular and in-demand fish.

On its website, the Met Office said periods of rain and/or showers of varying intensities have been observed from early this morning. It said this is due to a combination of the inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and a low-level trough.

There is also a 70 per cent chance of thunderstorms. Heavy downpours could produce accumulations in excess of 25 millimetres.

It said street/flash flooding and localised ponding are also likely in heavy downpours. Gusty winds in excess of 55 kilometres/hour may be experienced in the area of showers/thunderstorms.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) to strengthen procedures that ensure the safety, quality and efficacy of medicines in the Region.

Dr. Didacus Jules, Director General of the OECS and Dr. Joy St. John, Executive Director of CARPHA were both present for the official signing which took place on Thursday July 28th, 2022, at the OECS Commission in Castries, Saint Lucia.

The MOU formalises a long-standing relationship between the OECS Pooled Procurement Service (PPS) and CARPHA.

The Medicines Quality Control and Surveillance Department (MQCSD) and the Caribbean Regulatory System (CRS) are the departments responsible for guiding the procurement, testing, registration and monitoring of medicines at CARPHA.

The main aims of the agreement are to strengthen the approval processes of medicines procured through the OECS/PPS, by the CRS and to reaffirm the long-standing relationship with the MQCSD.

Speaking at the Ceremony Dr. Jules stated that the MOU further strengthens the already excellent working relationship between the two organisations that have a shared commitment to the needs of the region (OECS/Wider Caribbean) especially in healthcare delivery.

According to Dr. Jules, ‘’The formalisation of this relationship with an MOU will strengthen the trust of the Member States in the medicines used in our public health systems within Member States of the OECS and CARPHA. I consider the relationship with CARPHA and the OECS to be an exemplar of intra-regional collaboration that has evolved significantly since the pandemic. We have walked every step of this perilous journey together, clasping hands tighter whenever the going went rougher.’’

In her remarks, Dr. St John stated that the agreement would strengthen the relationship between the two agencies by, “supporting and improving access to quality assured medicines, and the monitoring of their safety, quality and efficacy in the OECS, other CARPHA Member States and in the global community.”

She noted the challenges that may be faced by small markets like those in the Caribbean and commented that, “The OECS’ procurement service leads the Region in its approach to pooled procurement to optimise economies of scale to tackle this obstacle.  To this end, CARPHA is pleased to strengthen this work at a technical level.”

Dr. St John concluded by noting the unique nature of the collaboration, giving CARPHA’s commitment to sustaining the partnership and commending the relevant stakeholders for their contribution.

This agreement between the OECS/PPS and CARPHA will enable the OECS citizens to be confident that medicines procured for use in the Region are of the highest standards and quality.

The OECS/PPS is expected to begin the procurement of medicines approved by the CRS in 2024.

CARPHA and the OECS are confident that this agreement will be fruitful as both agencies continue to serve the citizens of the OECS and the wider Caribbean.

Sagicor Investments Jamaica Limited is the lead arranger and broker for the offer, which is scheduled to open on August 12, 2022.

Headquartered in Kingston, the award-winning online learning platform offers personalised digital education and training solutions for governments, businesses, and individuals across the Caribbean.

Clients benefit from e-learning courses, online training, instructional design services, and expert tutors and trainers.

“The IPO funds raised will be used to capitalise on long-standing strategic growth identified by investing in next-generation learning content for new and existing markets as well as investing in adaptive learning technology using machine learning and artificial intelligence ideas to personalize learning,” stated Ricardo Allen, President and CEO of One on One.

“We are confident that we have a team with the necessary capabilities, and we are in the process of expanding our capacity to maximize the potential that the market for online learning has to offer. We believe e-learning runs on One on One.”

Theola Moore Bruce, Manager, Capital Markets of Sagicor Investments said the team is excited to throw its support behind One on One.

“At Sagicor Investments we are at an exciting stage in the relationship with One on One that we established years ago, and it is an honour for us to be a part of this milestone for the company as the lead arranger and broker in its IPO”, said Moore Bruce.

“Allen has shown that he is committed to developing our nation through education and training.
