Top performers’ teachers overjoyed but not surprised Loop Barbados

The teachers who stand proudly behind this year’s Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination’s top performing girl and boy were “surprised but not surprised” with their results.

Loop delivered the news unknowingly to the principal and teacher of Renelle Best over at St Gabriel’s Primary School. But it was a joy to watch as J4 teacher Susanna Gall held her chest and congratulated her student saying that she deserves it.

Moving her hand between her chest and her mask as she seemingly fought to catch her breath with not only the fact that Renelle got a raw score of 100 in both Mathematics and English, it was a fresh set of breathlessness when she processed that Renelle is the overall top student on the island for this year’s sitting.

Gall said:

“The words are…not coming. I am indeed speechless in a positive way.

“I am extremely happy for her cause she has consistently worked at that excellent peak… So I’m excited but still not surprised!”

Meanwhile, over in St George at St George Primary, a quiet and more composed Kathy-Ann Spencer said, “I’m so proud of him…I did not expect this, but I’m not surprised because he has been working consistently well throughout the two years that I taught him and I know that he was working well even before he came to me in Class 3. Sometimes we tend to forget the teachers who taught these children when they are younger but that preparation and that standard of excellence began from way down in Infants.”

San Francique home undermined by WASA leak

ATTORNEY Prakash Ramadhar is seeking help for members of the Narine family, whose house at Pluck Road/Santa Cecelia Trace, San Francique, was damaged by a nearby landslip.

Ramadhar sent a pre-action protocol letter to the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) chairman Ravindra Nanga on Saturday. A copy of the letter was also sent to the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs on the same day.

Speaking to the media outside the Narines’ house on Tuesday, Ramadhar said water from a nearby WASA line had started to gush into their property again and further undermine it. The Narines have been experiencing this problem since last February.

“We have been concerned about that. The viability of the home is a real concern.”

He claimed WASA had not taken any responsibility.

Ramadhar said there is always leakage into the Narines’ property from the line whenever there is water in it, and that happened most recently on August 6.

He was concerned about efforts by the Works and Transport Ministry to have the house classified as a ruinous structure.

According to Section 176 of the Municipal Corporations Act, an engineer assigned to a local government corporation can classify a structure as unfit for use or occupation. Such structures are defined as ruinous. The owners of such structures can subsequently be directed to demolish, secure, repair or rebuild part or all of the structure.

Referring to copies of letters between the Works and Transport Ministry, Rural Development and Local Government Ministry and the Siparia Regional Corporation, Ramadhar said the corporation’s engineer assessed the property and determined it was not a ruinous structure.

Ramadhar believed the Works and Transport Ministry should have been speaking with the Narines with respect to either helping to repair their home or having them properly compensated if they have to move.

But, he said, “They (Works and Transport Ministry) attempted to do something under the guise of law which I consider to be dishonourable.”

Ramadhar argued that the ministry is liable for the damage to the Narines’ home because it did not maintain the nearby road properly. He claimed the ministry has adopted a similar position elsewhere.

As Ramadhar spoke, vehicles tried to pass behind him along the road.

“Even a 4×4 (pickup) is having trouble to pass,” he said.

Ramadhar promised to represent the Narines legally in this matter “as far as it goes.”

The pre-action protocol letter to WASA invites the authority to inform Ramadhar within 14 days of its plans to address the Narines’ concerns about the damage to their property.

Ramadhar said, “We want to ensure that this family and many others who are in this situation understand that the law protects them, and the liability for those who do not live up to their legal responsibility remains.”

Asked about the best outcome for the Narines, Ramadhar said it would be difficult to restore their home to its former state.

Should WASA accept responsibility for the damage to the property caused by the water line, Ramadhar said they would negotiate with WASA .

Those talks would involve giving the Narines adequate compensation either to repair their home or to relocate.

Emma Narine Mohammed related the continuing stress the family endures because of the landslip and leaking water line.

The house is owned by Mohammed’s parents, Ramhit and Marilyn Narine. Mohammed said 43 years ago, her parents bought the land which the house occupies. The family’s first house was built there in 1984 and was rebuilt in 2015.

Mohammed, her parents, her husband Cedric, her sister, her sister’s husband and their three children currently live in the house.

“It’s horrible only when there is a WASA leak because you can’t sleep.”

Mohammed said the sound of water gushing into their property keeps family members awake morning and night.

“Water causes damages and we don’t know with that kind of water coming down there, if it (house) could just drop down.”

She was concerned for the safety of her sister’s family, who live downstairs.

“The house could drop down on them and they could end up dying.”

Mixed views as Scarborough market reopens

A clean facility greeted vendors as the gates of the Scarborough market reopened after extensive sanitisation was completed.

On July 27, the THA Division of Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment and Sustainable Development said the market would be closed for sanitisation until August 1.

The division later said the sanitisation process would take more time.

Meanwhile, some of the vendors unofficially used spaces at the nearby Victor E Bruce Financial Complex carpark.

On Tuesday, they were allowed back into the market.

When Newsday visited, there was a limited number of vendors inside.

Those inside were anxious to be back.

Plant vendor Lyndon Beckes said: “I feel good. I mean, some of my plants have died, but I feel good because I am back out to service the needs of my clientele.”

Baker and restaurateur Kolonji James said: “I am extremely happy – it has been long overdue. It’s a good thing, it is a nice thing after losing so much business for the last few weeks. There is so much that one can really do to prevent infestations.

“In some parts of the world, they clean as you go, it is really sad that it had to reach this extent, because a lot of business was lost. So I am extremely happy to be back.”

Those outside had a different view. They voiced their displeasure, saying there was a lack of communication.

Vendor Lydia Joseph said: “We don’t even know what’s going on. Aren’t we entitled to know what’s going on?

“Nobody came to us and tell us anything. A text was sent out via WhatsApp, but 90 per cent of the older women here do not have that kind of phone. So just for professionalism or courtesy, we think somebody should come and talk to us.”

Joseph said over the past 16 days, vendors have been in the market carpark, but during that time no official has come and spoken to them.

“Yesterday (Monday) the administrator passed and whispered to us, ‘We’re opening the market tomorrow.’

“But nobody has really told us anything about what is going on. We need somebody to come out here and talk to us like we are human beings. We need to negotiate, because we pay $300 per day.”

She said they continue to get unofficial reports.

“Through the grapevine we’re hearing that we’re going in today, but we have to come out again on Saturday.

“They cannot do that. We don’t want to go in there and then again have to move all the stuff out here again, We think it’s not fair.

“We are women, 90 per cent of the market vendors are women, and we have to keep moving these (goods).

“They are saying that the market would be cleaned every weekend. We can’t afford that.”

Another vendor, Jennifer Noel-Since, shared similar concerns.

“Since I’ve been working here, this is one of the worst. When they are doing this, I think they’re supposed to come to us, as the vendors, and tell us why they’re doing what they’re doing.”

She is ready to discuss compensation.

“We have to pay for these tents. It is about $3,000-plus now I have to pay for this tent for the days that I am out here. So you make the money, but then they go back to these. All we’re saying is that while we’re outside, provide us with the tents. Why didn’t they provide that for us? Are they prepared to help us pay for these tents?

“I want them to come so we can dialogue.”

Secretary of the division Nathisha Charles-Pantin said the division would respond via a press release.

Albert-Poyotte Says No Need For Rush To Get e-Passports – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

Home Affairs Minister Dr. Virginia Albert-Poyotte has advised citizens that there’s no need to rush to obtain Saint Lucia’s new e-passports, as existing travel documents are due for renewal after expiry.

“They can use the passport they have now until it expires. They can travel on it,” the Babonneau MP told reporters on Tuesday on the sidelines of a meeting of parliament.

But she explained that some people seem not to have received the message.

“I am hoping that this time they get it clear that there’s no need to rush to get the e-passports because they can use their machine-readable passport until it expires,” Albert-Poyotte stated.

She asserted that thousands of passports do not expire in the same week or on the same day.

“it’s just a few and sometimes they come in the morning and you see a long line, but by before midday, the line is back to normal. It is something that can be managed,” Albert-Poyotte told reporters.

“We are getting rumours of some malpractices,” she said in response to a question regarding people selling spaces in the queue at the Immigration Department.

“I do not want to conclude it as facts, but we know some people are using all kinds of tricks. There are some people I understood who are getting some false travel itinerary to indicate that they have to travel urgently and after they have gotten their passport they cancel their travel,” Albert-Poyotte noted.

In this regard, the Minister advised that Saint Lucians should not engage in such devious behaviour.

“We are trying out best to help them and therefore they should stop,” Albert-Poyotte declared.

She said if people are selling spots in queues, it’s part of the malpractices and tricks giving the impression that the lines at the Immigration Department are extremely long.

“Everybody who needed their passport to travel so far has not complained that they did not get their passports,” she stated.
