Minister for Infrastructure, Ports, Transport, Physical Development and Urban Renewal, Hon. Stephenson King, during a sitting of the House of Assembly, updated the nation on the progress of the Millennium Highway and West Coast Road Reconstruction Project.

The project will rehabilitate 14.2 km of existing roads along with associated drainage, retaining structures, bridge replacements, road realignment and roundabout construction. Expected outcomes include increased efficiency and road safety.

Minister King explained that the Ministry of Infrastructure has instituted subcomponents aimed at meeting project deadlines.

“Subcomponent one will focus on the construction of the roundabout while maintaining the quality requirements of the embankment fill. Subcomponent two will focus on the full depth reclamation of the existing road pavement and its reconstruction. Subcomponent three will take into consideration ancillary works that include drainage, major culverts, sidewalks and other road fixtures for that new bridge.

“The public will notice work on the roundabout between the new Cul de Sac bridge and the Commode Hill,” he continued. “This is to construct the new approach road and embankment of the new bridge which is due for completion in August.”

The Millennium Highway and West Coast Road Reconstruction Project is funded by the United Kingdom Caribbean Infrastructure Fund (UK-CIF), and the Government of Saint Lucia. The project funding is managed through the Caribbean Development Bank CDB.

El Servicio Nacional de Meteorología en San Juan emitió una advertencia de calor para la mayoría de las áreas bajas en Puerto Rico debido a los índices de calor de 102 a 111 grados, con los índices de calor más altos en la costa Norte y justo tierra adentro. La misma estará vigente desde las 10 AM hasta las 4 PM AST del día de hoy.

Las temperaturas máximas actuales fluctuarán desde los bajos 90s en áreas bajas a altos 70s en las montañas más altas. Una tendencia más seca comenzará esta noche, pero el calor excesivo continuará durante la semana.

Excepto por condiciones marítimas localmente peligrosas generadas por la actividad de aguaceros y tronadas a través de las aguas locales, el oleaje permanecerá a menos de 4 pies y vientos generalmente a menos de 15 nudos. La mayoría de las playas orientadas hacia el Norte, este y Sureste tienen un riesgo moderado de corrientes marinas.

Además, la agencia informó que la mejor humedad se encuentra detrás de la onda y se extenderá a través de las islas durante el día. Aguaceros se tornarán más frecuentes a través del Este de Puerto Rico durante horas de la mañana, luego aguaceros y tronadas pasarán por toda la isla y se tornarán más fuertes en el Oeste de Puerto Rico.

Cantidades de lluvia de hasta 2 pulgadas con los aguaceros y tronadas más fuertes son posibles, con posibles áreas localizadas de hasta 4 pulgadas. Vientos se tornarán del Sureste a Sur con la influencia de la brisa marina y hasta 15 mph con ráfagas más fuertes en la brisa marina y tronadas.

The Windward Islands versus Leeward Islands opening match of the Cricket West Indies Under-19 Cricket Championship seems to be heading for a draw at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex here in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

At the close of play on yesterday’s second day of the 3-day match, the scores were: The Windward Islands 209 (Captain Akeem Auguste 80, Tarique Edward 65, Noel Leo 28, Nathan Edward 5-30), and 72-0 (Ethan Gibson 36 not out, Stephen Pascal 27 not out(, the Leeward Islands 284 (Nathen Edward 82, Michael Greaves 60, Malique Walsh 38, Joel Andrew 33, Tarique Edward 8-75).

The match will be continuing from 10.00 a. m today.

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves condemned China’s recent military drills near Taiwan, during a meeting on Thursday with Taiwan’s Premier Su Tseng-chang

According to a report by Taiwan News, the Prime Minister discussed a number of issues during his meeting with Premier Su, including bilateral ties, the leadership of President Tsai Ing-wen, and opposition to the recent actions of the Chinese Communist Party.

The Taiwanese Premier thanked Prime Minister Gonsalves for speaking out for Taiwan at the United Nations and for supporting Taiwan’s international participation. The Premier said he hoped the bilateral friendship would last forever.

Dr. Gonsalves said his country was preparing a written statement  with other diplomatic allies of Taiwan, which condemns China’s unreasonable and disproportionate actions. The statement is expected to be published at the United Nations today.

The Prime Minister said the actions of the Chinese Communist Party violate international law and are not in line with international morality. He stressed that any issues or differences should be resolved through civilized and peaceful dialogue and not with threats of war. He added that the Chinese Communist Party’s threat to Taiwan is unacceptable

Dr. Gonsalves said that St Vincent and the Grenadines supports Taiwan in its efforts to defend itself. He commended Taiwan for not allowing China to interfere in its internal affairs and noted that the Taiwanese have shown great determination in defending their home in the face of military threats.

Prime Minister Gonsalves and his delegation are scheduled to leave Taiwan today, after meeting with top government officials over the past five days.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves met today with the Chairman, President and Management team of the Taiwan Overseas Investment & Development Corporation (OIDC).

The meeting is reported to have been a successful one and produced significant benefits for St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Employees no longer have an excuse for horror stories about employers not paying in contributions on their behalf to the National Insurance Scheme (NIS).

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the National Insurance Board Kim Tudor, a portal has been in place and in operation for two years now for employees to check on their own on the NIS website.

She said that persons who have NIS deductions taken from their pay can see whether their employers are diligently paying in the monies to ensure their social safety net is intact.

Speaking during a press conference on Saturday at the NIS Culloden Road headquarters, she said:

“You can see all your contributions, you can see all the contributions from every employer that you have ever worked for…

“What we have been doing over the last couple of years is all new registrants who come to register for NIS register for the portal at the same time. If you go on the NIS website, just click on the portal.”
