Hurricane devastation and how to prepare Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Cayman Compass

Hearing about a tropical storm or hurricane forecast is one thing; living through it, however, is an entirely different matter. As a result, each person is encouraged to learn more about hurricanes and their impacts, preferably before they happen so that they can make adequate preparations. The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, which outlines various categories of hurricanes, is helpful in this regard.

The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale

According to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, hurricane intensities are categorised from 1 to 5, mostly based on maximum sustained winds at any time. For example, a category 1 hurricane like Hurricane Danielle became a hurricane once Danielle exceeded 73 mph, as explained in the below video.

Notwithstanding the above, general illustration of damage, the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is not intended to predict absolutely the impacts of maximum sustained winds across different categories.

In fact, the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale has limitations. For example, the actual damage Cayman may experience could be influenced by many factors. Some of these are:

the age of relevant structuresbuilding codes applicable to such structures (and whether or not they are enforced)how slowly the system is moving or sits over you (like Hurricane Ivan, which pounded the Cayman Islands for over 24 hours in September 2004)flooding, storm surge and other factors

How to prepare

Given the social, economic, and environmental devastation caused by Hurricane Ivan in September 2004 (September is the historical peak of the hurricane season) and the potential for this to happen again, it is important for communities and businesses to have proper disaster and business continuity plans in place, far in advance of a threat.

In addition, it is critical for communities to establish community emergency response teams (CERT), who are members of each community trained by Hazard Management Cayman Islands (HCMI). (If you are not familiar with the CERT programme, you can learn more on HCMI’s website at https://www.caymanprepared.gov.ky/cert. )

Ideally, you should also get to know the members of the CERT team for your area prior to a disaster as the team will assess the resources in your community before a hurricane and assist HCMI and other emergency responders, post-disaster. To obtain this information, you may contact HCMI at 945-4624 or email them at hmci@gov.ky.

With this knowledge in hand, residents should not, however, get too relaxed or become complacent thinking that all angles are covered. Instead, residents should remain vigilant upon the announcement of a hurricane or tropical storm, stay prepared and test hurricane preparedness plans from time to time, even when there is no threat.

Barack Obama is halfway to an EGOT.

The former president won an Emmy Award on Saturday to go with his two Grammys.

Obama won the best narrator Emmy for his work on the Netflix documentary series, “Our Great National Parks.”

The five-part show, which features national parks from around the globe, is produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, “Higher Ground.”

He was the biggest name in a category full of famous nominees for the award handed out at Saturday night’s Creative Arts Emmys, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, David Attenborough and Lupita Nyong’o.

Barack Obama is the second president to have an Emmy. Dwight D Eisenhower was given a special Emmy Award in 1956.

Barack Obama previously won Grammy Awards for his audiobook reading of two of his memoirs, “The Audacity of Hope” and “A Promised Land.” Michelle Obama won her own Grammy for reading her audiobook in 2020.

EGOT refers to a special category of entertainers who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. To date, 17 people have done it.

The late Chadwick Boseman also won an Emmy for his voice work on Saturday. The “Black Panther” actor won for outstanding character voiceover for the Disney+ and Marvel Studios animated show “What If…?”

On the show, Boseman voiced his “Black Panther” character T’Challa in an alternate universe where he becomes Star-Lord from “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

It was one of the last projects for Boseman, who died in 2020 of colon cancer at age 43.

Ukrainian port city, Kharkiv, comes under Russian shelling Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Russian shelling hit the southern Ukraine port city of Mykolaiv during the night, damaging a medical treatment facility, the city’s mayor said Sunday.

Mykolaiv and its surrounding region have been hit daily for weeks in the conflict. On Saturday, a child was killed and five people were injured in rocket attacks in the region, Governor Vitaliy Kim said. Mykolaiv city mayor Oleksandr Senkevych did not specify whether there were any injuries in the overnight attack, which he said also damaged some residences.

Mykolaiv, on the Southern Bug River about 30 kilometres (20 miles) upstream from the Black Sea, is a significant port and shipbuilding centre.

In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, Russian shelling late Saturday set a large wooden restaurant complex on fire, according to the region’s emergency service. One person was killed and two injured in shelling in the region, governor Oleh Syniehubov said.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, governor of the eastern Donetsk region where Russian forces have been trying to take full control, said four people were killed in shelling on Saturday.

The head of the UN nuclear watchdog said Saturday that the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine was disconnected from its last external power line but was still able to run electricity through a reserve line amid sustained shelling in the area.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Grossi said in a statement that the agency’s experts, who arrived at Zaporizhzhia on Thursday, were told by senior Ukrainian staff that the fourth and last operational line was down. The three others were lost earlier during the conflict.

But the IAEA experts learned that the reserve line linking the facility to a nearby thermal power plant was delivering the electricity the plant generates to the external grid, the statement said. The same reserve line can also provide backup power to the plant if needed, it added.

“We already have a better understanding of the functionality of the reserve power line in connecting the facility to the grid,” Grossi said. “This is crucial information in assessing the overall situation there.”

In addition, the plant’s management informed the IAEA that one reactor was disconnected Saturday afternoon because of grid restrictions. Another reactor is still operating and producing electricity both for cooling and other essential safety functions at the site and for households, factories and others through the grid, the statement said.

The Zaporizhzhia facility, which is Europe’s largest nuclear plant, has been held by Russian forces since early March, but its Ukrainian staff are continuing to operate it.

Vladimir Rogov, the head of the Russia-installed local administration in Enerhodar, the city where the plant is located, was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying there had been no new shelling of the area on Sunday as of midday.
