GUNNED DOWN: Nigel “Bulls” Henry, shot dead outside his Petit Valley home on Sunday morning, is seen in this photo posted to social media. –

POLICE say they have no motive for the murder of Nigel Headley of Upper Simeon Road, Petit Valley.

Headley, 45, who was originally from Beverley Hills, Laventile, was gunned down on Sunday morning at his home.

When Newsday visited the area, his immediate family was too distraught to speak with reporters. Residents and family gathered along the pavement leading to his home. A group of men described Headley as a mentor to young men in the community.

One man who didn’t want to be named said, “He was a good one, never in nothing. He was like a father to plenty people up here.”

A police report said that at around 8.30 am, Headley was standing at the front door of his home when the incident happened.

A relative who was at the back, later told police of hearing rapid gunshots and on checking, found Headley bleeding on the ground and gasping for breath. He died minutes later, before medical help could be reached.

His body was removed to the Forensic Sciences Center in St James for an autopsy. Up to press time, no arrest had been made and investigations are ongoing.

Headley was one of at least three men men murdered over the weekend.

On Saturday, around 1.20 pm, Garvan Burke, Josiah Holder, David Williams, Anton Selmon and another man only identified as Akim, were in a Kia Cerato along Prosperity Lane, Upper Gonzales, Belmont when gunmen opened fire at them.

The five were all shot and later taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital where Williams died while undergoing emergency surgery. The others remain hospitalised, up to press time.

Less than five hours later, Carib Street residents reported seeing an injured man on the road. Police found Sherlock “Bandit” Charles, 42, with several bullet wounds to his body. He died shortly after.

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett has offered condolences to the families of the persons who died as a result of a motor vehicle crash on the Braco main road in Trelawny on Thursday afternoon.

Three persons died and 26 more were otherwise injured in the collision.

The crash involved two buses, one of which was transporting employees of the Ocean Coral Spring Hotel.

On Friday, Bartlett visited the Falmouth Hospital in Trelawny to see those who were admitted following the incident.

The minister has also reached out to the families of those who have been hospitalised, as well as the staff members of the hotel.

Meanwhile, he has suggested that there needs to be a psychosocial approach to dealing with certain motorists, noting that key questions should be asked, such as: “How do our people think?” and “What influences their actions and choices while they are using the road?”

He said the judgment of some motorists is cause for concern, and is a matter that should be seriously examined.

In pointing out that there may be other issues at hand regarding the quality and state of repairs of the roadways, as well as the levels of road signage, Bartlett said “tourism is interested in a holistic approach to the situation on our thoroughfares, and the sector would be willing to fully engage its partners through the Destination Assurance Councils and look at how do we make the use of our roads safer.”

He added that this needs to be done to “assure the destination’s integrity”.

Bartlett has also lamented that safety and security on the nation’s roads “have reached crisis proportion”, adding that the “number of deaths on our highways are now surpassing several other causes of death in the country.”

He called for motorists to be properly trained so they can use the roads in a more responsible way.

Now that he is baptised the Mighty Sparrow says there are songs that he may never sing again.

Sparrow, birth name Slinger Francisco, told Loop News in a brief interview from his home in New York, that he will stop singing some songs.

Birdie, as he is also fondly referred to, is known for a vast catalogue of social commentary calypsoes such as “Federation”, “Education”, and “Jean and Dinah “as well as cheeky double entendre songs such as “Saltfish”, and “Congo Man”, and more sexually explicit songs such as “Bag ah Sugar” and “Mae Mae”.

Sparrow was baptised on Saturday in Brooklyn, New York, by Pastor Claudius Morgan of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

He confirmed the baptism to Loop, stating that his daughter Gina has always encouraged him to do so.

“I always had to get baptised at some point,” the 87-year-old bard known as the Calypso King of the World said.

Stating that he was baptised as a baby, he said he feels very blessed to be able to rededicate his life to God.

Asked if his baptism would change the songs, he sings, Sparrow said he would have to tread very carefully.

“I would personally have to look at it very carefully. Obviously, there are some things, some topics I would not be interested in but there are so many others to sing about,” he said.

Born in Grenada on July 9, Sparrow has won the Trinidad and Tobago Road March and Calypso Monarch titles eight times each.

Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 31, 2022 (SKNIS) — The Ministry of Social Development and Gender Affairs launched its Girls Empowerment Movement and Sisterhood (GEMS) programme on Wednesday (August 31, 2022) under the theme “Girls Under Construction – Building a Firm Foundation for a Stronger Future.”

The launch was marked by a ceremony at the Lodge Community Centre attended by government officials, His Excellency Michael Lin, Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), mentors, and the young people to be mentored.

Director of Gender Affairs, Virgil Jeffers, said that the programme’s design enhances the development of young girls. It also provides a suitable forum that espouses the benefits of a positive self-image, responsible personal conduct and respect for self and others.

“This programme will seek to provide a structured and trusting relationship that brings … the mentees together with caring and accountable females who offer guidance, support and encouragement aimed at developing your competencies, self-esteem and character,” he stated at the opening ceremony.

Mr. Jeffers added that statistics often testify to the success of mentorship programmes. Thus, this is a welcomed effort to positively intervene in the lives of at-risk teenagers. He saluted the mentors for volunteering their time, experience and service.

“It’s people like you who help me to believe that children who grow up in a world surrounded by doubt, fear and negativity, can still be loved, inspired and hopeful for their future,” he said. “It’s events like these that make me feel like we are building a culture where no girl can feel like they are on their own.”

The mentees were encouraged to embrace the opportunities now afforded to them. They were strongly encouraged to be “open-minded and learn from their assigned mentors.”

EYEWITNESS: Chances… and Opposition’s taking them

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana

The APNU/AFC Opposition invited over the ABCE Western Diplomats – US Ambassador Sarah-Ann Lynch; UK High Commissioner Jane Miller; Canadian Chargé d’ Affaires Caroline Mireault, and the EU Chargé d’ Affaires Evalina Melbardze – for a tête-à-tête.

That’s progress, ain’t it?? After all, since Aug 2 2020, the same Opposition and their supporters and enablers from New York to Timbuktu have been cussing out the same diplomats as the very essence of “stink and dutty” for their role in and after the March 2 elections!!

Following their “regime change” script, they were the ones responsible for “the illegally-installed cabal” – said so often that by now it’s pronounced practically as one word!! – that’s been running (and ruining!) Guyana for the last two years!! And are now constructing that “emerging apartheid state” we’ve been hearing about!!

US Ambassador Sara-Ann Lynch in particular has come in for the bulk of the cuss-out “cuss down”? And there have even been strident demands made on the Biden Administration to have her fired!! And in case you wondered what pressure they could bring to bear of the US Government, they point to Congressman Hakeem Jeffries of the Congressional Black Caucus. Seems he frequents the SDA Church of one PNC supporter, even though he’s a Baptist!! But that’s all in the family, aint it? And for sure, he’s a brother!!

Representing the Opposition were: PNC/APNU/Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton; PNCR Chairman Shurwayne Holder; PNC MPs Ganesh Mahipaul and Amanza Walton-Desir; AFC Leader Khemraj Ramjattan; AFC Chair Cathy Hughes, and AFC General Secretary Sherod Duncan. The first thought was, ‘how did the two “sides” greet each other? Quite gender-balanced, if you don’t mind – at least FOUR!!

Since they were meeting at PNC’s Congress Place HQ, did Norton stretch out his hand to shake Sara-Ann’s?? Did she accept?? As we know, Norton lays great store on handshakes, and since the pic shows one and all smiling, your Eyewitness figures “all protocols were observed”!! In diplomatese, that covers a host of sins!!

So, what’d they talk about?? Did Sara-Ann ask Norton why they’ve been witch-hunting her?? Did Norton say, as Jagdeo reportedly told Vincent Alexander, “That’s just politics”? Unlike Alexander, did Sara-Ann say, “That’s okay??” Anyhow, it’s reported that elections and the voters list was raised by Norton and Ramjattan, GASP!!!! After all the cuss out at “western interference” in our elections, are these gentlemen suggesting that they “interfere” again?? What the heck’s going on?? So electoral interference (or blind eye on behalf of the PNC’s good – like between 1964 and 1985 – is kosher?? What happened to “dis time nah lang time”??

Interestingly, the AFC showed up even after declaring they’ll be parting ways with APNU come Christmas!! Kissed and made up?

…of UK Indian PM

Tomorrow we’ll know for sure whether Sunak’s chances of becoming Britain’s PM were more than a snowflake’s chances of surviving in hell!! In a not-unrelated factoid, yesterday India surpassed Britain as the 5th largest economy in the world. When Britain conquered India, it was about the second largest – behind China. Britain not only drained that wealth to develop itself, but destroyed the Indian economy, that’s only now finally recovering. This is related to the 180,000 or so Conversative voters who’ve already made the decision – which just has to be announced!! Cause those 97% White Conservatives – with 44% over 65!! – are just the ones who remember fondly when “Britannia rules the waves – and the wogs!!”

And resent that those same wogs have the temerity to show up at Britain’s shore penniless and – within one generation – become richer than the Queen!! What does that say about themselves?? Wouldn’t Sunak-as-PM be a living indictment of their racial stereotypes??And now wanting to run the entire show?? Wot?!

…of “The Rings of Power”

Your Eyewitness gotta hand it to Tolkien. That carefully constructed, barely disguised myth placing the Brits at the centre of not just Earth – but all worlds and dimensions – could only come from an Imperial conceit!

Mighty Sparrow baptised in New York Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Mighty Sparrow, the undisputed Calypso King of the World, was baptised on Saturday at Far Rockaway Beach in Queens, New York, USA.

With his baptism as a Seventh-Day Adventist, it is uncertain if the legendary Mighty Sparrow will ever again sing calypsos to his legions of fans worldwide.

According to the Searchlight newspaper in St Vincent and the Grenadines, Sparrow, 87, whose real name is Slinger Francisco, was “taken into the water of holy baptism by Vincentian Seventh-Day Adventist Pastor, Claudius Morgan.” Morgan, a former calypsonian himself, carried the sobriquet ‘Samaritan Singer’.

The paper said Sparrow, who now resides in Queens, was “dressed in all white” for his water baptism.

“He is now known as Brother Francisco, (and is) a member of the Linden Seventh-Day Adventist Church in New York,” the Searchlight said.

Mighty Sparrow is considered to be the greatest calypsonian of his generation.

He is known for classics such as ‘Jean and Dinah’, ‘Sa Sa Yea’, ‘Both Of Them’, ‘Drunk and Disorderly’, ‘Survival’, ‘Capitalism Gone Mad’, and ‘Education’.

Sparrow, who grew up in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, was born in the fishing village of Grand Roy in Grenada.

He moved to Trinidad and Tobago as a one-year-old with his mother. His father had relocated there in 1937.

Sparrow has won Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival Road March competition eight times, Calypso King/Monarch eight times, and has twice won the Calypso King of Kings title.

In July 2010, the United States Congress listed Sparrow in its Congressional Record.
