The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has announced that there will be an increase in the cost of replacement Smartercards effective Monday, September 26.

The State-owned bus company said the decision to charge more for a replacement card is due to a significant increase in the production cost of its Smartercards by its international supplier.

The JUTC said concession passengers will now pay $400, up from $300, while adult passengers will pay $700, up from the current $500.

It said, too, that no fees are attached to new Smartercards. However, customers are free to determine how much they wish to load onto their card.

The Smartercard is a rechargeable system used by JUTC passengers to pay their fares.

The Saint Lucia Fire Service (SLFS) says it transported ten people to the hospital Wednesday after responding to a report that a minibus had collided with an SUV in Londonderry, Saltibus.

The Vieux Fort fire station received a call for assistance at 7:35 pm and dispatched emergency personnel to the scene with backup from the Soufriere and Micoud stations.

On arrival, the emergency personnel treated ten patients before transporting them to St Jude Hospital.

The injured had sustained various injuries, including suspected fractures.

However, emergency responders said all were alert and conscious on their way to the hospital.

There are no further details at this time.

Según Mellado, una de las medidas que será flexibilizada será la del uso de mascarillas entre los estudiantes. “Estamos analizando las medidas. Una de las restricciones mayores son en las escuelas. Con las mascarillas podemos comenzar a trabajar porque ya sabemos que un gran número de estudiantes están vacunados. Estaremos anunciándolo próximamente”, expuso Mellado.

 India Women’s Twenty/20 Warm-up match against England Women’s Development Squad was abandoned because of rain at Chester-le-Street in Durham yesterday.

India Women made 149 off 19.5 overs. England Women’s Development Squad were 15-1 off 2 overs when rain forced an end to the match.

27-year-old Australian, Nick Kyrgios is out of the US Open after eventually being beaten by Russia’s Karen Khachanov in a tense quarter-final in New York last night.

Kyrgios, who needed treatment on his left thigh after the first set, lost 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 to 27th seed Khachanov.

Khachanov (26) is into his first major semi-final after edging the bigger points.

He plays against Norwegian fifth seed, Casper Ruud, who beat 13th seed, Matteo Berrettini 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Rafael Nadal’s exit in the last 16 against American, Frances Tiafoe on Monday means that a first-time Grand Slam men’s singles champion will be crowned at the U.S Open in New York on Sunday.

Khachanov, who trailed to Briton, Jack Draper in the third round before Draper got injured, still has the chance to be champion after beating 23rd seed Kyrgios with a composed performance in which he saved seven of nine break points.

The world number 31 edged a tight opener when the first break point of the match went his way in the 12th game, with Kyrgios requiring treatment afterwards and saying he was struggling to walk.

But Kyrgios recovered and found top gear in the second set to level the match.

The Wimbledon runner-up continued to create chances in the third set, but grew frustrated when his forehand broke down in the ninth game and stopped him taking any of two break points.

After clattering his racquet on the court, Kyrgios was unable to forget the missed opportunities as he served.

Kyrgios survived two set points in the 10th game, the first when Khachanov inexplicably hit a poor drop-shot into the stands, but could not see off another in the 12th game after Khachanov’s relentless returning continued to draw out errors.

Kyrgios ranted angrily and smashed a water bottle, which seemingly helped him to mentally reset in the fourth set and take a slow-burning match into a decider with a composed tie-break.

Khachanov took Kyrgios’ serve in the first game of the fifth set, superbly saved break points in his next two service games, and maintained a high level under serious pressure to clinch victory.

A furious Kyrgios destroyed two racquets before swiftly leaving court, with what seemed like a good chance of winning his first major left in tatters.

Killers changing tactics, says Chang Loop Barbados

Jamaica’s National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang says gunmen are reducing the number of shooting incidents they are engaged in but increasing the number of killings.

He made the statement Tuesday (September 7) as he opened the debate on the much-talked-about Firearms (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 2022 in the House of Representatives in Jamaica.

When passed into law, those found guilty of gun crimes could face a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison.

Speaking of multiple killings, the volatile Olympic Gardens community in the tough St Andrew South Police Division has experienced three double murders since Sunday evening.

To address the problem, the Government has justified what Chang acknowledged was the “punitive” nature of the legislation by pointing to rampant gun violence that has claimed upwards of 1,200 lives each year and the proliferation of illegal weapons in the society.

“Given this proliferation of illegal firearms in the country it is not surprising that the security forces have reported a steady rate of firearm recovery over the years,” Chang said in his opening remarks.

He said that since 2018, the security forces have taken more than 3,200 illegal firearms and in excess of 53,000 rounds of ammunition from the nation’s streets.

“In fact, the security forces have seized upwards of 625 firearms annually, and based on the firearm seizures so far this year, they are well on course to surpass the 703 firearms that were seized in 2021.

“As the police become more effective at intercepting the killers, however, we find that they are changing their tactics. They are reducing the number of shooting incidents and increasing the number of multiple killings,” said Chang.

Chang told the House that “what we have today in Jamaica, are well-funded and resourced criminals, with relative ease of access to high-powered weapons and other firearms who, are engaging each other in shoot-outs and are attacking the police and killing law-abiding citizens”.

“As a responsible government, knowing the impact that the regional guns-for-drugs trade is having on our country; knowing the pain and suffering that armed gangs and thugs are inflicting on our people, and the havoc they are causing in the communities; and being mindful of the crisis of criminal violence that we have on our hands …we had to take action!” he argued.

Said Chang: “This government had to respond to this crisis with a strong, comprehensive and impactful legislation, with a mandatory minimum sentence that will effectively deter criminals. This piece of legislation is punitive, but more importantly it will help to save Jamaican lives.”

The security minister said the Act was intended to curb the murder projections and stem the tide of criminal violence in the country.

“We know that legislation alone will not reduce the level of homicides overnight. We are confident, however, that this piece of legislation presents a strong deterrent to persons who are involved in trafficking, diversion, manufacture, stockpiling, and the movement of firearms, their parts, components, and ammunition. And we will not apologise for that! This is an effective tool for the police who have been successfully apprehending and prosecuting, but the current system has become a revolving door for hardened criminals,” said Chang.

The Act will repeal and replace the Firearms Act of 1967. It addresses the current criminal landscape in Jamaica and presents a strong response to the proliferation of illegal firearms within our jurisdiction Chang noted.

He highlighted that the consequential amendments made to the Offences Against the Person Act will increase penalty provisions for Sections 13, 16 and 17 by including a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years for offences involving the use of a firearm. In addition, under section 20(2) the mandatory sentence has been increased from 15 years to 20 years, in keeping with the proposed penalty regime in the current Bill.

BBC cancels scheduled TV programming following Queen’s health report Loop Barbados

BBC has cancelled its scheduled programme for television and radio as of midday.

According to reports online, the broadcaster cut their schedule short to make way for a news special during Bargain Hunt. A BBC presenter said: “Welcome to viewers on BBC One. We have had news from Buckingham Palace that the Queen is under medical supervision at Balmoral.”

It is reported that a special update is to be made at 6 pm.

On Twitter, the response to this move by the broadcaster, BBC, due to today’s news from the Palace that doctors are “concerned” for Queen Elizabeth II’s health coupled with the presenter wearing a black suit and black tie, is mixed.

Some viewers think that the cancellation is not a good sign.

When the news correspondent is wearing a black suit and tie, and BBC cancel their ongoing schedule at the mo, you know it’s serious. God bless The Queen.

Meanwhile, others believe the move is too much at this time.

Is it really necessary at this stage to cancel all programming on BBC? I can understand when the Queen has actually passed away but they are having to do a load of filling and repeating of the few updates that have been released. They don’t really have much to go on right now.

Harbour Master ship departs Grenada for Trinidad Loop Barbados

‘Harbour Master’, registered in Trinidad and Tobago, has departed from Grenada.

The party vessel left the Spice Island on September 7, 2022.

This latest update was given in a media release by Derick F Sylvester and Associates, legal counsel for Grenadian athlete Anderson Peters and his brother Kiddon Peters.

The statement read that the ship came to Grenada for Carnival festivities in August 2022; however, the ship was arrested in Grenada when certain of its crew inflicted harm and grievous harm on Grenadian World Champion javelin gold medallist Anderson Peters and his brother Kiddon Peters, Carnival Tuesday night on board the said ship.

Those crew members, who were charged, pleaded guilty at the St George’s Magistrate’s Court to summary criminal offences of Causing Harm and Grievous Harm.

The arrest of the ship was related to civil proceedings brought by the Peters brothers in the High Court of Grenada against the owners of the ship after the incident and subsequent charges laid. The arrest was effected through the Admiralty Division of the Court, on application by the Lawyers on record, Derick F Sylvester & Associates.

The departure of the ‘Harbour Master’ was the fruit of intensive negotiations between lawyers for the Peters brothers and lawyers for the ship.

The issue was the posting by the ship of proper security in the event of the ship being found liable in the High Court civil case. On one side of the negotiations were Derick F. Sylvester and Alicia C. Lawrence, lawyers on record for the Peters brothers, advised by Ruggles Ferguson and Dr Francis Alexis Q.C.

On the other side were Nyree D. Alfonso of Trinidad and Tobago and Dylan Charles of Grenada.

Sylvester says that ‘constructive, cordial and focused professional legal talks between the two teams of lawyers produced a mutually satisfactory conclusion to this stage of the matter’.

The High Court case will continue in the normal way.

Meanwhile, the Harbour Master on its various social media pages confirmed the latest news regarding the ship’s status.

A post on its Facebook business page today read:

“The Harbour Master has left Grenada to return to Trinidad.

We will resume our regularly scheduled cruises this weekend.

We look forward to the return of our Captain and his crew.”

CPL: St Lucia Kings win final over thriller over Jamaica Tallawahs Loop Barbados

Saint Lucia Kings got their Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) campaign up and running with a nail-biting victory against Jamaica Tallawahs in front of a raucous home crowd.

The Kings won the toss and opted to field first and they were rewarded for that decision with a disciplined performance with the ball and on the field.

Wickets fell at regular intervals to ensure the Tallawahs were restricted to 163/8

In reply, the Tallawahs played the Kings at their own game by taking regular wickets.

Mohammed Amir’s early double-wicket over rocked the Kings but Johnson Charles’ excellent half-century kept the home side in the game. There was still plenty to do when David Wiese strode to the crease but he marshalled the chase superbly to get the Kings their first win of the tournament.

The Tallawahs had made heavy going of their innings after being inserted. They lost too many wickets in the PowerPlay. Kennar Lewis, Shamarh Brooks and Rovman Powell all fell to leave the Tallawahs at 47/3 at the end of the first six overs.

When Brandon King was run out courtesy of brilliant fielding from Jeavor Royal, the Tallawahs were reeling at 62/4.

However, Imad Wasim and Raymon Reifer rebuilt the innings and set it up for some late over plundering in the final four overs to ensure the Tallawahs set an intriguing 164 to win.

Like the Tallawahs, the Kings innings struggled to get going in the PowerPlay.

They lost four wickets in the first seven overs to leave them in disarray at 39/4 but Tim David and Johnson Charles counter-attacked well to put the Kings side ahead of the game at the halfway stage of the innings.

That advantage seemed to have disappeared when both set batters were dismissed but Roshon Primus and the wily Wiese kept the Kings in the game going into the final few overs.

When Primus departed Wiese guided the chase into the final over and hit the winning run to rapturous celebration in the stands.
