Police say they have stepped up their investigation into the case where four men, two of them senior farmers, were reportedly held with stolen cattle believed to be from several farms in the parish of St Ann.

Following news of the probe fuming farmers, in the area, are calling on local authorities and the Government to impose stiffer penalties to clamp down on predial larceny.

“Make the laws as strict as the new proposed gun fines; 15 years or more minimum for those caught stealing from farmers,” one farmer suggested.

As it relates to the men held police said the individuals were apprehended in the Alexandria area of the parish on Friday transporting stolen cattle in two trucks that had the name of a patty company.

And as the police carry out their checks tempers are still flaring among farmers, in and around the area where the cows were stolen.

“So right now like how them increasing the gun law, a same so them to make cow thief, goat thief, banana thief and anything to do with Agriculture get some wicked sentence,” said one farmer from the parish who asked not to be named out of fear that he would be targeted if he spoke out openly.

“Up to 15 years or more. No joke thing. Farmers work too hard and a nuff farmers like me glad to get a break and go overseas. It too much. Police them don’t serious about the thief them, but me glad them catch those and a one and two man get back them cow,” said another farmer.

LEADING trainer Jason DaCosta dominated Saturday’s 10-race card at Caymanas Park with a three-timer including United States-bred I AM FRED, who won a stretch battle with 1-9 favourite MAHOGANY to land the six-furlong None Such Sprint by a short head.

DaCosta’s MAKEUPARTIST dragged topweight MAHOGANY into splits of 22.0 and 45.0 for the first quarter and half-mile, respectively, setting up I AM FRED to make a charging stretch run along the rail.

Running in receipt of 16lb from MAHOGANY, I AM FRED proved strongest in the last hop at the wire, winning in 1:11.0 with Christopher Mamdeen.

DaCosta’s other winners were two-year-old maiden THALITA at five furlongs round and US-bred three-year-old filly, MADELYN’S SUNSHINE, also at five round, both for champion owner Carlton Watson.

Champion jockey Anthony Thomas was aboard both DaCosta fillies. Thomas’ two-timer reduced Dane Dawkins’ lead atop the standings to six ahead of Sunday’s 10-race meet.

Government looking to IMF again – US $340 million hope Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

As Government’s four-year deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) comes to a close at month-end, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has announced plans to seek to extend its partnership with the IMF for an additional three years.

And she said that this decision was “not taken lightly”.

We have been of the view that the cheapest money in town is still at the International Monetary Fund.

Addressing the nation from Ilaro Court on Friday, September 9, Prime Minister Mottley hoping to access up to US $340 million from the financial institution.

“The Cabinet yesterday [Thursday, September 9] agreed that we will formally approach the International Monetary Fund again with a letter that proposes to sign this afternoon to the managing director asking for discussions and negotiations to resume,” Prime Minister Mottley declared.

She revealed that should the discussions with the IMF in the coming weeks be successful, Government sought to get US $130 million and an additional US $200 to $210 million from the IMF’s Resilience and Sustainability Trust.

The Resilience and Sustainable Trust launched by the Fund this year will help countries build resilience to external shocks – such as natural disasters, pandemics, etc – and promote sustainable growth.

“We are living in very difficult and uncertain times and in a world where a number of countries…are on the brink of debt difficulties and debt crisis. We are conscious that between that, and the monetary stance that has been taken by most central banks to control inflation has led to an increase in the cost of borrowing. We have been of the view that the cheapest money in town is still at the International Monetary Fund.

“In addition to that, it also unlocks other development funds that may be made available to us as a nation. And indeed, about an hour ago I spoke to the president of the Inter-American Development Bank who confirmed what the limits and potential is for Barbados, both for the rest of this year 2022 and in 2023 with respect to the funding that be made available to us,” Mottley added.

Lewandowski can’t stop scoring for Bar?a before Bayern trip Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Robert Lewandowski came off the bench to help Barcelona win 4-0 at C?diz in the Spanish league on Saturday as the Poland striker extended his superb scoring run before facing former club Bayern Munich.

Play was paused for more than a half-hour as Red Cross medics attended to a fan with a medical emergency in the stands. The man, who appears to have had a heart issue, was eventually removed on a stretcher before the game restarted for the final eight minutes.

Lewandowski scored his ninth goal in five games to double Barcelona’s lead after Frenkie de Jong’s 55th-minute opener. Lewandowski has only failed to score in one game — his debut — since joining Barcelona from Bayern this summer.

Following the halt in play for the ill fan, Lewandowski assisted Ansu Fati before Ousmane Demb?l? struck from long range to make it a rout.

A fourth win in a row in the Spanish league lifted Barcelona to the top of the standings, one point ahead of Real Madrid before the defending champions host Mallorca on Sunday.

Coach Xavi Hern?ndez left Lewandowski, Demb?l? and Pedri Gonz?lez out of his starting lineup ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Germany in the Champions League. All three came on moments after De Jong’s goal.

Xavi and his C?diz counterpart Sergio Gonz?lez both wished the stricken fan a quick recovery, agreeing that the incident, which silenced the Nuevo Mirandilla Stadium in southern Spain, was a reminder that football is just a game.

“Health, once again, is the most important thing,” Xavi said. “We hope that he gets better as soon as possible.”

Playing Bayern will pit Barcelona against a team that has dominated then in recent seasons when they met in Europe. Bayern humiliated Barcelona 8-2 in 2020 and beat the Spanish club twice by the score of 3-0 last year.

C?diz hung tight until Raphinha found Gavi P?ez all alone near the end line, where the midfielder crossed the ball into the box. Goalkeeper Jerem?as Ledesma could only push it toward the penalty spot where De Jong arrived to fire home.

The second goal was a similar team move down the right flank in the 65th. H?ctor Beller?n, who debuted for Barcelona, played Raphinha clear and the Brazilian squared the ball to De Jong. Ledesma stopped De Jong’s effort from close range, with Lewandowski sliding in and sweeping it over the line.

Lewandowski fended off defender Joseba Zald?a on the break before drawing in Ledesma and laying off for Ansu, who had also come on as a substitute, to make it 3-0. Ledesma, who assisted medics during the medical emergency by carrying equipment, couldn’t stop Demb?l?’s powerful shot that hit him in the torso before finding the net.

C?diz remained in last place after losing all five games they have played without scoring a single goal.

Marcos Alonso also debuted for Barcelona as a late substitute, while Gerard Pique made his first start of the season.

RELIEF FOR SEVILLA

Sevilla got their first win of the season in all competitions after holding on for a 3-2 victory at Espanyol while playing the final minutes with 10 men.

Jos? ?ngel Carmona, a 20-year-old defender, led Sevilla with an assist for Erik Lamela and two goals to build a 3-0 lead.

Espanyol rallied behind a penalty converted by Joselu Mato and a goal from Martin Braithwaite.

Lamela was sent off in the 84th with his second booking, but Sevilla defended well in stoppage time.

RAYO WIN

Justin Kluivert, son of former Netherlands striker Patrick Kluivert, debuted for Valencia as a second-half substitute in their 2-1 loss at Rayo Vallecano.

Neymar keeps scoring, Donnarumma keeps saving for PSG Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

PARIS (AP) — The goals keep coming for Neymar at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), and Gianluigi Donnarumma keeps stopping them at the other end.

The Brazil forward netted his eighth goal in seven French league games and Donnarumma parried away a penalty to lead PSG back to the top with a 1-0 win over Brest on Saturday.

Still unbeaten in all competitions ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League, PSG had briefly dropped to second place following Len’s 1-0 win against Troyes on Friday.

Christophe Galtier’s team moved back in charge with its sixth league win, level on points with second-place Marseille but having a better goal difference. Lens are in third place, two points behind the leading duo.

Marseille rallied to beat Lille 2-1 at the Stade Velodrome, bouncing back from their loss against Tottenham in the Champions League midweek. Defender Samuel Gigot volleyed home the winner in the 60th minute after Alexis Sanchez leveled for Marseille following Ismaily’s opener.

Galtier said he regretted that PSG players did not enjoy a more comfortable win and he criticized their “technical mistakes.” Galtier told French media that defender Presnel Kimpembe, who limped off the field near the end, would miss PSG’s next couple of matches because of a muscular lesion.

Neymar’s goal took him top outright in the scoring charts ahead of teammate Kylian Mbapp?. With the World Cup looming later this year, the former Barcelona player has been in excellent form, with an additional six assists.

Neymar put the hosts in front in the 29th minute from Lionel Messi’s assist. The Argentine picked out his teammate perfectly with a lofted ball into the box that Neymar controlled with a soft touch before firing it home with a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner.

PSG’s formidable three-pronged attack of Mbapp?, Neymar and Messi combined well throughout the game, with Brest second-best in all sectors of the field at the Parc des Princes. The trio created havoc near the hour mark with a succession of quick passes but Mbapp? fluffed his shot and missed the target.

Mbapp? had a goal disallowed before halftime for an offside position, and Messi came close to doubling PSG’s lead after the interval only to see his header from Mbapp?’s cross hit the post as Brest ‘keeper Marco Bizot looked well beaten.

PSG could have been made to pay for their profligacy after Brest were awarded a soft penalty with 20 minutes left when Kimpembe was sanctioned for contact with Noah Fadiga. But Donnarumma got a firm hand to Islam Slimani’s effort from the spot.

Donnarumma was decisive again nine minutes later to stop another effort from Slimani, ensuring that the hosts stayed in command.

“It’s important to be able to suffer together,” Donnarumma said. “And today, we did it. We knew it would not be easy, and we had to suffer all together.”

Counsellor concerned about suicides amongst males especially Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Barbados News

On Caribbean Wellness Day (September 10), the CEO of Supreme Counselling for Personal Development Shawn Clarke admits that he is “very concerned” about the number of suicides that have happened in Barbados for a small population of this size in recent months and the past few years.

If we refuse to go back to the drawing board, we are going to continue losing our males

Speaking to Loop News on the sidelines of the Wellness Day event organised by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Clarke, who is also a member on the National Task Force for Wellness, said:

“I’m very, very concerned about the suicides. I think we have to put mechanisms, and systems in place to try to encourage our males to come forward and to talk about things that are concerning to them. As families, we have to teach our males, our young males that it is okay to cry, it is okay to talk.”

He said that it cannot continue as business as usual, with people sweeping the incidents under the carpet until the next one occurs.

Clarke asserted better must be done now to prevent more disastrous outcomes.

“If we refuse to go back to the drawing board, we are going to continue losing our males. It is very concerning and it is something we need to take stock of.”

Therefore he said there must be a cultural shift away from making Bajan boys and men feel as though they have no release or respite, no safe spaces to show their emotions and safely expel negative thoughts.

Asked if and why he believes Bajan men and women cope with stress differently, especially with more males seeming to be the victims of suicide in more recent times, he agreed “yes” and explained that it has to do with the variations in the upbringing of the sexes.

“I think females are allowed to talk, to share with your girlfriends, your family members and so on, but for males, we’re supposed to be strong, supposed to keep everything on the inside, we’re supposed to be strong, we’re supposed to be manly. We are not supposed to do anything that persons would consider us less than a male. So I think because of that in the end we keep everything on the inside and it is almost like putting garbage in a garbage can…you continue to put garbage in that can…eventually that can is going to fill, it’s going to overflow…and that is what typically happens to males where we try to keep everything bottled up on the inside until we can no longer handle it.”

September is also Suicide Prevention Month in some countries around the globe.
