CARICOM ‘Gravely Concerned’ Over Haiti’s Deteriorating Security Situation – St. Lucia Times News

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) declared on Monday that the group is ‘gravely concerned’ over continuing deterioration of the security situation and social circumstances in Haiti.

“The continued breakdown in law and order, and its distressing effect on the people of Haiti, is intensifying,” a CARICOM statement observed.

And the statement indicated that the inability of the Haitian security forces to address ongoing violence made the situation worse.

According to CARICOM, the unrest is negatively impacting Haiti’s already weak economy, leading to even more mass demonstrations.

“Especially the worsening social conditions and the limited availability of food require urgent and immediate attention from the international community,” CARICOM stated.

“This persistently distressing situation is untenable,” the regional grouping observed.

It called for meaningful engagement of all stakeholders to find a way forward, put Haiti first and urgently address the situation.

“CARICOM, following discussions in the past weeks, remains available to assist and work with international partners to mobilize financial and technical resources to facilitate a process towards normalization and ultimately the holding of free, fair and credible general elections,” the statement noted.

The CARICOM statement came against the backdrop of socioeconomic and political chaos in Haiti, as turf wars among rival gangs escalate.

Media reports indicate that as many as 200 heavily armed factions are estimated to be carving up the capital, Port-au-Prince.

The result has been that many areas that had been relatively safe are now engulfed in street warfare and innocent people are being killed in the crossfire.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne pleads case of island states during meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

As chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne participated in an Open Exchange with the new German  Chancellor Olaf Scholz earlier today.

The meeting is only one of several bilateral and multilateral engagements that will hold the attention all the country’s Prime Minister on his visit to New York for the 77th United Nations General Assembly.

Prime Minister Browne was accompanied by Minister of Education the Hon. Daryll Matthew. Also in attendance were the Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, the President of Suriname Chandrikapersad Santokhi and the Prime Minister of Tuvalu Kausea Natano.

Prime Minister Browne used the opportunity to plead the case of small island states who remain under the constant threat of extreme climatic conditions.

A major priority for Antigua and Barbuda as Chair of AOSIS at COP27 is the establishment of a funding facility to finance Loss and Damage.

“COP27 must show the political will to address the climate crisis like the crisis that it is, and the responses that we have seen for the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the energy security crises,” Prime Minister Browne stated.

Against this background, Prime Minister Browne urged for the inclusion of Loss and Damage as an item on the COP 27 agenda and ultimately for the establishment of such a funding arrangement by the end of the meeting, which will take place in Egypt later this year.

He also took Germany to task for reactivating coal plants even as the goal to stay below 1.5 remains under threat because of the hesitancy by industrialised nations to shift meaningfully away from their dependence on fossil fuels.

Prime Minister Browne also tabled several solutions for Germany’s consideration in supporting the needs of Small Island States (SIDS), one of which is the Multidimensional Vulnerabilty Index (MVI) where Prime Minister Browne is the Co-Chair of the UN Expert Panel on the MVI

Once agreed by UN Member States, the MVI  will take into account the unique vulnerabilities for island states as they seek to build resilience from climate change and other global shocks. The MVI will allow middle and high-income SIDS to gain access to concessional financing and other development support irrespective of their income status.

Chastanet: “Join The Campaign To Get Our Roads Fixed!” – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: St. Lucia Times News

Opposition leader Allen Chastanet has again taken the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) government to task over the state of Saint Lucia’s roads.

“Join the campaign to get our roads fixed,” the United Workers Party (UWP) leader urged in a Facebook post.

The former Prime Minister asserted that before leaving office in July 2021, his government had initiated the “largest road reconstruction Programme ever experienced in Saint Lucia”.

“Some of you would remember the famous chant by the SLP that “People don’t eat roads” as their counter to this unprecedented initiative to provide citizens with roads which would reduce their vehicle maintenance costs, improve traveling times and bolster road safety,” Chastanet said.

But he observed that unfortunately, the new Government has stopped the programme.

According to the Micoud South MP, the result has been that many roads which would have already been completely rebuilt had the projects not been stopped, are now in deplorable condition.

He said a key example is the Rodney Bay Highway.

And Chastanet also mentioned the recently renamed Sir Julian Hunte Highway.

“Have you seen the state of the SLP’s newly renamed Sir Julian Hunte Highway? What an insult to a man that they claim to respect! You deserve better,” the UWP leader declared.

The content originally appeared on: Radio Isla TV

High schools debating competition gets underway in St Thomas Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

High schools in St Thomas will be competing for prizes valued at over $500,000 in the Paul Bogle and The Warriors Debating Competition which gets underway this week.

The competition which is now in its second year, seeks to foster, particularly among students enrolled in high schools, a greater measure of positive involvement in the socio-cultural, political, and economic dynamics of their communities, parish, and Jamaica within the context of the Morant Bay War (Rebellion) of 1865.

The participating schools this year are Robert Lightbourne High, Paul Bogle High, Seaforth High, Morant Bay High, The Academy of Yallahs High, and St Thomas Technical High School.

Morant Bay High won the inaugural debate in 2021.

The St Thomas Renaissance Foundation, a for-impact organisation whose mandate is to spur economic and social development within the parish, is the conceptualiser and organiser of the debate competition.

The foundation has partnered with the country’s accomplished debate planner, the Jamaican Association for Debating and Empowerment, JADE, to execute the competition. First Heritage Cooperative Credit Union, FHC Credit Union, has come on board as the competition’s main sponsor.

The six high schools within the parish will begin their debates during the week of September 20, in three matches based on a randomised draw.

This will result in three winners who will automatically advance to the next round. The team with the lowest score is automatically eliminated at this stage.

The two remaining losing teams will face off and the winner of this match will advance along with the previous three winners to compete in the semi-final rounds.

The semifinals will be in two rounds. The finalists will be the two teams with the highest combination of team and individual points at the end of both rounds. Teams will be awarded three points for each win and one point for each loss. Speaker points will also be awarded to individuals on each team. The two highest-scoring teams will play in the grand finale. The third and fourth-ranked teams will face off for third place.

The motions for the competition were crafted to reflect the historical, cultural, and contemporary issues of the parish. Among the hot button topics to be debated are: ‘This House Believes that the Morant Bay War has done more good than harm to the parish of St Thomas’.

‘This House Believes that St Thomas continues to suffer from neglect by successive political and private sector interests for daring to stage the Morant Bay War’. ‘This House as the British Government of 1865 would sentence Governor Edward Eyre to the death penalty for crimes against humanity which he sanctioned during the Morant Bay War of 1865’.

The winning school and its team members will receive the coveted trophy, cash prizes from FHC Credit Union, and Chromebooks courtesy of the Foundation, among other prizes. The winning team will also be afforded the opportunity to compete in a debate tournament at the University of West Georgia in the United States. Sectional prizes will also be presented to the best speakers and the schools’ coaches.

The grand finals will be held on October 11, the day that marked the beginning of the Morant Bay War when the residents of St Thomas rose up against the injustices that were meted out against them by their colonial masters in 1865.

The St Thomas Renaissance Foundation Inc. is a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting education, healthcare, economic development, and social initiatives in the parish of St Thomas, Jamaica.
