The US Government, through the United States Agency for International Development Eastern and Southern Caribbean Mission (USAID/ESC), will provide a grant of USD $350,000 for groundwater monitoring equipment to support the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) in partnership with the Caribbean Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH).

This initiative was announced at a September 21 meeting between Acting Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw and USAID/ESC Regional Representative Clinton D White. This program is part of the ongoing commitment by the United States to the people of Barbados to assist in mitigating and adapting to climate change.

As a water scarce country, Barbados faces habitually drought, which is intensified by less frequent rainfall, saline intrusion and an ageing water distributing infrastructure. These challenges make it difficult for the BWA to ensure basic water service island-wide.

Working with the CIMH, the BWA is establishing a network of groundwater monitoring stations that track water levels and quality, including salinity, in three communities.

Under the grant, approximately 20 stations will be added to this network, which will greatly improve BWA’s ability to monitor groundwater flows and will assist with the overall management of water service to the citizens of Barbados. Groundwater monitoring is part of a larger United States assistance program to Barbados and the region to build resilience to the effects of climate change.

In response to the announcement, Acting Prime Minister Bradshaw thanked USAID for the generous support and stated that, “it bears testament to the strong relationship and support for development between the Government of Barbados and the Government of the United States. The needs were heard and USAID responded in short order.”

USAID/ESC Regional Representative Clinton D. White noted, “This data collection and measurement that will result from the placement of the equipment is critical to evaluating the quantity and quality of groundwater and will provide BWA with information to make wise use of limited groundwater resources. It is an important step in ensuring that Barbados has a reliable water supply.”

A Fyzabad, Trinidad and Tobago couple whose son was killed by police on Monday afternoon following an armed robbery at Pennywise Plaza in La Romaine in that country said they are still stunned by his involvement.

Glen Dodough and his wife Melesia broke their silence publicly during an interview with Crime Watch host Ian Alleyne.

The couple are the parents of Greg Dodough, 21. Their son was one of six people who murdered two security guards during a heist. Allied Security Limited employees Jeffrey Peters and Jerry Stuart died on the scene. A third security guard, Peola Baptiste, is fighting for her life at the hospital.

Greg and three of his friends — brothers Kyle Ramdhan, 23, and Keyon Ramdhan, 22 — as well as De’Aundre Montrose were killed by police. All four were Fyzabad residents and attended the Fyzabad Anglican Secondary School.

In the aftermath of the tragic incident which made national headlines, Alleyne visited Greg’s family to get their side of the story. Speaking candidly, they said their life has been a nightmare since.

Glen said: “We try to give we children a good life, teach them the right thing, teach them the correct morals about life and the friends just carry him.”

I know my son do the wrong thing and I apologise to the family in mourning [for] what they did to them.

However, Glen said his son was not known to be in criminal activity. He said Greg worked with his company Glen Sandblasting and Painting and was exposed to philanthropy at a young age – his family holds an annual Christmas toy drive and his mom decorates the Oropouche and Fyzabad Police Stations during the season for free.

He added: “That [criminal] side of my son, I don’t know it… This is a shock to me and he mother, to the whole family.”

Glen also said that his son’s demise should serve as a cautionary tale to parents who do not know their children’s friends.

He said: “Parents who feel they know they children, get to know they friends and even self they know they friends, find out they friends friends. Is the friends…the bad influence out there! Me eh making no excuse for my son. He do the wrong thing, yes, and I apologise again to the family…”

Greg would have celebrated his 22nd birthday on Sunday, September 25. He was also expected to accompany his father to Barbados on Tuesday as their company was hired for a job over there. His suitcase was already packed.

Melesia, who sat silently as her husband spoke with Alleyne, eventually chimed in once questioned. Her head was bent downward as she stared blankly at the ground.

She said: “I know the kind of child I raised and that is not him…”

“Greg was so loving, Greg will help anybody on the road. He will do anything for anybody. This is not Greg.”

Moreover, she asked members of the public to sympathise with some parents as all are not delinquent.

She said: “People will always say negative things about parents when children get dey self in trouble but don’t always blame parents… Not all parents does fail. It have parents who does go out dey and do what it takes to have dey children on the correct road. I stay home and make sure that my children was taken care of. It have nothing I didn’t do to make sure my children was on the right track… nothing. Don’t always blame parents, parents does go the mile for dey children but it have the minute that friends does get to your children…”

El secretario del Departamento de Agricultura (DA), Ramón González Beiró, anunció hoy un paquete de ayudas de más de dos millones de dólares, como parte de la respuesta inmediata para mitigar los daños en el sector agrario causados por el huracán Fiona, donde hubo pérdidas significativas de plátanos, guineos, hortalizas, papaya, café, entre otros. 

El Secretario, también extendió el periodo de radicación de reclamaciones a los asegurados de la Corporación de Seguros Agrícolas (CSA) y el periodo para solicitar un estímulo mediante el Programa de Incentivos Regionales e Inversiones. 

“Vamos a recuperar nuestros campos y nuestras fincas como lo hemos hecho antes. Hemos estado visitando a nuestros agricultores y conocemos sus necesidades. El Gobernador Pierluisi nos ha pedido que pongamos todos los recursos disponibles para apoyar en la recuperación del sector agrícola y es precisamente lo que estamos haciendo. Como parte de este esfuerzo estamos anunciando hoy una serie de ayudas para nuestros agricultores. Mientras continuamos identificando fondos para seguir estimulando a unos de los sectores con mayor relevancia”, dijo González Beiró. 

Según explicó, los agricultores asegurados tendrán hasta el 7 de octubre para someter la radicación al CSA, a través de correo electrónico o por correo certificado. Por otro lado, los agricultores tendrán hasta el 31 de octubre de 2022 para solicitar las ayudas que provee el Programa de Incentivos Regionales e Inversiones.

Por otro lado, anunció un estímulo económico de hasta $10,000 por agricultor para el arrendamiento de maquinaria que permita restablecer los accesos a las fincas, realizar actividades como construcción y reconstrucción de badenes, limpieza de escombros, arado, desagües, entre otros. El Programa para el Arrendamiento de Maquinaria Agrícola cuenta con un fondo disponible de un millón de dólares. Las solicitudes podrán someterse hasta el 31 de octubre de 2022 a través de las ocho oficinas regionales.

Además, se estableció el Programa de Incentivo de Emergencia a los Agricultores Agroecológicos y/o Orgánicos, Hidropónicos e Industria Ornamentales y Viveristas que permitirá brindarle un estímulo de $5,000 por agricultor que no cuente con un seguro con la CSA. Para estos fines, el Departamento destinó un millón de dólares. Los programas podrán solicitarse desde el lunes, 26 de septiembre y estarán disponibles hasta el 31 de octubre de 2022. Las solicitudes deberán ser entregadas en las oficinas regionales. 

“Reconociendo la importancia de la polinización para tener buenos cultivos, desarrollamos el Programa de Emergencia para Promover la Producción Apícola. Estaremos repartiendo inicialmente 600 cajas a los agricultores existentes y le otorgaremos vales para que puedan comprar suplementos y azúcar, para que las abejas se alimenten en lo que se recupera la flora”, detalló González. 

El titular hizo un llamado a la población de adquirir los productos agrícolas locales y enfatizó que estas próximas semanas se estará viendo muchos de estos productos debido a que los agricultores necesitan vender lo antes posible las cosechas que pudieron salvar. “Necesitamos que respalden comprándole a nuestros agricultores. Será el último ingreso que obtendrán con la venta de sus productos hasta varios meses en lo que logran tener de nuevo sus cosechas.  Por consiguiente, hago un llamado a respaldar los productos locales para mejorar nuestra economía agraria,” dijo González.
