The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) has forecast that Tropical Storm Ian will intensify over the Central Caribbean before its approach near Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

In the 8 am forecast, NHC said the centre of TS Ian was located 485 kilometres south-southeast of Jamaica.

On the forecast track, the centre of TS Ian is forecast to move across the central Caribbean Sea today, pass southwest of Jamaica on Sunday, and pass near or over the Cayman Islands Sunday night and early Monday.

TS Ian will then approach western Cuba on Monday.

La tempête post-tropicale Fiona, ex-ouragan qui a durement frappé samedi la côte atlantique du Canada avec une femme portée disparue et un demi-million de foyers privés d’électricité, remontait dimanche vers le nord en continuant à s’affaiblir progressivement.

Avec des vents maximum soutenus de 80 kilomètres/heure, Fiona va gagner dans la journée la mer du Labrador et “continuera à donner des vents forts sur le nord de Terre-Neuve, le sud-est du Labrador et certains secteurs du sud-est du Québec” dimanche matin, selon le Centre canadien de prévision des ouragans. “Ces vents vont diminuer plus tard dans la journée”.

Deux femmes ont été emportées par les eaux à Channel-Port-aux-Basques, dans la province de Terre-Neuve, avait indiqué samedi une porte-parole de la police. L’une des deux victimes, emportée après l’effondrement de sa maison, a été secourue et hospitalisée, l’autre reste portée disparue.

Au moins 20 maisons ont été détruites et la région ressemble à “une zone de guerre”, a dit samedi soir dans une vidéo diffusée sur Facebook le maire de Channel-Port-aux-Basques, Brian Button. Ordre a été donné de faire bouillir l’eau, a-t-il ajouté, encourageant les habitants à se réfugier dans une école locale.

Arbres arrachés, maisons emportées, lignes électriques endommagées… Samedi en fin d’après-midi, jusqu’à près de 500.000 foyers se sont retrouvés privés d’électricité dans les provinces de Nouvelle-Ecosse, de l’Ile-du-Prince-Edouard et du Nouveau-Brunswick.

Certains foyers seront privés de courant “pendant plusieurs jours”, a averti le directeur de l’opérateur Nova Scotia Power, Peter Gregg.

“Il faudra du temps pour que la Nouvelle-Ecosse se remette. Je demande simplement à chacun de la patience”, a noté dans un communiqué le Premier ministre de cette province, Tim Houston.

Des précipitations allant jusqu’à 192 millimètres ont été enregistrées en Nouvelle-Ecosse et des vagues jusqu’à 12 mètres de haut ont frappé cette province ainsi que l’ouest de Terre-Neuve, selon les services météorologiques. Fiona avait touché terre en Nouvelle-Ecosse tôt samedi avec des vents à 144 km/h.

“Mon lit tremblait”

“J’ai été réveillé vers 5 heures parce que mon lit tremblait!”, a confié à l’AFP Shaun Bond, qui vit à Sydney, en Nouvelle-Ecosse. “Je vis au deuxième étage d’une maison centenaire et elle bougeait et faisait des bruits comme je n’en ai jamais entendu.”

“Je pense à tous ceux touchés par l’ouragan Fiona. Sachez qu’on est avec vous”, a tweeté le Premier ministre canadien Justin Trudeau, annonçant que les autorités fédérales se tenaient prêtes à fournir “des ressources additionnelles”.

M. Trudeau, qui a annulé sa participation au Japon aux funérailles de l’ex-Premier ministre Shinzo Abe, a assuré samedi aux journalistes “suivre la situation de très près”.

L’archipel français de Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, au sud de la province canadienne de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, avait été placé par l’institut Météo-France sous vigilance jaune pour vents violents et vigilance orange pour mer dangereuse.

Au moins sept morts

Fiona était passé vendredi au large des Bermudes sans faire de victimes ou de dégâts majeurs, après avoir semé mort et destructions dans les Caraïbes. L’ouragan a fait au moins sept morts la semaine passée dont quatre à Porto Rico, deux en République dominicaine et un en Guadeloupe.

Dimanche, alors que les Caraïbes pansaient leurs plaies, Cuba, la Jamaïque et la Floride (Etats-Unis) se préparaient à l’arrivée de la tempête tropicale Ian qui devrait se renforcer les jours prochains pour atteindre ou approcher la force d’un ouragan, selon le Centre national des ouragans américain (NHC).

La tempête Ian devrait remonter via le Golfe du Mexique vers la Floride, où se trouve le centre spatial Kennedy et placée sous état d’urgence par le président américain Joe Biden. La Nasa a annoncé samedi renoncer au décollage prévu mardi de sa nouvelle méga-fusée pour la Lune. La mission Artémis 1 a déjà connu deux essais de lancement ratés il y a quelques semaines à cause de problèmes techniques.

The Cayman Islands Government said that Grand Cayman remains under a Hurricane Warning today, Sunday 25 September as weather conditions are expected to begin deteriorating within the next 24 hours.

The Sister Islands are under a Tropical Storm Watch at this time.

Overcast skies with widespread thunderstorms are expected, with tropical storm conditions late into the night and possible hurricane conditions early Monday morning as the system nears the Cayman Islands.

Extremely rough seas accompanied by storm surge are also expected. Swells generated by Tropical Storm Ian will spread into the Cayman area later today.

The Sister Islands are expected to experience similar conditions, but have a lower chance of experiencing storm force winds based on the current forecast track.Marine warnings are in effect for all the Cayman Islands, with anticipated wave heights of six to eight feet, and storm surge of two to four feet.

Forecasts show two to four inches of rainfall over the next 72 hours, thus there are anticipated flood warnings for the Cayman Islands. Persons living in low-lying areas are strongly encouraged to seek shelter on higher ground.

Each of the shelters mentioned above also serves as a designated Emergency Medical Centre. Persons attending shelters are reminded to bring adequate food, water and personal hygiene supplies with them. They should also have all important documentation in their possession and stored in a watertight container. Also, persons who require special assistance should be accompanied by a caregiver.

Due the continued unpredictability of Tropical Storm Ian and its expected intensification residents are urged to remain cautious and prepared.

La muerte de una mujer kurda de 22 años que cayó en coma tras ser detenida en Teherán por llevar un hiyab “inapropiado” ha provocado múltiples protestas en todo Irán.

Rechazando las acusaciones de malos tratos, las autoridades iraníes afirman que Mahsa Amini sufría de enfermedades preexistentes. Las protestas se han extendido por al menos 15 ciudades, dejando varias personas muertas y provocando cortes parciales de Internet mientras continúa la indignación por el código de vestimenta y las leyes sobre el velo del gobierno, informan Al Jazeera y Reuters.

Días antes de su muerte, fue detenida por la policía de la moral en Teherán y llevada a un centro de “reeducación” para recibir orientación sobre su vestimenta. Mientras estaba detenido, Amini cayó en coma y murió poco después. La policía ha calificado la muerte de Amini de “incidente desafortunado” y ha negado que sufriera daños físicos durante su detención, según informó el lunes la agencia de noticias semioficial Fars News. Las autoridades iraníes han dicho que Amini murió tras sufrir un “ataque al corazón” después de su detención, pero su familia dice que no tenía una enfermedad cardíaca preexistente.

Los estadounidenses de origen iraní también están organizando manifestaciones en todo Estados Unidos este fin de semana en solidaridad con las protestas en curso en Irán por la muerte de una mujer de 22 años que se desmayó mientras estaba detenida por la policía de la moralidad.

Ya es oficial: Geralt of Rivia regresa por tercera ocasión a Netflix.

Según la página oficial de la serie, la tercera temporada estrenará en el verano del 2023. Se espera el regreso además de los protagonistas: Henry Cavill (Geralt de Rivia), Anya Chalotra (Yennefer de Vengerberg) y Freya Allan (Princesa Cirilla de Cintra).

La segunda temporada revela una muestra del verdadero poder de Ciri como hija del Anciano de Sangre, capaz de abrir portales a otros mundos y liberar terribles monstruos en el continente. 

Esta es la sinopsis oficial de la tercera temporada: “Mientras los monarcas, los magos y las bestias del continente compiten por capturarla, Geralt se lleva a Ciri de Cintra a la clandestinidad, decidido a proteger a su recién reunida familia contra los que amenazan con destruirla. The Cayman Islands remain in the crosshairs of Tropical Storm Ian, according to various storm models.

This forecast hasn’t changed much over the last 24 hours as Ian continues moving westward with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.

Over the next couple of days, however, the National Hurricane Center predicts that Ian may rapidly intensify and become a hurricane.

The first signs of Ian as a hurricane, according to some weather models, may occur as Ian moves past the Cayman Islands. Regarding this, impacts are foreseen for the Cayman Islands late Sunday night or early Monday morning.

Depending on its proximity, the Cayman Islands could feel a jolt of maximum sustained winds somewhere in the region of 70-80 mph, according to the below and other forecast tracks.

The southwest of Jamaica is also in Ian’s path. Regarding this, Jamaica may experience the effects of Ian by Sunday.

Once Ian makes its journey past the Cayman Islands and Jamaica, Ian is likely to approach western Cuba and then Florida, inundating some areas with heavy rainfall, storm surge, flooding and exposing coastlines to dangerous swells and rip conditions.

Given the foregoing predictions, a Hurricane Watch is in effect for the Cayman Islands and a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Jamaica.
