El Servicio Nacional de Meteorología (SNM) en San Juan emitió en la tarde del lunes, una advertencia de inundaciones urbanas y de pequeños riachuelos para varios municipios de la zona oeste.

Los municipios de Aguada, Añasco, Las Marías, Mayagüez y Rincón, permanecerán bajo advertencia de inundaciones hasta las 5:00 de la tarde.

A la 1:54 de la tarde, el radar Doppler detectó fuertes lluvias debido a tormentas eléctricas.

Entre 1 y 2 pulgadas de lluvia han caído, según el SNM. Se esperan cantidades adicionales de lluvia de 1 a 2 pulgadas sobre el área advertida. Esta lluvia adicional resultará en menores inundaciones.

The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has issued the all-clear notice for the Cayman Islands, effective 3pm, as Hurricane Ian passes on its way to Cuba.

Hurricane Ian is expected to continue on its northwest path, strengthening into a major hurricane by the time it passes over Cuba on Tuesday morning.

“While weather conditions are expected to gradually improve as Hurricane Ian moves away from the area, the Cayman Islands is expected to continue to face rain, wind, rough seas and heavy swells for the next 24 hours,” according to the NEOC.

Cayman Islands residents are encouraged to continue monitoring official channels for updates and not to take unnecessary risks in the aftermath of the storm.

Premier G Wayne Panton said the Cayman Islands are fortunate to have been spared greater damage and credited the public for all efforts to be prepared ahead of the severe weather and stay safe while the storm passed.

“While we have all been very fortunate to have been spared the worst of a potentially very serious storm, I’m extremely pleased to have seen the efforts made by the Caymanian public to prepare for ‘the worst’, whilst praying for the best. In this situation, this is simply the safest, most strategic thing to do,” said Panton.

“We are aware of the considerable anxiety storms can pose for our people. Although the all clear has now been issued for our islands, we must continue to heed the advisories from HMCI, CINWS and other official sources, to ensure that we keep ourselves and our loved ones safe,” he added.

Governor Martyn Roper

Meanwhile, Governor Martyn Roper said Hurricane Ian was a timely test of the Cayman Islands’ readiness and recovery systems.

“We have been given the all-clear from Hurricane Ian. Fortunately, the impact across all three Islands has not been as bad as expected, but it is always right to over-prepare. It has been a great test of our systems,” he said.

“HMS Medway is now in our waters, having arrived here at incredible speed in challenging seas following our call for support. It is reassuring to know how fast the ship can get to us for any future weather events. The ship will be visible off Grand Cayman for the next couple of days. The troops may come ashore later today or tomorrow and assist with relief efforts,” he said.

Portmore Mayor Leon Thomas has disclosed that there have been no report of major flooding in Portmore even as some other sections of the island have experienced adverse weather conditions since Saturday.

“We have a lot of overgrown vegetation and plastic bottles in the drains now, and the rising water levels in several drains is a cause for concern if the heavy rainfall continues into Tuesday, but there have been no reports of major flooding yet,” Mayor Thomas said.

“It’s a good thing that the Portmore Municipal Council had started drain-cleaning exercises in March, but there are several drains which fall under the ambit of the National Works Agency (NWA) that need attention.”

He listed drains in areas such as Greater Portmore, Gregory Park, Portsmouth, Watson Grove, Christian Pen and Independence City.

“These drains are the responsibility of the NWA and are in areas where the Members of Parliament (MPs) have direct responsibility to clean them. The Portmore Municipal Council didn’t get any money from the Government to clean them, we had to source our own revenue to clean the drains in Portmore, and it costs a lot of money to maintain and clean drains to be ready for the hurricane season,” Mayor Thomas added.

The Meteorological Service has maintained a flash flood warning for low-lying and flood-prone areas for the north eastern and southern parishes, effective until 5am on Tuesday.

In a release on Monday morning, the Met Service extended the flash flood warning for low-lying and flood-prone areas of St Mary, Portland, St Thomas, Kingston and St Andrew, St Catherine and Clarendon.

“We welcome any assistance to carry out drain-cleaning exercises in Portmore. In the meantime, we continue to monitor the rising water levels in the drains of the areas we have mentioned,” Mayor Thomas said.

The Met Service announced that tropical storm Ian has now been upgraded to Hurricane Ian, and is located near 18.2 degrees north and 82.0 degrees west, or 391 kilometres west-southwest of Negril Point, Jamaica.

A 17-year-old girl drown on Sunday during an outing at a creek in Wismar, Linden, Region 10.

Dead is Nazana Samaroo of Lot 33 Little Diamond Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara.

According to the police, Samaroo was on a family outing in the company of her 34-year-old mother Lizanna Anderson; 40-year-old foster father Keon McPherson and her five siblings at a creek in Wismar.

However, at about Time: 17:30h, she and her eight-year-old brother decided to go swimming and after some time he noticed that his sister who attempted several times to swim across the creek was missing and he raised an alarm.

Police said that a search of the entire area was immediately done by family and other public-spirited persons and the body of the now deceased teenager was found at the bottom of the creek.

She was escorted to the Linden Hospital Complex where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

“There were no marks of violence seen on the body.  The body is presently lying at the Pensioners Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination,” a police statement on Monday said.
