Jamaica recorded 83 new COVID-19 cases over a 24-hour period up to Friday afternoon.

There was no coronavirus-related death recorded for the one-day reporting period.

The overall coronavirus death toll in Jamaica remains at 3,262.

However, the separate death of a COVID-19 patient is under investigation by health officials.

There were 102 recoveries on the day, bringing that tally to 96,926.

The newly confirmed COVID-19 cases brought the total number on record for the island to 150,101.

Notably, the island recorded a 19.4 per cent positivity rate based on the samples that were tested on Friday.

Of the newly confirmed cases, 42 are females and 41 are males, with ages ranging from seven months to 92 years.

The case count was made up of Kingston and St Andrew (25), St Catherine (14), Manchester (12), St Ann (six), Clarendon (five), Portland (four), St Mary (four), Hanover (three), Westmoreland (three), Trelawny (two), St Elizabeth (two), St James (two), and St Thomas (one).

There are 39 moderately ill patients, four severely ill patients and five critically patients among 1,100 active cases now under observation in Jamaica.

A total of 126 COVID-19 patients are now hospitalised locally.

A gun and ammo were seized, a stolen vehicle found and seven arrested by police during exercises between Friday and Saturday morning.

North Eastern Division Intelligence Unit and North Eastern Division Task Force officers seized a firearm and 29 rounds of ammunition after responding to a report that gunmen were at Valley Road, Morvant area on Friday.

When officers arrived, they saw a group of men, one of whom allegedly pointed a firearm at them and they fired at the suspect who, reports said, dropped the firearm and escaped.

Then, early Saturday morning, Northern Division officers found a vehicle stolen in Tacarigua. The owner was outside of his home at about 1.39 am, when two armed suspects approached, announced a robbery, and made off with his silver, Toyota Fielder wagon.

The vehicle was recovered in the carpark of a building at Maloney Gardens by a team from the Arouca Crime Patrol Unit and Tunapuna CID.

Also on Saturday, three men were arrested during a roadblock in the North Central Division, three men were arrested for various offences during a roving roadblock exercise. The men, ages 22 to 29, were detained for firearm-related offences, possession of camouflage and driving without a drivers’ permit and certificate of insurance.

Another trio were arrested during a warrant exercise in the same division on Friday, for outstanding affiliation warrants amounting to $10,250.

In in the Eastern Division, a Sangre Grande woman was arrested during a road traffic exercise conducted between 4 pm and 7.30 pm. Of the 17 field sobriety tests administered, the 36-year-old was the lone offender found to be driving under the influence.

She was subsequently charged.

Barbados and Rwanda have begun talks surrounding establishing a direct airlift service with RwandAir Limited to Barbados.

Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Senator Lisa Cummins, along with officials from the ministry, met on the margins of Day two of the AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum (ACTIF) 2022, with Rwanda’s Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Charge of East African Community, Prof. Manasseh Nshuti.

During their talks, the two officials discussed the possibility of signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) regarding airlift services between the two countries.

They also discussed joint destination marketing, trade and investment opportunities, E-Government platforms, meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) and the upcoming World Travel Market.

Currently, RwandAir Limited flies from Kigali to Entebbe, Nairobi, Bujumbura, Lagos, Abuja and Accra in Africa and internationally to Dubai, China, London and Brussels.

Also in attendance at the courtesy call were: Barbados’ High Commissioner to Kenya, William A. McDonald; Chief of Staff in the Prime Minister’s Office, Jonathan Reid; Chief Executive Officer, (CEO) Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., (BTMI) Dr Jens Thraenhart; BTMI’s Chair of the Board of Directors, Shelly Williams; BTMI’s Chief Financial Officer, Craig Hinds; Honorary Consul of Barbados to Rwanda, Emery Rubagenga and Deputy CEO at Rwanda Development Board, Zephanie Niyonkuru.

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Jamaican international Leon Bailey scored a second-half equalizer to salvage a 1-1 for Aston Villa against defending champions Manchester City in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Erling Haaland scored another goal for Manchester City but it wasn’t enough this time.

Haaland took his tally to 10 goals from six games by volleying in a cross from Kevin de Bruyne in the 50th minute but then missed two chances to score a second before Villa struck back.

Reggae Boy Bailey met a low cross from Jacob Ramsey and hammered a first-time shot high into the net in the 74th to rescue a valuable point for Villa, whose manager Steven Gerrard was under heavy pressure after three straight league losses.

For City, it’s a second draw to go with four wins in the opening six games, leaving them tied for second place with Tottenham on points. Leader Arsenal have a chance to go four points clear on Sunday if they can maintain their perfect record when they travel to Manchester United.

Pep Guardiola’s City have made a habit of going two goals down before rallying, but this time it was their turn to relinquish the lead.

Haaland had been quiet in the first half but showed his predatory instincts when he came flying in at the far post to meet a pinpoint cross from De Bruyne, jumping high to side-foot the ball in.

The towering Norway striker forced two good saves from Emiliano Martinez as City pushed for a second goal.

That left the visitors open to counterattacks, though, and Ramsey had already squandered one such opportunity with a heavy touch by the time he set up Bailey for the equalizer.

Midfielder Rodri came closest to a winner for City when his shot from outside the area crept narrowly wide in the 87th.

The Jamaica Tallawahs continued their unbeaten start to the 2022 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a victory over Guyana Amazon Warriors by four wickets.

The Jamaica Tallawahs won the toss and chose to field, putting in a dominant bowling performance led by Mohammad Amir to limit the Amazon Warriors to 142/6, with captain Shimron Hetmyer leading the run-scoring with an innings of 39.

Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the Tallawahs managed to chase down the target with four balls to spare thanks to some big-hitting from captain Rovman Powell and Chris Green lower down the order.

Guyana Amazon Warriors lost both of their openers, Paul Stirling and Chandrapaul Hemraj, to Amir in the PowerPlay before Shai Hope and Hetmyer patiently began to rebuild the innings. Australian spinner Green bowled four overs and conceded a paltry 5 runs as the Tallawahs frustrated the Guyana Amazon Warrior batters with some disciplined bowling.

Romario Shepherd accelerated the innings with some big hitting, striking six boundaries in the 17 balls he faced, helping his side to 142/6.

Jamaica Tallawahs got off to a brisk start in their chase, but the Amazon Warriors utilised the spin trio of Gudakesh Motie, Imran Tahir and Tabraiz Shamsi to restrict runs and put pressure on the batters, with Tahir claiming the key wicket of Brandon King in the seventh over.

However, the Tallawahs would eventually manage to chase their total as Powell and Green combined to score 23 runs from the 18th over before reaching the target in the final over.

The win means Jamaica Tallawahs maintain their 100% start to the tournament and will now be looking to continue their good form into their next game.

FAO: World Food Prices Drop For Fifth Consecutive Month – St. Lucia Times News

World food prices have fallen for a fifth consecutive month but are still nearly eight per cent higher than a year ago, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported on Friday.

Its latest Food Price Index shows that the prices of five commodities – cereals, vegetable oil, dairy, meat and sugar – were lower in August than in July.

The Index tracks the monthly international prices of these breadbasket staples. It averaged 138.0 points last month, down nearly two per cent from July, though 7.9 per cent above the value a year before.

Ukraine exports a factor

FAO said the decline in cereal prices reflected improved production prospects in North America and Russia, and the resumption of exports from Black Sea ports in Ukraine.

A landmark agreement to unblock Ukraine grain exports amid the ongoing war was signed in July by the country, Russia, Türkiye and the UN.

Rice prices on average held steady during August, while quotations for coarse grains, such as maize, increased marginally.

Vegetable oil prices decreased by 3.3 per cent, which is slightly below the August 2021 level. FAO attributed this to increased availability of palm oil from Indonesia, due to lower export taxes, and the resumption of sunflower oil shipments from Ukraine.

High price for cheese

Although dairy prices saw a two per cent drop, they remained 23.5 per cent higher than in August 2021.

The price of cheese increased for the tenth consecutive month, though milk prices “eased” following expectations of increased supplies from New Zealand, even amid projections of lower production in Western Europe and the US.

The price of meat declined by 1.5 per cent but remained just over eight per cent higher than the value last August.

International quotations for poultry fell amid elevated export availabilities, and bovine meat prices declined due to weak domestic demand in some top exporting countries, while pig meat quotations rose.

Sugar prices also hit their lowest level since July 2021, largely due to high export caps in India and lower ethanol prices in Brazil.

Outlook for cereals and wheat

FAO has also issued its global cereal production forecast for this year, which projects a decline of nearly 40 million tonnes, or 1.4 per cent from the previous year.

The bulk of this decline mainly concerns coarse grains, with maize yields in Europe expected to drop 16 per cent below their five-year average level due to the exceptional hot and dry weather conditions affecting the continent.

By contrast, FAO expects there will be a “negligible drop” in worldwide wheat production resulting from expected record harvests in Russia and conducive weather conditions in North America.

Global rice production is also expected to decline by 2.1 percent from the all-time high reached in 2021.

Silk Boss Urged To Talk To Cops After Being Slapped By Gang Members

The Jamaica Constabulary Police wants rising dancehall artist Silk Boss to report to the Portmore Police.

Silk Boss confirmed this week that he was set up by friends and was robbed of $1.4 million that he was saving to buy a BMW car. The video showed the artist being slapped up by two men wearing Balaclava face masks. A red-faced Silk Boss can be heard pleading with the men.

In an interview with his former manager, Silk Boss had said that the men were from the Gulf Man gang in St. Catherine. He added that his pregnant baby mother was also pushed down and that the men had threatened to shoot him all while they boxed him about the face and head.

Since the incident, which surfaced via a video this week, Silk Boss has done several interviews where he confirmed that the incident occurred last month. While many of his fans have expressed concern for his safety, the artist has continued to speak on the beating and another incident where he was summoned by a reported criminal- an area Don, to perform at an event in St. Catherine where his girlfriend’s mother is from.

The artist has not said if he has reported the incident to the police, but it seems now that the police have taken interest in the statements by the artist and are calling on him to report the matter to the police.

The Jamaica Gleaner reported on Friday night that Portmore police are “appealing” to the dancehall to speak with investigators who are probing the assault.

The police said they have become aware of the video of the assault and the subsequent statements by Silk Boss, which are all cause for concern.

Silk Boss is asked to report to Portmore Police via the Braeton Parkway station in Portmore, St Catherine. Some fans are also urging the dancehall artiste to report the matter to police since his life might be in danger.

L’orgueil des champions : le grimpeur équatorien Richard Carapaz a remporté en solitaire la quatorzième étape au sommet de la Pandera samedi en Andalousie, alors que Primoz Roglic a repris près d’une minute au classement général sur un Remco Evenepoel diminué.

Dans une étape soporifique qui s’est terminée en feu d’artifice, le champion olympique a résisté au retour de Primoz Roglic et de Miguel Angel Lopez en conservant huit secondes d’avance sur la ligne d’arrivée.

“Dans le final, on savait que ça allait être une étape difficile et importante. On voulait répéter ce qu’on avait fait la dernière fois (sur la 12e étape). J’avais bien étudié la montée. Ca me donne beaucoup de confiance pour la suite”, a célébré l’Équatorien après la course.

Il faut dire que le rôle de chasseur d’étape lui va comme un gant : seul rescapé de l’échappée de dix coureurs, Carapaz a tenu pour remporter sa deuxième étape sur la boucle espagnole 2022, deux jours après son tour de force au sommet des Penas Blancas.

Son accélération au train à huit kilomètres du sommet a cloué le reste du groupe à l’avant, dont le Français Clément Champoussin (AG2R) puis le vétéran Luis Leon Sanchez (Bahrain).

Destitué de son rôle de leader de la formation Ineos après avoir concédé près de vingt minutes au général après onze étapes, Carapaz se console avec une nouvelle victoire de prestige dans la chaîne de montagne de la Sierra Nevada.

S’il a lâché ses gants de course pour ce week-end, Remco Evenepoel a de son côté paru bien seul dans l’ascension finale.

Privé de son coéquipier de luxe Julian Alaphilippe depuis mercredi et victime d’une chute “sans conséquences” selon lui jeudi dans une descente, le Belge de 22 ans n’a pas été en mesure de suivre l’attaque portée par “Rogla” à quatre kilomètres de l’arrivée, dans les portions à 12% du col de première catégorie perchées à près de 2000 mètres d’altitude.

“Aujourd’hui (samedi, NDLR), je n’avais pas mes meilleurs jambes. Je ne pouvais pas accélérer lorsque Roglic est parti. Après, j’ai encore de l’avance au général, il n’y a pas d’inquiétude à avoir. J’espère que ce sera ma plus mauvaise journée sur ces trois semaines”, a tenté de dédramatiser Evenepoel à l’arrivée de l’étape.

Le train mené par son coéquipier Ilan van Wilder au pied du col n’a pas empêché Primoz Roglic, Miguel Angel Lopez ou encore Enric Mas de le décrocher à quatre kilomètres de l’arrivée.

Huit jours après avoir revêtu le maillot rouge, le leader de la formation Quick-Step a concédé 48 secondes au général sur son dauphin Primoz Roglic (Jumbo) et vingt secondes sur Enric Mas (Movistar).

“C’est une super journée pour nous. Je me sens mieux, on va faire la course maintenant”, a prévenu le leader de la formation néerlandaise samedi en guise d’avertissement pour la suite.

Car “Le petit cannibale” ne possède plus qu’1 minute et 49 secondes d’avance sur le triple tenant du titre slovène et 2 minutes et 43 secondes sur l’Espagnol.

Dimanche, Evenepoel est attendu au tournant alors que le peloton se mesure à l’étape reine de l’édition 2022 de la Vuelta avec l’arrivée au terrible sommet du Hoya de la Mora avec 19,3 kilomètres d’ascension à 7,9% de moyenne et 2500 mètres d’altitude : rien que ça.
