On Sunday, October 2, the St. Lucia Olympic Committee (SLOC) Inc. hosted the local leg of this year’s TAFISA World Walking Day event, which saw nearly 50 people participating.

Defying the mid-morning heat, athletes and officials from various local sports federations participated in Sunday’s walk, which took the form of a relay. This year, Saint Lucia joined around 86 countries across all continents in the annual global relay.

Sunday’s walk began at 10:00 a.m. promptly, taking the following route: Starting outside the Castries Market, continuing up the John Compton Highway, turning left onto Mandela Drive and onto the St. Mary’s College entrance, before doubling back on Mandela Drive and ending outside Olympic House.

Along the way, the baton was passed on to point persons, with each person pledging their federation’s support for the walk and promoting a chosen cause.

Makeba Alcide, Chairperson of the Athletes Commission, said the walk saw good representation from the various national federations.

“We worked in collaboration with SLOC Inc. to host this event,” she said. “We had a really great turnout from our national federations. We had parents, athletes and well-wishers who came together so we could celebrate World Walking Day. Initially, we wanted two persons from each of the twenty national federations; however, some federations had more. So we had about 50 participants, including other people who simply joined in.”

On the importance of walking, Alcide said: “Walking is very important. We just saw during the height of COVID-19 that many people who wanted to do something took up walking. So for us to be able to celebrate World Walking Day with the rest of the world was a wonderful thing.”

Star table tennis player, De Andre Calderon, said the event also served as a social event to meet other athletes.

“I think the walk was a great success. I saw many athletes from different sports, including my fellow table tennis players,” Calderon said. “I think walking is very important for mental health, exercise and just fun, in general. So I advise people to walk regularly.”

Track and field athlete, Immanuel Francis, described the walk as “a very enjoyable experience”, and looks forward to similar events.

“I felt the energy around me and I felt it was enjoyed by my peers and other participants,” stated Francis. “It was a learning experience for all of us and I hope that everyone will continue to participate in the future.”

Meanwhile, track and field athlete and rugby player, Joy Edward, also enjoyed Sunday’s walk, noting her association’s choice of cause.

“It was a great walk. We walked for peace because it’s very important in sports. Without peace, you can lose focus mentally,” she explained.

Launched in 1991, TAFISA World Walking Day has provided a simple and fun way to be physically active and celebrate Sport for All against the global crisis of physical inactivity. Over three decades, millions of people from over 160 countries have made it a habit of walking together on the first Sunday in October each year, turning it into World Walking Day.

As the leading International Sport for All Association, TAFISA strives to raise awareness of the benefits of Sport for All and physical activity.

Barbados’ Triathlete Matthew Wright has come out on top to nab the gold medal in Jordan to make history for Barbados and himself.

The previously 308th-ranked athlete on the World Triathlon rankings jumped 115 places to 193rd with this monumental win on the world stage. Wright was very impressive in the 5th Aqaba Asian Cup held in Jordan on Saturday, October 1, 2022.

The event which comprised a pool of 52 triathletes from across the world, started at the B12 Beach Club in Aqaba with a 1500-meter swim. Wright exited the water in 6th position with a swim time of 18 min 44 sec, just 4 seconds behind the leader Maciej Bruzdziak from Poland, in a time of 18:44 minutes where he slotted himself into the 15-man lead pack of the 8-lap, 40 km bike leg. With 2 laps to go, Wright and training partner Lestyn Harrett from Great Britain, attempted to make a break away from the pack, eventually opening a 10-second gap at one point. This effort proved futile however, Wright dismounted the bike in 4th place, clocking the 3rd quickest bike split in a time of 1 hr 1 min 55 sec, and quickly transitioned to enter the 10km 4-lap run in second place.

A group of six quickly formed during the first 2.5km lap on the run however, led by the strong pace of Harrett, the group whittled down to just four by lap two, with Harrett, Wright, Jason Tai Long NG of Hong Kong, and Cedric Osterholt of Germany. The rapid pace and increasing heat led to Tai Long NG dropping back, leaving training partners Wright and Harrett to battle for the win. After multiple attacks trying to break each other on the last lap, the two athletes who train at the National Triathlon Performance Centre in Cardiff, Wales, were only split by a hair. With 250m to go, Wright landed the killer blow, opening up a 10m gap on Harrett, and sprinted to the line to take the gold with a run time of 30 min 51 sec and a total time of 1 hour 51 minutes and 16 seconds with Harrett and NG, taking second and third place respectively.

Wright, Barbados’ top triathlete, has been a constant fixture on the triathlon circuit racing with the best of the best triathletes from across the world for the last few years. So this first-place finish coming off a commendable 17th-place finish at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, Wright has finally made his breakthrough at a World Triathlon event.

Wright has expressed his thanks for the support received from the Barbados Olympic Association, The Arts and Sports Foundation, and the Barbados Federation of Island triathletes, for making the races and performances possible.

It will now be a quick turnaround for Wright as he prepares for a second Asian Triathlon Cup in Sarmakand, Uzbekistan this weekend Saturday, October 8.

Bob Marley’s grandkid slams critics of her White Lives Matter T-shirt Loop Cayman Islands

Black Immigrant Daily News

Selah Marley, the granddaughter of reggae legend Bob Marley, has come under fire for wearing a ‘White Lives Matter’ T-shirt at rapper Kanye West’s fashion show on Monday.

But the 23-year-old model has fired back at her critics, arguing that no one can “coax her” or “bully me into being who you want me to be”.

Marley is the daughter of singer Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley, Bob Marley’s son.

Since photographs and videos of her wearing the Kanye West-designed shirt went viral, Selah has been the subject of much backlash online.

She also posted a video showing herself talking and joking with Kanye West, who recently changed his rap name to ‘Ye’.

Selah captioned the video, “Love you Kanye West”, and subsequently posted three videos in total, which showed her wearing the controversial item, further adding fire to the rage among online users.

The criticisms are due to the ‘White Lives Matter’ slogan being associated with the Ku Klux Klan and anti-Black sentiments in the US.

The slogan also contrasts that of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement, which was formed to promote the cause of racial equality for African Americans.

The young Marley’s wearing of the T-shirt was largely viewed by social media users as going against her grandfather’s lyrics, as his songs have been used as a mantra for primarily black persons fighting against injustice globally

“I absolutely expect this from Kanye, but Selah Marley has disgraced the name and memory of her grandfather Bob Marley and everything her mother stands for,” wrote one Twitter user.

Added the Twitter user: “He (Bob Marley) was the world’s black freedom fighter. If you don’t know, her mother is the legendary Lauryn Hill.”

Another user of that platform wrote: “The fact that Kanye had Selah MARLEY walk in that shirt disturbs my soul on a greater level.

“Bob Marley was a black revolutionary who spoke about injustice through his music. That legacy shouldn’t be entangled with mess.”

Responding on Tuesday to the fury she purportedly generated, Selah took to her Instagram Story, where she disclosed: “The past 24 hours has allowed me to realise that most of y’all are stuck in a hive mind mentality.”

Continuing, she said: “You do what the group tells you to do and think what the group tells you to think.

“Witnessing someone break free from ‘the agenda’ sends you all into such a panic that you will do whatever it takes to force them back into the box that you feel they should exist in.

“All moral and empathy is eliminated due to the fact that you feel justified by your emotions. The victim becomes the victimiser.

“You cannot bully me, manipulate me, or coax me into silence. Nor will you bully me into being who you want me to be. “I don’t care how many tweets you make, DMs you send, or articles you write.”

The young Marley explained further that “nothing” she does is without “deep thought and intention”, and she will be speaking soon on her experience.

“Throughout all of the chaos, I have yet to speak on my experience. If you know me, you know that nothing I do is without deep thought and intention. Wait till you hear what I have to say,” she concluded.

In a follow-up post on her Instagram Stories, Selah appeared to have messaged Kanye.

Posting a screenshot of the message, Selah captioned it by stating: “I think he’s sleeping, but I’m ready for us to have the conversation.

“Tell @kanyewest to text me when he wakes up so we can continue to move this conversation forward & provide the necessary clarity, depth & healing that we are collectively in need of. Love you guys regardless.”

Selah, in her message to the American rapper, said: “I think that what we did has obviously created a lot of conversation and I would like us to continue that conversation.

“I love taking risks and embracing freedom, but in this case, I think we can continue to discuss the depth behind our decisions to show the purity of our intentions and provide healing to our community.

“Love you so much. Let’s keep this going – in a healthy way.”

The messages and subsequent postings from the young Marley proved to do little to soothe the outrage among social media users, primarily among black Americans.

“The miseducation of Selah Marley,” said one user, whose tweet was seemingly a reference to Selah’s mother’s Grammy Award-winning album, ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’.

“She totally didn’t understand her grandpa’s assignment. #redemptionsong. She forgot who she came from #bobmarley #freeyourselffrommentalslavery…,” tweeted another.
