UPP Hosts Successful Public Forum in Atlanta

UPP Hosts Successful Public Forum in Atlanta

The UPP hosted a public forum in Atlanta, GA last Thursday, as part of the Diaspora Connect Roadshow.  The first stop on this three city US tour featured four panelists:  Political Leader Harold Lovell, Deputy Political Leader Jamale Pringle, UPP Candidate for St. Mary’s North, Johnathan Joseph and UPP Candidate for St. Phillip South, Sherfield Bowen.

This initiative held under the theme“ Partnership for Investment and Nation Building,” targeted Antiguan and Barbudan nationals and those linked to the country by friendship, business, education, interest or affinity.

“This format aligns with the UPP’s philosophy and practice of tapping into people-centred ideas. We want to empower Antiguans and Barbudans in the Diaspora who have the means – and the interest – to invest in their country and to contribute to nation building,” said Harold Lovell.

The Political Leader also announced that the Linking Experts and Advocates in the Diaspora (LEAD) project will be established to engage highly qualified experts, professionals and advocates, to tap into their skills and expertise.

“It is important to engage the Diaspora in national conversations since many of UPP plans and programs will also affect those who have an interest in returning home or establishing a second home, “ Lovell said.

Going forward Lovell will make several announcements about a structure that will facilitate Diaspora Direct Investments (DDI), as well as special investment packages.

Several nationals also used the opportunity to express their grievances and discontent with the ABLP Government’s continued dire performance in office. They spoke of issues such as the inadequate supply of water, increase in crime, a lack of development in the business landscape, the Government’s persistence in using temporary solutions when fixing potholes, and many more. Drawing on their professional experience  in healthcare, agriculture, business and other disciplines they provided in-depth, knowledgeable analyses of problems and workable solutions.

“The discussions at the forum were of a very high quality, demonstrating the tremendous intellectual capital that remains untapped, undeveloped and under-utilised throughout the Diaspora.  These contributions will be given serious consideration by the UPP leadership as we finalize our plans and policies,” Lovell said.

A similar forum will be held in New York on Monday October 3rd. These programs are livestreamed and available for viewing on UPP’s YouTube channel.

PM Browne dismisses allegations by Everette Christian over US$200m

Black Immigrant Daily News

A gavel and a name plate with the engraving Lawsuit

Everett Christian, a retired banker with 30-plus years in the financial sector, says he is reliably informed that the Gaston Browne Administration used the funds from the July 2021 bond to pay debts and reported this to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Only recently, the United Progressive Party became aware that Government had “secretly” floated a 10-year bond for EC$540 million, with a 4 per cent interest rate, which had been taken up by Resilience Partners Incorporated.

During Thursday’s sitting of Parliament, Prime Minister Browne denied receiving those funds. And he proffered what some pundits say was an unrealistic explanation for the bond being listed among the country’s debt stock on page 102 of the 2022 Budget Estimates.

But according to Christian’s sources, during the IMF Article IV consultations earlier this year, the Government informed the agency that the bond funds were used to pay outstanding debts and finance the country’s deficit, among other uses.

Christian says the Browne Administration is “lying through its teeth.” He recalls Lennox Weston, the de facto Minister of Finance, boasting that a half-billion dollars had already been secured and that the Government was not waiting to go “cap in hand” to beg any lending agency – namely the IMF.

Despite this, the Prime Minister is seeking to persuade the Nation that the July 2021 bond and the bond that he announced in February this year – and said had been cancelled – are one and the same.

But Christian is highly skeptical.

The former banker says the Browne Administration needs to be honest with the taxpayers and let them know exactly what the money was used for – since what he heard coming from the PM’s mouth does not make any sense.

Summing up the situation, Christian says this is a case in which Cabinet Members have been caught with their “hands in the cookie jar;” and now, they are trying to find the most plausible explanation for this debacle.

According to Christian, Browne was attempting to explain the inexplicable, and so his explanation appears to have further muddied the water.

Browne accuses Opposition of being behind school break-ins and vandalism, with UPP saying his claim shows desperation

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

REAL NEWS: Prime Minister Gaston Browne appears to be blaming the Opposition for the recent spate of break-ins and vandalism at the Nation’s public schools, suggesting that these incidents are politically motivated and meant to gain political mileage.

Browne claims that this is the same playbook deployed by the Progressive Labour Movement (PLM) to bring down the Labour Party Government under V.C. Bird in the 1970s.

He claims that, while government schools continue to be the target of thieves and vandals, this is not the same for private schools.

It appears that Browne is unaware that several private institutions have also been broken into and robbed, including the Baptist Academy, which has burglar bars installed on its buildings, and the St. Peter’s Academy, from which the thieves stole money.

Even churches have fallen prey to thieves, as well as scores of businesses and households. In fact, many residents have accused the Police of failing to report the extent of the situation in order to give the impression that the incidence of crime is low.

Meanwhile, Browne says his government will resist any excess coming from his opponents, and he is prepared to use the Police and Army to patrol the Nation’s schools and bring the perpetrators to justice.

He says he is confident that someone will be caught and will reveal the names of the politicians behind these nefarious acts.

Commenting on the Prime Minister’s accusations, a woman notes that when crime spiked under the UPP Administration – with one year recording 19 murders – the Antigua Labour Party rejoiced and used it to their political advantage.

However, she says, at no time did the UPP publicly state that the opposition Labour Party was behind the increase in crime, although many people believed, then, that politics had, indeed, played a part.

She says the Labour Party is familiar with that playbook; this is why Prime Minister Browne, the head of that party, is making the situation political. “As a man speaketh, so does he also think,” the woman says.

In the meanwhile, UPP officials say that Browne’s unfounded accusations show that “desperation has set in” and, as usual, he is “trying to find scapegoats for his Administration’s failures.”

Cummings: No problem with Nunez-Tesheira’s challenge

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

News

PNM general secretary Foster Cummings –

PNM general secretary Foster Cummings said there is absolutely no reason why former government minister Karen Nunez-Tesheira cannot contest any post in the party’s internal elections on December 4.

On Sunday, Nunez-Tesheira signalled her intention to challenge the Prime Minister for the PNM’s leadership.

Dr Rowley has been PNM political leader since 2010. He defeated Pennelope Beckles in 2014 to retain the post. Rowley was re-elected unopposed in the PNM’s internal elections in 2018.

Though he hinted at retiring from politics after the party won the August 10, 2020 general election, Rowley subsequently indicated he would stand for re-election as PNM leader this year.

Efforts to contact Rowley for comment on Nunez-Tesheira’s challenge were unsuccessful

Asked about Nunez-Tesheira’s challenge to Rowley, Cummings said, “All members of the PNM are free to offer themselves for any position in these internal elections.

Nunez-Tesheira said as a lifetime party member, she is eligible to conest the elections.

Former minister in the ministry of finance Mariano Browne welcomed Nunez-Tesheira’s bid for the PNM’s leadership.

“All credit to her for putting her hat in the ring. She has a lot of hope.”

But Browne declined to say whether or not he would contest any of the posts in the elections.

Political analyst Shane Mohammed believed it was a good development for the PNM for Nunez-Tesheira to challenge Rowley.

“She is very versed in current affairs. She is very versed in international relations.”

Mohammed said, “I think she (Nunez-Tesheira) is a breath of fresh air.”

He added that competition in politics is good.
