WATCH: Trailer, bus crash sparks big online debate; who was wrong? Loop Jamaica

A two-vehicle crash late last week reportedly Spanish Town Road in St Andrew, which involved a trailer truck and a Toyota Coaster coaster bus with passengers, has left persons stunned and questioning who was to be blamed for the collision.

Thursday’s traffic mishap appeared to leave several persons with at least minor injuries, but it is unclear whether there were hospitalisations or any fatalities.

CCTV footage that was obtained by Loop News of the crash showed several cars travelling along a wet thoroughfare.

At the same time, a pick-up truck is seen leaving what appeared to be the parking lot of a popular business establishment.

Further on in the video, the green Toyota Coaster bus can be seen travelling on the roadway while the trailer truck slowly makes it way across the roadway towards the entrance of the parking lot to the business establishment.

Instead of slowing down, the Coaster bus slammed into the side of the trailer truck as it (the trailer) entered the gateway to the business establishment.

Another video that appeared to have been recorded shortly after the collision, showed several persons exiting the Coaster bus. It is not known whether it was a licensed public passenger vehicle (PPV).

Some passengers appeared to be limping, while others assisted fellow occupants to exit the bus.

The question on some viewers’ minds was who was at fault for causing the motor vehicle collision.

“The Coaster (bus) had enough time to stop,” said Instagram user, mick_876.

“Di bus driver drop a sleep or summn. Smh!,” said bornlucky22, another Instagram user.

Lavoye_da_truth commented: “Di (bus) driver did haffi a sleep cause…”

In response to her views, farmer_777777 stated: “@lavoye_da_truth nope. The road wet n (and) maybe the truck man should wait. D truck wrong.”

Sek_876, in turn, responded to his views by sharing, “The truck start turn off (when) the bus way up the road.

“It’s just this camera angle isn’t showing it fully. The bus driver was clearly not paying attention. And the road being wet is irrelevant because you should drive according to road conditions,” he argued.

Instagram user, shenb_12, who said a family member of hers was seated in the Coaster bus at the time of the crash, also blamed the Coaster driver.

“@farmer_777777 lol my sister was in the bus and the bus driver is wrong and he was definitely speeding and obviously u can see in the video…

“The truck was already coming straight out of another lane, so the bus driver was trying to beat the truck,” she opined.

Another Instagrammer, venom_unit, also came to the defence of the trailer driver.

“A 40ft container is attached to the trailer. The trailer head already make it cross the road, so 40ft of container already turn across the road…

“The bus nuh brake or swing mean him never see the BIG old container attached???” he questioned.

But another Instragram user said the trailer driver should also be blamed for the collision.

That user, ox.unapologetically.xo, declared: “@venom_unit the truck driver is wrong!”

Continuing, he said: “Coaster has the right way. Truck driver turned too slow and didn’t have enough time to clear the road.

“The Coaster is also at fault for going too fast… He should have been able to stop, but I figure his brakes failed…

“You can’t assume people going to stop. You have to drive knowing that your next action won’t cause an accident. He (the truck driver) should have let the Coaster go by before turning,” stated the social media user.

Gregvi74 agreed that the trailer driver should take some of the blame for the collision.

“Busy road that and him a turn so slow pan it. Yes, the Coaster bus man could a stop, but the trailer driver should a know better,” he opined.

EYEWITNESS: Looking at …Agriculture

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: INews Guyana

Well…if this is October, it gotta be “Agriculture Month”. Back in the day – of Cheddi and Burnham – October evoked the “great” 1917 October Russian Revolution that was supposed to usher in the “new Communist World Order”. But not even Lenin’s successor, Putin, has mentioned that titbit as he desperately tries to fend off a Western-backed push to oust him from power!!

The Russian Revolutionaries also had agriculture high on their agenda. In accordance with their communist dogma, they pushed collectivisation of farms which were owned by farmers, called “kulaks”. The kulaks rebelled, and in the process of collectivisation, thousands were killed directly – mostly shot on the spot – during the 1930s. About 2 million were forcibly deported to the Far North and Siberia. They were called “enemies of the people,” as well as swine, dogs, cockroaches, scum, vermin, filth, garbage, half-animals, apes!!

Collectivised agriculture was also tried in the 1950s in Communist China, but it failed there also. So, it’s reassuring to your Eyewitness – who’s of strong peasant stock – that the Government hasn’t mentioned “collectivisation” in its announced stress on agriculture!! All the “old dogs” are gone, so no new tricks had to be taught!!

As usual, we have a theme for the month: “Championing food security: through innovation, investment and resilience”. Yup…hunger’s now a “security” issue!! So, now the farmer can see himself on par with those brave soldiers defending us from those nasty Venezuelans and Surinamese who’re lurking to seize chunks of our motherland!! But seriously folks, the war in Ukraine plus the dramatic changes in weather patterns – brought on by climate change – should’ve driven home the fact that food shortages are as much a threat to our lives as bullets. Of course, when you simultaneously face both threats, like in Tigray, you’re up the creek without a paddle.

Anyhow, you’d think that with “agri-business” invented here and the West Indies – what do you think “plantations” were?? – with sugar, we’d be ahead of the game. But funding was always the constraint after independence; we couldn’t very well go back to slavery and indentureship, could we?? So, now that we’ve thrown off that albatross, better late than never!!

Your Eyewitness believes we have a good game plan for our Intermediate Savannahs with new crops like soya, corn and wheat. But he believes it would be better to lease out abandoned sugar lands to workers.

More efficient use for these lands!!

…British racism

This story on the Kwasi Kwarteng, the first Black Chancellor of Britain, is copied without comment from the BBC: Kwarteng called out the Mirror on Twitter with a screenshot of the story about him which erroneously used a picture of another man outside a Treasury building.

“That isn’t me,” tweeted the Chancellor.

The story, headlined “Kwasi Kwarteng says he had to do ‘something different’ after causing budget chaos”, instead pictured Bernard Mensah, the President of International for Bank of America.

Mr Mensah had been among representatives of US banks meeting the Chancellor at the Treasury on Wednesday.

The Mirror said in a statement: “This morning, a picture in a story about Kwasi Kwarteng was wrongly captioned on the Mirror website. This was a terrible error, and we apologise to Mr Kwarteng and all our readers. The Mirror has a long history of working against racism, and we will redouble our efforts on this.”

The wrong image appeared underneath a link promoting Black History Month stories on the Mirror website.

Hornsey and Wood Green Conservative Chairman Ben Obese-Jecty said: “Good to see the Daily Mirror kicking off its coverage of Black History Month with this “they-all-look-the-same-don’t-they?” clanger.

“You’d think, given the coverage he’s received this week, that most people in the press would know what Kwasi Kwarteng looked like…”

Indonesia: At Least 125 Dead In Football Stadium Crush – St. Lucia Times News

At least 125 people have died in a crush at an Indonesian football match that has become one of the world’s worst stadium disasters.

Hundreds were also hurt in aftermath of home team Arema FC’s loss to bitter rivals at the overcrowded stadium late on Saturday in Malang, East Java.

The crush took place after police tear-gassed fans who invaded the pitch.

As panic spread, thousands surged towards Kanjuruhan stadium’s exits, where many suffocated.

Fifa, the world’s governing football body, states that no “crowd control gas” should be carried or used by stewards or police at matches.

The organisation’s president Gianni Infantino said it was “a dark day for all involved in football and a tragedy beyond comprehension”.

One eyewitness told the BBC that police had fired numerous tear gas rounds “continuously and fast” after the situation with fans became “tense”.

Next to one exit gate a hole smashed through the wall testifies to the desperation to escape the crush that developed. There are candles next to the gate, put there by supporters to remember the victims.

The doors themselves are slanted outwards, a sign of the sheer level of force from the inside.

‘It had gotten anarchic’ – Police

Indonesian officials at one stage put the death toll in the disaster as high at 174 people, but this was later revised downwards.

President Joko Widodo has ordered that all matches in Indonesia’s top league must be stopped until an investigation has been carried out.

“It’s been running smoothly. We haven’t had any complaints of accidents.”

Asked if he thinks that Bajans were eagerly anticipating the return to the first in-person Walk for the Cure since the two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, he agreed wholeheartedly saying, “very much so!”

In respect to numbers, Inspector Cox said that from his viewpoint, “I believe Barbadians were looking forward to this because the numbers to us looking even greater than before.”

As to any issues along the route, he only pointed out that there was some traffic build-up in some areas due to the road closures, but he said that that should have been expected.

Ambulance responded to one call Loop Barbados

Black Immigrant Daily News

Barbadians who embarked upon the 2022 Walk for the Cure made it without medical attention or intervention for the most part.

Research and Planning Officer of the Barbados Fire Service Andrew Taylor was pleased with the outcome of today’s CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank Walk for the Cure which saw thousands of persons celebrating the 20th year of this fundraiser activity.

He told Loop News:

“I would say it was pretty much incident-free. The ambulance that was following the crowd from the start. They would have responded to one incident. But so far, no other major incidents were reported to us.”

The ambulance rushed through Waterford around 5:16 pm.

Most people wore comfortable walking or running shoes, but Loop saw some people changing shoes, mashing down their shoes or even holding their sneakers in their hands during the route from the Everton Weekes roundabout in Warrens to the National Botanical Gardens. One or two people seemed to catch cramp and sat to massage it out as well. While others were just so grateful to see the water station strategically located along Waterford Bottom to help them stay hydrated that they ran happily to the distributors with outstretched arms.

Despite the showers of rain around 4:30 pm that bathed the masses and turned the pink shirts almost red, there weren’t slips and falls or injuries reported as well.

When asked if he thought that Bajans came out more prepared for today’s walk than in the past, Fire Officer Taylor added, “Yes and no, because we left a lot of people behind also, but yes for the most part, I think people were just excited to be back out again and do the walk.”

Liz Truss reconnaît des erreurs de…

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Guadeloupe FranceAntilles

Newsmaker… Week: Nation stunned by two dramatic student deaths Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

This week’s featured development as Newsmaker of the Week just ended are the killings of two school children in contrasting circumstances within less than 48 hours, which left the nation stunned.

One incident highlighted the continued indiscipline of students which has been grappling the nation’s schools, which many suggest has been a spill over of the wider crime endemic that has long been engulfing the nation.

The other tragic killing of a teenager was a case of mistaken identity, as the triggerman was the victim’s own father who mistook his son for an early-morning intruder. The incident was yet another indication of the fear of citizens relative to the crime situation locally, where over 1,100 persons have been slain so far this year.

The victims relative to the fatal incidents are: 15-year-old Raheem Shaw, a grade 11 student of Wolmer’s Boys’ School in Kingston; and 16-year-old Michion Campbell, a fifth form student of Kingston Technical High School, also in Kingston.

According to police reports, young Raheem, who resided in Hellshire, St Catherine, was shot at his home by his 51-year-old father who mistook him for an intruder early on Wednesday.

It was reported that about 3:15 am, the teenager’s mother awoke to the sound of the front gate and grille to the premises being opened, and alerted her husband, a licensed firearm holder.

The man armed himself and ventured into the living room, from where he reportedly heard the front door being opened, and discharged three rounds through the door.

Checks subsequently revealed that it was his son who was outside the door, and the boy had been shot.

Raheem Shaw

Raheem was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Days after the teen’s death, there are still more questions than answers as to why Raheem was outside the family house at that hour of the morning.

The now grief-stricken father was interviewed by the police in the presence of his attorney, Peter Champagnie KC, on Thursday.

The scene of the shooting of Raheem Shaw in Hellshire, St Catherine on Wednesday.

Earlier on Wednesday, grief counselling sessions were held for students and teachers at Wolmer’s Boys’ School, where Raheem was a sub-prefect.

He was described by the school’s fifth form coordinator as a dedicated, brilliant and kind student, who was an aspiring businessman and inventor.

Principal of the school, Dwight Pennycooke, remembered Shaw as an avid basketball lover. The administrator also lauded the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders for providing support to the students who were devastated by Raheem’s passing.

By Thursday afternoon, another report emerged of another student, Michion Campbell, being killed.

A schoolmate of hers, who reportedly inflicted the deadly wounds, is a 17-year-old girl. She is now in police custody.

Reports are that Michion and the fellow grade 11 student were at school when a dispute developed between them just before 3pm.

Indications are that a fight ensued, and the two girls were injured in the process, with Michion receiving stab wounds to her neck and face.

They two schoolers were taken to the hospital, where Michion succumbed to her injuries and the other child was treated and released into the custody of the police.

A thick cloud of gloom hovered over the Kingston Technical High School campus on Friday, as several grief counsellors reached out to students and teachers at the institution following Michion’s dramatic death.

“The school is still in shock; we are very saddened by the very unfortunate incident,” said Principal Malton Campbell on Friday.

Michion Campbell

He told Loop News that 20 grief counsellors from the Ministry of Education and Youth were providing support to the students, staff and parents.

Campbell said the incident was a “wake-up call” for stakeholders in the education system to ensure that “all our children are equipped with the necessary skills and tools to resolve conflicts, because we know we have to cater to students who come from communities that have different issues with crime and violence.”

Despite the incident, he said Kingston Technical High is a disciplined and safe school.

The scene of the fatal stabbing at Kingston Technical High School in downtown Kingston on Thursday afternoon.

“We have never had any incident like this at this institution in the last three years,” said Campbell, adding that external factors may have resulted in the fatal stabbing on Thursday.

He did not elaborate on what those external factors were believed to have been.

For his part, Member of Parliament (MP) for Central Kingston, Donovan Williams, described Michion’s killing as being tragic.

Donovan Williams

“You know we need to go back to the days when the schools, the homes and the churches are seen as the major agents of socialisation, (and) places were our children can feel safe,” he said.

The deaths of the two schoolchildren over the course of two days generated contrasting views across social media.

In relation to Raheem’s killing, some persons sympathised with his father, but others suggested that he should be held accountable for his actions as a licensed firearm holder.

“If the father isn’t charged then the police force is a joke,” declared Facebook user, Gud Luk Boss.

“Firearm training clearly states that u (you) r (are) not supposed to discharge ur firearm unless ur life is in imminent danger. The fact that the person was outside behind a door is clear violation of that rule,” he argued.

“Did he give a warning to who was outside?” he questioned.

Michelle McCalla Bles, in response to those comments, said: “Gud Luk Boss the way how Jamaica is now, people just a kill people.

“He (Raheem’s father) couldn’t do better. It’s just a pity he (Raheem) died.”

Sonia Hunt commented: “It’s an accident that could have happened to anyone.

“The way things are happening in the country every day… you have to be on you pees and ques…. It is so sad… SIP sweet boy,” she wrote.

Said Stacey Ann Reid: “At 3 o’clock inna di maaning 15 years old, weh di… him a come from?!!!

“Parents more than likely didn’t even know him not in the house, and wouldn’t be expecting that he would be the one coming in. OMGGGGG!!!! Parents going to be tormented by guilt and if mi did know. Sooo sad all around.”

For the comments relative to Michion’s death, there was outrage towards the reoccurring issue of violence in schools.

“How can you blame teachers from taking up different jobs or migrating from these kind of students?” questioned Roxanne Gordon, a Facebook user.

“They (the students) can only fight and don’t know s**t in class. You don’t see these (types of incidents) in the schools where children want to excel,” she added.

In response to her remarks, Merline Richards stated: “Roxanne Gordon, not agreeing with this action, but this is happening too much in schools across the globe, so run from schools in Jamaica to USA or UK won’t solve the problem.

“Where are the parents for these children? What about the homes they are coming from? We need to take responsibility for our children’s actions and stop placing it on the Government,” she suggested.

Emerald Destiny, however, agreed with Gordon’s comments.

“Roxanne Gordon, I agree with you. This is not happening at Immaculate, Campion, Wolmer’s and Andrews, to name the few,” she claimed.

Yvonne Griffiths commented: “How we got here is a tragedy. One young life gone and the other ruined.

“Why if they’re fighting weapon come in? Is like we are so prone to such extreme violence and over-reaction. I don’t care how old the attacker is, she should be punished! My deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. God help us!”

For his part, social media user, Vassell Meka, described the death of Michion as a “sad situation”.

Continuing, he said: “We need to add social, emotional learning in schools in Jamaica.

“… And also… facilities for student who have behavioural problems. People forget that mental illness can be behavioural as well.

“Some of these kids who are out in public schools should not be in public school. They need therapeutic schools,” stated the social media user.
