Where did the Browne Administration spend loan monies, asks Bowen, noting that a forensic audit will be needed to trace funds

Black Immigrant Daily News

REAL NEWS- The United Progressive Party (UPP) Candidate for St. Phillip’s South is shocked that the amount of money racked up in loans by the Gaston Browne Administration cannot be seen on the economic, infrastructural or social landscape.

Sherfield Bowen says the people are struggling and the country’s infrastructure is failing, and it is unconscionable that multiple loans have been taken out while these issues have remained neglected.

He says the amount of money borrowed should have created a big spin-off, leading to the opening of new businesses and significantly boosting the economy.

Bowen, who is an attorney-at-law and a certified accountant, says any new administration will face a difficult task in determining how the loan funds were spent, and is likely to meet a chaotic financial situation.

Therefore, a UPP Administration will have to commission a forensic audit to locate these monies, he says.

LETTER: A response to ‘Serpent’s’ prayer call

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

Mr Editor,

Quite recently  I heard Algernon ‘ Serpent’ Watts encouraging all believers to turn their prayers and praises up, because ” This election nar go normal.”

Whilst this call is as admirable as it is noble,  I would like to borrow space in your very widely read outlet to remind ‘ Serpent’ etal that this should be a way of life.

This clarion call should not only be issued in the run-up to an election. Otherwise, it comes across as a means of flattering God in a quest to gain   favour from Him; and He cannot be mocked.

God knows our hearts, so calling for prayers and aligning yourselves with the church  at this time will not cut it.

God is looking for genuine repentance; which members of the United Progressive Party  ( UPP) needs to do.

God is looking for genuine commitment- He is looking for those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth.

A few years ago God entrusted the running of the affairs of the nation to the UPP,  but that administration compromised- It failed to correct those who abused their office- it failed to acknowledge  God in all things- Of all these shortcomings  that organization must repent.

Who knows? Perhaps God will favour  you again.

( Observing from afar)

Symister says ALP’s attempt to pad Barbuda Voters List with Antiguan construction workers will be challenged

Black Immigrant Daily News

Symister

Attorney-at-law Leon Chaku Symister says that attempts by the Antigua Labour Party to pad the Barbuda voters list with Antiguan workers will be challenged.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced that construction workers who commute to Barbuda daily to work on the Peace Love and Happiness (PLH) project will be allowed to vote on the sister-island in the upcoming general elections.

The Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM), which raised concerns and objections to this move, has been monitoring registration on the island, and said earlier that nothing untoward was taking place with the voters’ list.

However, Symister says there have been recent reports of Antiguan workers registering to vote in Barbuda, and these will be challenged.

The attorney accuses the Labour Party of trying illegal means to win the seat since the BPM is dominant among Barbudan electors. Therefore, Symister says the BPM has been advised of what steps it should take to deal with this issue.

FORMER Port of Spain mayor Louis Lee Sing explores the status quo when it comes to religion and the “wrongdoing of so many clerics” in his debut novel Closer to the Church.

He launched the book – his third – at the Little Carib Theatre, Woodbrook, on Wednesday afternoon.

The book is set in Port of Spain and follows two young people, Nathan John and Miriam who are “angry with their religions.”

The synopsis says, “(They) seek to attract many others to their cause and come up with the notion to stage and host a conference. In this cauldron of religious fervour, a spotlight is not only turned upon the abuses within the church but also the subject of religion as a whole.”

Lee Sing said it’s a story about “the world,” but it’s set in TT as, to him, this country is “the world.

“It’s a story about life in Trinidad, with its multiple platforms of religion and a variety of clergy. These religious units always influence the social, political and economic life of the republic.

“However, TT is also a sponge that absorbs whatever it sees.”

He said, very often there are reports regionally and internationally about abuse happening at places of worship. It was this that led him to write the book.

“Trinidad is not immune from that, and we hear all the talk all the time…Religion is perhaps, in my view, the most influential platform in TT. It impacts the issue of race, the issue of economics, the issue of schooling, and the list goes on and on and on.”

Former senate president Timothy Hamel-Smith praised his friend’s book. He said he became intrigued from as early as the prologue.

“What I believe is the backdrop to this book is abounding confidence.”

He said Lee Sing introduces readers to some “wonderful characters.”

There were three readings of the book – one by Sean Small, broadcast host of Talking Point on WESN, Lee Sing’s granddaughter Ysabel Lee Sing and Lee Sing himself.

The audience enjoyed the excerpts they heard, with many finding humour in some of the dialogue. Many also congratulated Lee Sing after the launch.

The $199 book is available on Amazon (e-book and physical book), Wordery online bookshop, eBay and at Paper Based Bookshop in Port of Spain.

THE Eastern Regional Health Authority (ERHA) is aiming to have its major facility – the Sangre Grande Hospital – receive international accreditation when its expansion is completed in 2023.

At the ERHA’s public board meeting on Thursday, Amy Ali, commissioning manager for the $850 million facility said the new wing will upgrade the hospital to a teaching hospital.

The meeting was held at the Sangre Grande Civic Centre, Sukhram Street, Foster Road, Sangre Grande.

The new wing will increase the bed space from 144 beds to 250 and will see an improvement of current services as well as introduction of new ones. She said the facility will be partnering with tertiary-level institutions to offer training at both graduate and postgraduate levels, which will enhance its medical research capabilities.

“We will align our campus to international hospital accreditation standards, taking us to a higher level, giving us the true benefits from this project. The new wing is designed in accordance with international healthcare design guidelines and will be outfitted with all the furniture and fixings to promote the services that are going to be offered.”

Ali said, as a holistic approach the old facility will be upgraded to resemble that of the new wing, which will be completed and handed over by the end of next year.

During the question-and-answer segment of the meeting, ERHA’s chief executive officer Ronald Tsoi-a-Fatt said financing for the upgrade of the old wing to meet the new will come from the ERHA’s public service investment programme (PSIP). This upgrade will be done on a phased basis, he added.

The new wing will see the internal medicine and emergency services transferred to it. There will be three additional operating theatres for general surgery, urology, orthopedics and the re-introduction of the ear, nose and throat facilities.

The new wing will allow for an expansion of the outpatient clinics, she said with a focus on internal medicine, cardiology, neurology, gastroenterology along with the other aforementioned medical needs.

The expansion will create 1,100 new jobs which will be filled as approvals are granted by the Finance Ministry.

“We are taking a hard look at quality and working at strengthening our systems as we focus on strengthening our systems to establish international accreditation standards. This is the commitment that we want to give our community so that you will trust that when you come to us you will be well taken care of.”

Yolande Benjamin, general manager of finance for the ERHA, said in the 2021/2022 fiscal year the regional authority received $439,866,932 for recurring expenses and capital expenditure of $29,419,607.

She said supplemental funding was received during the mid-year review totalling $39,300,100. In the end the ERHA received $519,167,032, which was still short of its overall expenses of $563,381,455.

She said, for the period the medical expenses decreased to $7,543,550 as well as hospital refurbishment which dropped to $7,703,800. Physical investment increased to $6,661,568. These were all PSIP allocations, Benjamin said, adding that there are no rollover projects from fiscal 2021/2022, which she highlighted was a great achievement.

“We have completed our unaudited financials as at the end of 2020/2021, and it was submitted to the Auditor General just waiting to be audited.” Benjamin said the subsequent fiscal year is in the process of being completed.

Sweet 16.

That is the number of days remaining until the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

After their world dominance between 2008 and 2013, Spain has endured a tough period which resulted in FIFA World Cup group stage elimination in 2014 and round of 16 exit in 2018.

Spain was voted FIFA’s Team of the Year from 2008, consecutively till 2013, a feat only matched by Brzil.

This accolade was earned thanks to European Championship titles in 2008 and 2012, along with their World Cup triumph in 2010.

The retirement of key players and the aspirations of other nations, saw Spain’s decline, at least by their standards.

Spain is ranked seventh in the FIFA standings despite their dive in rewards and are capable of returning to the previous heights which made them a dominant force in world football.

Country: Spain

Capital: Madrid

Population: 47.3 million

Confederation: UEFA (Europe)

Group: E

Professional League: La Liga

World Cup appearances: 16 (2022)

Qualification status: Winners of Group B

Key players: Sergio Busquets (Barcelona, Spain), Pedri (Barcelona, Spain), Alvaro Morata (Atletico Madrid, Spain), Pau Torres (Villareal, Spain), Unai Simon (Athletic Bilbao, Spain)

Coach: Luis Enrique (Spanish)

Group mates: Costa Rica, Germany, Japan

Predictions: This is a tricky group to predict, with two former world champions, along with two emerging nations.

Spain has the experience and unmasked talent to go beyond the group stage.

If successful in the preliminary round, I believe they can reach the quarterfinal round.

Group winners or runners-up is a realistic prediction for the Spanish.
