Atomica looks hard to beat in rich Jamaica Cup Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Jamaica News Loop News

Jamaica Derby winner, ATOMICA, is the lone speed in Saturday’s Jamaica Cup at nine and a half furlongs, carrying 115lb, against older horses, who are either slower, much heavier, out-of-form or simply do not belong in the grade-one event at Caymanas Park.

St Leger winner BLUE VINYL is the other three-year-old in the $6 million race, sitting level at 115lb with ATOMICA, who had beaten him by eight and a half lengths in August’s Jamaica Derby at 12 furlongs.

ATOMICA’s stablemate, CALCULUS, is the distance-specialist in the line-up but has not trained for the Jamaica Cup and reportedly struggled after his last workout.

United States-bred I AM FRED has the best form to recommend of leading trainer Jason DaCosta’s four entries, placing second to CALCULUS at 10 furlongs on September 24 and third behind MAHOGANY in last month’s Gold Cup.

DaCosta’s 2020 Jamaica Derby winner, KING ARTHUR, impressed at exercise last Saturday morning, clocking 1:26.4 for seven furlongs, but hasn’t raced since August 27.

Speedy ATOMICA’S Gold Cup run was fraught with incidents, her shying from horses at the start and five furlongs out when slamming into JORDAN REIGN’S against the rail. She lost all chance leaving the three-furlong pole by barging into SHE’S A WONDER and dropping back to last.

Despite her terrible trip, ATOMICA ran on in the stretch run to finish fifth with Dane Dawkins, two and a quarter lengths behind third-place I AM FRED, who was six and a half off the winner, MAHOGANY.

The Jamaica Cup is the ninth of 10 races scheduled. First post is 11:30 am.

Ivan Toney stuns Man City and sends message to England Loop Jamaica

Black Immigrant Daily News

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Ivan Toney issued the perfect response to being omitted from England’s World Cup squad by scoring both goals in Brentford’s shock 2-1 Premier League win at Manchester City on Saturday.

The striker was left out of Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for Qatar, with Newcastle’s Callum Wilson selected ahead of him.

But he showcased the quality his country will miss out on when putting the visitors ahead in the first half and then firing a 98th-minute winner.

The result means Arsenal are guaranteed to top the Premier League until the season resumes at Christmas – while Toney’s performance is sure to spark a debate over whether Southgate was right to leave him behind.

“There was disappointment, but I know what I’m capable of,” Toney told BT Sport after the game at the Etihad Stadium. “It won’t put me down. I will keep going.”

Defeat for City gives Arsenal a prime opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table to five points with a win at Wolves on Saturday evening.

Just a week after a late Erling Haaland penalty secured victory against Fulham, the reigning champion was on the receiving end of stoppage-time drama.

Toney put Brentford ahead after 16 minutes with a powerful close-range header after beating Aymeric Laporte in the air.

His winner saw him beat Ilkay Gundogan to turn home Josh Dasilva’s cross from the right.

He might have had a hat trick moments later but Kevin de Bruyne cleared off the line.

Phil Foden had fired City level in first-half stoppage time with a half-volley into the top corner – but Brentford and Toney saw a host of chances repelled, with Ederson repeatedly called into action as the forward stretched the home team’s defense.

On a day when Haaland cut a subdued figure, it was Toney who won the battle of the frontmen with the type of performance that may have Southgate thinking twice about his decision.

“Fantastic,” said Brentford manager Thomas Frank.. “I can’t praise him enough. What I would say, most importantly, is how good a person he is. How emotionally intelligent he is about his teammates.

“But what a player. What a striker. He scored two and should probably have scored one more. Imagine a hat trick here. I thought that was just for Haaland.”

Antigua PM says oil companies should pay for climate damage

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Antigua News Room

Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne wants oil and gas giants to pay for damage from climate change through a global carbon tax on their profits.

Speaking on behalf of the 39-nation Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) at the United Nations Climate Conference (COP27) on Tuesday, he charged “profligate producers of fossil fuels have benefited from extortionate profits at the expense of human civilization”.

“While they are profiting, the planet is burning,” he added.

Browne contended that while these companies rack up multibillion-dollar profits from using fossil fuels which is a major contributor to global warming, small island nations like his and others in the Caribbean that have contributed virtually nothing to total emissions are suffering.

He pointed out that in the first half of this year, six fossil fuel companies alone had made nearly €70 billion (US$71 billion) in profits which was “more than enough money to cover the costs of major climate damage in developing nations”.

Browne also called for an end to fossil fuel subsidies – and for the money to be redirected to fund adaptation, mitigation, and loss and damage, especially in small island developing states (SIDS) – and collective action to reduce emissions.

“Financing to address loss and damage and a recommitment to keeping 1.5 alive in the face of the current energy crisis, are the key critical success factors of COP27.

“Loss and damage should not be seen through the divisive and controversial lens, but as a form of climate justice for climate change’s hapless victims and a decarbonization accelerator,” the Antiguan leader said.

Gaston Browne also said a group of island nations had registered a commission with the UN to explore the responsibility of states for injuries arising from their climate actions and breaches in the obligations.

He said small island states would not back down.

“We will fight unrelentingly for climate justice, including in the international courts,” Browne warned.

On the same day he delivered his remarks, the hosts of the COP27 climate talks on Tuesday launched a 30-point global plan to help the world’s poorest communities withstand the impacts of global warming, including targets for sustainable farming, and mangrove restoration to reduce coastal flooding.

The plan seeks to disburse up to US$300 billion annually from private and public investors.

Cruise Ship With 800 COVID Cases Docks In Sydney – St. Lucia Times News

Black Immigrant Daily News

A holiday cruise ship carrying about 800 passengers with Covid-19 has docked in Sydney, Australia.

The Majestic Princess cruise ship arrived at Circular Quay, having sailed from New Zealand.

About 4,600 passengers and crew were aboard the ship when it docked – meaning around one in five had Covid.

The outbreak is reminiscent of the Ruby Princess cruise ship Covid outbreak of early 2020, where at least 900 people tested positive and 28 died.

Marguerite Fitzgerald, the president of cruise operator Carnival Australia, said a large number of cases started to be detected about halfway through the 12-day voyage.

All cases were either asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, she said.

Staff would be assisting all guests who have tested positive “with accessing private transport and accommodation to complete their isolation period”, she said. The ship will soon depart for Melbourne.

Asked about comparisons between the Majestic Princess and the Ruby Princess – which also belongs to the same operator – Ms Fitzgerald said: “Since then, we as a community have learnt a lot, a lot more about Covid.”

The outbreak comes as Covid cases rise across Australia.

In New South Wales, 19,800 new cases were detected in the seven days to Friday.

Woodland still under water, clean-up operations hampered

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Trinidad and Tobago Newsday

News

Several parts of Woodland were still under floodwaters on Friday, and affected residents were hoping there would be no more rain, the like of which were seen earlier in the week.

They estimated it could take about three to four days for the water to subside.

On Thursday, the Meteorological Office downgraded its riverine alert from orange to yellow, and its yellow-level adverse-weather alert was downgraded to green. On Friday, the riverine alert was discontinued.

Angel Khan, of Pluck Road, said the family’s home had been flooded since Wednesday evening after the South Oropouche River burst its banks, cutting off scores of families.

“This is the worst flood we have had for the year. The water did not reach inside the house during the past few floods. We did not expect the water to reach inside. If we pump the water out of the house, where would we throw it? We have to wait for the water to go down,” Khan said.

She recalled that the flood was worse in 2018, so much so that they had to evacuate.

On Thursday councillor Doodnath Mayhroo of the Siparia Regional Corporation, and MP Davendranath Tancoo, handed out food. Good Samaritans also distributed food on Thursday and Friday.

Khan said flooding has become normal. In the past, she and relatives used to be ashamed to collect free meals from people. Now, that too has become normal.

She added that her pet dog, Timmy, went missing on Thursday.

Khan said, “He was here yesterday, running through floodwaters. Today I do not know where he is.”

Another affected resident Subrina Bansgopaul said scores of lilies in the nearby lagoon make it harder for the water to run off.

Some people risked their lives by walking through the floodwaters to get in and out of the communities to got food and other supplies for their families.

Bansgopual said, in 2017, 2018 and 2019, floodwaters had risen higher than in the past few days.

Although the water was going down, it was still high.

Newsday caught up with residents who caught fish in the river. Shawn Phillip and other villagers caught several granticai fish after two hours.

Newsday could not get further into the village owing to the high volume of water still present.

On Friday afternoon, Tancoo issued a media statement saying he was denied the opportunity to raise, in the Parliament, the issue of flooding as a matter of urgent public importance.

He shared the letter he wrote to the Speaker on the issue, urging the Government to take immediate action to provide relief and assistance to affected communities.

“The matter is urgent as tens of thousands of citizens have been placed in life-threatening situations as their homes, vehicles, food supplies and access to proper drinking water have all been submerged by floods,” part of the letter said.

“The matter is urgent as thousands of medically vulnerable citizens have been severely compromised and placed in grave danger by these floods as their medication and medical-care equipment have all been submerged, while access to emergency care has been virtually cut off.”

The Opposition MP said the prevention of the debate on flooding was extremely unfortunate, especially after last week’s refusal to debate the crime situation. However, the Opposition MPs have the option of raising those issues as matters on the adjournment of the House.

“Even if we are prevented from raising and debating these matters in the Parliament, the Opposition will not be prevented from publicly challenging and demanding accountability from the Government.”

The flood devastated several past of the country over the past few days.

At Penal, the water had subsided, and residents were cleaning up on Friday.

In the aftermath of the flooding, at least two auto dealerships said there had been an increased demand for their services.

A worker at Xplicit Car Care in Penal said, “A lot of people would have reached out due to the flooding situation. I even had to do home visits to do repairs and cleaning.”

Anderson Ramsaran of Anderson Auto Detailing in Penal added, “A lot of people came due to water getting inside of their vehicles because of driving through the floods.

“I had to scrap down the inside of vehicles and thoroughly clean them so people can get them back as soon as possible.”

The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government has been urging the public to contact the disaster management units of the municipal corporations if they were affected by the bad weather.

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Martinique FranceAntilles

redaction web
