L’Américaine Elizabeth Holmes, un temps couronnée plus jeune “self-made woman” milliardaire du monde, grâce aux promesses de sa start-up de tests sanguins Theranos, a connu une chute aussi sensationnelle que son ascension, qui a exposé les limites de la culture de la Silicon Valley.
Vendredi, la jeune femme, enceinte, a été condamnée à un peu plus de 11 ans de prison après avoir été reconnue coupable en janvier de fraude par un tribunal de San José en Californie.
Au terme d’un procès de quatre mois, les jurés avaient déterminé qu’elle avait “menti et triché” pour lever des fonds, selon les mots d’un procureur.
Elizabeth Anne Holmes, 38 ans, a longtemps été décrite comme une visionnaire et un nouveau Steve Jobs, une comparaison encouragée par le col roulé noir que cette blonde aux grands yeux bleus portait presque invariablement, comme le défunt fondateur d’Apple.
Fille d’une assistante parlementaire et d’un ancien directeur chez Enron – un groupe qui a sombré dans un immense scandale de fraude – elle n’a que 19 ans quand elle fonde Theranos, en 2003.
Comme Steve Jobs, elle avait été admise à la prestigieuse université de Stanford, et comme lui, elle abandonne rapidement ses études. Elle choisit d’utiliser l’argent mis de côté par ses parents pour financer le démarrage de sa start-up, basée à Palo Alto, au coeur de la Silicon Valley.
Elle met alors en avant des motivations personnelles: la mort subite d’un oncle chez lequel aucune maladie n’avait auparavant été diagnostiquée.
“Pour moi, rien n’a plus d’importance que ce que les gens traversent quand quelqu’un qu’ils aiment devient vraiment très malade”, affirmait-elle dans une vidéo sur le site de Theranos. “Le sentiment d’être impuissant est déchirant et si je peux construire quelque chose pour changer cela, c’est ce que je veux faire de ma vie”.
Son entreprise promettait des diagnostics plus rapides et moins chers que ceux des laboratoires traditionnels, grâce à des méthodes présentées comme révolutionnaires, permettant des tests multiples avec une toute petite quantité de sang.
Les investisseurs sont séduits. En 2014, Forbes évalue la fortune de Mme Holmes à 4,5 milliards de dollars et la décrit comme la plus jeune femme milliardaire n’ayant pas hérité de sa fortune.
Elle était “intelligente, éloquente, déterminée”, avait raconté pendant le procès Jim Mattis, un ancien ministre américain de la Défense, qui a fait partie du conseil d’administration de Theranos, comme l’ex-secrétaire d’Etat Henry Kissinger.
Elizabeth Holmes met personnellement les logos de géants pharmaceutiques comme Pfizer sur des documents officiels de Theranos vantant ses produits, sans la permission des entreprises concernées. Et garde le secret sur les divers échecs de ses machines.
Mais en 2015, le Wall Street Journal publie une enquête accablante, malgré les tentatives de la dirigeante d’empêcher sa parution en faisant appel à Rupert Murdoch, le propriétaire du quotidien américain et aussi un investisseur de Theranos.
Les articles révèlent le manque de fiabilité des technologies de la start-up, qui ne servent que pour une petite partie des plus de 200 tests proposés.
Theranos multiplie alors les démentis. “C’est ce qui arrive quand vous travaillez pour changer les choses. D’abord on pense que vous êtes fou et on vous combat, et soudain vous changez le monde”, assène Elizabeth Holmes sur CNBC.
Pendant son procès, elle a continué à tenter de convaincre le jury de sa bonne foi. Elle a aussi évoqué sa relation avec Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, son ex-directeur des opérations et compagnon.
Elle a notamment expliqué qu’il la contrôlait de près, au travail et à la maison, cherchant à la “façonner” en une nouvelle personne, plus masculine et moins “petite fille”.
Aujourd’hui mariée et maman d’un petit garçon de 18 mois et enceinte d’un deuxième enfant, son histoire a fasciné les médias américains, car elle incarnait une certaine image de la Silicon Valley innovante, avant sa déchéance.

Les pompiers ont été très sollicités en début d’après-midi de vendredi. • DR
Un homme muni d’une barre de fer s’en est pris à trois personnes ce vendredi 18 novembre, vers 13h40.
L’agresseur était muni d’une barre de fer. Ce vendredi, vers 13h40 à proximité de la mairie de Fort-de-France, pour une raison inconnue, il s’en est pris à trois hommes âgés de 38, 50 et 60 ans.
Blessés aux bras et aux épaules, ils ont dû être pris en charge par les pompiers et transférés au CHU de Martinique.
Témoin des faits, une femme de 67 ans a, elle aussi, dû être secourue par les hommes du Service Territorial d’Incendie et de Secours de Martinique et transportée à l’hôpital. Deux ambulances des pompiers étaient mobilisées sur les lieux.
L’auteur de l’agression a été maîtrisé par les policiers et interpellé.
Environ une heure plus tard, les pompiers étaient cette fois-ci appelés par la gendarmerie, à Rivière-Pilote. Ils ont pris en charge une femme de 28 ans, quartier Canari Casse, qui aurait reçu des coups de son ex-compagnon. Elle souffrirait de multiples contusions et a été conduite au CHUM.

Deputy Governor Franz Manderson, confirmed Thursday that he was diagnosed with having a micro heart attack for which he had to undergo an emergency medical procedure.
Regarding his operation, the Deputy Governor said: “I am happy to report that my procedure was successful. I am recovering well, thanks to the dedicated and professional team of medical professionals at the Health Services Authority and Doctors Hospital. I thank them both for their swift action and continued support.”
“I also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the public for the outpouring of support and well-wishes,” he continued.
The deputy governor also took the time to encourage the community to consider the importance of their health.
He said:
It would be remiss of me not to encourage everyone, and especially the men of our community, to take their health seriously.
It’s ok to ask for help when you need it.
Doing so may have saved my life.
Best wishes and a speedy recovery for the Deputy Governor.

Trinidad and Tobago Red Force coach David Furlonge is urging his bowlers to stick to the plan in the CG United Super50 Cup final as the Red Force clash with Jamaica Scorpions in what is expected to be a batting-friendly wicket at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua on Saturday. The match bowls off at 2 pm.
Furlonge, describing the mood in the camp, said, “The fellas are in good spirits. We just had a nice practice session.”
He said a meeting was planned for Friday night and one item on the agenda was discussing ways to contain the Scorpions batsmen.
“Later on today (Friday) we will go through the Jamaica batting line-up. We are just waiting on some information from the analyst…and see how best we could plan and prepare for their batters. The semi-final wickets over here have been very batsman-friendly, so bowlers just have to be consistent, stick with the plan that we go out with.”
Red Force fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has been making life difficult for batsmen, grabbing 4/43 in ten overs in the semi-finals.
Scorpions skipper Rovman Powell has been in scintillating form, scoring a century in the semi-finals.
Powell’s hundred led Scorpions into the final with a three-wicket win over Guyana Harpy Eagles in semi-final two at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Thursday.
Powell struck 105 not out off 92 deliveries as Scorpions got to 322/7 in 48.1 overs after Harpy Eagles scored 318/7 in 50 overs. Powell’s innings included seven fours and three sixes.
Furlonge is satisfied with the effort of the Red Force batsmen during the tournament.
“The batting has been good, and as I said, the wicket here is batsmen-friendly, so we hope that the batsmen can be consistent and maintain their form.”
On Wednesday, in semi-final one, Pooran slammed five fours and eight sixes in his innings of 111 off 82 balls to guide Red Force to a competitive 312/6 in 50 overs against Barbados Pride at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. Opener Amir Jangoo found form, hitting 81 off 114 balls, and the experienced Darren Bravo struck 54 off 65 deliveries.
Pride responded with 302/8 as Red Force escaped with a ten-run win.
Pooran’s century came just days after he cracked an unbeaten 99 off 71 balls in the group phase of the tournament against Windward Islands Volcanoes at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba.

MAGNOLIA and Paragon were crowned women’s and men’s knock-out champions, respectively, when the TT Hockey Board National Indoor League 2022 continued at the Woodbrook Youth Facility in Port of Spain, last weekend.
Magnolia defeated Paragon 6-2 to win the women’s title.
Shaniah De Freitas opened the scoring for Magnolia in the first minute, before teammates Samantha Olton and Brianna Govia found the back of the net to give Magnolia a comfortable 3-0 lead.
Gabrielle Thompson pulled a goal back for Paragon to make it 3-1, but De Freitas and Savannah De Freitas scored as Magnolia went 5-1 up.
Keima Gardiner converted for Paragon, but Olton added another to complete the scoring.
The men’s knock-out final was more keenly contested as Paragon edged Defence Force 5-4.
Paragon’s Tarrell Singh led the scoring with two goals, and was supported by Joel Daniel, Kiel Murray and David Coker who added one apiece. Scoring for Defence Force were Dylan Francis, Che Modeste, Tariq Singh and Mickel Pierre.

Burna Boy
LESS than 24 hours after international Grammy award-winning Afrobeats singer Burna Boy confirmed he will be in Trinidad on December 16, online VIP and General tickets were sold out.
Trinidad was added to Burna Boy’s stadium concert World Damini Tour website a week ago.
On Thursday Burna Boy posted a picture on Instagram with the words: “Trinidad 16/12.”
He captioned it “Finally!” The post has received over 61,000 likes and almost 2,000 comments.
A week earlier, an Instagram post by Barbados-based organisers Twisted Entertainment said he would be performing in Trinidad, Antigua and Jamaica on December 16, 17 and 18 respectively.
Twisted Entertainment is an entertainment and promotions company formed by young entrepreneurs from different Caribbean countries with experience in promoting, staging and planning events.
This is Burna Boy’s second visit to the country, after he was featured at the closing night of the Tobago Music Art and Cultural Festival on October 27. Despite heavy thundershowers, he delivered a riveting performance at the Plymouth Recreational Grounds just after 1 am.
Two days later he thanked Tobago for hosting him in another Instagram post: “In the middle of a thunderstorm, Tobago, you all were unbelievable.”
He first visited Barbados in July and then St Maarten, Tobago, Dominica and Curacao.
Over the past four months, Burna Boy hasperformed before thousands throughout the Caribbean.

Road works ongoing by the Division of Infrastructure at the King Peter’s Bay Hill road in Moriah. –
Residents of King Peter’s Bay Hill in Moriah are happy for their new road.
On Wednesday, a press release from the THA Division of Quarries, Infrastructure and Urban Development said the dreams of the residents are well under way, saying, “What was 200 steep steps is now a concrete roadway which extends 400 metres throughout this remote and tranquil community.”
This upgrade, the release said, includes drainage, retaining structures and a turntable at the end of the road. It added that “by mid-December, residents will finally be able to drive their cars into their yards and have access to emergency services, some things they have been deprived of for ages.”
Over the years, residents have clamoured for the rehabilitation of the dilapidated road, as families wishing to access their properties had to walk a long flight of stairs.
One resident, Theophilus Wallace, said he is grateful.
“I didn’t believe we would have got road up here. I didn’t believe at all we would have get road to see car coming up.
“If you sick now, you could call the ambulance, they could come right there and take me up. Some say road cannot come up here. I glad for it and everybody up here glad for it, everybody.”
Hayden Kerr, a resident for over 50 years, said he knows the terrains from “track, to steps, to road.
“The steps were a serious challenge for some of the residents who living up here for most of their lives, because it not easy to walk on steps. We have material to take up the hill, you have foodstuff, you have grocery, you have load to go up this hill – it wasn’t easy.
“I welcome the road. I really, really happy that now we have road.”
Previously, area representative Ian Pollard told Newsday there are 192 steps leading to people’s homes. He said there are about 50 people living in that area and this has been their only option for decades. He had been hoping the steps could be replaced by a road to allow vehicles access.
