Sept. 10, 2026: Guyana opposition leader Azruddin Mohamed and his father, businessman Nazar Mohamed, return to the court today as their extradition proceedings resume, after the case was adjourned earlier this week due to a scheduling clash with a separate High Court matter.
The extradition hearing was adjourned to accommodate the Mohameds’ required testimony in a High Court contempt case involving social media personality Mikhail Rodrigues, known as the “Guyanese Critic.” The court was told the Mohameds were scheduled to appear before Justice Niles from 10 a.m. Tuesday for the contempt proceedings, which the outlet reported stem from an earlier defamation case in which a final order and injunction had been entered against Rodrigues restraining further defamatory statements. The Mohameds subsequently initiated contempt proceedings alleging that order was breached, and testimony in that matter had already begun, with the Mohameds expected before the High Court for the full day Tuesday, according to Guyana Chronicle.
The scheduling conflict prompted the extradition proceedings, which had been expected to continue this week, to be pushed to today, Thursday, September 10, running from 9 a.m. and expected to continue until midday. Meanwhile, the magistrate is weighing submissions on issues raised during the extradition hearing so far, with the prosecution having submitted its arguments and the defense granted until 4 p.m. Tuesday to respond in writing; a ruling is expected once the submissions and accompanying legal authorities are reviewed.
Today’s resumption follows a dramatic session this week in which Prem Narine, head of the Guyana Police Force’s Special Branch intelligence unit, testified under cross-examination that he could not recall who instructed him to get involved in the extradition process against the Mohameds or to arrest them on October 31, 2025, according to Demerara Waves. Narine admitted his department is not responsible for investigating or prosecuting crimes and said he collected the extradition warrants from the Attorney General’s chambers without knowing who prepared them.
