La rentr?e des classes est maintenue au 3 octobre prochain. Officiellement. Le ministre de l’Education nationale et de la Formation professionnelle s’attend toutefois ? une rentr?e graduelle au cours du mois d’octobre, face au climat de tension que vivent la capitale et les principales villes de province depuis l’annonce par le Premier ministre Ariel Henry d’augmenter le prix de l’essence. A Port-au-Prince et dans d’autres r?gions du pays, les populations payaient d?j? un lourd tribut avec le climat d’ins?curit?, notamment le kidnapping. Alors que la rentr?e des classes s’annon?ait compliqu?e, la d?cision du gouvernement de revoir ? la hausse les prix des carburants a jet? de l’huile sur le feu.

Les actes de violence, de pillage et d’incendie d’?tablissements scolaires dans l’Artibonite (Gonaives, Dessalines, Grande-Saline…), dans le Nord-Est ou dans la Grand’Anse compliquent davantage une rentr?e scolaire marathon. Une trentaine d’?coles a ?t? victime d’actes de vandalisme ces derniers jours. Que ce soit au niveau des infrastructures, de mobilier, de mat?riel didactique, d’infrastructures num?riques (informatiques), de cantine scolaire, mais surtout des archives. Dans un communiqu? dat? du 17 septembre, le minist?re a condamn? les attaques contre les ?coles et appel? ? la protection des infrastructures et archives scolaires. <>, a indiqu? le minist?re.

Selon le ministre, la majorit? des ?coles priv?es victimes de ces actes de vandalisme sont de congr?gation catholique romaine ou anglicane. <<Toutes les ?coles attaqu?es ?taient dot?es de cantines scolaires ou de caf?t?ria, souligne Nesmy Manigat, qui annonce une contribution de l’Etat afin de faciliter la rentr?e des classes dans ces ?coles d?s octobre prochain.

Jason DaCosta saddled a two-timer on Tuesday’s nine-race card at Caymanas Park to earn himself well-needed space from three-time defending champion trainer, Anthony Nunes, who has made inroads into his lead atop the stakes standings.

Nunes, who saddled eight winners for the last three meets to whittle DaCosta’s lead to $3.3m entering Tuesday’s meet, came up empty-handed while his rival opened and closed the programme with favourites THEGOODLIFE and SILENT MISSION, respectively.

THEGOODLIFE made all in the opening event at odds of 8-5 with Christopher Mamdeen, fighting off STICKYDON down the backstretch before staying on to hold HIJO PRIMERO at bay by a half-length at six furlongs.

SILENT MISSION benefitted from a well-timed ride under six-time champion jockey Omar Walker to land the ninth race at odds of 4-5 by a neck from ALEXA’S SECRET.

Walker had the Portmore and 1000 Guineas third-place runner tracking a tight group of leaders down the backstretch before making his move off the home turn.

Challenging THIRTYONEKISSES and A GIFT FROM BEN from along the rail, SILENT MISSION pulled off from the battling pair but had to be pushed out to stave off a charging ALEXA’S SECRET, winning the six-furlong event in 1:14.0.

Racing continues at Caymanas Park on Saturday.

The Rockfort police are seeking the public’s assistance to find the relatives of an elderly man who was found wandering along Sir Florizel Glasspole Boulevard, Kingston 17, on Tuesday, September 20.

The man gave his name as Bunny Brown and told the police he was from Coleyville, Manchester.

The police have, however, been unable to locate his family, and he wasn’t able to provide any additional information.

Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Brown’s family or who can assist the police in any way is asked to call the Rockfort police at 876-922-2941, police 119 emergency number, or the nearest police station.

A tropical wave located several hundred miles east of the Windward Islands has become better organised this morning.

The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) says satellite data indicate additional development is expected, and a tropical depression is likely to form within the next few days as the system moves westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 miles per hour across the eastern and central Caribbean Sea.

The NHC says interests in the Windward Islands should closely monitor the progress of this system as heavy rainfall and gusty winds could affect these islands beginning on Wednesday.

The tropical disturbance has a 40 per cent (medium) chance of formation in 48 hours and a 70 per cent (high) chance of formation in five days.

Robert Miller wants Portmore toll renegotiated Loop Jamaica

Member of Parliament for St Catherine South Eastern, Robert Miller says he has written to Minister of Transport and Mining, Audley Shaw with recommendations regarding the annual increase in toll rates that residents of Portmore have to pay.

Based on the agreement with TransJamaican Highway Limited East-West, a rate increase is granted each year that is in line with inflation.

The most recent increase took effect on July 2 and saw rates going up between 9.09 per cent and 26.67 per cent.

Miller, who was making his contribution to the 2022/23 State of the Constituency Debate in the House of Representatives, said one of his recommendations is that the contract with the toll operator be renegotiated.

Noting that the contract was signed by a previous People’s National Party Government, Miller said: “We, on this (the Jamaica Labour Party) side, believe the contract is inconsiderate and erroneous to the people of the constituency, and citizens of Portmore in particular.”

“I have been in dialogue with the minister and we hope that this vexed issue will be resolved sooner rather than later. We use this opportunity to encourage the toll operators to sit around the table as we come up with solutions in which everyone benefits,” Miller added.

But, while he is hoping for an outcome that will be of benefit to his constituents, Miller acknowledged that the government’s hands are tied “in regards to the yearly increase of the toll cost”.

Portmore residents have for more than a decade complained of the unfairness of paying a toll on a relatively short stretch of road that sees them stuck in traffic for extended periods in the mornings and evenings during peak hours. The alternative route along the Mandela Highway is equally congested during peak hours.

For its part, the operators of Highway 2000, which links Kingston to the South Coast and encompasses the Portmore leg of the toll, raked in US$52.7 million (J$8 billion) in tolls in 2021.

The figure was 16 per cent higher than in 2020, according to the audited report by TranJamaican Highway.

Four days after their match against Papine High was overshadowed by violent clashes on the field, Camperdown High suffered an away 9-2 defeat against Mona High on matchday seven of the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup competition on Tuesday.

The victory carries Mona High to a maximum of nine points from three games and firmly on top of Group E.

Wolmer’s Boys’ School jumped into second spot, also on nine points, following a 2-0 win over Papine High. Hydel High whipped Kingston High 7-1 to be in the third spot on six points.

Over in Group F, Excelsior High surged to the top of the group with seven points from three games following a 2-1 victory against Clan Carthy High.

Campion College’s good start to the season continued with a 2-1 victory against Cumberland High, a result that pushea them into the second spot with five points.

Kingston Technical slipped to third spot on four points after they crashed to a 1-0 defeat against Jose Marti High.

There is a surprise leader in Group C as Haile Selassie stunned Tivoli Gardens High 3-1 and jumped to the top with seven points. Charlie Smith defeated Edith Dalton James 3-1 and moved into the second spot also with seven points while Bridgeport High are third on four points following a 2-2 draw against Vauxhall High, which gained their first point of the season.

In the lone Group B game, St Catherine High edged St Jago High 1-0 to assume sole leadership with seven points from three games.

Quando Rondo has denied that he proposed to his 18-year-old girlfriend over the weekend in a sweet proposal that went viral.

The rapper has not responded to the backlash. Perhaps it was that backlash from fans that prompted him to issue a statement denying that he is engaged.

New Orleans will be the site of the 71st Miss Universe contest, bringing together nearly 90 women contestants from around the world in January, the Miss Universe Organization said.

“The City of New Orleans and the Miss Universe Organization share common values of celebrating inclusion, culture and the empowerment of women,” New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said Monday.

She noted in a news release that former contestants and winners have gone on to become surgeons, diplomats, politicians, and business leaders, adding “they all champion social causes that are important to them”.

The competition will be aired on January 14, 2023 — a Saturday — at the city’s convention centre, according to the statement. The live broadcast will culminate with the 70th Miss Universe — Bollywood actress Harnaaz Sandhu of India — crowning the winner.

“There is no place like New Orleans. This vibrant city has been at the top of our list to host for quite some time due to its rich cultural history, as well as its unique arts, entertainment, and culinary scene,” said Paula Shugart, president of The Miss Universe Organization.

Last year’s pageant in Eilat, Israel, was held in the middle of the night to accommodate the U S primetime TV schedule.
