Nigeria’s anti-drug agency seized a record 1.8 tons of cocaine valued at US$278 million at a Lagos warehouse in what it described Monday as likely the country’s largest bust ever.

Five people – the warehouse manager and four “drug barons” including one profiled as a Jamaican – were arrested in connection with the drugs, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency said.

It said the suspects were members of an international drug syndicate the agency has been trailing since 2018.

The agency said the drugs were found in a secluded estate in the Ikorodu area of Lagos on Sunday at a time when “the cartel was trying to sell them to buyers in Europe, Asia and other parts of the world”.

The drugs were stored in 10 travel bags and 13 drums, the agency said in a statement published along with photos of the suspects and the drugs.

The agency said the arrests and seizure were “a historical blow to the drug cartels and a strong warning that they’ll all go down if they fail to realise that the game has changed.”

Drug seizures have been rising in West Africa in the last year, indicating that traffickers have made the continent a hub to move their illegal products between South America and Europe.

Police and crime scene investigators process the crime scene of a murder and attempted robbery at Pennywise Plaza, La Romain on Monday night. – Marvin Hamilton

POLICE are investigating a shooting and robbery at Pennywise Plaza, La Romain on Monday evening.

Reports say around 5 pm, three private security officers, two men and one woman, were shot by bandits while driving out of the Pennywise compound during an attempted hold-up. The men escaped in a waiting vehicle.

Police were called in and were able to intercept the getaway car a short time later and there was a shootout.

After a chase during which the men abandoned the getaway car and stole another vehicle, police eventually cornered them in an abandoned house.

When the smoke cleared after another exchange of gunfire, police said four bandits were found dead and three AR-15 rifles were recovered.

Newsday could not confirm whether any police officers were injured in the shootout.

The police said the security officers were transporting money in an unmarked white van. As the van left the car park and turned onto La Bel Air Road, a white car pulled in front of the van, blocking it.

Five men got out and began shooting at the van. The gunmen opened the van’s back doors and took a bag with an undisclosed sum of cash before returning to the car, which sped off.

All three security officers were hit and the two men (identified as Jeffrey Peters and Jerry Baptiste) died, while the woman was fighting for his life at the San Fernando General Hospital up to Monday night. They were said to be employed with Allied Security Services Ltd.

In a public statement on its social media pages on Monday night, Pennywise Cosmetics Ltd expressed sadness over the incident.

“The board of directors, management and staff would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the families of the victims.

“Due to these circumstances, our La Romain Plaza branch will remain closed tomorrow (Tuesday) as a sign of respect and so that our staff may get some time to focus on their mental health.”

Police are continuing investigations.(With reporting by Laurel Williams)

President Dr Irfaan Ali and Ambassador Caroline Rodrigues-Birkett

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali will be representing Guyana on a number of fronts when the 77th United Nations General Assembly high-level week commences on Tuesday.

Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, said the head of state will participate in engagements with the Council of the Americas, CAF – Development Bank of Latin America − where he will be speaking on food security, international forum on African Caribbean Leadership and the International Economic Alliance.

“There are a number of events that His Excellency will be engaged in from Monday to Wednesday. He leaves here on Wednesday. He will be involved in approximately 17 events,” she stated.

The high-level week sees leaders from various countries promoting foreign policy. Guyana has appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd to engage in over 25 meetings promoting Guyana’s foreign policy.

“So, we are hoping to maximise this year’s high-level week. It will be the first time since COVID we will have had this number of leaders at the UN and while there are many criticisms of the UN, it is the heart of multilateralism and this is the time when many countries use the opportunity not only to make its national statement in the general debate which His Excellency President Ali will do, but it is also a time for bilateral and for sharing ideas and experiences in the various meetings that will be held,” Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett explained.

President Ali is also slated to attend an event to be hosted by US President, Joe Biden. He will also hold discussions with the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, among other officials. Last week, the Guyanese leader left for the United Stated where he attended a meeting between Caribbean leaders and the US Vice President, Kamala Harris. He has since participated in several other engagements.
