FORMER chief executive officer of the National Self-Help Commission (NSHC), Elroy Julien, narrowly escaped being called on to answer a contempt of court charge on Wednesday.

Julien, the witness for the commission in a lawsuit brought by a former employee who is challenging her dismissal, had to briefly appear virtually from a dentist’s office to explain why he could not give evidence at the trial.

In obvious discomfort, he was excused from testifying for the day.

His dentist, Dr Don Carrington, said Julien’s discomfort was likely to last another day, resulting in Justice Frank Seepersad adjourning the trial to Monday instead.

Testifying earlier from a courtroom was Tricia Brown, the commission’s former administrative officer who was dismissed on April 11, 2019. She is seeking compensation through the lawsuit.

In her evidence, Brown outlined her tenure with the commission and the events which led to her eventual dismissal. She also faced disciplinary charges which she previously challenged in court.

She claims being victimised and accused the commission of failing to restrain her superiors from harassing her and intentionally inflicting mental stress and suffering.

Also testifying as Brown’s witness was a social worker who counselled her for almost a year after the firing.

In her lawsuit, Brown said she was forced to rely on Government grants to support herself and her family. She is asking for approximately $176,808 in special damages.

Brown is represented by attorney Farai Hove Masaisai while Frederick Gilkes is representing the commission.

Scotiabank realised about $521 million in profit after tax for the nine months of the financial year ending in July 31 according to its financial report.

In a media release sent on Wednesday, Scotiabank said the reported profits represented $59 million or 13 per cent increase from the same period for 2021.

The release said, for the third quarter, Scotiabank earned $164 million after tax, $7 million more than the same period for 2021. The release said the improvement was mainly due to continued increases in core banking activity as people return to normal operating conditions following the lifting of covid19 restrictions.

The report said total revenue which comprised of net interest and other income stood at $1.4 billion for the period. It represented an increase of $133 million or 10 per cent over the same period last year.

“We continue to make our products and services more accessible and convenient for all our customers,” said Scotiabank TT Managing Director Gayle Pazos.

He said the bank launched a number of new products that would make banking with Scotia all the more convenient, such as the Basic Access deposit account aimed at supporting small and micro entrepreneurs and self-employed customers.

“These additions to our product offerings will deliver enhanced features to our customers while broadening their deposit capabilities, insurance protection and retirement options,” Pazos said.

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh

ALTHOUGH he is back out to work, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh has said that he is still very weak after recently battling swine flu.

While speaking in the capacity of St Joseph MP at the opening of the Maitagual Community Centre in San Juan on Wednesday, Deyalsingh occasionally coughed and sniffled.

He was hospitalised at the Arima Hospital last week, and after the Health Ministry said it was not covid19, it was revealed he had swine flu.

He said, “I got influenza A (H3N2). My only regret in spending my time in a hospital bed is having led the health team to where we can have physical celebrations for our 60th anniversary of Independence, I was not able as the person who led the medical response to be part of those festivities.”

During his speech on Wednesday, he admitted, “The swine flu has left me very weak, eh.”

Earlier he joked, “Please don’t tell Dr Michelle Trotman (Thoracic care medical specialist) I am here because when speaking to her this morning, she said: ‘Minister, get some rest, nah? You’re coughing still, you’re still not up to scratch.’”

He told the audience that although he had other events to attend that day, he did not want to miss this one.

Later on, while he presented an award to Rev Christine Frederick – a representative of the Mt Moriah NESB Church, he coughed again and the host joked, “Don’t worry, Minister. She will pray for you just now.”

Megan Thee Stallion’s Ex-Best Friend To Testify As Tory Lanez Trial Postponed

Black Immigrant Daily News

The content originally appeared on: Urban Islandz

Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez were back in court on Wednesday along with her ex-best friend Kelsey Harris, also known as Kelsey Nicole.

The September trial for the felony assault charges against Tory Lanez has been put off until later in 2022. On Wednesday, lawyers for the parties attended court, including Kelsey Nicole, Megan Thee Stallion’s ex-bestie, who is called as a prosecution witness in the case. However, the matter was put off due to Lanez’s attorney being unable to attend the trial, and the sitting judge was also occupied with another matter.

At the pre-trial hearing in late July, Lanez’s lawyer, Shawn Holley, had requested that the trial date be postponed due to her appearance in another unrelated matter.

However, the judge did not make an order as to the request except to say that the parties would reconvene to see if anything had changed.

According to Rolling Stone senior reporter Nancy Dillon on Wednesday (September 14), the judge who is presiding over the matter is involved in a different trial.

The matter was not eventually heard as the trial date was proposed to reset to between November 28 and December 8. Dillon noted that there were objections from prosecutors because Lanez’s lawyer is separately involved in an arbitration matter that would affect her being able to be in court for Lanez’s hearing any sooner.

In the meantime, jury selection is expected to start on December 5. One of the prosecution witnesses, Kelsey Harris, was seen attending court although Lanez and Megan Thee Stallion were not seen in court on Wednesday.

According to the reporter, Kelsey Harris, who was seen being escorted out of the Los Angeles courthouse, was ordered to return to court on December 9, where she will appear as a witness for the prosecution.

Harris is said to be the only eyewitness in the alleged shooting that occurred in 2020. Thee Stallion alleges that Lanez shot her after a fight in the SUV the three were traveling in.

Tory Lanez is on trial for one count of felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and has continuously maintained that he was innocent of the charges.

Megan Thee Stallion, on the other hand, has accused Harris of accepting hush money from Lanez to keep quiet about how she was shot. She also alleged in recent statements that he begged her not to speak to the police and offered her $1 million to keep her silence.

Duke: I will not leave the PDP

BACK THEN: PDP leader Watson Duke, left, and THA Chief Secretary Farley Augustine before their recent falling out. FILE PHOTO –

PROGRESSIVE Democratic Patriots (PDP) political leader Watson Duke says he will not leave the party he founded in 2016.

In a video of him being interviewed, posted on his Facebook page on Wednesday, Duke said that between 2013 and 2016, the PDP had no voice in the Tobago House of Assembly (THA).

“So, I am saying, ‘why should I want to leave the PDP now?’ when between 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, there was no voice in the Assembly. I know who I am inno.

“I know what I have done for this country. I have given Tobago a voice when there was no voice.”

He was responding to calls in some quarters for him to step away from the party in the wake of his public feud with Chief Secretary Farley Augustine over the assembly’s treatment of 27 members of the Roxborough Folk Performers who had gone to New York to perform at Labour day celebrations.

Duke, the assemblyman for Roxborough/Argyle, claimed that outside of airline tickets for the members of the group, the THA did not provide additional funding for them to cover their other expenses.

As a result, he said the members of the group were left stranded, stressed out and hungry.

Augustine has denied Duke’s version of the events, saying the THA provided $400,417.50 in funding to cover airline tickets and other expenses.

But he said the assembly could not give the group additional money, adding that Duke was aware of the its constraints. The issue has led to a feud between the two.

Augustine invited Duke to attend a virtual meeting of the Executive Council on Wednesday to discuss the issues in the public domain and his future role as Deputy Chief Secretary.

But Newsday learnt that the did not take place as Augustine was in Trinidad for a meeting with Finance Minister Colm Imbert, concerning the September 26 national budget.

Augustine also posted statement and some photos from the meeting on his Facebook page.

The meeting, described as “productive and cordial,” was attended by senior officials from both the Ministry of Finance and THA

The THA, in its budget presentation in June, had requested an allocation of $3.97 billion from central government to manage the island’s affairs for fiscal 2022-2023.

In his video on Wednesday, Duke said had it not been for him, Augustine and (Faith) BYisrael would not have been in politics.

“Farley and Faith, all of them would not have found a place in politics because they had no interest in it. They told me straight up. At least Faith told me she had no interest because she was a technocrat.

“But I pursued them individually even though I was charged. I was charged then and they came on the team knowing I was a charged person, because they saw an opportunity to rescue Tobago. This is why I salute Farley and Faith.”

Duke said Augustine and BYisrael are the future of the party. “I have no problems with that.”

But he claimed that nobody has told him thanks for spending his “hard-earned money” to position the party for victory in the December 6, THA election.

“Was my money running things.” The PDP romped to a landslide 14-1 victory over the PNM in that election. The PNM had previously led the assembly for 21consecutive years.

Tsoiafatt Angus: New York trip at centre of PDP spat remains ‘a mystery’

Dr Denise Tsoiafatt-Angus –

INNOVATIVE Democratic Alliance (IDA) political leader Dr Denise Tsoiafatt Angus has described as, “a mystery,” the details surrounding the Roxborough Folk Performers’ recent visit to New York.

Last Wednesday, Progressive Democratic Alliance (PDP) political leader Watson Duke, in a post on his Facebook page, chastised the THA for abandoning 27 members of the group who had gone to New York to perform at Labour Day celebrations.

The group returned to Tobago on Monday.

Duke said outside of airline tickets, the THA did not provide additional funding to the group to cover other expenses. As a result, he claimed members were stranded, stressed out and hungry.

Augustine said the THA did not send the group to New York but provided financial assistance to the tune of $400,417.50 to cover airfare and some of their expenses.

Saying the assembly could not provide further assistance, Augustine said Duke was aware of its constraints.

The issue led to a power struggle between the two men, which persists to this day.

Last Thursday, Duke fired Augustine, Dr Faith BYisrael (Secretary of Health, Wellness and Social Protection) and Alicia Roberts-Patterson as PDP deputy leaders.

He has also criticised the THA for not fulfilling one of its campaign promises of creating employment.

Speaking on the Tobago Updates morning show, Tsoifatt Angus said getting proper details of what transpired has been challenging.

“I think what we have a challenge with, is that we do not have details of what happened because the group, I read, is saying they have not received any money at all. So, if they have not received any money at all then the assembly can’t put forward more money if they (group) have not received any money at all,” she said.

“So whether it is that the chief secretary’s promise is based on knowing that the money did not yet reach them and, therefore, those monies that were already approved as part of the sponsorship would cover that amount, really, I hesitate to comment because we do not have the details.”

She added, “It is a mystery, I would like to say at this point. All of the details are missing, whether they were hungry, not hungry, staying, not staying, receive money, not receive money, there is just a whole lot that we don’t know about this and I look forward to hearing the full story and be able to figure out what exactly happened. You are getting all types of voice mails and you really don’t know what is taking place.”

Tsoiafatt Angus, who served as secretary of culture in the former Orville London-led PNM administration – before striking out on her own by forming the IDA – said the assembly has policies in place to treat with requests for funding.

“Even though the group was not representing the THA, the administration would have had policies in place in terms of sponsorship. And in giving sponsorship, you would want to ensure that whatever the endeavour persons are asking you about, can lead to some measure of success.”

She said if a request was made for plane tickets, the assembly had the right to ask them how they were going to support the rest of the venture in relation to hotel bills, food and other expenses.

“Many of the organisations that came to us back then would have done their fundraisers and would have been able to show that they had resources and that they just needed a little extra to be able to get them to complete their budget in order to be successful.”

Tsoiafatt Angus said the assembly, under the London administration, had a grant committee that was not based on the “will of the secretary.”

“You had people in the committee, who would evaluate the forms that would come in and then they would call the organisation for additional information to ensure the venture, for which THA funding was requested, would be a success.”

She also described as “unfortunate,” the public feud between Duke and Augustine, saying it has become a distraction when the focus should be on Tobago’s governance.

Calypso Rose: I will be home for Tobago carnival

Calypso Rose –

UNDIPSUTED Calypso Queen of the World, Mc Cartha Linda Lewis-Sandy, lovingly known as Calyspo Rose, wants TT and the world to know that she is alive and well.

Rose spoke to the Newsday from New York on Wednesday to dispel concerns about the state of her health after calypsonian Edwin “Crazy” Ayong posted on social media a picture and video of her lying on a bed, indicating poor health.

“What Crazy did was horrible. I am getting calls from all over the world, Texas, England, France, from people wanting to know what was happening with me.

“I am alive and in good health. The only thing that is wrong with me is that I got a new knee. The old one gone and I have to do therapy for the new one because of my weight.”

She said she would demonstrate her fitness when she comes home for Tobago carnival in October and to participate in the One Hand Don’t Clap event at St James on September 24.

“I am coming for Tobago Carnival. I am not coming to perform. I am coming to celebrate the first Tobago October carnival and to eat my crab and dumpling.

“This would show TT I am in good health. I am not ill.”

Rose explained Crazy, known as the loveable lunatic, made a surprise visit to her home in New York.

She said Crazy calls her Mama out of respect because she was like a mother to the calypsonians in the Young Brigade tent.

“He came to visit me and said, “Mama I want to take a picture.”

“I told him, “you could take a picture but don’t let the whole world see me. Next thing I know I getting calls from all over.

“I wish he could take down that post,” Rose said.

Newsday called Crazy’s cell phone several times, but the calls were forwarded each time.

There is a photo of Crazy kissing Rose’s cheeks on his FB page. In the video he posted, the person behind the camera identified as “music man Derek,” engaged them in a conversation about their long friendship which spans some five decades.

Crazy reminisced about Rose being the only woman to beat him in a monarch competition in 1978 when she won the crown with Thank You and he placed second with Dustbin Cover.

Prior to that, Rose became the first female to win the Road March title with Going Down San Fernando.

Derek also reminded them that they both appeared in the 1979 movie Bacchanal Time and commended them as elders who are still together after all this time. He also encouraged young people to learn the craft from their elders.

She noted that one of the calypso greats Mighty Sparrow (Slinger Francisco) may not be among the elders one can turn to, “because he baptised.”

Speaking about his baptism with the Newsday, Rose said Sparrow always wanted to be saved.

“Long time he wanted to be baptised. His mother was a Spiritual Baptist mother you know.”

Rose said she had an uncle who was a priest and took Sparrow to him in his quest to fulfill his higher calling.

“But my uncle died while he was seeking salvation.

“Now he is a true child of the Lord,” she said wishing him power and strength.

To TT she expressed congratulations on the 60th anniversary of Independence and wished power, light and blessings on the nation.

Un nouveau saut vers l’inconnu

Black Immigrant Daily News
