El comisionado auxiliar en investigaciones criminales de la Policía de Puerto Rico, teniente coronel Roberto Rivera Miranda, confirmó que las autoridades detuvieron a tres personas en relación con un asesinato ocurrido cerca de las 2:30 p.m. del domingo en los predios del estacionamiento del centro comercial Plaza Palma Real, en Humacao.

En el incidente fue asesinado Carlos Manuel Cepeda Durán, de 39 años, según identificaron las autoridades. No obstante, el agente indicó que la familia aún no ha realizado el proceso de identificación. Además, resultó herida de bala, en su mano derecha, una mujer de 28 años que acompañaba al hombre.

“Bajó un sinnúmero de informaciones ayer mismo que se trabajaron, y la misma resultó en tres personas que fueron detenidas en una residencia que aparenta haber sido alquilada por este occiso y, claro, se les ocuparon unas armas”, indicó el agente al explicar que los dispositivos estaban listos para disparar en automático.

Rivera Miranda añadió que también se ocuparon peines para las armas y 17 kilos de cocaína, y afirmó que el móvil del caso pudiera ser el narcotráfico.

El agente concluyó que hoy continuarán investigando con el material de pietaje de las cámaras del lugar, aparte del testimonio que la fémina herida ofrezca para dar con la identidad de los victimarios.

La cifra de asesinatos alcanza los 404, 18 menos que en esta fecha el año pasado, según Rivera Miranda.

La comisionada residente, Jenniffer González Colón, anunció hoy, lunes, 90 millones de dólares destinados a arreglos de la carretera PR-2 en Mayagüez.

“Como miembro del Comité de Transportación e Infraestructura, me complace que los fondos que trabajamos en el Congreso se soliciten y más aún que estén llegando a mi isla para reforzar y modernizar la infraestructura, sobre todo la vial que requiere mantenimiento constante”, expresó González Colón en declaraciones escritas.

Explicó que el proyecto mejorará un segmento de 1.4 millas a lo largo de la PR-2 en Mayagüez, incluyendo lo siguiente: la eliminación de semáforos en seis intersecciones, la eliminación del acceso directo y la construcción de calles laterales para tránsito local, peatones y ciclistas. El proyecto también construirá dos puentes de paso elevado y eliminará los semáforos en la intersección de la calle San Juan y la intersección PR-3108.

Mencionó que los fondos provienen del programa INFRA (Proyectos multimodales de carga y carreteras significativos a nivel nacional) del Departamento de Transportación de los Estados Unidos y son financiados por el presupuesto anual de la agencia bajo el año fiscal 2022.

INFRA otorga subvenciones competitivas para proyectos multimodales de carga y carreteras de importancia nacional o regional para mejorar la seguridad, la eficiencia y la confiabilidad del movimiento de carga y personas en zonas rurales y urbanas.

Los fondos que otorga el programa están destinados a proyectos que mejoran la seguridad, generan beneficios económicos, reducen la congestión vehicular y mejoran la resiliencia en busca de mejorar los movimientos críticos de carga.

Two tropical waves located in the Atlantic Ocean have grabbed the attention of the US National Hurricane Centre (NHC).

The wave that is expected to reach the Caribbean first is located in the Central Atlantic Ocean between Africa and the Windward Islands.

NHC said the wave is producing a large area of disorganised showers and thunderstorms.

“Some slow development of this system is possible over the next several days while it moves generally westward to west-north-westward over the central tropical Atlantic and approaches the Windward Islands by the end of the week,” NHC said.

Forecasters have given the wave a 20 per cent chance to develop into a tropical cyclone over the next five days.

The second tropical wave, which is located just off the west coast of Africa, is also an area of disorganised showers and thunderstorms.

“Environmental conditions appear only marginally favourable, and any development of this wave should be slow to occur while it moves westward or west-north-westward across the eastern tropical Atlantic through the end of the week,” NHC stated.

The wave has also been given a 20 per cent chance to develop into a tropical cyclone this week.

The Royal Ocean Racing Club announces the inaugural RORC Caribbean 600 Series which will be based in Antigua from 14th to 24th February 2023.

The series will include three days of racing followed by the main event; the 14th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600. The RORC Caribbean 600 Series is open to boats racing under the IRC, CSA and MOCRA Class Rules, plus other suitable classes.

RORC Vice Commodore Eric de Turckheim’s Teasing Machine and RORC Commodore James Neville’s INO XXX are both set to compete in the RORC Caribbean 600 Series.

In two versions of Teasing Machine, Eric de Turckheim has competed in four previous editions of the RORC Caribbean 600.

“Historically, major 600-mile offshore races are part of a series, for example the Fastnet and the Admiral’s Cup. The RORC Caribbean 600 Series will have a similar format with inshore racing, a medium length offshore and a long offshore race,” commented Turckheim. “The RORC Caribbean 600 race is one of the best offshore races in the world, but it is normally won by a big boat. The Series will give smaller boats a better chance of winning due to the variety of races. The Royal Ocean Racing Club have a long-term plan for the RORC Caribbean 600 Series; making it one of the world’s most significant regattas.”
